During a Wednesday interview on CNN, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) was asked about President Donald Trump's attacks against the Smithsonian.
Transcript
00:00about something else that President Trump is very focused on,
00:03his latest move and posting on social media
00:06going after the Smithsonian Institution and Museums.
00:10And he already has ordered a review of it,
00:12but now saying that apparently he wants it to go further
00:15in review of all of the content in the museums.
00:18What he's suggesting is he says the Smithsonian's out of control,
00:21but also suggesting that museums are focusing too much
00:25on the way he puts it, in part, how bad slavery was.
00:29And he wants to take on the Smithsonian,
00:32just like he says he has taken on colleges and universities.
00:36Do you think that will work here?
00:38What do you think he's saying?
00:38Who is this guy? Is he a publicist for slavery?
00:40Like a lobbyist on behalf of slavery?
00:42It doesn't make any sense that he would want to erase
00:45one of the ugliest things that's ever happened in America
00:48and educate our children, especially about how we make sure it doesn't happen again.
00:53He's done the same thing with another ugly day in America, January 6th.
00:56He's tried to erase that day and take the heroes of that day,
00:59the police officers, and make them the villains
01:01so that he also erases his own responsibility.
01:04This is what he does.
01:05And the question is, will the Smithsonian cave?
01:08Colleges have caved. Law firms have caved.
01:10Entertainment companies have caved.
01:12The lesson that I've taken away from this
01:13is if you band together and show strength in numbers,
01:16you can stand up to this bully.
01:18But if you do these one-off drug deals,
01:19it just reduces who we are as a country
01:22and gets us one step closer toward authority.
01:24But it's also putting people in the position,
01:26I mean, we just had a Republican congressman on
01:28who John rightfully asked,
01:31like, what is your take on what the president's putting out here
01:33and putting Republicans in the position of reminding everyone
01:37that they think slavery is bad?
01:38I mean, just where the focus then becomes again,
01:42I'm not sure what to do with it.
01:44I'm not sure what to do with Republican congressmen
01:46who are not willing to be a check
01:47because in an ideal scenario...
01:50In his defense, he said slavery is bad.
01:51So we'll just put it that way.
01:52Well, good.
01:52But he also, you know, can fund the Smithsonian then
01:54when we vote on a budget and say,
01:56keep the slavery exhibits there.
01:57And the president also took the impeachment exhibits out
02:00in the section that covers Congress and the executive.
02:04Again, he can rewrite history,
02:05but he can't erase what actually happened.
02:07And he makes our children less educated when he does that.
02:10I want to ask you...
