Myanmar region sees 'desperately hungry people' after aid cutbacks

There is an increase in the number of "desperately hungry people" in one of Myanmar's most conflict-ravaged regions, says the World Food Program Myanmar director Michael Dunford. The situation was exacerbated in April when the World Food Program (WFP) was forced to cut aid to one million people nationwide, after a global downturn in aid funding led by its largest donor, Washington.

00:00There you go, man.
00:15The ongoing conflict,
00:43the lack of humanitarian access,
00:46the inability to reach populations
00:48where they need the support
00:51are all contributing.
00:53In addition, just moving commodities
00:55into this area are very challenging
00:58because of the constraints
01:00that are now in place.
01:01So all of these factors
01:03are exacerbating the food security situation.
01:06This is resulting in an increase
01:09in the number of hungry,
01:11desperately hungry people.
01:12We worry that the hunger levels will go up.
01:15We worry that the malnutrition levels will go up.
01:17And this is really going to impact
01:19the most vulnerable women, children, elderly,
01:22people who cannot meet their basic needs.
01:26And that's why we call
01:27on the international community
01:28to continue to support
01:30the World Food Programme in Myanmar
01:33and particularly in Rakhine.
01:35When you consider
01:36what is happening elsewhere in the world,
01:38people really aren't focusing
01:40and haven't been focusing
01:41on the needs of the population
01:43in Myanmar.
01:45We estimate as the World Food Programme,
01:47there could be almost 16 million people,
01:49over a third of the population,
01:52that are acutely food insecure.
01:54And this is particularly true
01:56in Rakhine itself.
01:58Welcome to Rakhine itself,
