The Scotsman Fringe First Awards Week Two - Niusia
Transcript
00:00I'm here with Beth Hustley Pat Yates, who are writer and performer and director of
00:10Nusha, which is just one of Fringe first. Hi!
00:13Hello!
00:14Hello, hello!
00:15So you come all the way from Australia for your first Fringe for this play.
00:18So how does it feel to get an award like this in your first play?
00:21Overachievers!
00:23Mind-boggling!
00:25Everybody comes to Fringe with a dream and an ambition, and to be able to come here with
00:29the most incredible support of teams.
00:31We wouldn't be here without my incredible producer, Araya Presentation, our design team
00:35back in Melbourne, our production stage manager team.
00:38We've had the most remarkable support from all people in Melbourne, La Mama Theatre,
00:42Must Theatre, the university student theatre we started out with.
00:45We're a really grassroots team, so to be able to come over here with a little show that could,
00:49because we started writing in 2019, the very end of it.
00:53So it's been a long journey, but one that has been filled with such laughter and love
00:59and support.
01:00And so it feels unspeakably special.
01:03Fantastic.
01:04And what is the play about it?
01:06Based on your grandmother?
01:07Yes, so Nusha was the name of my late grandmother.
01:10She was a survivor of the Holocaust.
01:12She was a prisoner in Auschwitz, and she saved her lives when she was in Auschwitz.
01:17So she was a hero.
01:18But I remember her as a bit of a bitch.
01:21So Nusha is about how all of those things can be true at once, and it's about the often
01:26difficult relationships that can exist between daughters, mothers, and grandmothers.
01:30And at the end of the day, it's a love letter to all the women that have come before me,
01:34and me stepping into a heritage that is about resistance and strength and pride.
01:42Great.
01:43Well, congratulations on your win.
01:44Thank you so much for joining us.
01:46Cheers.
