Pro-nuclear and anti-nuclear groups are rallying ahead of a public referendum on whether to restart the country's last nuclear power plant. The Maanshan Nuclear Plant was decommissioned in May 2025 as required by Taiwan's nuclear safety laws, and in alignment with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's policy to phase out nuclear power by this year. But opposition parties say losing nuclear power will create energy security risks for the country.
