00:00It was only when I realised that I actually don't choose a massive part of who I am and who I'm proud to be now, that I felt happy I guess, or happier, and I wrote a song about it recently, can I sing it for you?
00:11Yes!
00:18So I'm just jumping off my bike because I'm here, Wakefield City Centre, on a Sunday, to see ADMT.
00:27If you've not heard of him, you may have heard his song, Yorkshire, and we're going to see him today, he's doing a live pop-up gig at Trinity Walk.
00:40It's been amazing, I've released my first single with a new record label, it's actually two singles with a new record label, it's been fun, we're working on the next one now, loads of content, it's been good, exciting, you know, I guess I've blagged it this far, and I'm mad grateful for how it's been.
00:57And tell me about your song, Yorkshire, that people absolutely love here, how did that come about?
01:05To be fair, it just came about because I think I'd spent a lot of my life trying to escape where I was from, and then I just sort of had this little moment where I was like, actually, no, there's a massive part of me that is this place and this culture and this mad mix of people has become such a part of me, then I need to speak about it, I guess.
01:23But the song in general is about just being proud of where you come from, it's not just about Yorkshire, it's just because I'm from Yorkshire that I wrote those lyrics and that first verse, you know what I mean?
01:32But yeah.
01:33And you used to work as a fishmonger on the market.
01:36Who's told you that? I did.
01:37I did, yeah, yeah, yeah, I used to work on fish market, I used to work on fruit market, and then I worked in a factory for ages.
01:45And was that when you were like 16 or?
01:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was young. I think I started on fish market when I was like 14, because I can remember not being able to, I wasn't allowed to do certain things because you couldn't touch knives until a certain point because you got to topple off work.
01:59Yeah. And how did you actually get into the music industry? What was your big break?
02:04I don't think there's any such thing as a big break, personally. I don't think, I think it's an accumulation of lots of different things that happen and also like a lot of hard work.
02:13So there's lots, obviously 50 Cent did see me and I'm super grateful for that, by the way, because that would be the biggest thing that's happened.
02:19But also lots of other things, Teddy Swims, I got to sing with Teddy Swims, he invited me on tour, you know, like lots of things happen online and stuff.
02:27I think it's an accumulation of many, many wins, which I'm super grateful for, that become that, what people class as a big break, maybe, do you know what I mean?
02:35And do you see yourself staying in Doncaster?
02:38It's cheap, yeah, probably.
02:41I mean, no, eventually, I don't know. I don't know what I want to do.
02:45I'm obviously like, I want to keep giving back to Yorkshire and to just working class people in England in general, just because that's what I am.
