00:02:52Blind huh this is just where I figured we'd hit this stuff Brad
00:03:009 okay go ahead
00:03:10Did you hear that?
00:03:15He waits were over the ridge and down to a thousand tells us the land of Saugus
00:03:18It'll be the same story of Saugus they'll send us on to Bakersfield with that headwind we haven't got too much gas
00:03:25Flight 9 picking up landing beam give me lights I'm coming in
00:03:48He's landing you heard me tell him to turn back to Saugus mr. Howell tell runners to report the chiefs office at once
00:03:55Yes sir
00:04:02The
00:04:04The
00:04:06The
00:04:08The
00:04:09The
00:04:14want to see me yes Brad did you receive instructions not to land here that's right why didn't you
00:04:25follow them I was over the ridge down to a thousand I knew saw this would be souped up
00:04:29and it was too risky to try to make his feel with the gas I had then you did ignore order sure but
00:04:34I brought her in my judgment was right no pilot is right it goes against ground instructions
00:04:39the old bird dog so you're the one that's making this beef that's right that's my job what do you
00:04:49want to do about it you know the air commerce rules upside down and backwards so what any
00:04:54pilot who violates ground instructions is subject to suspension and you're no exception Brad I didn't
00:05:00expect to be with you personal differences don't enter into this not much all right oh I'm taking
00:05:08up your airline rating for 60 days I'd give you more if I could give me a ticket
00:05:22all right boy scout here it is in pieces you're a chump Brad for what I'm not thinking of pushing
00:05:33around for a swivel cave here I'm watching out sorry Lawson I know he's one of your best men a couple of
00:05:45months without a paycheck and he'll change his mind he hasn't in the 10 years I've known him
00:06:03that's me I'm strictly a ground squirrel oh there's nothing to be afraid of after one trip up there
00:06:19you'll be nuts about it and it's only a buck and a half really mr. Hungerford will take you personally
00:06:25what about it hello Joe hi Brad still flying the Salt Lake run for Pacific wise guy now I just quit quit
00:06:33what's wrong I guess I'm getting sensitive well what's on your mind I heard you want to sell out
00:06:39you interested I might be let me tell you something Brad this place is a gold mine wait a minute Joe I
00:06:46don't want to go mine just tell me what you want for this broken down kite orchid come on in the office
00:06:51and I was only trying to cut him for a buck and a half
00:07:21there's a lot of vibration in that motor she's been sick and I wait for months never bothered us
00:07:26what it bothers me overhaul it keep picking on little things like that you're gonna run out of
00:07:31dough listen Walt I won't fly ship it isn't right I don't expect anyone else to
00:07:36oh I learned more than one lesson from you than I ever did from Joe hunger for it you're almost ready to
00:07:52solo how about a little hop today with Brad Reynolds King Airways skip Rogers here up there are you the
00:08:12sister you was telling me about I am
00:08:22oh boy I can hardly wait till I fly that plane alone well business looks good
00:08:42uh-oh so this is it this is my sister mr. Reynolds how do you do miss Rogers wanted to tell me about
00:08:53this good well do you see I well I wanted to surprise you I'm surprising you you're quitting
00:08:59right now oh but and I'm ready to solo oh yes miss Rogers he is ready to continue in flying mr. Reynolds
00:09:06but but why oh and doesn't look at flying the way we do she thinks it's dangerous that's an old
00:09:13fashion idea on this Rogers flying no longer an experiment it's been proven that I'm familiar
00:09:17with all the statistics just that I'm opposed to flying for anyone as young as get out of here
00:09:21her talk you think I was just a kid I'm almost 18 Oscar oh well it's a good thing you're telling
00:09:27me to take down a motor grab look at the smack shut the pieces and everyone's ready to go yeah yeah
00:09:32and another are your pen take down some old coffee you don't have a job for this Rogers skips old
00:09:37enough why I was flying when I was only 15 me then some children are more precocious than others
00:09:43on makes and mr. Reynolds a few weeks ago skip asked me for $25 presumably to buy a mounted
00:09:50asiatic ibis for his research ornithology I just found out he used the money in the down payment on a
00:09:55flying course here oh that's the usual deposit well naturally the money's refunded if the student
00:10:00doesn't continue so I'm afraid not there you see skips I forget that skips underage and did this
00:10:05without my consent just consider what he can mean to a young fellow like skip I'm not here to
00:10:10debate the merits of flying you'll just refund the money that's Jewish we'll consider the instant close
00:10:14there you are thank you I suggest that he uses his first payment on the course and home cooking for
00:10:24time I knew you'd see it our way goodbye I wouldn't give her a dime back if I was you you are a great
00:10:35help what I do nothing nothing is that a sample of Joe hunger puts regular paying students ah she's

00:11:10last nine hundred we'll take care of it at the end of the month just send us a statement another
00:11:14statement eh well the boss made one this morning and here it is no money from comment no gas from
00:11:20media wait a minute wait a minute how can we operate without gas and how can John D operate without
00:11:26money oh you get paid why we're making money hand over hand well hand over something if God was here
00:11:32you'd pay like that well where is he he's up giving a lesson right now don't want the office what now
00:11:55don't the media guys waiting he says he's gonna have his dough today how much we owe him they'll take an
00:12:00editing machine to figure out that bite it's for 900 gallons I can just about make it but oh we got
00:12:08them persons coming to COD you know that ship ain't gonna fly without pistons did you ever see one
00:12:12fly without gasoline sure gliders but we ain't got none hi Brad hi no no no don't let me disturb your

00:12:49shit Brad I wouldn't trust those guys you can't blame mr. Jeffers after what happened out at silver
00:12:54the other day I go on there to collect and the flying field is planted in tomatoes that's what they're paying
00:12:59them off in tomatoes three hundred bucks worth of tomatoes okay well there's only one thing left to do now

00:14:22Mr. Reynolds in?
00:14:23You bet he is.
00:14:24Would you please have a seat in the office, and I'll come here in a minute.
00:14:28Yes, sir.
00:14:30Yes, sir.
00:14:31Hey, Brad!
00:14:32Brad!
00:14:34What's the matter?
00:14:35Boy doesn't pay to advertise.
00:14:36We got a bite.
00:14:37Good.
00:14:37Where is he?
00:14:38I hustled him right into the office.
00:14:39Did he say he's interested in buying?
00:14:41Well, if I'm going to judge human nature, he's loaded for bear and ready for the truck.
00:14:44Come on, before we start dozing around.
00:14:47You better wait here, Walt.
00:14:50Good luck, baby.
00:14:53Oh.
00:14:53How are you, Mr. Reynolds?
00:14:55Hello, Mr. Crandall.
00:14:56Sit down, won't you?
00:14:57I just dropped in about that note.
00:15:00You know, Mr. Reynolds, it's 60 days over due.
00:15:03Yes.
00:15:03I was coming into the bank tomorrow to talk to you about a renewal.
00:15:06I'm afraid, Mr. Reynolds, under the circumstances, a renewal is out of the question.
00:15:10I've advertised a place for sale, and until I close the deal, I thought you might give
00:15:14me an extension.
00:15:14You don't have any offers?
00:15:16The ad's only been running two days.
00:15:17Well, we want to be fair about this.
00:15:19Suppose we carry it over for, well, let's say a week.
00:15:23A week.
00:15:24I'm afraid if that's the best you can do, there's going to be a merger.
00:15:31The Riverdale National Bank and the Comet Airport.
00:15:33That's happened before.
00:15:34This is the fifth time we've owned this place.
00:15:36You want to be a flyer by now.
00:15:38As a matter of fact, I am.
00:15:41Well, congratulations.
00:15:44Goodbye, Mr. Reynolds.
00:15:45I'll see you next week.
00:15:47Goodbye, Mr. Crandall.
00:15:52It's a pleasure, mister.
00:15:56Goodbye.
00:15:58That's a big job.
00:15:59Terrific.
00:16:00When does he take over?
00:16:01A week from today.
00:16:02Yes, sir.
00:16:03I can tell a soft touch for a minute that he may eyes on him.
00:16:06He'll come barging in here just as innocent as you did with Joe Hungerford.
00:16:09Yeah.
00:16:10What kind of deal did you make?
00:16:11By giving him the airport and $800, I'm even.
00:16:14Gee, that's great.
00:16:16Hey, what do you mean you're even?
00:16:19Isn't the airport and $800?
00:16:22He's even.
00:16:25Even the airport.
00:16:36I don't know.
00:16:56come on in and get it Brad I do I just wanted to find out if you're in a good mood I'm always in
00:17:19the mode to discuss business with our competitors sit down and yet a crow and I'd rather do it
00:17:24standing up what's the matter to make a short story very short the bank's taking me over hmm I heard
00:17:31things were rather slow over there but I didn't know they were that bad I'm right down to the
00:17:36claw but the education I got was worth it cigarette no thanks look chief I I know I'm in no position
00:17:44to choose but how about putting me on that new luxury liner it's your honey Brad you're making
00:17:48it awfully tough for me but there's something I've got to tell you you're washed up at Pacific
00:17:53wash are you kidding I wish I were but that's the verdict from the main office so Jim Howell's still
00:18:05gunning for me Howell had nothing to do with this it's part of the company's new policy new policy
00:18:11that's a lot of weeds what's that got to do with my flying ability nothing it's your age my age come
00:18:20on Lawson what's the real lowdown that's it Brad Pacific wants younger men fellows in their twenties
00:18:27if 10 years of transport flying means nothing to Pacific I'm going over the Union wait a minute Brad I
00:18:33don't want to see you take another slap in the face like I just gave you you don't have to pull your
00:18:37punches then here it is Brad all the other lines have adopted the same policy you talk like I'm through
00:18:46not necessarily why a fellow with your ability shouldn't have any trouble connecting somewhere
00:18:52Bob Cooper's doing all right down in Honduras flying chicle that's the old washout routine chief but
00:18:59before I head top chewing gum in Honduras I'll demonstrate corn plasters and maces window
00:19:03hello Brad how's everything I got some bad news for you everything's great
00:19:14gentlemen I know you'll be pleased to hear the student training program is at last a reality
00:19:27this means a new page in the history of aviation we believe the inclusion of flight training in
00:19:34colleges will ultimately result in 20,000 trained pilots yearly to the aviation industry it will
00:19:41supply needed manpower which in turn means increased production eventually placing the
00:19:47airplane within reach of the average American citizen I have here a list of eligible colleges chosen for
00:19:53their scholastic standing these are located in districts under your individual jurisdiction you'll
00:19:59make a CAA inspection of all schools in your area recommending the one best suited to our need
00:20:05meanwhile we're accepting bids from private airports for the use of their equipment and the furnishing of
00:20:12instructors are there any questions when is it planned to start the actual college training chief at the start of the
00:20:19next semester so you'll have to get your reports in as soon as possible our gentlemen this project is only
00:20:25on trial its success depends upon the instructors and schools you inspectors select what about junior colleges any
00:20:33decision on that decision don't take that clock wall it goes with the place it belongs to the bank no ah they don't need
00:20:43it they got a great big one hanging out over the sidewalk but the president needed for his office put it back
00:20:51you got everything you bet i'm packed for a weekend or a year that's the two weeks you got coming hey what
00:20:57are you trying to do it insult me insult you with money sure you won't be anybody else so why should i be
00:21:02the only one who gets paid thanks wall for one stop around here's enough now look brad i don't need this
00:21:07though i'm going on a vacation for a couple of years anyway well that much won't last you that long
00:21:11well i'm going it would tell me and i'll go along you would like my brother-in-law and besides there's only room for
00:21:17one guy on a sofa jump in help us i almost forgot
00:21:21hey
00:21:37what's the idea they're my baby shoes baby shoes i didn't know you ever married i wasn't i wore these
00:21:43when i was knee high to a tennis kid oh well what are you saving them for i wouldn't make a move without
00:21:47them them are good luck yeah they've been a great help you bet uh-oh hide those shoes walk of course
00:21:53here comes a banker well what's this good afternoon mr reynolds hello mr crandall well it's all yours
00:22:02there's no need to feel embarrassed i understand on the contrary i'm rather delighted with what i have to
00:22:06tell you you would be come in the office
00:22:10today i'm here a sort of an angel flap your wings mr crandall i'm ready for anything the situation has
00:22:19arisen which changes the status of the comet airport from a liability to a potential asset to this
00:22:24community don't tell me there's oil here i suppose you've heard of the caa student training plan if it
00:22:30works out it'll put aviation where it belongs exactly now mr reynolds we have every reason to believe that
00:22:35the western institute of technology has an excellent chance of being selected as a high
00:22:40scholastic standing and every other requisite this uh airport is practically adjacent to the campus
00:22:49are you suggesting that i might be able to but i'm in no position to make a guarantee a bid that's why
00:22:54i'm here the riverdale national bank is ready to finance you to bid for a contract any airman who
00:23:00would refuse a proposition like that doesn't deserve a break you'll drop around to the bank tomorrow
00:23:04we'll go over the details i'll be there when the door's open goodbye and thanks goodbye
00:23:22where are those shoes uh don't worry he didn't get them come on give them to me wait a minute brad
00:23:27they don't go with the place yes they do we are staying but no kidding we're staying
00:23:35somehow them little dogs always come through i guess it's because i was always a good baby
00:23:52well what happened he was very enthusiastic brad's the man for it all right does western
00:24:08tech meet the caa requirements oh in every way from now on it's up to you everything depends on
00:24:13the bid brad submits don't worry we'll sharpen our pencils on that does he have any idea i'm making
00:24:17this survey mount the sliders good the addition of aviation to our curriculum western tech is
00:24:30fortunate in having a caa appoint a man who has spent most of his life in the air a man who is more
00:24:36qualified than any other to conduct the course bradford reynolds
00:24:44i uh i feel somewhat like i did when i first solo so uh if my speech doesn't exactly follow the
00:24:50rules of elocution i hope you won't ground me because this is my first take off as a school teacher
00:24:55but in flying there's really nothing to be nervous about
00:24:58airplanes have been developed to almost a mechanical perfection
00:25:02the success of a flight today depends upon the man at the controls
00:25:07now i'm here to teach you to fly but more important to teach you to fly saintly
00:25:13however the most difficult part in your learning to fly as far as this course is concerned is passing
00:25:17the caa requirements first it'll be necessary to secure the consent of your parents a legal guardian
00:25:23then stand a rigid physical examination and last and i hope this doesn't stop too many of you
00:25:29an average grade of b and other subjects b what do you have to be a genius can einstein fly
00:25:35they'll let me out i got one b the shark would floor me
00:25:43any questions how do you get b can't you make it a c does that include greek
00:25:47all right now quiet now fellas quiet seriously fellas any questions mr reynolds if i make the grade
00:25:54and dick consent is it okay if you get consent

00:30:28pictures chicago all right number four this procedure is essential in determining a student
00:30:34sense of balance in flight it's the primary test and coordination here's what it means dean to be
00:30:39a flyer guys gotta have equal equal or you know balance anyway we gotta find out these guys know
00:30:45any difference between up and down i see this is a test of the vestibular system you took the words

00:36:13her i'll be right over
00:36:20can you imagine that professor latham wants me over to his house for a seminar and i got to go right
00:36:25away well have a black towel on me mr reynolds take care of the check in good thing skip isn't

00:36:38you should be going to school not teaching oh i feel awful in those freshman caps now look miss rogers
00:36:43just what have you against flying nothing i just don't think it's for boys as young as skip it's a man's job
00:36:49a young man's job you know it prepares them for a great future in the coming industry it also prepares
00:36:56them for other things to come believe me mr reynolds i do feel bad about depriving skip of doing something
00:37:02he has his heart set on but i feel sure i'm right maybe we can compromise compromise why not let skip
00:37:10take a ground course i can use a bright young fellow like him around the airport you understand boys pretty
00:37:15well don't you understand anyone who wants to fly i know you're doing this for skip i think you're
00:37:21swell then i can tell him just as long as he doesn't fly i promise you that all right will that be all
00:37:27folks um two more black cows with floaters
00:37:31well as after i gain an altitude of 200 feet i level off an important maneuver in flying is the vertical bank
00:37:52after tilting beyond a 45 degree angle the controls are reversed
00:38:01and now access the elevators and the elevators at the rudder the vertical bank is the quickest method
00:38:13of reversing your direction of flight how do you like that large figure system i rigged at him
00:38:24last week i diagrammed on the blackboard how to recover from a stall
00:38:28i'm deliberately putting the ship into one now to illustrate
00:38:41holding the plane at this angle i now shut off the motor
00:39:06by losing speed i also lose control of the ship
00:39:11now i'd be in real trouble if i didn't have altitude
00:39:24but gaining normal flying speed gives me control of the ship again
00:39:35oh it's going to crash
00:39:41it was that close he was going to pull out of there
00:39:51if walt will get off the field i'll come in for a landing
00:39:55ah there's no wind drive coming the other way
00:40:11i hope i haven't given you too much to remember
00:40:39oh that was well mr but when do we start flying
00:40:43i know how anxious all of you are now that the preliminary work is finished you're almost ready
00:40:47to try your wings hey skip
00:40:51there they are i hope you might like these fellas
00:40:53you'll notice they're only half wings after you've made your first successful solo flight
00:40:57you'll get you'll get you'll get the other half
00:40:59there you are richard oh thank you
00:41:12the other half you can do it

00:41:15you'll get the other half i'll come in for a second
00:41:16let's hear the little babe
00:41:17so
00:41:19i think i'll come in for you
00:41:19i think you're right
00:41:21to go
00:41:22here
00:41:22so
00:41:23you'll get it
00:41:53Follow instructions.
00:42:23Well, what do you say?
00:42:37You're not doing as well as you think you are, Howell.
00:42:39No? What's wrong?
00:42:41I see your hand.
00:42:41Looks like you've been squeezing a hot poker.
00:42:46I was just gripping the stick.
00:42:47Yeah, but you're making a tough job of it. Relax.
00:42:49You're not handling a crowbar. It only takes two fingers to handle that stick.
00:42:52I got the feel of it.
00:42:54I hope so.
00:42:56You know, we start soloing Monday.
00:42:57I'll be ready.
00:42:59Hiya, Tommy. How'd it go today?
00:43:00I say, just a breeze. I'll be soloing Monday.
00:43:04Yeah, let's go out.
00:43:20Nice going, Gronhag.
00:43:22Listen, Walt.
00:43:22That motor was 50 revs short when I warmed it up.
00:43:25And it still sounds ragged.
00:43:26We better stay and reset those plug points.
00:43:27But I got a date tonight.
00:43:29Why, Walt, any young lady who wouldn't wait for Romeo like you
00:43:32doesn't deserve the pleasure of your company.
00:43:34Thanks, Skip.
00:43:35But it ain't no lady.
00:43:36I'm going to night school.
00:43:37Hey, that's great.
00:43:38What are you taking, aerodynamics?
00:43:40Nope. It's funny.
00:43:44Brad.
00:43:45Well, as chairman of the Entertainment Committee,
00:43:47I've compiled a list for your consideration.
00:43:49City Opera Company, Common.
00:43:51Well, I've seen that six or seven times.
00:43:54As a concert at the Bowl,
00:43:56Panini's very good.
00:43:57Doing what?
00:43:58I don't know.
00:44:00How about the planetarium?
00:44:02I don't like the moon.
00:44:04Through a telescope.
00:44:06Well, that's all.
00:44:07Unless you'd like to go to an odd exhibit at Alston's.
00:44:11For an aviator,
00:44:12you certainly pick the most exciting entertainment.
00:44:15Would you mind if I make a suggestion?
00:44:16Would be a pleasure.
00:44:17All right.
00:44:18Take the first turn to the right.
00:44:19Step on the gas.
00:44:20How much more do you weigh than your button, Adley?
00:44:28Why don't you keep quiet?
00:44:29Oh, boy.
00:44:34Keep on it.
00:44:36All the time, bud.
00:44:37All the time, boy.
00:44:38Come on, there.
00:44:38Hit that out there.
00:44:39Oh, boy.
00:44:40That's a beauty.
00:44:44Of all the fluke hits.
00:44:48Did you hear that?
00:44:49A clean single over second base,
00:44:50and he calls it a fluke.
00:44:51Well, he's rooting for the business.
00:44:53Oh.
00:44:53Can you imagine that meathead tossing him a fat one?
00:44:58Here we go.
00:44:59Come on, boy.
00:45:01Let's go up now.
00:45:04Oh, Satchel Foots.
00:45:05He couldn't hit my grandmother.
00:45:07Maybe not, but that picture feeds my fast one lookout.
00:45:09No fooling.
00:45:11Come on, fella.
00:45:11Give it a long ride.
00:45:12You can do it.
00:45:13You've done it before.
00:45:14Come on.
00:45:14Knock that cover right off the ball.
00:45:16All right.
00:45:16All right.
00:45:18There it goes.
00:45:19It's there in the ball game.
00:45:21The grandmother wasn't pitching.
00:45:24Can you beat it?
00:45:25A double from that guy who's only hitting 240.
00:45:28I'm sorry, but Mr. Satchel Foots' batting average is 246.
00:45:31Come on, Brad.
00:45:34You know who that is?
00:45:35No.
00:45:36Who?
00:45:36Mr. Rogers' daughter.
00:45:38You don't say.
00:45:41Never heard of him.
00:45:44What time do you finish classes tomorrow?
00:45:46Two o'clock?
00:45:47Why?
00:45:48There's something I want to prove to you.
00:45:50Rough line?
00:45:51Yes, that it is a young man's job.
00:45:52Brad, let's not go.
00:45:53This isn't a plea for Skip.
00:45:54He's happy in what he's doing, but I'd like you to see the others.
00:45:57A few weeks ago, they didn't know that nose from the tail.
00:46:00Tomorrow, they fly alone, and I'd like you to see them.
00:46:02You're proud of them, aren't you?
00:46:04Someday, you'll be too, Ann.
00:46:07All right, Brad.
00:46:07I'll be there.
00:46:08Listen to that motor, Ann.
00:46:24If I reset those bells, it purrs like a kitten.
00:46:26Boy, he flies it like a veteran.
00:46:41That bank wasn't anything to cheer about.
00:46:43Did you notice that skid?
00:46:44You show us how it should be done, Hal.
00:46:46You're up next.
00:46:47It's just like pushing an empty baby carriage, Tommy.
00:46:51Sure, sure it is.
00:46:52Anybody can do it.
00:46:53Then you shoot, Hal.
00:47:03You're next.
00:47:04You're right back.
00:47:13Stuff these in your pocket, kid.
00:47:14They'll never miss.
00:47:15I won't need a note.
00:47:17But if it'll make you any happier, okay.
00:47:19I remember when you were up there.
00:47:21It don't mean a thing if you don't pull this thing.
00:47:23How was that, Mr. Reynolds?
00:47:30There's still room for improvement.
00:47:32Yes, sir.
00:47:34Just a minute.
00:47:36There's something you've earned, Richards.
00:47:39Oh, thank you, sir.
00:47:42Well, now I'm going up alone, Hal.
00:47:44You'll the ship slide, and you'll find it'll climb faster.
00:47:46Hold your altitude at 500, circle the field, and come in.
00:47:48Yes, sir.
00:47:49I'll take those shoes.
00:47:50There's no superstition in flying, Howell.
00:47:54You fly with your head and hands guided by common sense.
00:47:56You don't need any good luck charms.
00:47:58I just took them to please Walt.
00:47:59Swing around.
00:48:00It's all yours.
00:48:00That's what you call a Chinese takeoff, one wing low.
00:48:19Is that part of the training?
00:48:42Well, uh, I thought so.
00:48:45So, let's go.
00:49:15Boy, that's a tough landing, dear.
00:49:26And how.
00:49:36Pretty lucky there, boy.
00:49:37What happened, Hal?
00:49:38Did anything go wrong?
00:49:39I'd like the way I cleared that truck.
00:49:41Missed it by two feet.
00:49:42Too bad you guys didn't have a camera on that one.
00:49:47That's all, Hal.
00:49:47Be in my office at 5 o'clock.
00:49:49Yes, sir.
00:49:52Is Tommy trying to make us believe he did that on purpose?
00:49:55Gipion won't put up the ship.
00:49:56Yes, sir.
00:49:59Well, that's your proof that flying is for boys.
00:50:02Tom is not a very good example.
00:50:03He wasn't flying according to instructions.
00:50:05That's just my point, Brad.
00:50:06You can't always depend on boys to follow instructions.
00:50:08To be flies, they have to.
00:50:10They won't.
00:50:11I've been teaching boys now, I know.
00:50:13Teaching flying is a lot different from teaching sociology.
00:50:16Boys are the same no matter what you're teaching them.
00:50:19Look, Ann.
00:50:20I'll show these boys how to fly,
00:50:22and you tell them how to make friends and influence people.
00:50:25Well, that wouldn't hurt you either.
00:50:26You're not as good a pilot as you think you are, Hal.
00:50:54Well, Mr. Reynolds...
00:50:56Wait a minute.
00:50:57You're what we call a lobby pilot.
00:50:58You do a lot of tall talking but very bad flying,
00:51:00and your grade shows it.
00:51:01Well, here's how I feel about it.
00:51:03It isn't how you feel about it.
00:51:04It's how the fellas feel about the record of the class.
00:51:08Did you...
00:51:09Did you think you were being smart out there today?
00:51:11No, Mr. Reynolds.
00:51:13I was dumb.
00:51:17I've been thinking it over, and...
00:51:18I better give up the course.
00:51:22Now, if you want to quit, that's up to you.
00:51:24I do want to quit, but I want to explain.
00:51:27It's something I can tell you that I can't tell my brother.
00:51:32I don't understand.
00:51:34Well, the truth is, Mr. Reynolds,
00:51:36I knew from the start I could never be a flyer,
00:51:39but I've been afraid to tell Jim.
00:51:41I thought I could bluff my way through.
00:51:43That was just a cover-up.
00:51:45I wasn't brave today.
00:51:47I was scared.
00:51:49I know it, Tommy.
00:51:52Sit down.
00:51:53Why didn't you tell me this before?
00:51:58Well, I didn't want to let Jim down.
00:52:00He's been planning on my being a flyer ever since I was a kid.
00:52:05Thought I could make myself like it.
00:52:07I guess I can't.
00:52:08But you can tell me.
00:52:12Listen, I have a confession to make.
00:52:13While I was learning, I was scared to death, too.
00:52:15Wanted to quit, had my mind made up,
00:52:17when suddenly I got the knack of it.
00:52:19And I laughed at myself, ever being afraid.
00:52:21I tried.
00:52:22You've given me over ten hours.
00:52:23That's nothing.
00:52:24I had over thirty.
00:52:25Why, I was so slow, the boys used to call me snail head.
00:52:29But don't you tell anybody.
00:52:30Gosh, I didn't know anybody could be as dumb as I'd been.
00:52:34Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Reynolds.
00:52:36I didn't mean that.
00:52:36That's all right.
00:52:37Forget it.
00:52:38Now, look.
00:52:38I got an idea.
00:52:40Are you willing to give this flying a fair chance?
00:52:42Sure, Mr. Reynolds, if you think.
00:52:43Well, now, this is strictly between us two.
00:52:45We'll meet at five o'clock tomorrow morning.
00:52:47And with no one around, we'll give flying its chance.
00:52:50What do you say, son?
00:52:51You're a swell guy, snail head.
00:53:01How do you feel, fella?
00:53:02Just like the early bird.
00:53:04Good.
00:53:04Here we go.
00:53:13Hey, Brad, do you spell mug with one G or two?
00:53:30It's something you drink out of, it's one G.
00:53:32But if it's to your brother-in-law, it's two Gs.
00:53:34Thanks.
00:53:37Sorry, how did you know who I was writing to?
00:53:39Well, he's the only one who can read your writing.
00:53:43Are you busy?
00:53:47Yes.
00:53:48Well, what I want to see, if that'll only take a minute.
00:54:03What can I do for you, Inspector?
00:54:05Just making a routine check of your equipment.
00:54:07How was it?
00:54:08All right.
00:54:09Then what do you want to see me about?
00:54:11Chief Grant just sent me this grade sheet from Washington.
00:54:14Seems like one of the students isn't getting along so well.
00:54:20That's the grade he deserved.
00:54:22You know he's my brother.
00:54:23Sure I do.
00:54:24What about it?
00:54:25I just left him.
00:54:28What did he tell you?
00:54:29Nothing.
00:54:30But you wouldn't be taking your grudge against me out on the kid, would you?
00:54:35What if I am?
00:54:36I'm running the school, and it's up to me to give him any grade I want to.
00:54:39Your minute's up, Howell.
00:54:40I think I have a couple of seconds left.
00:54:41What's the matter, Mr. Reynolds?
00:54:52Oh, nothing.
00:54:55Just demonstrating what to do when a student freezes on the controls.
00:54:59Yeah, and if the extinguisher fails to knock him loose, you turn and clamp a half-nelson on him like this.
00:55:09Now, on the extreme cases, when it's either you or the student, you pull the ripcord of his chute like this.
00:55:16Grab him firmly about the ripcord.
00:55:17Put him into a flying man and heave him over the side.
00:55:21You fellas want to see me about something?
00:55:23Yes, sir, but if you're busy, I...
00:55:25Oh, that's all right.
00:55:26I can see him any time.
00:55:28Mr. Reynolds, we were just arguing the relative barracks of the biplane and the monoplane.
00:55:32Glassman here maintains that the cantilever-type monoplane has a distinct advantage, but I'm inclined to disagree with him.
00:55:37My theory is that the entire lifting surface being above the center of gravity is the important factor in the plane's stability.
00:55:43Yes, sir.
00:55:45Just a minute, fellas.

00:55:50Good night.
00:55:50Good night.
00:55:50Good night.
00:56:03Mr. Reynolds?
00:56:06What did he say?
00:56:06Oh, uh, we had a nice, friendly chat.
00:56:10Did you tell him it was going to be all right?
00:56:12Well, no, but, uh, we're going to show him, aren't we, Tommy?
00:56:15You bet we will.
00:56:16See you tomorrow.
00:56:16At the crack of dawn.
00:56:34That was great for me, Tommy.
00:56:35How did it feel to you?
00:56:36I could do those all day.
00:56:42Now we'll try something else.
00:56:43Good night.
00:56:53I'll try something else.
00:56:56I'll try something else.
00:57:01Come on.
00:57:05I'll do it.
00:57:05I'll try something else.

01:00:14Motor went dead. I've got to get back to the Comet Airport. Will you take me?
01:00:17Sure. Hop in.
01:00:18He's not at the gym and Tommy's not in his room.
01:00:25That's it. Air bandits. Call the gym and...
01:00:27Well, maybe Mr. Reynolds took Tommy up.
01:00:29Go on.
01:00:30He don't do no private tootin' no more.
01:00:32There you are. Thank you.
01:00:44Oh, thank you.
01:00:44Didn't you take out the stearman?
01:00:46Yes.
01:00:46Where is it?
01:00:47Is this ship all gas and oil?
01:00:48Yes, sir.
01:00:49Is there anything wrong, Mr. Reynolds?
01:00:51I had Tommy up. Oil line broke over the mountain. Motor pro ship went into a spin and Tommy bailed out.
01:00:56Where is he?
01:00:57Last I saw, he was drifting toward a canyon. I'm going out to find him.
01:01:00Get on the prop, Walt.
01:01:05I won't be long, so keep your mouth shut.
01:01:07You know how dumb I can be.
01:01:09Switch off.

01:06:26I think I saw him.
01:06:30Hey, there he is.
01:06:43Hey, it looks like he's hurt.
01:06:51We better go for help.
01:06:53Better have to pack in and take a week.
01:06:55We got to fly him out.
01:06:57Hey, there's a spot.
01:07:10Hey, there's a spot.
01:07:12Hang on.
01:07:17Hey, you think you can make it?
01:07:31You think you can make it?
01:07:40You think you can make it?
01:07:41We got to.
01:08:13Tommy! Tommy! I'll get something and pull him in.
01:08:32No, it'll tear loose and he'll fall. You stay here on the ledge and I'll climb up and swing him into you.
01:08:38Tommy! Tommy, it's Skip! Tommy! Tommy, it's Skip!
01:08:43Nothing to worry about, Miss Rogers. Skip ain't flying the ship. He just went along for the ride.
01:09:14You ready? Yeah. We've got a good foothold.
01:09:19Okay.
01:09:31Do it like that again.
01:09:33All right, this is the one.
01:09:34I got him!
01:09:53Tommy, where are you hurt?
01:09:55I'll be all right, Skip.
01:10:05Brad!
01:10:08What happened?
01:10:10You heard much, Tommy?
01:10:12I guess I got a few bumps on the way down.
01:10:15Skip, my legs, I... I can't move them.
01:10:24Your legs?
01:10:26Don't try. Just lie still. I'll go for help.
01:10:30No, stay here, Skip. They'll find us.
01:10:32Well, maybe you'd better take your jacket off.
01:10:38You'd be a little more comfortable to be back at home.
01:10:41Yes, sir.
01:10:41But what happened to young Howell?
01:10:43You see, he had a bailout.
01:10:47Bailout?
01:10:48Yes, ma'am.
01:10:50The motor went dead and the deer was going to crash.
01:10:53But I don't understand. Reynolds came back.
01:10:55Yeah, he came back in the car with a farmer.
01:10:56But where did he leave Howell?
01:10:58Brad said the last time he'd seen him,
01:11:00the kid was going down on a canyon.
01:11:05Get Mr. James Howell at Pacific Airport.
01:11:07If he isn't there, have them locate him immediately.
01:11:09But why did Mr. Reynolds take Skip with him?
01:11:11Skip said he was going along to help find Tommy.
01:11:13Couldn't hold him back.
01:11:14But where are they?
01:11:16That's what I want to know.
01:11:17They must be down somewheres.
01:11:19They didn't have enough gas to last this long.
01:11:22Yes?
01:11:24Hello, Mr. Howell. Dean Norris.
01:11:25You'd better get over here as soon as you can.
01:11:27There's been a serious airplane accident.
01:11:30We don't know it yet.
01:11:32Reynolds and two of the students are missing.
01:11:35Yes, yes, I'm notifying the air patrol
01:11:37and the Jacinto Forest Ranger stations
01:11:39to start the search at once.
01:11:44Hello, boy, Skip.
01:11:44See any planes?
01:11:45No, but they'll be along all right.
01:11:48It's getting kind of chilly up here.
01:11:50Sure you're warm enough?
01:11:51Yeah, thanks.
01:11:53How you doing, Tommy?
01:11:53I'm warm enough.
01:11:56My side and shoulder ache pretty bad.
01:11:59Here you are, fella.
01:12:03That better?
01:12:08Brad, if I get you into the ship,
01:12:11could you fly it out?
01:12:14My legs.
01:12:15I couldn't handle the runoff.
01:12:16Well, I'm going up on the cliff again.
01:12:20Take a look around.
01:12:21I'll be back before dark.
01:12:25Keep your chin up, kid.
01:12:28We haven't heard a word, Chief.
01:12:29The air patrol is still out
01:12:30and searching parties are covering the mountains.
01:12:33I think you'd better come down here, Mr. Grant.
01:12:36Oh, good.
01:12:36We'll see you here in the morning.
01:12:38You can't just hear from morning?
01:12:39No.
01:13:02Better try and get some sleep, Skip.
01:13:04They'll find us in the morning.
01:13:05Well, I'll be all right.
01:13:07I've got to keep watch for him.
01:13:24Any luck, Skip?
01:13:26No.
01:13:26I heard a couple of planes,
01:13:28but they don't get over this far.
01:13:30Look, Brad.
01:13:31We're not going to find us in this hole,
01:13:33and if we stay here another night,
01:13:34we'll freeze to death.
01:13:36Well, this is one for the logbook, all right.
01:13:39After cutting capers in the sky buggy for years
01:13:41without a scratch,
01:13:42I have to pancake out of a tree
01:13:43to put myself on the Hummel.
01:13:46Look.
01:13:48We can't just sit here and let Tommy die.
01:13:51I'll fly that ship out.
01:13:53You'd never make it.
01:13:54You'd crack up.
01:13:54Well, suppose we do.
01:13:56It's better than waiting here for you two to die.
01:13:59Why don't you start walking, Skip?
01:14:01At least you...
01:14:01No.
01:14:02Look, Brad.
01:14:03I've got an idea.
01:14:05Suppose I put you and Tommy in the front cockpit,
01:14:08and I get it to control,
01:14:09and you tell me what to do,
01:14:11and I'll do it.
01:14:12Don't you see, Brad?
01:14:13It'll be you flying the ship on me.
01:14:16Only I'll be at the controls,
01:14:17and you'll be using my hands and feet.
01:14:19That's all.
01:14:20No, that's useless, Skip.
01:14:21I'd have to have a lot of luck
01:14:22to fly that ship out myself.
01:14:25Maybe we'll have that luck.
01:14:31All right, get Tommy in the ship.
01:14:36Tommy.
01:14:37Come on, fella.
01:14:38We're leaving.
01:14:39Come on.
01:14:39Come on.
01:14:40You sure the motor's warmed up well?
01:15:03That's a 40 centimeter.
01:15:05Good.
01:15:05Hey, Skip.
01:15:09Listen, camper.
01:15:10This is a tough spot to get out of.
01:15:14On the takeoff,
01:15:15you're to stare straight for the white streak
01:15:17in the face of that cliff.
01:15:21As soon as the ship leaves the ground,
01:15:24hold it down,
01:15:25and don't start climbing
01:15:26till you get the signal from me.
01:15:29I'll give it to you with my hands.
01:15:31Like this.
01:15:33Okay, Brad.
01:15:34Here we go.
01:15:41Here we go.
01:16:02Here we go.
01:16:02You better look at your wheel.
01:16:29You better look at your wheel.
01:16:29It's still winter.
01:16:41He's burning like a kid.
01:16:45Come on, you're on the inside.
01:16:46Give us the dope.
01:16:47I told her I don't know nothing.
01:16:49Dorgan, what about the beef
01:16:50between Howell and Reynolds?
01:16:51Give us the low gown.
01:16:52Now, don't say I told her,
01:17:00but here's how it all started.
01:17:02Howell's been sore, Brad,
01:17:03ever since Brad beat him.
01:17:04Been what?
01:17:05Flying?
01:17:05A woman?
01:17:06No.
01:17:07Marbles!
01:17:09Come on, wise guy.
01:17:10What about the doll?
01:17:11What doll?
01:17:11Don't bother me.
01:17:13There's Inspector Howell.
01:17:17Any news, Mr. Howell?
01:17:18Where are the keys to the hangers?
01:17:19I got them right here.
01:17:20Roll those ships in and lock them up.
01:17:22What are they doing?
01:17:23Closing us up?
01:17:24Sorry, Walt, but that's the way it is.
01:17:31Look, it's Brad.
01:17:32Are you sure it's Brad?
01:17:36Of course.
01:17:37That's a steam and it's a golfing.
01:17:42Look, it's what Flanninger has got.
01:17:56Stand back, everybody.
01:17:57Come on, stand back.
01:17:58Stop it, it's right.
01:17:59Somebody get hurt.
01:18:00Come on, everybody.
01:18:01Stand back.
01:18:01Walk.
01:18:02Keep it from landing.
01:18:25Hang it up.
01:18:31This is Jim Rogers, Walt.
01:18:33Get off the field.
01:18:34I'm trying to land.
01:18:35I've got Brad and Tommy with me.
01:18:36They're badly hurt.
01:18:38Don't end this time, so get out of my way.
01:18:40That's Rogers flying that plane and he doesn't know his wheel is gone.
01:18:42Mr. Noah, it's home for an ambulance.

01:19:10Say on the field.
01:19:11I heard you skip, but your wheels off.
01:19:15Honest.
01:19:20I'm going to land at the other end.
01:19:41Turn it at the rear end.
01:19:42I leave you all my way to go.
01:20:00Thun a little bit less.
01:20:01You can get, Jack.
01:20:03What happened.
01:20:05Our last wheel's gone!
01:20:29What do I do?
01:20:33I'm scared.
01:20:35I'll get every word I say.
01:20:38Come in with a regular glide, but keep your right wing low.
01:20:42At the edge of the field, cut your switch.
01:20:45When the wheel touches the ground, hold your left wing up with the aileron as long as you can.
01:20:52Is that clear?
01:20:53I got it!
01:20:58Do you think he can land that plane, Mr. Hall?
01:21:00It all depends on how good a flyer skip really is.
01:21:02An experienced pilot could land it, all right.
01:21:04Here we go!
01:21:09Here we go!
01:21:09Well done!
01:21:17Well done!

01:22:20Get him to the hospital right away.
01:22:21How do you feel, Tommy?
01:22:22I'm all right.

01:22:30Good luck, Professor.
01:22:31Thanks.
01:22:32Thanks.
