01:17darren calabrese the globe and mail deep in the middle of nova scotia far from its quaint coastal
01:24towns sits lansdowne a hamlet of around 100 people in a cellular dead zone it's surrounded by endless
01:31spruce forests bushes like razor wire and bogs that breed swarms of black flies like many faded
01:37settlements across the maritimes lansdowne reached its peak more than a century ago about 150 kilometers
01:45northeast of halifax it was once a busy railway stop bustling with scottish immigrants who dug iron
01:51and copper mines deep into the hillsides today those mine shafts are abandoned one lone train a
01:57day cuts through the community with a melancholic blare most of the people here live a quiet rural
02:02existence in secluded homes scattered along back country roads that only the locals know where chickens
02:08and large dogs roam free and the rusted skeletons of old vehicles sit marooned in the dirt much like
02:14american appalachia this once prosperous corner of picto county is now economically stagnant one
02:21in five children live in poverty higher than most other counties in the province it's here where the
02:27lives of lily and jack sullivan were implanted two years ago to a rundown trailer set back from highway
02:33289 with their pregnant mother and stepfather they needed a place to live and their step-grandmother
02:39who owned the home welcomed them to live with her lily and jack sullivan lived at this house in
02:46lansdowne nova scotia in may daniel martel right waited there with brother justin for news of the
02:53search for the children chris donovan the globe and mail life for lily six and jack four inside the
03:00cluttered trailer in lansdowne was chaotic there were holes in the floor of the front stoop tarps
03:06protect the underside of the trailer from the elements and so much racket from the lively children
03:11that their step-grandmother soon retreated to a camper in the driveway their stepfather daniel martel
03:1834 with pale eyes and ropey arms worked at the local hardwood mill their mother malihia brooks murray
03:2427 a member of sipek and katak first nation with chin-length dark hair stayed home with their baby
03:30meadow inside the mobile home a large wood stove filled up most of the living room the kids artwork
03:37was pasted to the kitchen wall next to the sliding patio door that led to a yard where they spent hours
03:43playing next to the chicken coop lily chattered away to her dolls and stuffed animals jack turned over
03:49rocks and pieces of wood in search of bugs and worms outside the fenced backyard and up over a steep
03:55embankment the children sometimes played in a small fort nestled beneath boughs of spruce it was like their
04:02own little dream world lily and jack's family say they played regularly in this patch of woods near their
04:09home where children's toys were still strewn about in the early days of the search steve wadden the globe and
04:16mail inside the trailer in lansdowne jack and lily's art was tacked up in the kitchen steve wadden
04:25the globe and mail most days jack and lily hopped on the bus to attend salt springs elementary
04:31a rural school about a 20-minute ride from their home jack smaller than his peers was strapped in at
04:37the front of the bus next to his sister the morning the children were reported missing the big yellow
04:43school bus rolled past the mobile home without stopping for a second day in a row jack and lily
04:49were usually standing by the side of the road waiting to be picked up but earlier that morning
04:54of may 2nd their mother had marked them absent from school at about 6 15 a.m both parents have said it
05:00was because lily had a cough they say they heard the children playing in the next room while they dozed
05:05in the bedroom with their toddler daniel has said he saw lily pop in and out a few times
05:11at about 9 40 a.m the couple says they awoke and realized the kids were gone they were outside
05:16playing but we weren't aware of it at the time and the next thing we knew it was quiet she told ctv
05:22atlantic we get up and i tell my partner daniel do you hear the kids and he says no instantly we are
05:30looking outside we are looking everywhere yelling for them jack and lily's mysterious disappearance
05:36has baffled the country more than three months after they were reported missing after one of
05:41the largest searches in nova scotia's history and an intensive police investigation police still
05:47haven't confirmed the circumstances of how the young siblings went missing it's possible that there
05:52were clues even potential warning signs in their home life a closer look into the lives of jack and lily
05:58shows that all was not well in the trailer in lansdowne belinda gray at her kitchen table in middle
06:05muskotoboit has spent long hours in the woods looking for clues to lily and jack's whereabouts
06:12her son cody sullivan separated three years ago from the children's mother malihia brooks murray
06:18darren calabrese the globe and mail malihia is a member of sipek and katak first nation where her
06:27father henry brooks is among many waiting for news he remembers the last time he spoke with the
06:32children jack said he loved him ingrid bolmer the globe and mail daniel martel is on stress leave from
06:42his job at a hardwood mill he says people in the community sometimes give him dirty looks
06:47suspecting him of having something to do with the disappearance chris donovan the globe and mail
06:53that morning jack's blue dinosaur boots were gone so were lily's pink rubber boots and her white
06:59backpack with strawberries the only clue left behind according to the parents was one child-sized boot
07:06print in the dirt driveway a few meters from the home malihia called 911 at about 10 a.m daniel said he
07:14jumped in her white suv and left to check nearby dirt roads culverts and streams soon an army of search
07:20and rescue volunteers arrived wearing orange hunting vests they fanned out conducting a grid search in the
07:27swamp and thick woods around the home drones and a helicopter scoured overhead a police dog on a leash
07:34with a handler set about the yard police combed every inch of the property they rummaged through
07:40the mobile home reached inside a hamster cage tore apart a brush pile unzipped the suitcase lying in the
07:47middle of the yard they opened the top of the dryer at the end of the driveway and peered in the chicken
07:52hut they searched the camper van where daniel's mother jamie mackenzie lives three times malihia messaged
07:59the children's paternal grandmother belinda gray i never thought they would run off on me like that
08:05she wrote i'm so distraught hours later and still no sign of the children malihia floated the idea that
08:13jack and lily were abducted many are suspecting they were picked up by somebody she texted belinda
08:20because there is no trace of them or lily's backpack daniel meanwhile was tearing through the woods on foot
08:25and waiting in streams telling people he was moving faster than the police helicopters that day carloads
08:32of family members pulled up to help search in the mid-afternoon a non-encrypted radio channel crackled
08:38with voices of emergency responders families brought us to a location there not far away that there's a
08:45piece of a blanket which the mother says she believes belongs to her daughter radioed an official
08:50daniel says a child's boot print was found on the spot marked by this blue pipe a few meters from the
08:57camper where his mother lives lindsey jones the globe and mail emergency responders dispatched a
09:04canine unit to the site where they seized lily's pink blanket torn and wound around the lower branches
09:10of a spruce it was about a kilometer from the mobile home off the gravel lansdowne road where daniel's
09:16father and uncles live the road runs deep into the backcountry connecting with dirt roads that snake
09:23further into the wilderness to remote lakes backwoods dumps and clear-cut tracks of land when a police
09:29officer asked daniel about the pink blanket he said it wasn't lilies at first police began pounding on
09:35doors into the early hours of the next morning they came to the door of daniel's father earl martel
09:41a retired tire plant worker who lives atop a hill in a bungalow he built himself 40 years ago
09:47officers peered with flashlights into the corners of his living room jumbled with the craft supplies
09:53and hot wheels of daniel's two school-aged biological children who often visit on weekends earl guided
09:59police into the yard to old campers and a derelict log cabin filled with junk and to daniel's older
10:05model black sedan in need of repairs he couldn't afford police checked earl martel's property home
10:12to a cluttered cabin and old campers for jack and lily in the middle of the night on may 3rd lindsey
10:18jones the globe and mail police also banged on the door of the home of belinda in middle muskotoboit
10:25about half an hour from lansdowne they were looking to talk to her son who had been living there for the
10:31last nine months after losing his roofing job but cody sullivan hadn't seen jack and lily since he
10:37and malihia separated three years ago he'd cut ties after she filed for full custody of the children
10:43over the coming days police returned twice more to interrogate him and take photos of vehicles
10:49through the night search and rescue volunteers combed the woods and helicopters and drones that can
10:54detect body heat scanned overhead malihia was up to texting with belinda
10:59i have reason to believe they may have been taken by someone she wrote they should have found them by
11:05now if they were in the woods the next morning belinda set out to help search for her grandchildren
11:12as she drove toward the trailer on highway 289 past the trail of orange traffic cones it hit her where
11:18she was headed over the last two years malihia had distanced herself from belinda she stopped bringing
11:25the children to visit later explaining that daniel was jealous and didn't want her going there or
11:29giving out the address the grandmother said she had never been invited to the house until she showed
11:35up to help in the search belinda didn't know this was the home her grandchildren were living in
11:40a home that she'd noticed multiple times on her way while driving to halifax
11:45wow wow she says she thought as she stepped inside to speak to malihia
11:50everything she saw from the junk strewn yard to the cluttered kitchen was the total opposite of
11:56the neat and tidy woman she used to know even though she'd heard it once before she needed to
12:01hear it again what happened she asked malihia opened the low rumbling sliding patio door in the kitchen
12:08demonstrating how she assumed the children quietly left the home while she and daniel were sleeping
12:14well malihia belinda recalled saying you're the mom you know these kids better than anybody
12:20so where do you feel they'd go what would take their interest what direction would they go she had no
12:26idea lansdowne road about a kilometer from jack and lily's home is where police seized lily's pink
12:34blanket which has been sent for forensic testing the roads around the children's home wind past an array
12:40of rural properties train tracks a natural gas pipeline and a small lake steve wadden the globe and mail
12:48that day as search and rescue teams tramped through the woods rolling ankles and plucking ticks from
12:54their skin malihia stood on the side of the highway in front of a local television camera
12:59it's been raining and they're probably soaking wet but with the sun today i'm hopeful they're feeling
13:04warm she said swallowing back tears we're all filled with pain and sorrow because we just want them
13:10found we want them home everyone loves them she also took to facebook pleading for police to issue
13:17an amber alert a national public alert to help locate abducted children i want my babies home my
13:24children are not shy to strangers and will go with anyone they don't understand stranger danger
13:29she wrote on may 3rd daniel also pushed for such an alert telling the globe that abduction is a
13:35possibility something he said he tried to raise early on with police but he said they looked at
13:41him like he was crazy perhaps it's because the home is so remote where few travel or have reason to
13:47pass by also nova scotia police require specific criteria to activate an amber alert including a
13:54description of the child abductor or vehicle and reasonable grounds to believe an abduction has occurred
13:59in this case our cmp have repeatedly said they have no such evidence i asked them to go to every
14:06airport all the airports and intake for different provinces pi and new brunswick daniel said breaking
14:12down crying they will go with anybody because they're undiagnosed autistic they will go with anybody
14:19as long as you offer them food or water say i'll take you home to mom or dad and they'll immediately get
14:25with them while the search team continued their work from the space camp in lansdowne station
14:32malihia and daniel martell pressed police to issue an amber alert to look for tips from farther afield
14:38ron ward the canadian press it was late afternoon that saturday when daniel and malihia's relatives
14:45began to turn on each other in the dooryard of the trailer a discussion about meth use in the home
14:50led one of malihia's family members to hurl an accusation that daniel must have something to do
14:56with the children's disappearance the charge ignited a blaze of angry words eventually daniel's mother
15:03janie ordered some of malihia's family members off her property just up the road daniel and malihia
15:09waited at the search and rescue headquarters for an update from police it was around supper time when
15:15officers pointed out on maps where searchers had been suddenly malihia said she wasn't feeling well
15:22she walked out with meadow on her hip in the back of an ambulance malihia sobbed uncontrollably her
15:28mother registered nurse cindy murray at her side daniel pleaded with malihia to speak to her alone but
15:34her mother stepped in front of him cindy get the fuck out of here daniel recalled saying the women
15:41hustled to cindy's car strapped in meadow and sped off down the dirt road i love you daniel called out
15:48to his child through the rolled up back window it was the last time the couple was together after
15:54that malihia blocked daniel from contacting her and later changed her facebook status to single
16:01the searchers marked trees near the children's house with tape as they fanned out through the woods
16:06steve wadden the globe and mail belinda emerged from the woods just before dark it had been 36
16:13hours since the children had disappeared and she was considering sleeping in her car to begin searching
16:19again at first light but then she learned malihia had left lansdowne something that has troubled her
16:25ever since if she could leave belinda said her chin quivering in sorrow then it meant she knew her
16:31kids weren't coming back daniel was also upset that malihia left i've been the only one there for
16:38them he sobbed in an interview she can't control them only i can they act out whenever she's there
16:45she always gets me to calm them down or get them to stop fighting or feed them or get them up and put
16:50them to bed every night she was asking me to do everything it just breaks my heart not to ever see
16:56everybody the day before the children were reported missing the mounties say the children were observed
17:02in public with family members it was the last time they were seen by anyone outside the home
17:07daniel has said in an interview that the evening before the kids disappeared everyone was home he
17:14said he spent the evening working on the fence in the backyard it was a night just like any other for
17:19the young children he added though he couldn't remember what time they went to bed there is however at
17:24least one account of strange activity at the mobile home that night rcmp spokesperson corporal carly
17:30mccann confirmed that police received a tip on may 8th from someone who described hearing a vehicle
17:35come and go from the mobile home throughout the night before the children were reported missing
17:40investigators are continuing to review and assess more than 600 tips from the public and follow up on
17:46over 800 tasks she wrote in an email a neighbor who spoke to the globe said they reported this information
17:53on may 8th the neighbor said they were working on a vehicle in their own yard when they heard the
17:58same loud five-speed car come and go from the trailer about six times from midnight to 5 a.m after the
18:05children's disappearance the neighbor considered it important information and reported it to police
18:11the globe agreed not to name the neighbor because of concerns for their safety in the community
18:16dozens of people including some members of jack and lily's family attended a candlelight vigil for
18:23the children outside the stellerton detachment of the rcmp ingrid bolmer the globe and mail for
18:30the next five days search and rescue teams poured over the area on the sixth day of the children's
18:36disappearance police announced they were scaling back it was unlikely they said that the children were still
18:42alive in the following weeks searchers returned twice more they zeroed in around the home and the
18:49natural gas pipeline a clear-cut trail of land that runs through the countryside where a possible child
18:55sized boot print was found lily's blanket was also nearby police divers scoured lakes they drained the
19:03septic tank of the mobile home and inspected four abandoned mineshafts in lansdowne a search that's eerily
19:10familiar for locals in 2002 amateur mineral explorers discovered the remains of a man who
19:16had disappeared 19 years earlier in one of these old copper mines 39 year old alex penny's car was
19:23found abandoned on a dirt road in lansdowne months after his mysterious disappearance it's a chilling
19:30homicide that has never been solved one that rattles around in the collective memories of the people who
19:35live here police have said they plan to search more of these old mineshafts for the children
19:41a provincial database shows five within several kilometers of the mobile home
19:46dozens more pepper the backwoods and rural highways of picto county police have described the case as
19:52highly unusual most missing persons cases are resolved shortly after they're reported to police
19:59but the disappearance of jack and lily has become a complex and intensive major crime investigation
20:04involving a tremendous amount of careful deliberate investigative work said rcmp staff stt rob
20:11mccommon in an update last month the nova scotia government offered a 150 000 reward for information
20:20rcmp staff stt rob mccommon updated the news media in may he called jack and lily's case a complicated one
20:28requiring tremendous care ron ward the canadian press so far the mounties say they've drawn on units from
20:36other provinces interrogated dozens of people sought ten judicial authorizations to seize records or
20:43search warrants administered polygraph tests took possession of electronic devices viewed thousands of
20:49video files and are awaiting forensic tests on items found during the search including lily's pink
20:55blanket daniel initially told police and the globe on may 5th that the pink blanket found in the woods
21:01did not belong to lily but he later changed his story in a subsequent interview he suggested the
21:08blanket was planted taken from his weak old garbage he also claimed two of his sweaters mysteriously
21:14disappeared from his home after the kids went missing he declined to elaborate further behind the scenes
21:21people's concern for the children's welfare had already raised red flags a child protection supervisor
21:28in the nearby town of new glasgow rushed to prepare a memo for deputy minister craig beaton about jack and
21:33lily on the day the children disappeared according to redacted briefing notes obtained by the globe through
21:39freedom of information legislation two weeks later in mid-may another memo about the children was
21:46prepared for senior staff in the province's child welfare department
21:49opportunities and social development minister scott armstrong who also told the globe he asked for
21:56more information about his department's interaction with the children has so far declined to discuss
22:01how the government responded to concerns about jack and lily's well-being prior to their disappearance
22:07what is known about jack and lily's interaction with child welfare authorities is that a social worker
22:12came to the trailer over concerns raised by the school several months before their disappearance to
22:16assess their home life teachers and other professionals who work with children have a
22:21legal duty to report if they have reasonable grounds to suspect a child has may have is or is about to
22:27suffer abuse and home visits occur when there's reason to be concerned about a child's safety and care
22:33daniel however told the globe the visit was related to the kids learning difficulties at school
22:39he said the children were suspected of having autism and were scheduled to see a doctor the same month
22:44they vanished he declined to answer further questions about the involvement of child protection staff
22:50in the kids lives jack and lily attended salt springs elementary about a 20-minute bus ride from their
22:58home in lansdowne a child protection social worker contacted through the school paid a visit to the mobile
23:05home in the months before the disappearance steve wadden the globe and mail from the outside there were
23:12signs the children's home life was strained they were developmentally behind other children and arrived
23:18at school grubby and without appropriate winter clothing prompting staff to provide it for them
23:23according to a school board employee with direct knowledge the globe is not identifying the source
23:29because they're not authorized to disclose details about students last december jack came to school with a
23:36black eye according to a photo of him posted by his elementary school the photo of the class trip on
23:42december 13th 2024 five months before he and his sister disappeared shows him sitting next to other
23:48students in the forest with a green and purple bruise below his left eye another photo shows a possible
23:54black eye and bruising on jack's face in a photo taken in september 2024 an injury that daniel defended on
24:01social media saying it was caused by lily daniel did not respond to questions asking how jack received
24:07the black eye in december but in private facebook messages that were shared with the globe he
24:12acknowledged jack had many black eyes one time lily punched him in the face he wrote he also said lily
24:19had a black eye when the children went missing from an incident with a tonka truck that occurred
24:24on may 1st the day before the children disappeared she pushed down on the truck and it swung up and hit
24:30her in the face salt springs elementary shared a facebook photo of jack on a field trip last
24:37december 13th his stepfather said jack had many black eyes including one caused by his sister
24:44supplied the family was under pressure a confluence of financial woes left the couple turning to
24:50relatives for help like many lower tier workers at the mill daniel had been cut back to one shift a
24:56week during the spring fall because of an annual ban on heavy logging trucks on soggy local roads
25:02his car off the road because it needed repairs he couldn't afford wasn't drivable and he had to rely
25:08on his uncle who also worked at the mill to take him to work or malihia whose maternal grandmother had
25:13recently helped her buy a white nissan suv daniel's father earl said he bought the couple groceries and gas
25:20and provided firewood to heat their home daniel however denied having money problems and had
25:26claimed to friends that he was getting into investing and turning his life around after a divorce
25:32other means of cash flow had also been cut off in recent months child support payments from jack and
25:38lily's biological father had stopped after he lost his job malihia's monthly canada child benefit check
25:44or baby bonus which under federal guidelines would be about 1 900 per month was halted because daniel
25:51hadn't filed his taxes which were due by april 30th the struggles didn't end there malihia described
25:58daniel as controlling and said she had wanted out writing in a message to belinda on june 15th that
26:04i never wanted to stay there belinda wrote back saying she wished malihia would have reached out
26:10we would have done what we could to help i know malihia responded my mom is saying the same thing
26:17cindy malihia's mother declined to be interviewed after the children's disappearance malihia also
26:24confided in her paternal grandmother connie brooks a member of sipek and katek first nation
26:30she described how daniel would hold her down and take her phone he was having her i don't know what
26:36you call it scared she couldn't go anywhere do anything connie said that's what she told
26:43me and that's what i told the detectives when she asked her granddaughter about drug use in the home
26:48she said malihia told her that daniel concealed a drug addiction for nearly the first year of
26:53their relationship daniel did not respond to questions about these allegations but he has
26:58insisted in interviews with the globe that he's never struggled with drugs and does not have a drug
27:03problem despite that he has admitted to taking methamphetamines and pretty much everything he
27:10said he recently started attending narcotics anonymous three times a week and is taking online courses
27:16in anger management depression parenting child protection substance abuse suicide and violent
27:23behavior that are recognized by child protection officials i have to clear my name for cps
27:28he said it's best to do that connie brooks from sipek and katek first nation at home with son henry brooks
27:37says jack and lily's mother told her daniel would sometimes restrain her and take her phone
27:42she told police about this ingrid bulmer the globe and mail without answers theories abound for some maybe
27:51they're a way to hold out hope or to shift attention elsewhere there are those who believe the
27:55children are still alive taken or hidden somewhere one such rumor circulating in social media group
28:02chats is that lily and jack were taken by one of malihia's relatives and are being held on a reserve
28:08the rumor prompted sipek and katek chief michelle glasgow to respond on social media that whole dialogue
28:14was made up by a racist fool and anyone entertaining it is a racist fool she wrote in a text message that
28:20she posted to facebook on july 10th the vacuum of information about the missing kids has stoked a
28:26voracious demand for clues and conjecture on social media and in the online true crime community
28:33one of the most popular online sources in the true crime amateur community is
28:37it's a criming shame a vancouver-based youtube channel which has morphed into exclusively discussing
28:43the case live streams about jack and lily have been viewed half a million times
28:48for several hours multiple times a week host sunny austin invites guests on the show to discuss the
28:54case and rants provocatively calling out those who she disbelieves in the case of jack and lily
29:00daniel frequently pops up in her live chats like a whack-a-mole she says belinda has also called in as
29:07a guest most recently she presented text messages with malihia who when reached by phone refused to verify
29:14whether the text messages were hers malihia has also repeatedly declined to be interviewed by the globe
29:21saying police advised her not to speak to the media she said she has put her faith 100 in the
29:27authorities to find lily and jack on the ground the high-profile case has also conjured up other drama
29:34recently a local online content creator arrived at the home of malihia's mother cindy under the auspices
29:40of buying a horse trailer the man surreptitiously recorded a 45-minute interaction with her partner
29:47wade paris discussing the missing children and posted the video online
29:53daniel says he's frustrated with the accusations he faces from strangers about what happened to jack
29:58and lily chris donovan the globe and mail in interviews with the globe daniel has said he had
30:05nothing to do with the children's disappearance and he said he has passed a polygraph test with
30:09police to prove it he lamented the stigma the case carries over into his everyday life
30:16he's on stress leave from the mill people stare or give him dirty looks whenever he goes out in public
30:22recently at a used car dealership he said a salesman snatched a vehicle key from his hand and
30:27walked away when he realized he was talking to lily and jack's stepfather
30:31his facebook is filled with direct messages from strangers calling him a child killer
30:37where are the bodies he said they ask every day but then a profile that the globe has previously
30:42communicated with daniel on also appears in facebook chat groups frequently offering up
30:47riddles and conjecture that the children were taken by someone they know and are being held prisoner
30:53as long as i remain the target the sick person or persons that have the kids may relax and make a
30:57mistake rcmp better capitalize on that the user wrote this week his mother janie has said she also
31:05believes the children are still alive because she says they have never gone into the woods by themselves
31:10or wandered off a self-described hermit it took her more than two months to speak publicly doing an
31:17interview for cbc and releasing voice memos in a public social media chat she said she heard the children
31:23playing playing in the backyard from inside her camper on the morning they disappeared and she
31:27too believes someone took them in malihia's meek mac community of cypec and katik her father henry
31:34brooks is hopeful his grandchildren will be found he says the last time he spoke with the children jack
31:39told him he loved him it's weighing heavy on me he said really heavy at her home in middle muskotoboit
31:47belinda spends her days alternately tending her sprawling back garden and advocating for her missing
31:53grandchildren she appears on youtube live streams and in social media chats picking up breadcrumbs
31:59along the way that she hopes will lead to jack and lily in her blue and white kitchen where jack once
32:04crawled across the laminate floor and lily hammed it up in her gardening hats and old eyeglasses she is
32:10resigned to a grim reality i think somebody there must know what happened she said about the mobile home
32:16in lansdowne i don't believe my grandchildren are alive but to not get answers it's like no no
32:22there's answers out there two kids don't just disappear in the morning and nobody knows nothing
32:28so if they don't find answers outside that home then the answers are inside that home in hindsight
32:34she says she wishes she would have pushed harder to see the kids to see lily on her birthday in march
32:40looking at photos of the children from the past two years she noticed they looked thin possibly
32:45malnourished with dry cracked lips something she says she might have picked up on had she seen them in
32:50person and it makes her wonder about the other adults in their lives she recently learned others
32:56had concerns about the children's safety in the home she also wants to know what child protection
33:01social workers knew prior to jack and lily's disappearance whether they suspected the children
33:06were abused and what was being done about it i hate to say it but every one of us failed them belinda
33:12said we all failed these kids darren calabrese the globe and mail editor's note a previous version of
33:23this article incorrectly stated that lansdowne is northwest of halifax it is northeast of halifax
