00:00The Royal Welsh, a highly trained branch of the British Army.
00:07Stay close, stay close.
00:08You're gonna fight to the end.
00:10A frontline armoured infantry regiment.
00:13Go, go, go, go.
00:14It's a fighting unit on high alert.
00:16The job that we're doing is life and death.
00:20If Britain is called to fight a war in Eastern Europe...
00:23Time to go to work.
00:27These soldiers need to be ready.
00:29Helter, give me Rappi!
00:33It's a regiment with a legacy like no other.
00:36Royal Welsh, we are the best.
00:41Hardened from the bloody battlefields of history.
00:46With six months unprecedented access.
00:52We'll be there.
00:54For every trial.
00:55Dickie, let's go!
00:56Blood taken!
00:57It's very intense.
00:58Let's go!
00:59Gotta be sick.
01:00Go to the fence.
01:01Bit of funny games, innit?
01:02College.
01:04Every tradition.
01:06Get it down your necks.
01:07Come on.
01:08Mine's delicious and strong.
01:10Every triumph.
01:12As these soldiers train for war.
01:17Witness the pride and the honour.
01:19One of the greatest honours anybody would ever get.
01:20One of the greatest honours anybody would ever get.
01:23Of serving king and country.
01:26If we go to war, I want to bring every one of these home.
01:34This time...
01:35Move!
01:36Move!
01:37Move!
01:38The company embark on a dangerous live fire exercise.
01:40Fire, fire, fire!
01:41In the back of your mind, it's like, please does everything go right?
01:45It's fight night for the Royal Welsh boxing team.
01:48That's the boy you've got in this race.
01:51The commanding officer faces a test of his leadership.
01:55There is definitely pressure on you.
01:57It's fast, it's aggressive.
02:00Keep going!
02:01As they vie for promotion, some of the troops are pushed to breaking point.
02:04Right, get down!
02:06Yeah, I think I was like struggling to stand at one point.
02:13The 600 soldiers of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Welsh, live and work at their base in Tidworth.
02:20It's very tasty, I tell you that much.
02:22Training side by side, each and every day.
02:26To be ready to deploy at a moment's notice.
02:32But this is not a normal infantry unit.
02:36Building fire!
02:38Target!
02:39Move!
02:41As an armoured infantry regiment, they have specialist training to operate their signature fighting vehicle, the Warrior.
02:49Known for their speed and mobility over the most difficult terrain.
02:54Resilient protective armour.
02:57And lethal firepower.
02:58These are the vehicles that would be used on the front line if Britain went to war.
03:07Each 30-ton Warrior is equipped with a 30mm cannon, 7.26mm chaingun and 8 smoke grenade dischargers.
03:17Within its armoured walls, the vehicle is operated by a driver, gunner and commander, carrying up to 7 additional soldiers in the rear.
03:25The cannon is capable of destroying vehicles at a range of 1500 metres.
03:34Right!
03:36While the chaingun fires 300 rounds per minute and can pierce 4 inches of armour.
03:41Kill it!
03:42This is what we do. The Warriors is our life blood and we are the Welsh Warriors.
03:482-0-0, you are clear to go red, 7-6-2, 30mm, access indicated and report when set.
03:58Today, the Royal Welsh have travelled to Castle Martin on the Pembrokeshire coast for critical warrior tests.
04:04Target 22, please.
04:08This 6,000-acre plane is one of only two UK ranges for live-fire training with armoured vehicles.
04:13And the Royal Welsh have limited time here to get their troops up to scratch, essential for this battalion on constant standby for 28 days' notice deployment.
04:25Target to your front, automatic.
04:27Even though it's with an armoured infantry unit, we don't do this often enough.
04:32So we tend to only come to these ranges once a year.
04:34So this is then key for us to make sure that I can now say, we can deploy to war to say, and we are safe to do so.
04:42Company Quartermass Sergeant Chris Allen is today's RCO, Range Conducting Officer, in charge of coordinating this week's exercises.
04:51Five up, please.
04:53Being an RCO can be an extremely stressful job.
04:57I've got a company of 110 currently, so therefore I've got to get 110 people then through that range.
05:02It's quite a lot of pressure to get through.
05:05This is Chris's only opportunity this year, to get all his soldiers qualified.
05:10No, no, no, any fuseliers or anything ever.
05:12Fortunately, he's one of the Royal Welsh's most experienced soldiers.
05:16I've been in the army now around 19 years.
05:19It teaches you different life balances, I say.
05:22Back at base, his day job involves managing all the supplies for his 100-strong company.
05:27I hold over a million pounds worth of kit in here.
05:29This is the basic body armour as it stands, because there's nothing attached to it, etc.
05:34So we've got body armour plates.
05:36One for the front, one for the back.
05:38I hold 89 spades.
05:40Prime use for, yeah, going to the toilet.
05:42Trousers, hats, gloves, socks, pants.
05:45Kind of like Dad.
05:47I'd say more like Mum, rather than Dad.
05:51Roger, yeah, I'm content on that.
05:54I was in and out of jobs in Civic Street.
05:56I was always in trouble, fighting a lot.
05:58Got arrested a couple of times.
06:00And I also had a baby on the way, so I thought, right, I need a bit of stability in my life.
06:03Good, good, good.
06:04I got to battalion in April 2007, and then flew then to Iraq in June 2007.
06:15You chucked in the deep end.
06:17Going to Iraq instantly was a great shock to the system.
06:20Chris knows from experience how crucial it is for his company to be ready if they go to war.
06:26A woman got a safety, a pistol check back.
06:29These exercises are designed to mirror situations they could face on the battlefield.
06:35We're basically advancing across enemy territory.
06:38You're going to get a number of targets that will pop up that represent those enemy that we could come across.
06:43We need to engage those enemy and destroy them.
06:44All warrior commanders must learn to drive the vehicle in case the driver is wounded.
06:51Charlie, 101, one call, signs this is zero.
06:54Or the warrior and its soldiers could be left exposed to enemy fire.
06:58We've got a lot of junior crews who have never done this before.
07:03So we'll see how this goes.
07:09But shortly after starting...
07:10There's an issue.
07:17Tower, round this gap.
07:22Dye Tower.
07:24Yeah, send.
07:26They've got an issue with the chain gun.
07:28Yeah, Roger, going forward now.
07:30Sergeant Dye Britton is poised to conduct repairs, just as he and his fellow engineers would in the field.
07:36They're having what seems like issues with the chain gun at the moment.
07:40So I'm going to go forward and see what the issue is.
07:43Bloody nuisance.
07:4510 to 2.
07:47The vehicles can break, the weapon systems can break.
07:51It's not dry cycling.
07:53Trying to keep everything within check.
07:55It can be quite a lot of pressure to land on one person.
07:57So the fire switch cable is snapped.
07:59So it's not firing at all.
08:01And it all goes quiet.
08:03Unfortunately, the warrior can't be fixed on site.
08:05So it's out of action for the rest of the day.
08:07Yep, well done.
08:09And for colour Sergeant Alan in the control tower, it's a huge setback.
08:13If his troops don't qualify, they will not be ready to deploy to the front line as the first responders in conflict.
08:20Very frustrating.
08:21Especially when you think, this is our bread and butter.
08:24Armour is our primary role.
08:26And we can't now do it because a certain pattern on a weapon system is broken.
08:31Right now it's not looking likely to get through.
08:33It's a right pain in my ass.
08:34Coming up.
08:35A punishing training camp brings the Fusiliers to their knees.
08:38I'll crawl across the line if I have to.
08:39The boxing team have a crucial title to defend.
08:41a certain pattern on a on a weapon system is broken right now it's not looking likely to get
08:45through it's a right pain in my ass coming up a punishing training camp brings the fusiliers
08:56to their knees i'll call across the line if i have to the boxing team have a crucial title to defend
09:03you've thrown two shots in 30 seconds and even the battalion's most senior officer is in the
09:09firing line this is our target dead ahead
09:20the royal welsh a 600 strong battle ready battalion based at wiltshire's tidworth garrison
09:30it's here that its troops work are we exercise and sleep
09:39but keeping war ready often takes them to specialist training camps across the uk
09:44like otterburn in northumberland we'll have six minutes to get the line of departure okay only
09:51the most promising private soldiers from each regiment make it here each determined to rise
09:57through the ranks get that casualty up there let's go they face a brutal course to prove they are ready
10:04for promotion it's going to be harder the soldiers here will be learning how to be leaders they'll
10:10learn how to be a lance corporal well done keep going becoming a lance corporal is the first step on the
10:17army leadership ladder my way to the end a lance call is often referred to as being the hardest
10:23rank to achieve if successful these soldiers will be second in command of a section
10:28let's go they need to be fit they need to be mentally robust gonna be sick go to the fence
10:40hoping to prove he's got what it takes to be a lance corporal
10:43is fuselier cameron howells ripley one of just a handful of soldiers the royal welsh has selected to
10:50come to otterburn i'm from swansea uh it's in south wales it was all right but i was working
10:57i was building sites and stuff like that and i just i hated it i was just miserable i was 22 when i
11:03joined the army i was a completely different person before the army i was lazy this is best job in the
11:10world today howells ripley has been selected to act as section commander in charge of a team of eight
11:21all eyes will be on him to see if he can keep his troops in check this is like the first time
11:27i've ever been a session commander and you don't want to up the first part of the assessment is a
11:34test of physical endurance the soldiers set off for a grueling four mile hike in full kit weighing up
11:42to 25 kilograms do you want to be that individual that's holding your people back holding your section
11:49back don't start going to work hard on this yeah followed by a 1.2 kilometer race carrying 80 kilogram
11:57dummies simulating a casualty extraction i got up the hill run through the woodblock and back down
12:03he's happy with that
12:07the exercise mimics the race to get an injured soldier on the battlefield to medics as quickly as possible
12:13in a situation where every second could make the difference between life and death what we're
12:19wanting to do is identify natural leaders who go above and beyond as the best of the bunch
12:26and they need drive determination the ability to take control when other people are possibly lingering
12:32behind with the team reaching the checkpoint howells ripley who's hoping to prove he's a potential
12:40leader gets some frank feedback on being more vocal you tell them how it's done right because folks
12:47struggling push them encourage them you stop and you turned around and you went jones have we got
12:52everybody don't do that right what you need to do is do it on the move there's work to be done for
12:58ripley who needs to be more assertive in the next exercise if he's to keep his chances of promotion
13:03alive i'm going to give you two minutes from the time i finish speaking and adding to his problems
13:10exhaustion from the first exercise kicks in i was bad i don't know why just must be just one of those
13:21things any questions i think i was struggling to stand at one point if you're not well enough
13:36i just don't want to quit
13:42the royal welsh have a training schedule that includes more than just military drills
13:47crouch sport plays a vital role across the army it's instrumental in reinforcing soldiers discipline
13:56morale teamwork and fitness and this regiment has a rich history of boxing dating back to the late 19th
14:04century charge you're dropping your hands again but it wasn't until five years ago that the sport saw a
14:12resurgence here they genuinely have a passion for it in the welsh i have a passion for boxing myself
14:19the minute i saw how successful they could be i then sort of approached the command officer at the
14:23time and sort of said i think we could we could do something here
14:29boxing lends itself so well to army life because you've got that control aggression in the field where
14:35you have to be able to pinpoint that violence as and when it's required it's the same as in the ring as
14:41well
14:44if you look at me as sort of the manager each company then does their own training with their own coaches
14:50mcgree you've thrown two shots in 30 seconds two shots
14:55a lot of infantry soldiers are fit but we call them army fit they're not boxing fit fitness is
15:03another level i'm confident is probably one of the biggest factors that's our first step and so
15:08to then bring them on to the team currently the team's star boxer is 21 year old lance corporal cody o'brien
15:18he's one of the longest standing on the team and he's probably one of the more experienced in level of competition
15:26this is a chore now these days isn't it always gotta iron you get before work
15:30i was quite young when i joined the army so i didn't really need to iron i just turned 18.
15:36going into the military there's a lot to take in it's a big change in the environment as well
15:40and it's hard but you get used to it
15:43boxing i've always had interest in i've always watched it then one of the boys asked me if i
15:49wanted a box battalion which i've never boxed before it was pretty scary and um i was like yeah
15:54i'll give her a go i've had quite a few bouts in all of them say 80 of them it's come natural to me
16:02but next week cody faces his biggest challenge yet when the team will be defending their title in the 12
16:09brigade boxing championship against the mercyan regiment we have to go home with the win after
16:16a good few years of being the box officer for the royal welsh this is sort of my last event now before
16:21i move on so i need i need to go out on a high
16:28almost 200 miles away at castle martin in pembrokeshire
16:32with the chain guns fixed the annual live fire tests with the warrior armored vehicles can continue
16:45and things are looking up for color sergeant chris allen who's in charge of training
16:51even though with all the frustrations with the vehicles our crew have been able to fight through
16:55those problems for us to get ahead of schedule as the royal welsh would be some of the first troops
17:01sent to the front line in a war it's essential they stay battle ready that means every one of the
17:09hundred or so soldiers out on the range today must pass this training
17:17and lieutenant colonel ollie beard the man in charge of the entire battalion is no exception
17:24right so we are loading ourselves up he's a seasoned officer but he took over command of the battalion
17:30just two months ago even though i've served for a long time in the army it's the first time i've
17:37served in an armored infantry battalion i've got to go through that same training progression
17:43that all of our brand new soldiers have to do as you're roger happy days okay we're now going to
17:49continue with the suit for this test the warrior crew have a maximum of 45 seconds to find each target
17:58and destroy it there is definitely pressure on you as the commanding officer people are looking on you
18:07to perform well the exercise is designed to simulate a real battlefield like ukraine five please
18:17but today they're faced with some difficulties they hadn't anticipated
18:20i can't see jack the sun is right there today operating this lethal weaponry requires precision
18:33so having a clear field of vision is vital to avoid missing the target and causing collateral damage
18:40so is that a target dead ahead
18:41finding the target is tricky this time of day we've got the sun in our eyes that makes it hard
18:50that's part of the challenge and real life will be like that as well despite all the high-tech
18:55equipment at these soldiers fingertips it's really hard to see that something as simple as being blinded by
19:02the sun can swing a battle in either direction next commanding officer beard must close the hatch
19:27adding pressure by limiting his visibility even further once you pull that hatch down it becomes even
19:35more claustrophobic even hotter it becomes noisier
19:44i see there's a lot more of a a challenge to make that all work together okay we've identified the
19:51bunker close assault stand by stand by five four three two one release now
20:05yeah target front
20:09with the test complete lieutenant colonel beard heads back to face the music
20:15in some ways you know how well you've done i think actually spotting the target is still really hard
20:20but there's always an element of doubt as you progress through your career you're learning
20:26something completely new at every different rank so it's always keeping you on your toes a few things
20:29to tighten up on but i think we're i think we're in good shape it's down to sergeant brown to deliver
20:35the verdict to his commanding officer let's get the bad news out of the way that was a fail there was
20:41quite a few targets you did miss but you didn't have the sight hood down if you'd close that
20:45yeah okay fully like a visor it would have it genuinely it wouldn't it makes a difference okay
20:50because as soon as it drops below the level of sun you're not you're seeing everything man
20:54i've got some work to do but i'll relish the opportunity there's a sun in the eyes
21:01ollie beard will be put through his paces all over again later in the week
21:06but if he fails he won't be qualified to lead his battalion into combat on the warriors
21:11there are no easy passes in this game so everyone needs to be able to meet that standard whoever
21:19you are for the soldiers dedicating their lives to being in the royal welsh whether they're training
21:28eating or sleeping everyone from commanding officers like ollie beard to new soldiers
21:37have the ambition to add their names to this regiment's long and illustrious history
21:47and up at the otterburn training estate one young fusilier is trying to do just that
21:54the best privates in the british army are being put through their bases
21:58where a select few will be promoted to lance corporal
22:0125 year old cameron howells ripley is leading a section and although the first of the day's
22:10exercises is taking its toll
22:14he's determined to carry on
22:17i could be ill in the field one day i can't be like oh i'm too ill to do this
22:22especially in battalion if i'm a lance corporal they get a few years looking up to you
22:26any questions go away brief your sections i'll call across the fucking line if i have to
22:33two sections right trying to see how you react under pressure so you just try not to crack really
22:39just keep pushing we're going to follow the pizza eyes of the road section f for competition okay
22:45if you're the session commander people look up to you you've got to be like looking like you know
22:49what you're doing take it till you make it i guess ripley must prove he can keep his section moving as a team
23:00a two-mile battle run testing their speed and endurance in a combat emergency
23:06where's the session commander yeah start booking switching on you get people falling behind yeah
23:11they must stay together just as they would in a war zone leaving no one behind
23:17but with exhaustion setting in it's not an easy task
23:23the fuck mate slow it the fuck down we're setting him right
23:27all eyes are on you at this point you want yourself to look good we also want your regiment to look good
23:33as well
23:35the team may have made it across the line but howells ripley is being judged on how well he's
23:52kept them in check you need to be loud you need to make sure that everyone else is listening to me
23:59yeah people are really struggling you need to start pulling not individually so you need to get
24:05individual of name to tax yeah because when you're telling the section to do it when they're in the
24:10hurt locker they're not thinking about the section they've stopped doing that they're thinking about
24:13himself if he wants to earn that lance corporal stripe he'll need to improve on his leadership skills
24:21tomorrow
24:25look forward to get back to tidworth then some family
24:31both parents they worked hard for me they gave everything i'm grateful for my family
24:36i need to pass this course why wouldn't i want to make them proud so stuff like that
24:42fucking all got emotional then you know oh coming up it's make or break for fusilia howells ripley
24:56o'brien's confidence is shattered come out and he just battered me and chris's troops on the
25:03warrior range here we go face their most dangerous test yet this is my right move
25:12the royal welsh wales's most decorated regiment
25:25that charlton give me that fucking smile these wiltshire barracks are their base
25:31where this 600 strong units run their daily drills and live alongside each other ready to be deployed at
25:3928 days notice which means regular exercises simulating battlefield conditions
25:53on the rugged pembrokeshire coast the first battalion are approaching the end of their training at the
25:58castle martin range okay two zero zero you're clear to go red 762 30 mil they're about to undertake a final
26:06challenge to test whether they are war ready the platoon attack how many mags do i need one mag
26:15operating together as a unit they will launch a coordinated assault three vehicles with six
26:21troops dismounting from each onto the field all overseen by color sergeant chris allen
26:29the purpose of an armored infantry attack is to combine in our armoured and our light roll
26:33capabilities together this is what we'll be doing for real life this is how we go forward on a
26:38battlefield multiple warrior vehicles will be using live ammo with troops exposed on the ground
26:46it's a live exercise a live range and if something goes wrong it lands on me unfortunately
26:53with four fatalities in the last 13 years on this range this exercise isn't to be taken lightly
27:00the risk to it is is immense you've got armored vehicles moving left right backwards forwards
27:07and in the back of your mind it's like please just everything go right please everyone run in the
27:11right direction the vehicle go in the right direction so therefore it'll all become safe
27:16we got a section commander for this group yeah so yeah so you four gone while the troops prepare for
27:22action color sergeant allen takes up his post in the control tower to coordinate the exercise from above
27:32yeah a lot more pressure becomes on my shoulders they say and it gets very very complex when you
27:37introduce armor and personnel together the whole safety element then adds a whole new level
27:44six soldiers are loaded into each of the warriors
27:47ready to dismount onto the field okay just confirm now all the dismounts are now loaded loaded
27:57loaded over
27:59that's here roger uh okay we're now going to continue with the shoot
28:04here we go this is now where it all comes together
28:10the three warriors must now advance towards their next objective
28:14a bunker simulating an enemy trench position the soldiers could face in real life combat
28:28as i joined the army i went straight to iraq so therefore i was straight into the back of an
28:31armored vehicle when you're in the rear you really don't know what's going on you've got the weapon
28:38systems firing you've got the engines roaring
28:43and you're sat there in a dark space all you're listening for is the rear door opening someone
28:49shouting dismount and ready for you to get out
28:54this is on the right hand side go
28:55you have to solely trust chain of command in order to keep you alive
29:11the troops on the ground and the crews in the warriors must now work together to overwhelm the enemy
29:18come on come on
29:28in past ranges people have got injured and also people have died
29:32you have a great deal of pressure
29:37he had a great deal of pressure
29:53now close the door
29:54how's it roger good work luckily on my range everything went great no injuries okay that is
30:03end of shoot end of shoot go green rapport when set i'm immensely proud
30:09with the exerciser success chris can afford to indulge in a celebratory meal with the company
30:17royal welsh style so we call this range slop this is army cuisine at its finest
30:24if i'm perfectly honest with you a bit of mince maybe with a bit of potato a bit of
30:28carrot a bit of sweet corn a bit of peas always works well in bread
30:39at the gym in tidworth the evening's training is just beginning
30:45there are only a couple of days until the 12 brigade boxing championship and the soldiers need to be
30:51fighting fit
30:53lance corporal cody o'brien is the one to watch at this year's match
30:58it was all a different world boxing when you don't know what to expect
31:02the first time i got into the ring i wasn't very confident in myself
31:05everything was new to me and it was pretty scary and i started training i won my first five fights
31:12when i went to my sixth flight he came out
31:15and he just battered me which was not a nice feeling because i've never felt that or experienced that
31:21in my life so it was kind of a confidence drop like then i went into my seventh fight and i lost that one as
31:28well
31:28every great fighter and everyone who's ever fought pretty much has been scared before they fight
31:35if you've got a big fight and you want to win and it means something to you
31:39you're going to be scared and you're going to be nervous
31:41but you're ready but be confident about it i'm a nervous person so i get nervous really bad
31:51i'm hoping to win my next fight
31:56so i'm just going to go in and do what i do best
32:00340 miles away at the training camp in otterburn the soldiers are preparing for a final day of drills
32:07which will decide who's got what it takes to be promoted to lance corporal
32:12we'll set up from the cattle grid and then we'll go from there yesterday they were tested on their
32:17physical and mental endurance what did you learn from yourself what could you do differently but
32:24today they'll be assessed on their tactical maneuvers with a carefully coordinated attack on an enemy
32:30location the enemy comes up in your line of sight you can engage that enemy
32:39this will be a section attack stepping in to a section commander role and getting used to the
32:45mechanics of how it's done once again fusilier howells ripley is taking charge of his section
32:51push out and then i'll give my new coordinates a final chance to prove himself in his bid for promotion
32:59it's your first stripe to me it means a lot no stay there stay there having struggled yesterday
33:05communicating with his troops are you happy back there today he needs to show he can give clear
33:11confident instructions down this way down this way down this way which on a real life battlefield
33:16could mean the difference between life and death when your fusiliers are working under you you need
33:22to get the basics right okay anyone have any questions all right they need a good example ripley's
33:28mission is to ambush an enemy position will you hear the rapid close it yeah he must pick the safest route
33:35while issuing clear instructions to his team you see anything you can suggest right there's good cover
33:42going down you've got a stream as well little go on they're gonna go right his communication to the
33:49soldiers providing fire cover is crucial right you all see the enemy yeah look down there yeah see
34:00one time tree mitchell you go on lad essentially you practicing your skills and drills when and if
34:06you do go to war rapid fire if it happens we just got to be ready
34:17and it pays off
34:21ripley's section has successfully taken the enemy position
34:25i think that went well to be honest so um good rate of fire good aggression last bound from uh
34:33hand of the hill yeah not too bad that i'm happy with that you need to get as much round as you can
34:39yeah to the point where it's absolute rapid but howells ripley won't find out whether he's done enough
34:44to earn his stripe until the scores from all of his exercises are combined i've done everything i can do
34:51but now it's waiting in coming up the results are in for howells ripley not everyone can be a junior
35:05nco in the royal welsh oh f**k i've passed i've passed cody o'brien comes out swinging
35:14and battalion co ollie beard has a final chance to prove himself on the warrior
35:21that target front
35:34at the castle martin armored vehicle range it's crunch time for commanding officer ollie beard
35:39who's back for a make or break assessment we just need to identify which require point fire
35:45rather than a killing burst although he has a long career in the army
35:50beard is new to the warrior two one echo like the troops he leads he must be fully qualified to
35:57operate the weapon system ready if his battalion is sent into combat
36:02a zero roger but yesterday he fell foul of the blinding low sun which made visibility near impossible
36:10that test was a real challenge the sun in the eyes absolutely made that much harder
36:15driver and commander are in now he must take the test again and pass or he won't be able to lead his
36:22regiment in a deployment fundamentally i've got to be able to do this for my operational role just as
36:29much as they do it's a tough test it's a real test it involves firing on the move you know and it's fast
36:36it's aggressive there is definitely pressure on you as the commanding officer especially as we
36:44didn't have the best run out the first time zero two three golf this is zero you are to move to the next
36:53bound and clearing any enemy forces on route one release now
36:59zero roger a good work be advised prepare to withdraw over with the exercise over it's the
37:29moment of truth as ollie discovers if he's done enough to pass it's really beginning to feel
37:35much more fluid as a crew it might have felt good to us but this is the moment of truth
37:41we'll just jump to the side over right
37:45uh bunkers and no issues the main armament target priority was great um you engage the most dangerous
37:51first and then moved on to the final two main armament targets of which one of them was destroyed in
37:57time now you didn't destroy the second one it's about six seconds over at that point okay
38:04technique wise i think that was very good shooting
38:09a level four pass so well done cool thank you pass take that but room for improvement again
38:16take that brilliant thanks thanks for the feedback that's great just shows doesn't it that the more
38:21time you spend doing it together you just get better and better so you get quicker at the drills
38:26more efficient more effective definitely pizza sitting behind a desk for a day job especially on a
38:31day like today
38:36back at lugnaw barracks the home of the royal welsh one of the battalion's more junior members is also
38:42hoping that his training is about to pay off
38:44tonight lance corporal cody o'brien will be stepping into the ring for the 12 brigade boxing championship
38:58and the pressure's on as his fellow troops and senior officers are watching expectantly from ringside
39:04so now everyone's here this is where i get pretty nervous so i just want to keep myself cool get ready
39:12for the fight hopefully robert's come out with a win and bring the trophy up
39:19it's a featherweight contest boxed over three two minute rounds
39:24i get really nervous like really bad it's always a night before i struggle really struggle to sleep
39:30because i'm always thinking about what i can do in a fight until i get into a ring you're in the game
39:37then everything goes that's the man you're gonna destroy boy that's the boy you're gonna destroy
39:45his opponent reagan payne is from old rivals the mercy and regiment cody's fighting for both
39:52regimental pride and personal redemption after losing his last two bouts
40:03bell goes off it's just you and the other guy you can't really hear anything else
40:22when you're in the ring with everyone watching your adrenaline kind of like high rides it goes to the
40:28roof like
40:33so
40:43and
40:45and
40:55The referee has stopped the contest.
41:07With the referee deciding Cody's opponent is unfit to continue,
41:14Cody wins the bout.
41:18It feels very good.
41:20The win for all your friends and all your mates' work,
41:23it's a good feeling.
41:24Because you can't get anything better than that.
41:29It's a great individual victory for Cody.
41:32But have the Royal Welsh team done enough to retain the 12th Brigade title?
41:42The 12th Brigade Boxing Champions are one Royal World!
41:46Winning that just proves, you know, hard work pays off. I'm very proud of myself for winning that.
41:58The Fusiliers, who have returned back to base from their assessment at Otterburn, have been gathered for an important announcement.
42:11For Fusiliers, who's being considered for a promotion to Lance Corporal, it's a nervous moment.
42:23Have you been told something at all?
42:25So, those of you that went off to Otterburn as infanteers, you know it's not just a walk in the park, and not everyone can be a Junior NCO in the Royal Welsh.
42:37You wouldn't be human if you wouldn't say you are a little bit nervous.
42:41I'm going to call out your names, for those of you that are lucky enough to be promoted today.
42:45It's your first stripe, which I think is really important.
42:49Fusiliers to Lance Corporal, Thomason.
42:56Done everything I can do. Let's hope I don't fail it.
43:01Fusiliers to Lance Corporal, Hebenstraight.
43:13Fusiliers to Lance Corporal, Howells Ripley.
43:17Fusiliers to Lance Corporal, Howells Ripley.
43:27Christmas has come early, as I say, so yeah, I'm happy, I can't complain.
43:31Now it really starts, okay, but don't underestimate the responsibility you've now got as Junior Leaders. Well done.
43:37It's a really important rank to have. I'm seen as good enough for it, I guess, you know, in their eyes.
43:41All right, those guys who've just promoted, just have a quick photo.
43:43If you're in the Royal Welsh, you're in the fucking Royal Welsh.
43:45If you're in the whatever regiment, you're in that regiment, you've got to be fucking proud to be in that regiment.
43:49Hold you, hold that regiment to a high standard.
43:53Next time, two sergeant majors go head-to-head with their platoons in a brutal training mission.
44:07One hundred percent, you would have won that firefight.
44:10And the Warriors deliver when it counts.
44:13In Afghanistan, the Warrior drove over a roadside bomb. Nobody was injured. The Warriors saved my life.
44:19Pride is on the line for the Royal Welsh rugby team.
44:22We are the champions for the fucking reason.
44:24If you're interested in joining the Royal Welsh, scan the QR code or visit royalwelsh.co.uk.
