00:00Hey, what's up? It is Lisha B. Clay. Hopefully you watch the Michigan Central Station video for touring the 313.
00:06What we learned while we were there is that it's not just one building, it's an entire complex.
00:12Exactly. So now we're taking you in a whole new adventure, the new lab.
00:16We have our girl Catherine here to show us all the good vibes.
00:19So Catherine, talk about new lab.
00:21What is exactly the purpose of all these different innovation buildings here?
00:26As you described, Michigan Central is a 30-acre campus, and new lab, which is in the old Roosevelt Post Office and Book Depository Building, is our center of innovation.
00:37We like to call it the engine of the district.
00:40New lab is where we have 240 companies, 30 venture VCs working.
00:46It is the heart of the tech infrastructure at Michigan Central.
00:50So what kind of products would come out of new lab, just that consumers may see?
00:55You have aerial mobility operators working here.
00:58I don't know if you remember news about the first electric road that happened maybe about two years ago.
01:03That's happened right outside of the doors here.
01:05So we have a range of companies working here.
01:07And we also think one of the things that makes Michigan Central really unique is the infrastructure for startups and companies.
01:16For example, if you're a logistics company and you're thinking about testing the charging capacity for your vehicle, you have the charging road.
01:25The way we're thinking about the online line of sight for drone operators, we have a whole operation and staging place to test your drone technology.
01:36We have a ton of local startups.
01:39As we all know, Detroit is a global city.
01:41So our ideas, you know, really play on a bigger stage.
01:45And it is actually a place where that can come to life.
01:48So we have a ton of local startups operating out of the center.
01:52So we're learning so much about new lab, not only the startups, but the ventures that are happening here.
01:56What programming also happens at new lab?
01:58This is another thing to keep in mind for Detroiters.
02:02We're actively thinking about the pipeline of tech talent that's coming up in the city of Detroit.
02:08At the station, we have a youth floor where we have partners like Google, Boys and Girls Club.
02:13Code 313, I believe, is the name of the organization that is thinking about drone operations for youth.
02:20So in September, we have our youth drone day, helping them understand all of the opportunities that come from that emerging sector.
02:27I love that.
02:28So new lab's helping everybody be their most creative selves.
02:32Yes, and innovative.
02:33So Detroit's known as an innovative city, is that kind of the spirit behind where this came from?
02:39Is to like, hey, let's keep that Detroit innovation to the world out there?
02:43Yes.
02:44Ford wanted a front seat towards emerging technology.
02:47And honestly, all of manufacturing and auto, we all require that.
02:51We look up and sometimes, you know, a lot's happening on each of the coasts, a lot's happening globally.
02:56But this investment was made to help make sure that the technology and the innovation and the ideas for, you know, the next 50 years can happen here.
03:06And that they have a place to grow.
03:08It's been a fantastic day just learning so much about new lab.
03:12And the crazy thing is, we didn't even learn everything yet.
03:15And they don't even know the things that I pocketed while we were walking around in there, which is awesome.
03:19Don't tell them.
03:20The things I left there.
03:23Uh-huh.
03:25Well, if you want to know more about new lab, you can obviously go to Michigan Central Station's website for more,
03:31because we're about to go and figure out what else is happening and being created right here in Metro Detroit.
03:35Michigan Central Station is the purpose of Michigan Central Station.
