At a White House press briefing on Tuesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about President Trump's comments on Washington D.C. 'slums' amid federal takeover.
Transcript
00:00Thank you, Caroline. Three questions about the D.C. crackdown.
00:03First, I was wondering if you could clarify something President Trump said.
00:08He mentioned getting rid of the slums where criminals live.
00:11Was he talking about tents or permanent residential buildings?
00:15And then the mayor has expressed an interest in clarifying how much of a focus
00:19illegal immigration enforcement is as part of this crackdown.
00:23Can you say anything about that?
00:24Sure.
00:25Are there any preview on the beautification?
00:26Three questions. I'll try to answer all three of them pointedly for you.
00:30First, when it comes to what you said and the President said the slums of Washington, D.C.,
00:35he's referring to the most dangerous communities, neighborhoods, and streets in this city
00:40where, unfortunately, violence has ravaged these communities and taken the lives of, again,
00:45far too many law-abiding D.C. residents.
00:48We know on July 5th of this year, just more than a month ago,
00:52a three-year-old beautiful young girl was shot and killed in her car with her family
00:57in one of these communities, which is why there has been a surge,
01:01despite what many of you have been falsely reporting.
01:03And I believe it was the Washington Post who put out a map claiming it to be fact-based
01:08when it was just based on, I don't know, accounts that they've heard on the street,
01:11not actual statistics and data.
01:13So we went and reconfigured the numbers, and as I said, half, nearly half of all the non-illegal
01:19alien-related arrests have occurred in words 7 and 8 in the District of Columbia,
01:24where we know there's the highest rate of crime.
01:27So we'll continue to do that.
01:29And what was your second question, Stephen?
01:30Legal immigration, how much of a focus that is?
01:33Yeah, look, I mean, the focus is to make D.C. safe and beautiful
01:36and to remove public safety threats and violent criminals from our streets.
01:39If federal law enforcement, with the help of the Metropolitan Police Department,
01:44come across illegal aliens, of course we are going to abide by this administration's policy
01:49of law and order, and we are going to remove illegal criminals from our nation's capital.
01:54They will be detained and deported, just like they are in every other community across the country.
