00:00To actually understand, because you have to look at the games your opponent played,

00:05certain decisions he or she made before.

00:07But if you can get the best of this knowledge,

00:11recognizing the strengths and the weaknesses of your opponent,

00:14then you can start thinking about designing the game

00:17that will be beneficial for you and will be most annoying for your opponent.

00:23I followed this wisdom when I played Eretroly Karpov, and I did well.

00:28So I succeeded in almost regularly changing the game

00:34to the character of the position that fit me better than Eretroly Karpov.

00:43Now, I failed to follow the same logic when I played Vladimir Kramnik.

00:50I don't think that in the year 2000, when I lost my title match against him in London,

00:55I was an inferior player.

00:56But in the match, I tried to play his game,

01:00and I failed to take myself away from the psychological trap,

01:07playing positions where Kramnik was much more comfortable.

01:13I think it's not that I couldn't play them.

01:16Actually, I won one game later on in this endgame against Kramnik a year later.

01:20But during the match, when you deal with psychology,

01:24one player against another one,

01:26you have to be comfortable, and you have to make your opponent uncomfortable.

01:30And while you never know exactly what your opponent is comfortable or not,

01:35because in many cases when you are talking about sort of amateurs chess

01:42or a club-level chess, your knowledge of your opponent is highly limited.

01:45But you know exactly who you are.

01:48And if you play the game that is not making you feel comfortable,

01:54if you don't enjoy it, if you don't feel that the game can...
