Spain battles record fires despite end of heatwave bringing cooler temperature

The Spanish government will declare the areas affected by the deadly wildfires that have ravaged much of its northern Galicia province as disaster zones.

00:00Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will declare the areas affected by the deadly wildfires as disaster zones.
00:08The fires, currently ranging for a tenth consecutive day, have burned through an area of more than 3,800 square kilometers,
00:15according to the EU's European Forest Fire Information System.
00:19Thousands of Spanish firefighters aided by soldiers and water-bombing aircraft were still at work battling the flames,
00:26particularly severe in the northwestern Galicia province.
00:30The Interior Ministry says firefighting units from Germany arrived in Spain on Tuesday
00:35as part of a European Coordination Agreement and will be helping to fight the blazes.
00:40Madrid says at least four people were killed in this year's wildfire season.
00:45Police have detained more than 20 people for suspected arson
00:48and are investigating almost 90 others for allegedly sparking or contributing to the disaster.
00:53The country is still battling a dozen active fires,
00:56which continue to rage despite the end of Europe's record-setting heat wave,
01:01bringing in cooler temperatures.
01:03In neighboring Portugal, more than 3,700 firefighters were at work on Tuesday to brave the flames.
01:10At least two people were killed by the fires, which have also torched over 2,300 square kilometers.
01:16The figure is a five-fold increase over an almost two-decade average,
