Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate after record temperatures across Europe caused forest fires throughout the Mediterranean. Greece, Spain, and Portugal have all ordered mass evacuations after fires reached cities and towns in all three countries. In Portugal, thousands of firefighters continued to battle wildfires as flames lit up the night sky. The country is under a state of alert until Sunday due to the weather forecast and extreme fire risk.

00:04Talks on securing a global treaty to combat plastic pollution have failed to reach an
00:09agreement at the United Nations. The talks towards a legally binding instrument on tackling plastic
00:15pollution opened on August 5th and had been originally scheduled to close on Thursday 14th
00:22in Geneva after five failed rounds of talks over the past two and a half years. The draft presented
00:29by the chair of the negotiation committee Luis Baez Valdivieso did not limit plastic production
00:35or addressed chemicals used in plastic products causing it to be marked non-acceptable by the
00:42European Union and rejected by most participant countries and organizations. On the other hand
00:46oil producing states want the treaty to focus primarily on waste management.
