00:00Ma'am, I need to take my seat.
00:02No, it's alright.
00:03Doctor says I gotta do one good day today for my health.
00:06Come on, please.
00:07Let me take that for you.
00:09I was an FBI agent.
00:11That night, I was riding the subway home.
00:13Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a man in black.
00:15He slid his backpack under the seat.
00:17Then, just before the train took off, he walked off and left the bag behind.
00:21My instincts kicked in right away.
00:23I went to where he was standing.
00:24I crouched down and opened the backpack.
00:26Inside was a ticking time bomb.
00:28My heart sank.
00:29I rushed over and pulled the emergency brake.
00:31The train screeched to a halt.
00:39Hey, FBI!
00:40I need everybody to exit the train into the tunnels quietly and calmly right now.
00:44There's a bomb!
00:46Someone yelled, bomb!
00:47And the entire car fell into chaos.
00:49People panicked and rushed to the doors.
00:52Screaming filled the space.
00:53In that moment, I saw the worst side of humanity.
00:56Big, strong men shoved past the elderly and children.
00:59Scrambling to save themselves, I scanned the car.
01:01That's when I saw the mother and daughter I had given my seat to earlier.
01:04They were trapped by the crowd.
01:06They couldn't move.
01:07I ran to them.
01:08Scooped up the little girl.
01:09Shielded them as we pushed toward the exit.
01:11We had just jumped off.
01:13When a massive blast wave hit me, my vision blurred.
01:15I forced my eyes open.
01:17The mother and daughter were safe.
01:18Right before I passed out, I saw the number on the train, 2781.
01:21I didn't know that number would soon pull me into something much bigger.
01:25Thanks to the quick response, there weren't many casualties.
01:27But I had a concussion and was put on leave.
01:29Crowd surrounded the police line.
01:31That's when I saw him again.
01:32The man in black.
01:33He was in the crowd.
01:34I reached for backup.
01:35He turned and ran.
01:37I gritted my teeth, pushed through the pain and chased after him.
01:40He led me into a quiet alley, but then he vanished.
01:42I pulled my gun, stepped slowly into the dark.
01:45I got near a trash bin and something slammed into me from behind.
01:48He tried to take my weapon.
01:50I wrestled him down, but my body wasn't right.
01:52I was dizzy, weak.
01:53He pinned me to the ground.
01:55That's when I saw it.
01:56A snake tattoo on his waist.
01:57He gave up the fight and ran.
01:59I staggered to my feet and chased him again.
02:01Then, a car came out of nowhere and hit me hard.
02:04I hit the pavement and couldn't move.
02:06I watched helplessly as he disappeared into the night.
02:08One year later, because of that incident, I was reassigned to a desk job at the White House.
02:12My schedule changed completely.
02:14I got up at 5 p.m., clocked in by 7,030 at night.
02:18My new job was strange.
02:19Every night at 8, I'd open a certain office door, trade shifts with the guy inside,
02:24and spend the night watching over a single phone.
02:26It was an old landline.
02:27It had never rung.
02:28But if it ever did, it meant a threat to national security.
02:32To me, this felt like exile.
02:33Alone every night, just me and a silent phone.
02:36I had no idea how long this would go on.
02:38But that night, the phone rang.
02:39It was the first time I had ever heard it ring.
