Wildfires in Spain and Portugal force evacuations and deployment of thousands of emergency personnel

A heatwave is continuing to affect the Iberian Peninsula. Thousands of firefighters have been deployed to battle ongoing blazes and towns have been evacuated. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited affected regions to meet with the heads of emergency teams.

00:00Thousands of emergency personnel battled wildfires gripping Spain and
00:06Portugal as a heat wave continues to ravage the Iberian Peninsula.
00:10High temperatures have sparked a wave of fires that are of particular concern in Galicia,
00:15León and Cáceres.
00:17Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the affected regions meeting with emergency
00:22teams and saying that the next few days would be critical.
00:25The wildfires have already reportedly burned over 115,000 hectares of land including more
00:32than 50,000 in Galicia alone.
00:34Neighboring Portugal, around 3,200 firefighters battled nine major fires over the weekend.
00:41Mainland Portugal has been affected by multiple fires since July. High temperatures have led
00:46to the declaration of a state of alert which remains in effect.
