Lightsabers are something everyone would love to get their hands on. They’re about as futuristic and fun as swords can get. I mean, who wouldn't want to feel like a real-life jedi?!?

Still, one thing the Star Wars universe has that we don’t, is the material that makes lightsabers possible: Kyber Crystals. Those don’t actually exist. But building a lightsaber is still possible, although hard, since, you know, we’re not jedis, or Mandalorians.

The first thing you need to make your Lightsaber dream a reality, is plasma. That's not some made-up sci-fi term. It's something that exists everywhere. In fact, it makes up over 99% of the universe! And guess what: there are people who already built a realistic lightsaber. See how they did it!

00:00Okay, let's jump forward a hundred years to the year 2120.
00:04Come on, play along.
00:06You're in the stands for the finals of your beloved sport, fencing.
00:10Your two favorites are going up against each other.
00:13Lightsaber noises are the most intense sounds in the room.
00:16You can almost feel the walls vibrate.
00:18Plasma going up against plasma.
00:21The contestants are both wearing protective gear made from a material plasma can't cut through.
00:27That's the sound they make when they're cutting through air.
00:30Steel fencing swords are a thing of the past.
00:32Lightsabers are what's cool now.
00:35Just the other day, during Thanksgiving, you could see your neighbor from your window.
00:39He was using his own lightsaber to cut through his turkey.
00:42All his knives must have been dirty.
00:44He sent you a picture afterwards, and as it turns out, it ended up being a little too well done after the heat from the plasma.
00:51Well, back to this year.
00:53Lightsabers are still not real.
00:55But they are something everyone would love to get their hands on.
00:58But they're about as futuristic and fun as swords can get.
01:02Imagine a blade made of plasma that comes out and retracts whenever you want, and the only thing you have to carry around is a handle.
01:10In Star Wars, they were also called laser swords.
01:13Well, it makes sense.
01:15Remember those tiny little lasers you played around with when you were a kid?
01:18Those were fun.
01:19They were the size of your finger and could help you point at anything.
01:22They had that red light that came out from one end.
01:26Cats went nuts for them too.
01:28They still do.
01:29If you have a laser and you point it at the wall with your cat paying attention, it'll instantly run at it.
01:34If you turn it off, they'll be all confused and start looking everywhere for it.
01:39Some dogs too.
01:41In the movies, lightsabers are used both offensively and defensively.
01:45There's no need for a shield like in ancient times.
01:48They also cut through almost everything, except other lightsabers.
01:52Still, the one thing Star Wars Universe has that we don't is the material that makes lightsabers possible.
01:59Kyber crystals.
02:00Those don't actually exist.
02:02Technically, building a lightsaber is possible, although hard, since, you know, we're not Jedis or Mandalorians.
02:09The first thing you need to make your lightsaber dream a reality is plasma.
02:14And you might be wondering, what exactly is plasma?
02:17It's superheated matter, and often called the fourth state of matter.
02:21The first three states are solid, liquid, and gas.
02:24Plasma makes up over 99% of our visible universe.
02:28At night, you can see it in the form of stars, nebulas, and those lights you can see at the north and south poles.
02:34It's controllable too.
02:35With the help of magnetic forces, you can mold and shape plasma.
02:39But for it to work like it does in the movies, you'd need very large and bulky equipment.
02:44And that wouldn't exactly fit in your hand.
02:47We don't know for sure what size it would have to be.
02:50But imagine, it's the size of a car.
02:52All excited, you tell your friends you have a lightsaber.
02:55But it's in your garage.
02:57Still, very impressive.
02:59You all walk to your house, open your garage door, and there it is.
03:03Your very own bulky, large plasma equipment thing.
03:07It has a switch on the side for the plasma to come out.
03:09You press it, and a two-foot beam of blue plasma flies up to the ceiling.
03:15Your friends are in awe.
03:16It's the first time they've seen the fourth state of matter.
03:19After you turn it off, you can see the spot on the ceiling where the plasma hit.
03:23It left a mark.
03:24It's definitely not safe to store outside.
03:27What if someone tries to play with it?
03:28This equipment would also need to be as powerful as a nuclear reactor.
03:33Let's leave those at the nuclear power plants for now.
03:36There are people who already built a somewhat realistic lightsaber or proto-saber.
03:42The way they did this was by having the plasma eject out of a metal handle.
03:47They had to carry around a backpack to fuel the plasma.
03:50Otherwise, it wouldn't have worked.
03:51The key ingredient for this whole thing is laminar flow.
03:55Laminar flow is when the particles of a fluid all flow in parallel lines.
04:00The other type of flow is more wacky, scientific word,
04:04which is where the particles flow randomly and in opposite directions.
04:08If it wasn't for laminar flow,
04:10the plasma from the lightsaber would take off in any direction it felt like.
04:14The lightsaber's fuel is liquid gas,
04:16which, combined with oxygen and a spark,
04:19allows the plasma to flow in a straight line and to be controlled.
04:23So, to start with,
04:25the gas from the fuel backpack flows in a laminar flow,
04:28which is then directed into the lightsaber's handle.
04:31The fuel has to be highly concentrated.
04:34Then you need a spark.
04:36After this, the plasma will be ejected from the handle,
04:38and that's it.
04:39You've got a lightsaber.
04:41This plasma beam will burn at insanely high temperatures,
04:45which means it can cut through a lot of stuff.
04:47Or, you know, burn it.
04:49All this means is that technically,
04:53a real-life lightsaber is possible.
04:55But you'd have to lug around a massive backpack with fuel
04:58and combine it with oxygen to ignite it,
05:01which is a very dangerous thing to do.
05:04But unlike in the movies,
05:05it's not sturdy like a sword would be.
05:07It's a flow of plasma.
05:09And when you try to cut things with it,
05:11the plasma flow won't stay exactly the same.
05:14Another option for a real-life lightsaber is a proto-saber.
05:19Proto-sabers need fuel to operate and are very dangerous, too.
05:23Simply put, they're really hot blades that burn so bright
05:27that have almost the same appearance as a lightsaber.
05:30Now, if you still want a lightsaber but don't want to take the risks that come with it,
05:35awesome LED lightsabers exist.
05:37They're fairly simple.
05:39Usually, they're just a tube that contains an LED.
05:42And when you press the button that turns it on,
05:44it shines bright like a real lightsaber.
05:46Some of them will make the zoom noise, too.
05:49They're a thousand times safer,
05:50and you can even buy them as gifts.
05:53There's also the option of a laser lightsaber.
05:56It's just a handle, like a normal laser,
05:58but a lot more powerful than the ones you used to play with.
06:01These ones come with warnings because of how powerful they are.
06:05You might even have to wear glasses to protect your eyes.
06:08They can even be powerful enough to cut through stuff.
06:11Okay, but what if you just want to play with plasma but not a lightsaber?
06:16You still can.
06:17There are plasma globes you can buy and play around with.
06:21A plasma globe is a glass sphere that contains a lot of odorless,
06:24colorless, single-atom gases that won't explode or anything.
06:28They have an electric conductor in the middle,
06:30and when you feed some voltage through it,
06:33you get plasma inside the globe.
06:35Because your body conducts electricity,
06:37when you place your hand on one of these globes,
06:40energy flows into it.
06:42It's pretty cool because you can see plasma in action
06:44with the help of a small container.
06:46Bam! Technology!
06:48When real lightsabers come around,
06:51we're probably going to be at a place in time
06:53where spaceships might actually exist.
06:55I mean, real spaceships.
06:57Okay, picture this.
06:58You wake up one morning feeling like you want to take a trip,
07:02but not to anywhere on Earth.
07:03You've already seen too much of it.
07:05So, you pick up your lightsaber handle
07:07and put it safely in your pocket.
07:10Then, you take a look at your wristband,
07:12tap it twice,
07:13and your holographic phone pops out.
07:16Book me a seat two weeks from now
07:17on the next Earth-to-Mars flight, please.
07:20And you go about your daily life.
07:22You walk out the door and get on your wheel-less motorbike.
07:25It has jet propellers where the wheel should be,
07:28and they swirl around so you're able to control
07:30the direction you're going.
07:32After taking the high-up-in-the-sky invisible road
07:35made just for flying vehicles,
07:37you arrive at your office.
07:38You sit on your comfortable chair,
07:41ready to get some work done.
07:43Today, you're in the mood for something different,
07:45and you decide you want to work in Paris.
07:48No worries.
07:49You turn on the holographic scenery,
07:51and there you are.
07:52Two weeks later,
07:53you embark on the spaceship you bought a ticket for
07:56earlier that month,
07:57ready for a new adventure.
07:59What a life.
08:00Hey, doesn't that guy over there
08:02look like Arnold Schwarzenegger?
08:08That's it for today.
08:10So hey,
08:11if you pacified your curiosity,
08:13then give the video a like
08:14and share it with your friends.
