In this heartfelt discussion, Dr. Zakir Naik explains the Islamic ruling on repentance for zina (fornication or adultery) and whether a person must face the legal punishment after sincerely regretting their sin. He clarifies the conditions of true taubah (repentance), Allah’s vast mercy, and the distinction between personal repentance before Allah and judicial punishments in an Islamic legal system. The session offers hope, guidance, and a reminder that no sin is too great for Allah’s forgiveness when one turns back with sincerity.

00:00I have committed zina, but soon afterwards I regretted my actions.
00:05Will Allah forgive me or must I be flogged a hundred times?
00:10Finally, I need advice on becoming a better Muslim.
00:15The question posed by a Nigerian student is that he unfortunately committed zina and he repented and he has regretted.
00:23Will Allah forgive him? Should he be flogged?
00:26Point number one, if anyone commits a sin, he should repent for it.
00:33And for repenting, there are five criteria.
00:35And I said this earlier also.
00:36Number one, he should agree what sin he is doing is wrong.
00:42Number two, he should stop it immediately.
00:45Number three, he should not commit that sin again.
00:48Number four is he should repent to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for that sin.
00:53Number five, if he can undo it, for example, if he has robbed something, he can give it back.
00:59If the act is he has taken something and can undo it, he should undo it.
01:03Otherwise, it's okay.
01:05So the fifth point is, if he's robbed something, he should give it back.
01:09Or if he cannot undo, it's excused.
01:12So there are minimum five criteria.
01:13First, agree it is wrong.
01:14Stop it immediately.
01:15Not to do it again.
01:16Repent for it.
01:17And ask Allah for forgiveness.
01:18If something and can undo it, he should undo it.
01:20Otherwise, it's okay.
01:22So now since this Muslim Nigerian student has committed zina, he has regretted it.
01:28You have agreed it is wrong.
01:29You have stopped it.
01:30See, you don't do it again.
01:32Ask for forgiveness.
01:33Inshallah, Allah will forgive you.
01:35Regarding a question that should you be flogged, then only Allah will forgive you.
01:40No, it's not required.
01:41Allah also says that the sin you do, you keep it to yourself.
01:45Keep it private.
01:45Don't make it public.
01:46It is not allowed for you to make your sin public.
01:51That's the reason I did not even read your name.
01:54So if you do some evil act, try and hide it.
01:58Repent.
01:58If your evil act is known to the public, and if you go to a court of law to a judge, then
02:06the judge will give you punishment.
02:08But if it's not known, if it's personal, it's your act what you have done, you have done
02:12wrong, keep it to yourself.
02:13Ask for forgiveness.
02:14Inshallah, Allah will forgive you.
02:16Yes, there have been cases in the past when there were lady companions of the prophet who
02:24didn't want to take any chances and told the prophet they did zina.
02:27Prophet said, go away.
02:28Come afterwards.
02:29Come after delivery of the child.
02:31Later on, then the punishment was given.
02:34And when some people started cursing her, the prophet said, the repentance of her, if you distribute
02:40in Medina, it will be sufficient for the full town of Medina.
02:43That means she was of that high level that she wanted to take no chances that she did a sin
02:49and she wanted punishment.
02:50But generally, you should not proclaim your sin.
02:54You don't have to be punished to be forgiven if it's known to the public.
02:59And even in the court of law, normally, there's a paqase de sharia that if someone goes and
03:04says, okay, fine.
03:05They will say, are you sure?
03:07And they try and such things, they delay and they give a smaller punishment rather than the
03:12hud penalty.
03:13So in your case also, you ask for forgiveness.
03:15Follow the five points.
03:16Inshallah, Allah will forgive you.
03:17There's no requirement of you to be flogged.
03:21Inshallah, Allah will forgive you.
03:23See to it that you repent and you do more good deeds.
03:27What do you have to do?
03:28That if you have done a sin, see to it that you do more good deeds.
03:31Beside doing the farayahs of your zakat, give more charity.
03:34Beside your normal farayah salah, you do more nafil, do more sunnah, do more of your tahajjud.
03:41So when you do evil, you compensate by extra good deeds.
03:44Beside the farayahs, more of the sunnah.
03:46And then last question was, how can you be a bitter Muslim?
03:49See to it that you are on tawhid.
03:53That you are sure that you are on tawhid of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
04:00See to it that you offer five times salah.
04:02Beside five times salah, even offer the sunnah and jihara muqad along with it.
04:06See to it that you get up in the last one third of the night and pray our tahajjud.
04:10Very important.
04:11See to it that besides giving zakat, give a percentage of income.
04:17Whether it be 10%, whether it be 30%, 40%, the more you give, the better for you.
04:21See to it that you fast in the month of Ramadan.
04:25And besides the farad fast of the month of Ramadan, you also fast on the first nine days of Zulijjah and on the Muharram, the fasting of Ashura.
04:38Preferably the three days, 9th, 10th and 11th of Muharram.
04:41See that you fast on the Ayyam al-Beed.
04:43And if possible, even on Mondays and Thursdays.
04:49See to it that you increase your ibadah.
04:52Not don faj, go for hajj.
04:54And inshallah, read the Quran daily with translation.
04:57Inshallah, you will be on salat al-mustakim.
04:59And you'll see that every year, you keep on increasing your ibadah, increasing your sunnah, so that you become a better Muslim every time.
05:08Hope that answers the question.
