00:00This is the vanishing hitchhiker of Route 17.
00:03If you're ever driving late at night on the long dot-dot night,
00:06dark stretch of Route 17 in the Appalachians,
00:09you might see a young woman standing at the side of the road.
00:12She's dressed in an old-fashioned prom dress,
00:15and her hair is wet as if she's just come from a storm.
00:18If you stop, she'll get in your car and ask you to take her home.
00:22But halfway there, she'll vanish.
00:24If you continue to the house, an old woman will answer the door.
00:28When you tell her about the hitchhiker, she'll go pale and say,
00:31that was my daughter.
00:33She died on prom night right there on Route 17.
00:36She's been trying to come home ever since.
00:38Some people say the car gets cold just before she disappears.
00:42Others say she leaves behind a damp seat that smells like lilies.
00:46And some say she warns them of a dangerous curve ahead and they avoid a wreck.
00:50Is she a restless ghost, a guardian spirit, or just a trick of the light?
00:54I don't know.
00:55But what I do know is that on Route 17, no one drives alone for long.
