00:04Talks on securing a global treaty to combat plastic pollution have failed to reach an
00:09agreement at the United Nations. The talks towards a legally binding instrument on tackling plastic
00:15pollution opened on August 5th and had been originally scheduled to close on Thursday 14th
00:22in Geneva after five failed rounds of talks over the past two and a half years. The draft presented
00:29by the chair of the negotiation committee Luis Baez Valdivieso did not limit plastic production
00:35or addressed chemicals used in plastic products causing it to be marked non-acceptable by the
00:42European Union and rejected by most participant countries and organizations. On the other hand
00:46oil producing states want the treaty to focus primarily on waste management.
