00:00Debunking false claims about migration and crime in Ireland.
00:07A segment that aired on right-wing American channel Fox News in early August has sparked a lively debate in Ireland.
00:14Ireland last year is seeing its biggest population surge since 2008, largely due to positive net migration.
00:22The country also seeing, by the way, a rise in crime.
00:25In 2024, Ireland experienced its largest year-on-year population gain since 2008, with a population rise of 98,700, according to the country's Central Statistics Office.
00:37However, the crime and robbery statistics presented by Fox are misleading, given that the country's Statistics Office does not classify crimes under the broad labels of robbery and violent crime.
00:47The 18% figure cited by Fox appears to refer to an increase in robbery, extortion and hijacking from 2023 to 2024,
00:56while the 10% figure refers to an increase in crime incidents involving weapons and explosives offences.
01:03What the segment fails to mention is that crime has decreased in other areas such as homicide and sexual offences.
01:09Fox News also made this claim.
01:11Murder and assault attempts are surging.
01:14However, the network did not provide a time frame for this claim and Euroverify found no evidence to support it,
01:20when comparing crime from 2025 and 2024 with recent years.
01:25During the segment, Fox also implied that there is a causality between rising migration and an alleged crime increase in Ireland,
01:31placing both figures side by side.
01:34However, it provided no evidence to support this,
01:36while Ireland's Department of Justice told Euroverify that rising immigration over the past decade
01:41has not led to a rise in crime, saying there is no credible evidence to suggest a causal link.
