00:00Freedom of Expression
00:02Another basic human right is the freedom to express yourself.
00:07You should not be punished or inconvenienced by others or governments for your actions of expression.
00:14You should speak your mind and communicate free of charge.
00:19This right is the basis for the use of communication methods and technologies.
00:23Free of charge.
00:25Charge is a type of barrier or limitation that should not be imposed on any person by constitutional right.
00:33This right extends to actions of expression.
00:36Further, what you do to express your identity and personal preferences are types of communication.
00:43For example, if you choose not to have electrical services or water services,
00:48are expressions of your lifestyle preferences and your personality.
00:52Again, you cannot be made to make choices.
00:57That would be forcing you against your will, thus despotic.
01:02So before plans for disconnection from the grid,
01:05you must ensure that the system you live under allows for freedom of expression.
01:11Not every area of the world has these freedoms.
01:14But if you live in a society that considers itself free,
01:18then this right should be a guarantee,
01:21and you can invoke it when disconnecting from the grid.
01:24For example, you may invoke this right when you want to install and use communication equipment
01:29in your place of living,
01:31such as when installing television antennas and radio equipment.
01:36Freedom to Pursue Happiness
01:38You have the freedom to pursue happiness in the free areas of the world,
01:43and this can translate as having the freedom to live as you wish,
01:47as long as you do it in a peaceful and reasonable manner.
01:51No entity may impose on you a certain lifestyle
01:54just because of your geographical location or any other protected trait.
01:59So, if you are happier by living off the grid,
02:02so be it, that's what you should be allowed to do.
02:05As discussed thoroughly here,
02:08living off the grid is not in any way harmful to the participant or her society.
02:13And happiness cannot be achieved under economic or social coercion.
02:19Furthermore, as mentioned,
02:21you should not be made to pay for anything
02:23because doing so would clearly violate human and constitutional rights.
02:28By extension, having money is not,
02:31and it should not be a requirement in any society.
02:36And even if everyone had sufficient money in a society,
02:39to discriminate on the basis of who has more money
02:42would be a fundamental violation
02:44of all sorts of moral, religious, and social rights.
02:48Happiness depends on many things,
02:50but we can all agree that it truly depends on just a few basics.
02:55Life, health, and reasonable freedom.
02:57Without any of these three, happiness is not possible.
03:01So, to limit or curtail any of these
03:04is a violation of freedom
03:06and each person's right to the pursuit of happiness.
03:09If you genuinely believe that living off the grid brings you a better life,
03:14then live that way.
03:16If you are certain that living off the grid brings you better health,
03:20then by all means.
03:22If you believe choosing the off-grid lifestyle gives you freedom,
03:26then this lifestyle should be allowed to you.
03:29Again, where you live,
03:31the government should allow your freedom to pursue happiness.
03:35This is to say,
03:36to pursue a better life,
03:37better health,
03:38and personal freedoms.
03:40If these are not afforded to you,
03:42then there must be a change
03:44either with your government
03:45or in your living situation.
03:47If your government or community is not free,
03:50you may petition
03:51and demand your freedom as a community.
03:54But change may come only grindingly slow in this way.
03:59Or,
03:59you may vote with your feet
04:01and leave the unfree area.
04:03I understand this is often difficult,
04:05but there may be other locations
04:07with the freedoms that you should have
04:09within your reach.
04:10I am a hardened believer
04:13that if the world allowed
04:15reasonably free movement among borders,
04:18the world would be a better place,
04:20if only because the undesired areas
04:22would quickly become population deserts
04:25and soon change for the better or collapse.
04:29This is a sensitive topic,
04:30especially here in the U.S.
04:32And as I write this,
04:35anti-immigrant sentiment is very high,
04:37partly due to the current political rhetoric.
04:41But open borders have helped
04:42many areas of the world hugely.
04:46It generally brings wealth,
04:48peace,
04:48and cooperation among nations.
04:51For example,
04:52the European Union,
04:53the United Kingdom,
04:55and the United States
04:56all greatly benefit
04:58from an open borders policy
05:00within their unions.
05:02Financial freedom.
05:05Basic math and some honesty
05:07will quickly make it clear
05:08that the grid is ripping you off.
05:11Naturally,
05:12getting off this grid will,
05:14in short order,
05:15begin to give you financial freedom.
05:17Financial freedom is a two-prong achievement.
05:20One, freedom from debt.
05:23And two,
05:23freedom to participate in the economy.
05:27Most of us may be familiar
05:28with the benefits of being debt-free.
05:31Less anxiety and stress.
05:33More money in your piggy bank.
05:34Less waste of your hard-earned funds.
05:37Freedom to use your money
05:38in more ways.
05:39Etc.
05:40Efficiency should not end
05:42with saving and smartly using water,
05:45energy,
05:45or resources.
05:47Efficiency extends to your finances.
05:50A large part of efficiency
05:51is doing more with less.
05:54So,
05:54trimming the fat
05:55is among the first things
05:57you can do to save money.
05:59First and foremost,
06:00cut back on luxuries
06:02and lavishness.
06:03Second,
06:04if you are in debt,
06:05with the savings you gain
06:07through efficiency,
06:08you may pay off that debt.
06:10You may,
06:11through efficiency,
06:12earn more
06:13and pay off your debt.
06:14Third,
06:15you may spend less
06:16and earn more,
06:17which helps you pay off your debt.
06:19Fourth,
06:20you may restructure your debt
06:22to more convenient terms,
06:24such as putting some
06:25or all of your debt
06:26in a lower interest rate loan.
06:28I know
06:29these are simplistic overviews
06:31of some strategies
06:31for being debt-free
06:32and it may take
06:34a long period to achieve,
06:36but it is a huge benefit
06:38thinking efficiently
06:39and taking efficient actions
06:41to eliminate debt.
06:43I was severely in debt
06:45many years ago
06:46and after some soul-searching
06:48and learning,
06:49I took bold action
06:50to eliminate it
06:51almost completely.
06:53Living off the grid
06:54partly means
06:55not getting ripped off.
06:57So,
06:57why would you allow it
06:58in your financial life?
07:00Once debt-free,
07:02it is best to stay away
07:03from credit cards,
07:04loans,
07:05leases,
07:05and mortgages
07:06if at all possible.
07:08I understand
07:09that in many cases
07:10some of these
07:11are set up
07:12as virtual inevitabilities,
07:14such as the case
07:15for housing
07:16in most towns
07:16and cities,
07:17where a mortgage
07:18is almost unescapable.
07:21I believe you should
07:22always explore
07:23alternatives to loans
07:25and debt
07:26and you should
07:27have it as a goal
07:28to be debt-free
07:29as soon as you
07:30can achieve it,
07:31even for your shelter.
07:33It is possible
07:34not to have a rent
07:35or mortgage debt.
07:37Many people are,
07:38right now,
07:39not paying any bank
07:40for their home
07:41or apartment.
07:42I believe that
07:43home loans
07:44and mortgage debt
07:44are among the largest
07:45scams in history
07:46and among the most
07:48harmful types of debt
07:49for people,
07:50especially in the U.S.
07:52I strongly believe this
07:54because most mortgages
07:55charge you
07:56annual percentage
07:57rate interests
07:57that renew every year
07:59based on the balance
08:00of the loan.
08:01This could add up
08:02to several thousands
08:03of dollars per year
08:04paid extra
08:05for an average home
08:07in the U.S.
08:08And mortgages
08:09also include
08:10other fees
08:11that often add up
08:12from several hundred
08:13to over several thousand
08:14dollars per year.
08:16For example,
08:17required homeowners insurance,
08:19flood insurance,
08:20loan insurance,
08:21and more
08:21home affordability
08:23has all but decreased
08:24in the U.S.
08:25in many areas
08:26and in recent years.
08:28In some cases,
08:30a mortgage may balloon
08:31to close to more than
08:32double the original
08:33cost of a home.
08:35For example,
08:36a $150,000 mortgage
08:38may end up costing you
08:40close to $300,000
08:42by the end of the life
08:43of the mortgage.
08:45I, for example,
08:46in 2006,
08:47mortgaged a home
08:48with a private lender
08:49after being discouraged
08:50by my realtor
08:51from pursuing
08:52a government-backed mortgage.
08:54So,
08:55I purchased the small home
08:56in East Central Florida
08:58for about $150,000
09:00at close to 7.5% APR.
09:04Due to this abusively
09:05high APR,
09:07my monthly payments
09:08were stupendously high,
09:10about $1,400 per month.
09:13This high payment
09:14was a blow
09:15for my modest income level
09:17of the time.
09:18This travesty happened
09:19at the height
09:20of the housing market
09:22inflation bubble
09:22of 2006.
09:25And after I reviewed
09:26how much I would pay
09:27for the home in total,
09:29it was over $300,000.
09:32This made me lose sleep
09:33and was enough
09:34to make me want to
09:35quickly get out
09:36of this situation.
09:38Plus,
09:38the job market
09:39was very poor
09:40at that time and area,
09:42especially for immigrants
09:43like me.
09:44Just as a side note,
09:45as I write this,
09:47CBS News reports
09:48that mortgages
09:49are at a 20-year
09:50high average
09:51of 7.6%.
09:53Mortgages
09:54are the few things
09:55that make me wonder,
09:57why has there not been
09:58a full-bore economic rebellion
10:00against them yet?
10:02Avoiding,
10:03minimizing,
10:04and getting rid of mortgages
10:05and any debt
10:06are central goals
10:08of the living
10:08off-the-grid lifestyle.
10:11In fact,
10:11this is so important
10:13that attempting to live
10:14free of rent and mortgage
10:16should be the off-gridder's goal
10:17starting on day one.
10:19Among the benefits
10:20of thinking efficiently
10:21should be to extend
10:23that efficiency
10:24to the structure
10:25you call home.
10:27If your home
10:27is too large
10:28and wasting of space,
10:30resources,
10:30and features,
10:31then it is time
10:32to downgrade.
10:33You may not need
10:34many of the physical features
10:36of your home,
10:37and others may actually
10:38use them
10:39or even need them
10:40in theirs.
10:41So,
10:41you may trim the fat
10:42by selling your home
10:44and downsizing
10:45to a place
10:45that you can fully utilize.
10:48With the earnings
10:48of your home sale,
10:49you may be able
10:50to purchase
10:51a smaller
10:52and more efficient home
10:53and remain in less debt
10:55or even be debt-free.
10:57Make no mistake,
10:58being off the grid
10:59does not mean
11:00being financially broke.
11:02Through your off-grid efforts,
11:04you'll surely gain freedom
11:06to participate
11:06in the economy
11:07more fully,
11:09and I am convinced
11:10that with your increased
11:12knowledge and skills,
11:13your earning potential
11:14will improve.
11:16With better savings
11:17and money management,
11:19your wealth may increase.
11:21And,
11:21with more time available,
11:23you may engage
11:24in smarter
11:25and more productive
11:26financial activities.
11:28You may choose
11:28to engage
11:29in the trade of goods,
11:30services,
11:31and property.
11:32You may launch
11:32a business
11:33or engage
11:34in beneficial
11:35financial investments.
11:36or you may want
11:38to step away
11:39from anything financial
11:40and find it
11:41less stressful
11:42and more satisfying
11:43to not use money.
11:45Of course,
11:46this may be dependent
11:47on the mentality
11:48of your loved ones
11:49and community.
11:51Here in the U.S.,
11:53owned property taxes
11:54are perpetual
11:55in incorporated areas
11:57or areas
11:57with a jurisdictional
11:58government.
12:00Be aware
12:00that many types
12:02of taxes
12:02may be mandatory
12:03during your working
12:04adulthood,
12:05such as income taxes.
12:08Sales taxes
12:09are always mandatory
12:10in the U.S.
12:11for all purchases.
12:13So,
12:14even if you own
12:15all of your property,
12:17you may still have
12:18to pay to own it.
12:19But,
12:20you will surely
12:21have more choice
12:22in how much
12:22you participate
12:23or not
12:24in the economy
12:25because of your
12:26increased earning potential,
12:28but,
12:28more importantly,
12:29because of your
12:30increased self-sufficiency.
12:33Time freedom.
12:34Time is among
12:35the most precious
12:37resources
12:38we have as people.
12:40Our society
12:41has taught you
12:42to sell it
12:42in combination
12:43with your labor,
12:45loyalty,
12:45and obedience.
12:47These are also
12:48called jobs.
12:50The average American,
12:51aged 25 to 54,
12:54spends over 40 hours
12:55on average per week
12:56at work.
12:58Other nations'
12:58weekly work hourly averages
13:00may range much higher,
13:01such as Mauritania,
13:0350,
13:04Kenya,
13:0448,
13:06China,
13:0647,
13:07and Mexico,
13:0844.
13:10Other averages
13:10are lower,
13:12such as in some
13:13European nations.
13:15And,
13:15most people
13:16are employed
13:16in jobs
13:17that are ideal,
13:19they dislike,
13:19or hate.
13:20This is so prevalent
13:22that ideal jobs
13:23are often referred to
13:24as dream jobs.
13:26And,
13:26as we know,
13:27a tiny minority
13:28is currently employed
13:30in their dream job
13:31or anything close to it.
13:33In fact,
13:34only 10% of Americans
13:36report to be working
13:37in their desired position.
13:39So,
13:40it is reasonable
13:41to assume
13:42that most of us
13:43would rather be doing
13:44something more desirable
13:45with our time.
13:47Many of us
13:48only wish to be doing
13:49something engaging,
13:51satisfying,
13:52and to work
13:53in a place
13:53where you are
13:54more valued
13:55and respected.
13:57Capitalist employers,
13:58and corporations,
13:59which are most
14:00of the world's businesses,
14:01are highly incentivized
14:03to be dictatorial
14:04and rigid.
14:06They are authoritarian
14:07to the core
14:08and often demand
14:10unreasonable commitments
14:11from you,
14:12expecting and demanding
14:13more and more
14:14of your time
14:15and resources,
14:16all for the benefit
14:17of the company.
14:19If you've been employed
14:20for some time,
14:21you'd surely experience
14:23disappointment
14:24after disappointment
14:25in your working career.
14:27Missing out on time
14:28with your family
14:29or loved ones
14:30or missing out
14:31on a birthday,
14:33trip,
14:33birth,
14:34wedding,
14:35or other family gathering.
14:37Often people have
14:38to work on weekends
14:39when many others
14:40have some time off.
14:42I certainly have
14:43my share
14:43of these disappointing misses
14:44due to demanding
14:46work requirements.
14:48Others feel
14:48they have to work
14:49odd hours
14:50and night shifts,
14:51further putting pressure
14:52on one's social life
14:53and health.
14:54Living off the grid
14:56empowers you
14:58in many fronts
14:59to allow you
15:00to claim your time
15:01back from the control
15:02of your employer.
15:03You will be more aware
15:04of the pitfalls
15:05of capitalist society
15:07and attempt your best
15:08to avoid them.
15:10Your increased skills,
15:12knowledge,
15:12and resourcefulness
15:13will surely make you
15:15a more valuable employee.
15:17This means that you may
15:18gain the attractiveness
15:19for other
15:20and better paid positions
15:21within your company
15:22or organization
15:23or in others.
15:25You may also gain
15:26the power to detach
15:27from employment altogether
15:29and start your own business,
15:31retirement activities,
15:32or self-employment.
15:34Many people have found
15:35the determination
15:36to detach
15:36and have gone on
15:38to start
15:39what would be
15:39successful corporations.
15:41Some may grow
15:43to be large employers
15:44in a community.
15:46Again,
15:47living off the grid
15:48lowers your need
15:49for money
15:49by empowering you
15:50with skills
15:51and knowledge
15:52to be self-sufficient
15:53in many ways.
15:54This less need
15:55for money
15:56will surely detach
15:57the value
15:58that employment
15:59has in your life
15:59and you may choose
16:00not to work
16:01as many hours
16:02or not work
16:03for any employer.
16:04That is a possibility
16:06and something
16:07many have engaged in.
16:09Don't get it twisted.
16:11You are not lazy
16:12or unproductive
16:13if you decide
16:14not to work
16:14for an employer.
16:16In fact,
16:16this may unlock
16:17a lot of time
16:18that you can then use
16:19for things you value
16:20and enjoy.
16:22The range of things
16:23you may use your time
16:24on are too great
16:25to list here,
16:26but engaging
16:27in your dream occupation
16:28may be one of them.
16:30You may unlock
16:31enough time
