Hindus More Polygamous Despite the Ban; Only Islam Puts a Limit – Dr Zakir Naik
In this revealing lecture, Dr. Zakir Naik addresses the misconception that polygamy is unique to Islam. Citing historical and contemporary evidence, he explains how polygamy has been practiced widely among Hindus despite legal restrictions, while Islam is the only religion that places a strict limit and conditions on it. The talk highlights the wisdom, fairness, and social solutions behind Islam’s regulation of marriage, contrasting it with unrestricted practices in other cultures.

00:00When the chief rabbi of Israel put a ban that Jews cannot marry more than one woman, then 1950, just 74 years back, when we read the statement of status of women in Islam, published in 1975, page number 66 and 67,
00:27it says that the percentage of polygamist marriages in India, Muslims had 4.31% polygamist marriage, 4.31% in a span of 1951 to 1961, in a span of 10 years.
00:46This report is saying in a span of 10 years, 1951 to 1961, then the Muslims had 4.31% of polygamist marriages and the Hindus had 5.06%.
01:00That means 7.75% the Hindus did more polygamist marriages than the Muslims.
01:12Though in India, the Muslim is allowed to have more than one wife by law, Muslim Personal Act.
01:18But the Hindu, from 1954, it's illegal for them to have more than one wife.
01:25Yet, even though it's illegal, more Hindus do polygamist marriages in India than Muslims.
01:33Imagine if the law allowed, how many did they have done? How many?
01:37So, these are statistics.
01:42Now, let us understand, what does Quran, what does Islam say?
01:47Allah says in the Quran, in Surah Nisa chapter 4, verse number 3.
01:53Marry woman of your choice, in twos, threes or fours, but if you can't do justice, marry only one.
02:01So, this statement, that marry only one, is only in the Quran.
02:07I'm repeating.
02:08Allah says in the Quran, in Surah Nisa chapter 4, verse number 3.
02:13Marry woman of your choice, in twos, threes or fours, but if you can't do justice, marry only one.
02:20This statement, if you can't do justice, marry only one, is only given in the Quran.
02:25And Allah further says in Surah Nisa chapter 4, verse number 129.
02:29You cannot be just between, you cannot do justice between the women altogether.
02:38You cannot do complete justice between the women, but do not turn away from them altogether.
02:47That means Allah is telling in the Quran few verses later, in Surah Nisa chapter 4, verse number 129.
02:52You cannot be totally just between the women, but do not turn away from them, do not neglect them altogether.
03:01That means, in Islam, marrying more than one wife is not farad.
03:06Many people think it's compulsory.
03:08In Islam, it is optional.
03:12There are five rulings in Islam.
03:13Farad means compulsory.
03:15Mustapha sunnah, which is preferable, encouraged.
03:20Number three is optional, mubah.
03:22Number four is makroo, which is discouraged.
03:24And number five is haram, prohibited.
03:26So, marrying more than one wife for a man.
03:30It's optional.
03:33But, in India, they say,
03:36Hum do, humare do, tum paash, tumare pachis.
03:39Means, we two have two children.
03:42You five have 25 children.
03:46That means, you know, husband, wife, marry, have two children.
03:49The Muslims, they marry four wives, and they have 25 children.
03:52That's how the population increases.
03:54Hum do, humare do, tum paash, tumare pachis.
04:01They fail to realize, logically and technically, there is an error.
04:05If one man marries one woman, and if one man marries four women,
04:13if there are four women, each one, one man marrying each woman,
04:16and if one man marries four, the chances of procreation is more,
04:21if four women have one-one husband.
04:23As compared to, one man having four wives.
04:28Scientifically.
04:30Because he'll have more chances, etc.
04:33So, it is a misconception to say,
04:36Hum do, humare do, we two, we have two children,
04:40you five have 25.
04:41It's an illogical argument.
