00:00:00The Indian skipper has done a tremendous job to get back there.
00:00:23Ridiculous running with two balls to go!
00:00:27Good evening. Today the third quarterfinal took place between two sides that know what it's like to get to the last four but have never made a World Cup final.
00:00:51Informed South Africa were looking to reach their fourth semi-final.
00:00:57For New Zealand it was a chance to make it for a sixth time.
00:01:03England are up tomorrow. We'll preview their game against Sri Lanka.
00:01:07Sri Lanka are a good side with a lot of attacking options both with bat and ball and they're obviously on their home patch.
00:01:14So it's going to be a significant challenge for us.
00:01:17We know how tough they can be. They've got good balance so we're expecting nothing less than the best from them tomorrow.
00:01:27We'll also go behind the scenes at the Primadasa Stadium and get the inside track from Ian Ward.
00:01:32With me in the studio tonight are Nick Knight and Marvin Atapattu.
00:01:38Plenty from them later in the show.
00:01:40Right, let's get straight to the action.
00:01:42The game today was the second quarterfinal to be played at the Shear Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.
00:01:48On Wednesday the West Indies only managed to post 112 and were knocked out by Pakistan who reached the target without losing a wicket.
00:01:56So how about the form of South Africa and New Zealand?
00:01:59Well the pro tiers had been one of the teams of the tournament so far.
00:02:03Their only loss was to England in that amazing game in Chennai.
00:02:07Graham Smith's side would have been full of confidence coming off victories over India, Ireland and Bangladesh in the final group stages.
00:02:16New Zealand's form had been a little more up and down.
00:02:19There was that exceptional Ross Taylor inspired victory against Pakistan in Pala Kele but they had also suffered heavy defeats to Australia and Sri Lanka.
00:02:28The good news for the Black Caps was that Daniel Vittori had recovered from a knee injury and he also won the toss and decided to bat.
00:02:36Luke Woodcock was the other man who came in to the side. James Franklin and the injured Hamish Bennett made way.
00:02:43South Africa were at full strength and made three changes to the side that beat Bangladesh at the same venue last Saturday.
00:02:50In came A.B. de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Mornimorkel. Out went Mornimor van Weyck, Wayne Parnell and Onwabo Sotsorby.
00:02:59Here we go first ball, Gutton on strike.
00:03:06Two men on the boundary for the moment.
00:03:13Only got one out, so South Africa straight away attacking under the helmet on slip.
00:03:18A slip, and a man of the helmet on the leg side, and just one man deep at mid-wicket.
00:03:26The key to watch here is whether there's any spin with the new ball,
00:03:30because that'll tell you what it's going to be like later on.
00:03:33Normally, it'll just skid on, slide on, give it a bit of air.
00:03:37It might just grip, and if it does grip and turn a little bit,
00:03:40that'll be wonderful news for all the spinners, certainly Johan Boota and Tahir.
00:03:45Imran Tahir will be rubbing his hands to get a hand on the ball.
00:03:51Ow!
00:03:53That's a good coming home, because Martin Ductill has struggled to get a spin.
00:03:59Doesn't play it well, hasn't played it well in the past.
00:04:03One of the keys, he's going to have to rotate the strike, look for his single.
00:04:10He's off the mark now.
00:04:14And South Africa, of course, opening up with Robin Peterson and Dale Steyn.
00:04:24Wonderful fast bowler.
00:04:26Dale Steyn.
00:04:36They're reaching just 27, economy rate 5.13, which is too bad in this day and age.
00:04:46First ball, is there any swing around? No, there's not.
00:04:48Through the covers, it's not perfectly timed, there'll just be a couple.
00:04:51They might come back for three, and they will. Good running.
00:04:57Well, it was predicted. It's a very big field. The one side is certainly massive. 90 metres, I would think.
00:05:07Maybe running to the arm, the throw.
00:05:10Dale Steyn is, as you said, just getting it up there, looking for the swing, not much there.
00:05:13So he might just drag it back a little bit, go back of a length.
00:05:17Very interesting this morning, chatting to him, just watching him warm up and mark his run-up out.
00:05:2218.9 is exactly what he measures.
00:05:29He measures 18.9 and he marks it out and then he puts a little dot.
00:05:35And that little dot, when he runs in, he's got to hit that dot with his left foot.
00:05:41He was telling me the first ball, he just, you know, eases into the runner.
00:05:45But as he warms up, so he starts further back.
00:05:48You being a fast bowler, know all about that.
00:05:50But as he warms up, he'll walk further back and then run in to the dot.
00:05:54You see where he's starting there, now he feels that's more or less where he is when he's warm.
00:05:58So there's a little dot there, that one there.
00:06:00Always hits it with the left foot.
00:06:02Yeah, 18.9, you're talking metres, of course, for those that perhaps aren't sure.
00:06:13And they use tape, they use a long tape now as well, it's very precise.
00:06:17So, in theory, you shouldn't be bowling no balls.
00:06:21Well, McCollum down the wicket, brilliantly taken!
00:06:25Outstanding from Peterson, diving away to his left, one-handed.
00:06:30And McCollum advancing down the wicket, has got a leading edge.
00:06:34And South Africa have got a breakthrough.
00:06:37Well, Peterson's a fantastic feeler of his arm-bowling.
00:06:40And you just have a look at this.
00:06:43A little bit of bounce, and wonderful effort.
00:06:49He's landed just perfectly.
00:06:53This is exactly what they needed.
00:06:55The early breakthrough, and Robin Peterson has done it again.
00:06:59And Brendan McCollum, the dangerous man, leaves the scene.
00:07:03New Zealand now five for one.
00:07:05South Africa have broken through early, and that brings Jesse Ryder to the crease at number three for New Zealand.
00:07:11And it's a full toss. Oh, there's a mix-up.
00:07:27And it crossed.
00:07:33Oh, inside edge, it'll be four, but very lucky for Jesse Ryder.
00:07:49New Zealand will take whatever they can, whichever way right now.
00:07:55We've lost an early wicket, but Dale Steyn getting a little bit of shape.
00:07:59That could so easily have gone inside edge, clattered onto middle stump.
00:08:04Right line, right length, he did everything.
00:08:07Just didn't beat the bat completely.
00:08:08But he's starting to work up a pace here.
00:08:10Dale Steyn starting at his straps, and he's an exciting player to watch.
00:08:14Pulled away by Ryder.
00:08:18Yeah, not perfectly timed. It's out that long boundary.
00:08:21They should get three.
00:08:30Well, I think that Ryder's been sitting on that back foot, waiting for the short delivery.
00:08:35Rushed on him a little bit.
00:08:38Not convinced at all about the shot, that's for sure.
00:08:56Ow!
00:08:57Jeez.
00:08:59That lack of pace is causing Ryder, who's sort of a biffer of the ball.
00:09:03There's no touch, really, to his play.
00:09:07He's a muscle man.
00:09:08It was the quicker delivery, the skidder from Guerta,
00:09:11put him on the crease, nearly got through.
00:09:16Oh, I say!
00:09:18Perfect line from Dale Steyn.
00:09:22Because he can shape the ball back in a Ryder,
00:09:24he has to play at that ball.
00:09:375-2 C.
00:09:42As good a field as you get in the South African set-up.
00:09:46Look at this.
00:09:47That's quite amazing.
00:09:49The time...
00:09:50The time to jump was the key, yeah?
00:09:53Oh!
00:09:54Wonderful.
00:09:55Wonderful.
00:09:56John T. Rhodes would be proud of that.
00:09:57That ought to be caught.
00:10:10It surely will be caught.
00:10:12Very clever from Dale Steyn.
00:10:15Change up, change down.
00:10:16Short and quick, and then the slower ball, and the offer accepted by Gupta.
00:10:21Accepted by Gupta.
00:10:23But badly executed.
00:10:24Two down now.
00:10:32Yep.
00:10:33Slow-off spinner.
00:10:35On the drive, the hand came off the bat.
00:10:37That's how badly it beat him for the pace.
00:10:40And it looks easy in the end, but I tell you what,
00:10:42when it's up there, your heart's in your mouth right now.
00:10:45Nice and calm behind Gupta.
00:10:48So, a big wicket, Martin Guttel goes.
00:10:50That's the second one.
00:10:51New Zealand 16 for two.
00:10:56Ross Taylor is out of the middle,
00:10:58because South Africa have made an almost perfect start
00:11:00to this third quarter-final here in Dhaka.
00:11:03Two New Zealand wickets down, just 16 on the board.
00:11:07That was a terrific stroke.
00:11:16If you give Ryder anything out there, he'll throw the lot at it.
00:11:22Two full from Moneimoku.
00:11:24Got to drag it back a little bit.
00:11:28Head-balled one down the leg side.
00:11:30Trying to correct it, over-correct it.
00:11:32Two full and just outside the old stuff there.
00:11:35Oh, he gives it a thrash, doesn't he, this fellow.
00:11:45Joshy Ryder won't be dictated to.
00:11:52Well, it's not as quick an outfield as it's been
00:11:54because of the rain last night.
00:11:57So, Hashim Ambler's long sprint is worth the money.
00:12:06Gee, he went a long way.
00:12:07I think he's probably gone 30 to 40 yards there.
00:12:13Another example of the will that these South Africans have.
00:12:15You'll see that in the field from New Zealand as well.
00:12:20I think he's all right.
00:12:21I think the knee hits the boundary foam after he's flicked the ball back.
00:12:27It's 34 for two.
00:12:28Another lovely control hit from the big man.
00:12:44Joshy Ryder's shot along now to 29.
00:12:46Well, he almost creates his own width.
00:12:51Often say it, he doesn't have a lot of foot movement
00:12:56either towards the line of the ball.
00:12:58Look at that.
00:12:59There's lovely hands through the ball though.
00:13:01He's just so quick and he's so controlled
00:13:03with a minimum of fuss.
00:13:05And again.
00:13:15That's the shortest boundary and by some margin.
00:13:1947 for two.
00:13:2047 for two.
00:13:27Well bowled.
00:13:28Very well bowled.
00:13:32So impressed with this young man.
00:13:34You know he's played a bit of county cricket.
00:13:36Look at that.
00:13:37There's the Google.
00:13:38You know he's good at bowling the Google.
00:13:39Loves to bowl it a lot.
00:13:40And why wouldn't you in these conditions?
00:13:42And Ryder.
00:13:43Nothing about that one.
00:13:45Oh, and this kept a little low.
00:13:46The next delivery.
00:13:49Well, well, well.
00:13:54Even in the short time that Ryder and Taylor have been together
00:13:59that this is just so crucial from New Zealand's perspective
00:14:03to try and put any sort of pressure on the South Africans
00:14:06in this quarter final.
00:14:12Leading edge.
00:14:15Survives as Ross Taylor.
00:14:1615 gone.
00:14:17It's 57 for two.
00:14:23Oh, well stopped.
00:14:24That was well struck and well stopped by JP Dumini.
00:14:27Yeah, that would hurt the hands.
00:14:29That might have sped away for four.
00:14:31Even though there's a sweeper.
00:14:37One of those areas.
00:14:38For Ryder that it is but look at Dumini.
00:14:40JP Dumini.
00:14:41JP Dumini.
00:14:43Now the excited crowds and brought the game alive in Australia
00:14:48a few seasons ago with some of the stunning outfield catches.
00:14:52And he's brilliant here again today.
00:14:5558 for two.
00:15:0158 for two.
00:15:11Oh, get another run.
00:15:16The question is, was that entirely necessary?
00:15:18Was there a chance of getting a run out?
00:15:20No, there wasn't.
00:15:24No, there wasn't.
00:15:32Duplicy!
00:15:33Oh, I feel it.
00:15:34Good hand.
00:15:35Good hand to it.
00:15:36May well have been a few more than one had it gone past.
00:15:4061 for two.
00:15:4161 for two.
00:15:48He's given in with.
00:15:49He'll only get a couple.
00:15:51Because of the sweeper down there offside.
00:15:55He absolutely loves it outside that off stump.
00:15:57Jesse Ryder actually just throws the bat at it.
00:16:01And Mornay Morkle from the start has been trying to work out a line
00:16:05that's going to restrict Jesse Ryder.
00:16:08When he goes wide like that, then it's there for the taking
00:16:11and it holds absolutely nothing back.
00:16:14Helped on its way.
00:16:26Four runs to Jesse Ryder and the 50 partnership up.
00:16:31Much needed.
00:16:37Yeah, just helping it around, and this partnership ideally
00:16:40as a batting unit you want to see this grow to triple figures
00:16:43if you're the coach, the captain sitting in the dressing room.
00:16:48Just fell that today, Mornay Morkle is under a bit more pressure
00:16:50because of the nature of the surface.
00:16:52A little cutter it looked like.
00:16:53Hadn't got the line all wrong.
00:16:58Down.
00:17:00Very good shot from Ross Taylor.
00:17:07That was a lovely offside shot.
00:17:09Just beautifully played.
00:17:12There's a little bit of width here, but he's able to get to the pitch of the ball.
00:17:17It's overpitched from Johan Botta.
00:17:20And he puts it away beautifully, finds the gap, and it's all along the ground
00:17:25through that offside for four.
00:17:26Set that offside for four.
00:17:35Well run as well.
00:17:36Good communication between the two, Ryder and Taylor.
00:17:40And set off straight away.
00:17:41He's got fifty.
00:17:57Fifty well-played runs.
00:17:59Jesse Ryder, fifth Wanda International, fifth year, and New Zealand needed him to get runs here.
00:18:08After losing two early wickets, and he's done just that.
00:18:11Lots of work still to be done.
00:18:14As he gets applause from his Shere Bungler crowd.
00:18:17Half the job done here for Jesse Ryder.
00:18:24New Zealand side no full well.
00:18:28Fifties and sixties don't win you matches.
00:18:31Good hundreds, good hundreds.
00:18:37Up in the air, catches the call, it's not going to go to anybody.
00:18:40Land safely.
00:18:43Ryder survives.
00:18:44It's 84 for two.
00:18:53That's a chance.
00:18:54Is it in the outfield?
00:18:55No, he's found the gap.
00:18:57It's the chip from Jesse Ryder.
00:19:03Good delivery from J.P. Dermany.
00:19:05Just a little flight.
00:19:07For the second I thought he bowled it from further back in the crease.
00:19:10Ryder trying to give himself room.
00:19:11So this is the start of him starting to think, hang on a second.
00:19:15I've got to try and make the play here.
00:19:18And the minute he does that, up she goes.
00:19:20A little half chance.
00:19:22A little flutter.
00:19:23Halfway through the innings it's 92 for two.
00:19:33A reminder right down the bottom of the screen there, the winner of today's quarter-final will play either Sri Lanka or England in the semi-final in Colombo.
00:19:45That's on Tuesday the 29th.
00:19:50Really good and enthusiastic crowd in here.
00:19:53In fact the ground's close to full now.
00:19:55It's not as noisy as it would be if Bangladesh or Pakistan were playing.
00:20:04But it's certainly involved as Jesse Ryder drills one through widish mid-off.
00:20:12Thousand runs in one day cricket for him.
00:20:14It sure helps when the ball comes onto the bat like that.
00:20:16That's the big difference.
00:20:17Very hard service to manoeuvre the ball if it comes at you slowly.
00:20:26When it comes at you quick you've got a chance.
00:20:29Well, this has woken the crowd up.
00:20:31And if you're sitting in your lounge you're probably thinking okay boundary.
00:20:35Now, that's off the first ball.
00:20:38Is this the start of New Zealand recognising they need you up the rate?
00:20:42Just maybe.
00:20:44The time's got to hang in there now.
00:20:48The difficult thing to work out is that South Africa fielded particularly well.
00:20:53As you've said on a few occasions.
00:20:55And they've really bowled very tidily.
00:20:57There's no what I would call rank bad balls.
00:21:01And therefore New Zealand have had very little to work with.
00:21:04They've had to wait to pounce on an opportunity in the way that Ryder just did.
00:21:08I still think that this pair, who are probably the most dangerous,
00:21:13I still think they're going about it the right way out.
00:21:16There should be a couple there.
00:21:32There's a huge gap between quite a fine long leg fielder and quite a square.
00:21:37Square leg on the boundary.
00:21:39That's good batting by Jesse Ryder.
00:21:50You've got to know where your field is.
00:21:55Or you can just chip it over it.
00:21:59This is turning into quite a good innings.
00:22:01It sure is.
00:22:04Brave cricket.
00:22:06First ball down the wicket.
00:22:08Getting to the pitch.
00:22:10Has he hit it hot enough?
00:22:11Go all the way.
00:22:18I think it's just a four.
00:22:20There's a hundred partnership warmly received by the people of Dhaka.
00:22:33It's one one six for two.
00:22:40Look at that, those thick edges on some of these big bats.
00:22:43Those sort of strokes where you might have got caught a few years ago with smaller blades.
00:22:50They're just not happening.
00:22:51These balls are falling in so much more in the modern game into no man's land.
00:22:57And so, look at that.
00:22:58See, another no.
00:22:59That might have just slid out there and Pedersen might have caught that.
00:23:03I'm just thinking too, Mark, two fifties a given.
00:23:07Oh, there's the big wrong-in.
00:23:08Taylor wanted a single.
00:23:09It's not there.
00:23:1131 gone.
00:23:121.18 for two.
00:23:16Here we go.
00:23:18There we go, boy.
00:23:23Go fetch it.
00:23:26We haven't been seeing Taylor or Ryder go over the fence too often.
00:23:32Well, in fact, this is, look, look at Taylor.
00:23:35Oh, first time of it.
00:23:36And he gets it sweet.
00:23:37This is what we see so much of in T20 cricket and we saw in Palakili against Pakistan.
00:23:44Beautiful.
00:23:48It's a bit more of it.
00:23:49I've wondered for some time about batsmen taking their power play just prior to that second.
00:23:57No, just, just even just prior to that change of ball.
00:24:00Making the side use up some couple of overs of their better bowlers.
00:24:06Just when they're drifting along and thinking they're restricting you to one and over.
00:24:10Oh, yeah, look at that for placement.
00:24:11A little bit chip from Ryder.
00:24:12We've seen a few.
00:24:13That's good batting.
00:24:14It's good contest here.
00:24:15Oh, yeah.
00:24:16Oh, yeah.
00:24:17Look at that for placement.
00:24:18A little bit chip from Ryder.
00:24:20We've seen a few.
00:24:21That's good batting.
00:24:22It's good contest here.
00:24:24Oh, yeah.
00:24:25That's good batting.
00:24:26It's good contest here.
00:24:30Oh, yeah.
00:24:31The changes from Imran Tahir who whips through his overs too.
00:24:39He's straight back to his mark and he's ready to bowl.
00:24:42There's no fiddling around.
00:24:43Ross Taylor's trying to slow him down.
00:24:45He's had a wander down the pitch.
00:24:46He's turned his back on him.
00:24:47He's taking guard again.
00:24:48He just wants to have a breather.
00:24:50A little three-second moment.
00:24:52But Tahir won't let it.
00:24:53Oh, now there's an opportunity.
00:24:55They don't drop these, the South Africans.
00:24:57No, no, no.
00:24:58That's Imran Tahir's battle.
00:25:00And he's the victor.
00:25:04So passionate, the Imran Tahir.
00:25:07Means a lot to him.
00:25:09He is so excited to be playing international cricket for South Africa.
00:25:15And it's caught by no other, yeah, Jaak Kalas.
00:25:21Great slip fielder, but he's also equally talented on the fence.
00:25:26Reverse cup.
00:25:27Comfortable as.
00:25:29And look at that.
00:25:30Look at that passion from the bowler.
00:25:32Yeah, he's pumping his chest.
00:25:34Pumping the South African emblem.
00:25:36And Ross Taylor, who got a start, got set, is out for 43.
00:25:40New Zealand find themselves now 130 for three down.
00:25:44Here's Scott Styrus.
00:25:48Here's Scott Styrus.
00:25:4936 in the middle of the year.
00:25:51And a little bit of a swan song for him here.
00:25:55Cricket World Cup for 2011.
00:25:58As we see Morkel back into the attack.
00:26:01And that's what this change of ball has just come on quite nicely for Scott Styrus.
00:26:10Such a good shot.
00:26:13At first sighting, I didn't think it was that close to be punched down the ground.
00:26:17Let's have a look and see again.
00:26:19Hit on the up quite nicely.
00:26:22How do you time this one?
00:26:27Not all of it.
00:26:28And it'll still get there to the fence though.
00:26:31Amla, he'll just have to watch it roll into the rope.
00:26:34Down the ground.
00:26:39And a good shot from Styrus.
00:26:42Nanny Morrison, he looks in a very positive frame of mind.
00:26:48Well, they need him.
00:26:49Yeah, a bit of glove-love there.
00:26:51Punch of the gloves between Ryder and Styrus.
00:26:57Yeah, that steely determination.
00:27:00Styrus, one of his areas.
00:27:02And brave enough to take it on, hit it nice and straight.
00:27:06There it is.
00:27:07He's got the wicket.
00:27:08Mornay Morkel gets Scott Styrus.
00:27:11Looking to give himself room and heave ho over the infield.
00:27:18Not successful, dragged onto the stumps.
00:27:27Applause all around.
00:27:32One risk too many.
00:27:35For Scott Styrus.
00:27:37Graham Smith would have been asking for this.
00:27:41Mornay Morkel has delivered.
00:27:42And out goes Scott Styrus.
00:27:441-5-3 for 4.
00:27:4520-year-old Kane Williamson comes in to partner Jesse Ryder.
00:27:54Up in the air.
00:27:58A long way up in the air.
00:27:59Man under it.
00:28:00Comfortable catch.
00:28:01It's Colin Ingram who's on the field.
00:28:04And again it is Imran Tahir with a huge celebration.
00:28:07Every wicket that he gets he relishes.
00:28:11And he signals also to the change roof.
00:28:12Wickets, wickets, wickets.
00:28:13That's what South Africa want and they're getting them.
00:28:14It's a good one this.
00:28:15The Ryder knows it as well.
00:28:16South Africa good fielding unit.
00:28:18But the platform was set by Ryder and Ross Taylor.
00:28:19Smith has been patient.
00:28:21And now he's starting to pay dividends for him.
00:28:24Ryder goes for 83.
00:28:25It's 156.
00:28:26And he's got a huge celebration.
00:28:27A huge celebration.
00:28:28Every wicket that he gets he relishes.
00:28:29And he signals also to the change roof.
00:28:30Wickets, wickets, wickets.
00:28:31That's what South Africa want and they're getting them.
00:28:32It's a good one this.
00:28:33The Ryder knows it as well.
00:28:36South Africa good fielding unit.
00:28:39But the platform was set by Ryder and Ross Taylor.
00:28:44Smith has been patient.
00:28:46And now he's starting to pay dividends for him.
00:28:49The Ryder goes for 83.
00:28:50It's 156 for five.
00:28:54Batsman cross.
00:28:55And then he's on strike.
00:28:57One more.
00:28:58Nice little sweep.
00:29:02157 for five.
00:29:16In the gap.
00:29:17There's a sweep on the fence on the offside.
00:29:20See this ball again.
00:29:32Across the seam and scrambled.
00:29:36Just today.
00:29:37More than any other time I've seen Morkle recently.
00:29:41And I rate him highly.
00:29:42Everyone knows that.
00:29:43Or should know that by now.
00:29:44But his length has not been as consistent.
00:29:46And know his line.
00:29:47Just a little bit of an off there.
00:29:48And you have those.
00:29:49He's much better.
00:29:53That's where I would have expected to see a lot more from him.
00:29:57Because that's what he's done well over the last year and a half.
00:30:00That's a good shot.
00:30:05Really good work that is.
00:30:07Going on to the offside.
00:30:09And working the ball on to the on.
00:30:12For three runs.
00:30:14One sixty-four for five.
00:30:17One sixty-four for five.
00:30:22Outside edge.
00:30:23Great work, Abidaville.
00:30:24He's terrific without the gloves on.
00:30:26And he's doing a good job with them on today.
00:30:29This is just outstanding.
00:30:36On purpose, it opens the face.
00:30:39And look at that.
00:30:40For a dive across.
00:30:41And with gloves on, looks to try and hit the stumps.
00:30:44Just misses.
00:30:46And it's appreciated by Dale Steyn.
00:30:49Because that ball was heading to the boundary.
00:30:52He didn't carry.
00:30:59He's an outside edge.
00:31:02Seen that throughout this innings.
00:31:06Just a little bit of up and down bounce.
00:31:17New Zealand just cannot get the ball away to the boundary at the moment.
00:31:21That's the signal for the batting power play.
00:31:36Down.
00:31:37It's a good start.
00:31:44That impressed with Graham Smith's captaincy today.
00:31:47On the other side of that, as I said to Pomi Mbangwa,
00:31:51he's been backed up beautifully by his bowlers.
00:31:54And that is a terrific strike from Kane Williamson.
00:31:56Over long arm and away for six runs.
00:31:59So, a good blow to start the batting power play.
00:32:02That is a real good shot.
00:32:09Something positive.
00:32:11From New Zealand right now.
00:32:13It's exactly what they needed.
00:32:14No man back.
00:32:15You've got to take the chance.
00:32:16Go over the top.
00:32:17It's the power plates.
00:32:18This is the happy hour.
00:32:19And it starts the over well.
00:32:20You get two balls.
00:32:21You've got six already.
00:32:22Lovely shot.
00:32:23Oh.
00:32:24Oh, he's missed everything.
00:32:25It's gone straight through.
00:32:26It'll be buys.
00:32:27And it'll be four of them.
00:32:29Catch him.
00:32:30Catch him.
00:32:31Chipped away.
00:32:32Williamson will come back.
00:32:33He's very quick.
00:32:34No.
00:32:35He slipped.
00:32:36Good work too, from Dumini, in the outfield.
00:32:39Slower ball, straight up in the air.
00:32:40Will be out.
00:32:41It has the back,dolls.
00:32:42He's close.
00:32:43Oh, he's close.
00:32:44He's close.
00:32:45Oh.
00:32:46He's close.
00:32:48He's close.
00:32:49He's close.
00:32:50He's close.
00:32:51He's close.
00:32:52Through his eyes.
00:32:53He's close.
00:32:54Keep him close.
00:32:55He's close.
00:32:56He's close.
00:32:57He's close.
00:32:58and is out jp dumini makes no mistake stain gets his man and nathan mccullum has to go for six
00:33:10well you talked about the good slower ball he bowls the quick arm action the ball comes out slowly
00:33:15you've got to be so careful when you have a slot miss it very easily
00:33:19slower delivery you can just see slices it up she goes and he was never going to drop this
00:33:29good field he is so another wicket goes down for new zealand
00:33:34188 for six as mccullum leaves the scene for six
00:33:41jacob oram is the new batsman at number eight tall left-hander
00:33:49so sweeps and norm gets away with it into the gap and that'll be four
00:33:56good shot from jacob oram the right shot as well the percentages
00:34:11smile as he might faf duplessis backs himself to hit even one stump
00:34:16gone for all money he was and he had a bit of time steadied himself oh
00:34:28a good man to have at this stage he'll want to tighten jacob oram up more sides around the world
00:34:32are doing that it's one of the reasons oram isn't or hasn't been quite the threat with the bat that he
00:34:37can be that's where you bow to him now in the middle and leg and full don't bother allowing him to use
00:34:46his arms good delivery from mornay morkel first ball back he'd be a bit stiff he ran in really hard
00:34:54and got it right first ball it's that's important as we've known now gives himself room likes to use
00:35:03the big levers he misses you hit
00:35:08and another wicket goes down a big one as well gone for seven two oh four for seven
00:35:12not much time for daniel vettori to make an impression four overs of the power play have cost 32
00:35:23wickets have fallen in that time south africa closing in like they mean real business here in bangladesh
00:35:30tonight
00:35:35gee how about that for a shot what a way to get going
00:35:41dan why didn't you bet earlier
00:35:45he's got it mone's magic does it for south africa new zealand eight down for 210
00:35:52the batsman misses you've got to be hitting just perfect just slower
00:36:14oh hang on we've all got to wait a minute here because uh the umpire's out in the middle
00:36:18alim dar i think it is it wants to check on a no ball no comfortable no problem
00:36:34lukewood woodcock playing his first world cut match he's played a couple of one days before against
00:36:40pakistan come and asked to bring in a guy for a quarter-final against south africa
00:36:44dale stain about the final over of the innings woodcock on strike
00:36:54woodcock off strike and still in
00:36:58had to run it had to get off strike
00:37:01the offside sweep is up leg side another one's back so they go offside very good thinking
00:37:19smart street smart performance from williamson
00:37:25last ball in the innings no it isn't because it's a wide but the run out isn't gone
00:37:32good day for the stain morkel combination they picked up five wickets for 88 between them
00:37:52and they're 20 overs
00:37:5718 of them at least and morkel just bowled the eight 221 for eight then for new zealand
00:38:06well ducker isn't usually a high scoring venue but that score of 221 may have been a few runs short of
00:38:13what new zealand had hoped for after losing both openers cheaply the black caps had to rebuild
00:38:18which jesse rider and ross taylor did to good effect in their partnership of 114 but then lost wickets
00:38:24consistently to prevent them from pushing on riders 83 was the standout knock his first half century of
00:38:31the tournament graham smith really mixed up his bowlers giving them short sharp spells and it had
00:38:38the desired results 29 overs were bowled by the spinners of whom imram tahir was again the pick but
00:38:44the returning seamers stain and morkel were also threatening they bagged five wickets between them
00:38:51later in the show we'll be hearing from both the sri lanka and england camps ahead of their cause final
00:38:56clash tomorrow but next it will be highlights of the south africa run chase they needed 222 to reach the
00:39:03semi-finals
00:39:15that's it well mccullum down the wicket brilliantly taken outstanding for peterson very clever from dale
00:39:22staying surely will be caught as a terrific stroke and again here we go there we go boy
00:39:35they don't drop these the south africans no no no comfortable catch every wicket that he gets he relishes
00:39:43so at the interval with just 222 the target the favorites would have been south africa that's not
00:39:55a tag they've always been comfortable with though here are the highlights of the run chase
00:39:59so here we go south africa faltered in a chase of 172 against england they were bowled out short of
00:40:16that total in this world cup they said they learned a lot from it tonight is a chance to put that on the
00:40:24board you feel the 222 isn't enough but can vittoria and his men
00:40:32can new zealand on a very slow pitch
00:40:36overturn the tables here singles are going to be important for south africa
00:40:46already just seeing the state of this pitch
00:40:48already just seeing the state of this pitch the first delivery a little bit low and a little bit slow
00:40:54well Liam bishop you just said uh
00:40:59game against england south africa here's the first runs
00:41:06of course south africa and umla chasing double nelson 2-2-2
00:41:12all those superstitions and idiosyncrasies around cricket play on players minds
00:41:26that's a beauty because he's uh not trying to over hit it and it's the first boundary for south africa
00:41:32now is that gone they're throwing it in the air the new zealand think they have their man amla looks to walk
00:41:46the umpires will get together has it gone on to the boot and into the hands of slip it will be a fortuitous
00:41:54this wicket if it is
00:41:58well i think he knows i think you picked it ian bishop was about to walk off
00:42:05he played the stroke kept low at the bottom of the blade and he could see he was looking in that
00:42:09direction so he could so comfortably see the line of the ball check the no ball that's fine
00:42:15but uh intrigued is to see this replay front on and this will give us a great indication
00:42:27bottom of the bat off the boot there you go
00:42:32so unlucky is hashim amla but guess what they were chasing 2-2-2 and there's a bit of slice of luck
00:42:40tie you better believe it straight off the boot the right boot of brenda mccullum unbelievable
00:42:50and amla walks off dejectedly can't blame him so unlucky
00:42:57he heads back to the dressing room for seven it's eight for one
00:43:01jack callis is in at number three
00:43:19this is very innovative and a very clever move
00:43:23move from the captain here's a run-out chance now direct hit shake of the head for melinda
00:43:34and normally umpires would go upstairs to be safe i think there was one umpire the other night
00:43:38simon toffle who made a mistake in the western knees match but this one to me with a natural eye
00:43:44looks safe for graham smith
00:43:55lovely stroke and look how it just flies across this outfield but saved good stuff
00:44:01oh and a big shout out on the league side darren moves the mccullum brothers
00:44:18off the pad
00:44:34big shot good shot down the ground over the bowlers head for four jack callis
00:44:41taking the attack to daniel vettori successfully
00:44:55up to the pitch straight back over
00:44:58big shout huge shout and not given
00:45:13is down the track as well
00:45:16some action then from jack callis they're thinking about going upstairs for the review our new zealand
00:45:21and not convinced they're not convinced slip and keeper not convinced and so they're just going to leave it alone
00:45:32oh boy oh boy a couple of balls where a lot has happened
00:45:43should they have gone
00:45:44oh
00:45:5127 for one
00:45:55beautiful shot from jack callis
00:45:59just a straying in line
00:46:01from tim saudi and is put away in fine style on the onside by callis four runs
00:46:06in the air but short well short good surprise delivery
00:46:25he's drifted on to callis's legs again and he's paid full penalty as he did in the previous over
00:46:36so
00:46:38brilliant shot
00:46:40touch that's what it is
00:46:45touch and timing
00:46:48got it in the gap use the wrists
00:46:51whips it onto that onside and gets four
00:46:54he's all class as jack callis and he's pain to the bowler
00:46:58smashed away for four so the last ball of the over not a good one for more
00:47:08four more and 50 up for south africa they are 50 for one after 10.
00:47:13to the gap that'll be four
00:47:25just what smith needed the hard volley
00:47:31floated up there wasn't it width and wide
00:47:34it's just too easy for graham smith
00:47:45good delivery oh
00:47:49now he just dearly left to get a little lead
00:47:51it's just too easy there jacob warham he's dished up a wide one
00:48:02but all graham smith was able to do was hit it in the air
00:48:05straight to the man at backward point and smith sillings comes to an end
00:48:11this is just what new zealand needed
00:48:15the time was perfect there was width as you say and smith was a little bit lazy on it and how
00:48:19was all over it smith can't believe it it was there to drive it was wide and he got lazy on it
00:48:26sliced it orem elated and why not south africa lose their second wicket and it's the big one it's
00:48:32graham smith gone for 28 69 for two
00:48:41baby de villiers is is the new batsman number four looking keeper
00:48:47top class batsman that is one of the most impressive records you'll come across
00:48:58that's good fielding
00:48:59no run
00:49:04that's what they're asking they're up for it now i can tell you kiwis are fighting hard you'd expect
00:49:08nothing less
00:49:13yeah another good stop
00:49:18the crowd get very excited they don't immediately realize the ball's been hit into the ground
00:49:22well ab finds the gap what a relief to him to get a full toss in a nice hitting zone
00:49:39very things boundaries
00:49:42take advantage of that he's done it
00:49:51right now putting away the bad ball
00:49:53the billy is understandably eager to get at the ball
00:50:03wonderful stop it is terrific backup cricket the only loose ball in the over and the fieldsman saves it for new zealand
00:50:20go
00:50:29go you gotta go you had to go
00:50:33and i think he's all right he de villiers is very quick and i don't think that mccullum
00:50:39i think mccullum i think mccullum thinks it's out either
00:50:52no
00:50:54de villiers is quick halfway down the pitch there he had a lot to do
00:50:56oh what timing that is most glorious stroke from ab de villiers
00:51:11magnificent cricket shot
00:51:15as good as you'll see off the back foot
00:51:19oh look at that
00:51:26that's good chase by nathan mccullum
00:51:29the ball almost went higher than
00:51:32but it went far
00:51:37oh
00:51:40two consecutive balls that has vittori holding his head
00:51:45on another day either of those could have gone his way
00:51:47that'll be a fun replay this one
00:52:06easy as you like hold the pose for the camera
00:52:17rick to it
00:52:21and they're gonna go upstairs
00:52:22well they think that jacques callis was just a little bit lazy in the last two or three yards of that run
00:52:30and it was a throw almost a casual afterthought from
00:52:34Daniel vittori at mid on so they're just having a little look and that's why he's all right
00:52:40but he's only just all right
00:52:41it's time really for uh alim dar to get into a perfect position square on so rather use the
00:52:51the third umpire in the cameras to be sure of the decision not out on we go
00:52:54could be trouble directly oh my callis was late in taking off
00:53:09almost as if he was caught by surprise with the call from the villiers
00:53:13he's late to go well he should have had that wake-up call in the previous over oh very tight
00:53:22very tight indeed
00:53:23oh this is good yeah it is oh but not good enough because this oh is just extraordinary
00:53:34and it had to be all six foot six of jacob oram high fives all around and the crowd is going berserk
00:53:42with a wonderful piece of fielding
00:53:49outstanding catch
00:53:52because it was going away from him he was running back he was really peddling
00:53:57it's the big side of the ground again and you thought he'd run out of room but he ends up taking
00:54:02it well inside the boundary ropes and still has room to run around what a catch from jacob oram
00:54:09how important is it time will tell it's the end of callis for 47 108 for three
00:54:20three down now south africa
00:54:25jp dumini very talented left-hander little order player
00:54:33wonderful stance
00:54:40what a shot what a beauty of a shot from abe de villiers
00:54:45it's an on drive it was full of pretty quick delivery but just dispatched
00:54:54effortless is what it is when abe de villiers strikes the ball
00:54:58and because it's so effortless large majority of the time
00:55:03he gets close to good timing
00:55:13that's a look at the progress for south africa the red worm
00:55:17and they're going
00:55:17going along quite nicely
00:55:24it's a a little opportunity you'd say for the new zealanders because they have a new batsman in jp
00:55:31dumini at the crease
00:55:32and what they would want is a scenario where they don't allow him to get away too easily
00:55:41and so in keeping him quiet would build up the pressure on south africa but also particularly on
00:55:48on abe de villiers at the other end who is the set batsman
00:55:53yeah got him that is a big wicket new zealander back in it not a great shot
00:56:01from dumini
00:56:07they're up for it the new zealanders
00:56:12oh it's a huge wicket it's slower much slower and jp dumini had to wait and wait and wait he
00:56:19changed his shot was going to go forward he had blocked a couple of deliveries before and thought
00:56:25perhaps i can get this away looked square of the wicket missed and his stumps were disturbed he's
00:56:32gone for three off 12. new zealand in it again south africa 121 for four
00:56:43franzwa duplicy comes in at a critical time does he have the mental wherewithal to play a critical innings here
00:56:56or is it down got to hurry got to hurry the throw the throw was a touch wide the dive came in
00:57:05was the dive in time it's abe de villiers who's trying to get into his ground the new zealanders
00:57:11feel that they've got their man oh goodness if this is out it's a well gigantic as a wicket he picks it up
00:57:20and the man is gone is gone by a long long way oh my word what's happening out there
00:57:31what is happening out there there's the confirmation and i said one new batsmen
00:57:38it's now two new batsmen oh no there's also a confrontation between people out in the middle
00:57:49gotta walk off out i think it may just be a case of de villiers trying to help out
00:57:55faf duplicy because he's run him out and the new zealanders will no doubt be letting him know
00:58:01that you've run out the man who's in oh goodness 35 from 40 de villiers goes south africa 121 for five
00:58:12come at the hour come at the man johann botter and it says way to the crease two new batsmen
00:58:24at the crease it's a dream situation for new zealand this is a look at the wicket is is called
00:58:31maybe de villiers in and de villiers is quick he's very fast as a runner guptill's quick as well but
00:58:40for him to be out by that much means it shouldn't have been a run
00:58:44and this is what happened after that you see there you go that's what i said kyle mills walks in
00:59:02styris has a word and all they'd have been saying is hello fuck you've run the main man out
00:59:10you've messed it up and then abie de villiers has a look and he sees what's happening and he comes to
00:59:16get them away
00:59:26from new zealand from looking like they didn't have enough
00:59:32and that was after the whole incident
00:59:34another quick single tory just a little slow i think
00:59:43we knew to proceed that it was vittori who was hitting it too
00:59:50balling a slower delivery not picked and orem continues his good form
00:59:57and south africa are six down now
01:00:04well outstanding he's just starting to get a little bit of reverse swing here jacob orem
01:00:10and this one has gone past the outside edge looking for the movement back in that's nipped
01:00:14away and just clipped the top of off stump that's what every coach will tell you you should be trying
01:00:19to do that is a beauty johan butter on his way jacob orem celebrating and the new zealanders well they
01:00:28are in a very ecstatic huddle at the moment butter goes for two
01:00:34one ball remaining in the 33rd over robin peterson
01:00:38the hero against india that win in nagpur jacob orem with fallen hand
01:00:49the yorker first up end of a very good over from jacob orem one run and a wicket 128 for six
01:00:56and for mcculloch continuing it's past the outside edge
01:00:59down the wicket goes duplicy and that's good ball change has happened so they know that
01:01:10the swing is not there as it was in the last over and he's picked up three runs
01:01:15is that out oh he's been given that's an edge jacob orem has got another one
01:01:29and robin peterson he's gone
01:01:34it's all ending in tattersy at the moment
01:01:37just a little under edge inside edge and through to brendan mccullum they all knew it
01:01:50peterson looks at the inside edge of his bat he's got to go he's out for naught 132 for seven
01:01:59dale stain is the new batsman and will be on strike jacob orem has struck three for 23
01:02:07a little edge that'll run away for four
01:02:16every run counts right now
01:02:22nicely driven beautiful shot four runs for duplicy
01:02:32just a little bit of a loop up there maybe that's the way to go to
01:02:36dale stains take the pace off it just loop it up get a little bit of turn try and beat him in the flight
01:02:42this kind of bloke will want to go over the top
01:02:44that's out it is out nathan mccullum has his man there's nothing here for staying today who makes
01:02:54a brisk march from the field he feels what we all feel this might be a day for a black cat 146 for eight
01:03:07more than mccullum
01:03:18morning morkel could he have ever believed it would come to this that his hand with the bat
01:03:39was all south africa had left now limda signals the batting power play
01:03:47before morkel has to really go
01:03:56so many times tonight that the backcamps have missed by a fraction
01:04:07that's good good hard hit down the ground by duplessis
01:04:11New Zealand have been very wary of allowing him any strike or any areas in which to hit boundaries
01:04:17another good firm thump down the ground boy this
01:04:23this isn't over
01:04:26the one fellow that believes that is on guard
01:04:29Jacob Orem comes back into the attack figures of eight overs
01:04:32one maiden three for 32 he's taking two catches one of them a blinder out on the deep mid wicket fence
01:04:39it's duplessis on strike all the cover fielders are up
01:04:42catch and he's dropped one a return chance down
01:04:47even the big fellow with the great hands couldn't cling on
01:04:51catch and he's dropped one of them a blinder out on the deep wicket fence
01:04:54well we've seen it all tonight he's taken some great catches
01:04:58well we've seen it all tonight he's taken some great catches
01:04:58well we've seen it all tonight he's taken some great catches the first one of
01:04:59callous amazing there in the follow through he knows it yes it was clipped firmly low
01:05:05low full toss but well i reckon he would take this i reckon he'd back himself eight times out of ten to take that
01:05:12he's got such good hands and they're big hands to boot
01:05:18there's a man underneath it has it got the legs it's got the legs
01:05:26six of the most desperately needed runs in south africa's history
01:05:31oh the drama just took another page
01:05:36just being dropped from duplessis and he says i'll just release the valve a bit more
01:05:44oh beautiful length ball and gave himself room outside league
01:05:50was chased a bit and then woodcock couldn't get it
01:05:54and now he drills one extra cover away but there's another good stop
01:05:58how often have we seen martin guptill tonight
01:06:01oh yes that'll do it
01:06:05there is you'd have to say probably the final nail in the coffin
01:06:19southie with a sharp catch low down
01:06:24the fielding has come alive
01:06:27since that third wicket went down one knee
01:06:31opened the blade
01:06:33he was eyeing up cover
01:06:35and the man that could have won it for south africa
01:06:39he'd have to say
01:06:40has to go back to the dressing room
01:06:42out for 36
01:06:43it's 172 for nine now
01:06:46last man in for south africa
01:06:49down the track here we go should be out
01:06:58and is
01:06:59jamie howe takes the catch
01:07:02and it is all over for south africa
01:07:04the black caps are through to the second semi-final
01:07:08and up day over the moon
01:07:11this has been one of the biggest turnarounds for some time
01:07:15in world cup history
01:07:17they were coasting south africa
01:07:20108 for two at one stage
01:07:24smiles all around for the new zealanders
01:07:28in a way they're still stunned
01:07:30they are just so delighted
01:07:35self-belief it's an incredible thing
01:07:38108 for two south africa were
01:07:42chasing just 222 to win
01:07:45this sudden death quarter final
01:07:47here in daca
01:07:48well what an incredible fight back by the kiwis
01:07:55at 108 for two south africa were seemingly well on their way to the semis
01:08:00but a smart catch by jacob oram on the boundary to get rid of callis
01:08:03sparked a collapse similar to the one seen in chennai against england
01:08:07duplessis helped the black caps on their way
01:08:10by running out his side's most informed batsman in ab de villiers
01:08:13and from there defeat began to look increasingly likely
01:08:17he tried to atone for his error but when he went for 36 the game was up for the pro tiers
01:08:23daniel vettori didn't look a hundred percent so he needed his fellow bowlers to step up which they duly did nathan mccullum opened the bowling with his captain and was superb in taking three for 24 in his 10 overs tim south he chipped in with the prize wicket of callis but the scene bowling plaudits had to go to warham four wickets and also two catches for him he had a major effect on the south african innings
01:08:45so new zealand are in the semifinals of the world cup for the sixth time and they will now play the winner of the england sri lanka game tomorrow
01:08:52astonishingly south africa have still not won a knockout game in this tournament and after that 49 run defeat serious questions will be asked back at home mark nicholas spoke to both captains at the presentation
01:08:59yeah i mean it's very difficult to explain how you feel right now i don't know words really can describe it so we've just got to take it on the chin and you know it's been a very disappointing evening
01:09:06are there any things that you can highlight that cost you the match specifically
01:09:11look i think uh we bowled reasonably well and i think credit to jesse ryder i thought he played really well and uh to new zealand they really kept a lot of pressure on us through our innings i think at 100 for two we're sitting pretty well and obviously lost a lot of wickets
01:09:40to the middles and i think you know for us it's really you can only look at ourselves it's disappointing we've let ourselves down in the evening tonight but you know i think all credit to new zealand we wish them all the best in the semifinal
01:09:51you mentioned the evening twice during the afternoon did you feel you'd bowled and fielded well enough
01:09:55yeah i thought we did i thought obviously the partnership between jesse and ross taylor you know kept them in the game for a long time and we we had to you know really squeeze hard then and once we got that wicket i thought we were really good
01:10:05i thought 210 220 was a very reasonable total to chase in this wicket and we knew you know once the ball got softer and older it would get more and more difficult but we just needed to keep our composure
01:10:14we just lost too many wickets in a key space of time then
01:10:18that has to be one of your great moments
01:10:20yeah i think it was uh i mean all-round performance i could single every single guy on the team who who stepped up today right from the bat and then as soon as we got out there with the ball and probably the fielding was the thing that got us through and led by martin gupta who i thought was amazing tonight
01:10:33and you've lived up to your reputation as scrappers but i think a bit more than that a lot of skill and thought went into the way that you bowled and the way you personally set the field
01:10:43yeah well we i think with a score like 220 you know you've got to be aggressive and in a lot of ways the decision is taken out of your hands because you've got to keep attacking
01:10:50and we managed to do that and pretty much every time i brought a bowler on they did the job and we got wickets and guys kept hanging in there even when kelis and the village got that partnership together
01:10:59when the ball's in the air and you're running around the boundary are you thinking to yourself i've got it covered
01:11:04oh i was thinking i've got to go hard at this or else i'm not gonna get near it so thankfully i was tall enough to start with and managed to get there
01:11:12is looking back now do you think that was the turning point
01:11:16uh i suppose so but i don't want to take credit for the win uh it's just a matter of they had a good partnership going
01:11:22uh obviously callus outstanding player um and i suppose if i don't get to that it's four and they keep the momentum
01:11:29so happy with the catch and if it wants to change the game then i'll take that
01:11:33thank you
