Transcript
00:00good morning and welcome to this episode of the scotsman golf show my name is mark atkinson
00:09sports editor and today i'm joined by our chief golf correspondent martin dempster we're here to
00:16discuss all things bob mcintyre after he came so close to winning what would have been the biggest
00:21title of his career at the bmw championship at caves hill on sunday night losing out to scottie
00:27sheffield in a thrilling climax martin you uh had to come back a little early from some time off
00:34as always the case with uh scottish golfers they time it well but it was well worth it given um
00:39an incredible performance by by bob ultimately what were your main emotions when the 72nd
00:46hole took place and mcintyre finished second yeah i think a bit like bob himself i think
00:54disappointed uh when you when you go into a final round with a four shot lead no matter what that
00:59event is and this was a big event um you're looking to get the job done and bob of course won twice on
01:07the pga tour last year finished second in the the us open this year top 10 in the open uh he was
01:14certainly uh in a mindset that he he felt he could get the job done uh he'd played brilliantly uh over
01:21the first three days um played with sheffler in the the third round on saturday handled that really
01:28well um and then went out in the final round with sheffler in his group again we knew sheffler was
01:35going to come at him he's that type of player he's relentless uh hence why he's dominated the game
01:41uh for the last three years uh but i think the one thing that bob will be disappointed about is that
01:47he started uh poorly bogey bogey start uh sheffler bird did the first and that really set the tone for
01:55bob's day um which ultimately uh will be a disappointing one when he looks back be it purely on
02:04what happened on sunday is there a case martin to to go that this is all part of the learning
02:12experience with bob mcintyre is it i think we're sometimes quick to forget that he is still only 29
02:19years old and um a lot's come his way in the past couple of years since he graduated onto the pga
02:25tour and and while it's desperate he didn't get that title he's not been in that in that sort of
02:31position many times before in his career oh and and yeah i mean we also have to look at the player who
02:39he was up against it essentially was a two-horse race in that final round sam burns
02:45got close at one point but it really was going to come down to bob and sheffler um and as you say
02:52um sheffler has won majors he's won two majors this year uh he's miles clear in the the top of
03:00the world ranking so that that that's the the task that bob had uh as you say he's he he's not been in
03:08this position too often in his career um those wins were were fantastic wins kit canada with his dad
03:15on the bag and of course the the genesis scottish open on home turf was a a really fantastic victory
03:22uh the u.s open this year um i wouldn't say he sort of totally came out the blue to finish second
03:29but it was a tough final day and and at one point we thought bob was going to
03:33win until jj spawn finished uh birdie birdie to to pip him uh on this occasion he was the man
03:40with that lead um and then he had played really well mark there's no doubt about that he he plays
03:46a really aggressive style of golf that people like um and he did say he felt comfortable going out on
03:53Sunday there was nothing to suggest that he was he was going to struggle the way he did but that's
03:58golf um you get off to a poor start it sets the tone and you're also up against a guy who you know
04:05is just going to be relentless from start to finish um i think bob could have imploded to be
04:12honest i think yeah he was disappointing the way he played but i think he if his head got really down
04:16he could have dropped down to fourth or fifth and that would have been massively disappointing the fact
04:21that he still finished second yeah he wanted to win but runner-up finish was worth more than two
04:27million dollars uh he's now into the world's top 10 for the first time he's climbed to eighth
04:32uh he's ninth in the fedex cup going into the season ending tour championship um and he's uh
04:39secured an automatic spot in the rider cup finishing he'll finish second in the the points
04:45list behind rory mccaroy that alone tells you the the level of golf that bob mcintyre's playing at the
04:51moment i was going to ask you martin do you feel if you were to look at bob mc the bob mcintyre 12 months
04:58ago to now do you feel that he has progressed as a golfer
05:02massively yeah there's no doubt about that i think his statistics uh will will prove that
05:09um he was he always had a a sort of a good week in him uh as we know saw in the canada and we saw in
05:17the the renaissance club in the genesis scottish open uh but his game this season i think i'm right
05:23in saying i think he missed the cut in the masters in april and i don't think he's missed a cut since
05:30then and yes some of those have been in these signature events where they don't have a cup but
05:34his level of golf's been fantastic uh and and that's why no one will be more disappointed about
05:42what happened yesterday than bob mcintyre because he knows the level of golf he can produce and
05:49yes that was i think in terms of stature i think that event yesterday would have been a big been a
05:56bigger win on his cv obviously canada we talked about his dad being on the bag and scotland's
06:03always going to be a big one but that would have been huge and that's why he will be hurting at the
06:09moment because he didn't finish that job off especially holding a four shot lead the great
06:15thing about golf martin especially this time of year is that there's no time to wallow in any
06:20self-pity or disappointment there's a lot on the line again for bob starting on thursday just talk
06:27the viewers through what what's coming up for bob in the next month to two months yeah well obviously
06:33the the tour championship the the pga tours tour championship at east lake and atlanta that involves
06:39the the top 30 players uh on the points list uh at the end of the season uh he qualified for that
06:46for the first time last year which was a you know an impressive feat uh and as i said earlier he's going
06:53in uh on this occasion in ninth place so he'll he'll be aiming to go one better in terms of a win
07:02uh that that'll be his target this week there's no doubt about that sheffield again will be the man to
07:06beat um so no that'll then mark the end of his uh season in america and it's going to be a
07:13a career best season uh over there um and then he'll then turn his attention to the bmw pga championship
07:23um at wentworth and then a couple of weeks after that he's got the rider cup uh and
07:31second time in a row he's going to qualify automatically for the european team
07:36um he was unbeaten in three matches in rome as part of a winning side there uh and he's
07:43uh now going to be heading to beth page black uh in the end of september uh aiming to be
07:50part of another winning team under luke donald so much to look forward to you mentioned the r word
07:57the rider cup we we should talk about that very briefly before we sign off as you say bob mcintyre
08:02will be we'll be there of that there is no doubt uh are the teams now pretty much set for for beth page
08:09or are there a few spots to up for grabs yeah i think in terms of the the european team uh obviously
08:15there's there's 12 spots uh six uh automatic spots are going to be filled and at the moment they are
08:22going to go to rory mcleroy uh bob um justin rose tommy fleetwood um sepp straka and uh shane lowry
08:34um sorry not not sepp straka tyrrell hatton and shane lowry are the six uh then thereafter you've got
08:42the likes of sepp straka ludwig eberg um victor hovland uh rasmus hojard uh are all certainly in
08:50position where you've got to think that they've got a really good chance of making the team and
08:55then of course we've got the john ram uh who he's down the points list a bit but he won the individual
09:02title and live at the weekend um you've got to think he's going to secure one of the six picks
09:08uh and we've got the the betfred british masters uh hosted by uh sir nick faldo at the belfry this
09:15week where the likes of rasmus hojard his twin brother nicolai uh marco penge who's uh he won
09:22for the second time the weekend uh in denmark on the dp world tour uh these guys are uh sort of vying
09:30for for one spot which certainly makes this week's event very interesting indeed and the likes of harry
09:37hall the englishman uh he wears the flat cap um he's been playing well in the pga tour he's made
09:45it to east lake for that tour championship and he's another one in the in the frame for that
09:50final spot exciting few weeks ahead of that there's no doubt and it'll quickly help us get over any
09:57disappointment from what happened on sunday night over in the states martin i know you've got a busy
10:02schedule thank you so much for joining us today we'll have all the coverage of this week's golfing
10:08events not just internationally but domestic as well for martin and of course all the build up to
