00:00The former Maboy landfill site is located on the outskirts of Derry London Derry. The site
00:08consists of two separate locations on the Maboy Road and covers an area of around half a kilometre
00:13square. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency carries out an extensive environmental monitoring
00:19programme at the site due to its location beside the River Fawn. The sampling of the water carried
00:24out 365 days each year as part of the Environmental Monitoring Programme. The monitoring data is used
00:31to inform the continuous risk management at the site. Daily specialised scientific tests monitor
00:38the environmental impacts of the waste deposits at the site and check the quality of the water
00:43in the River Fawn meaning that swift action can be taken should any issues arise. The Environmental
00:49Monitoring Programme monitors three key aspects of the site including any changes in the contamination
00:54caused by the waste, changes in the groundwater between the wastes and the River Fawn and any
01:00impact of the River Fawn itself. The monitoring locations have been selected based on the waste
01:05deposits and how contaminants resulting from these deposits are likely to travel and impact the water
01:11environment. Results from all of this monitoring are compared against standards and analyse for trends.
01:17Any breaches of standards or changes in trends will trigger further investigation as well as the
01:24initiation of an emergency response plan depending on the severity. Should a risk to the quality of the
01:31water in the river Fawn be identified, NI Water have procedures in place to stop taking water from the
01:37river until quality of water is of an acceptable standard. The abstraction will only start again once the
01:44quality returns to within required limits.
01:47DERA is continuing to develop an integrated remediation strategy to protect water quality in the river
01:54fawn that supplies drinking water to much of the city. More information about the Environmental Monitoring
02:00Programme and water quality reports are available on the DERA website.
