Transcript
00:00Heard, O Father, strong to save, whose arms are thine, the rest of the world.
00:18Navy Regulations, Article 1037.
00:22The deck log shall be a complete daily record by watches,
00:25in which shall be described every circumstance and occurrence of importance or interest
00:30which concerns the crew and the operation and safety of the ship,
00:35or which may be of historical value.
00:38These are the men of the United States Navy.
00:42They come from all corners of the country, all walks of life.
00:46The reasons why they joined the Navy are many, and some date back to childhood.
00:52This is the true story of one of them.
00:55The Navy
01:21Gee, Dad, that's a beauty.
01:23Where'd you get him?
01:24Got him over in the valley, Bill.
01:26Gee, I wish I'd been with you.
01:27But I'll tell you something.
01:28What?
01:29If I'd had a real gun, I could've brought home a deer, too.
01:33Oh, is that so?
01:34Honest.
01:35There's a deer that comes down the stream to drink every day.
01:38I've been stalking him all along.
01:41Dad, when can I have a real gun?
01:43Well, maybe your next birthday, Bill.
01:45You'll be about old enough, then.
01:47Honest?
01:47That's a promise.
01:49Gee.
01:54Gosh.
01:55Gosh, Dad, a real Winchester.
01:58Happy birthday, Bill.
02:00You'll be very careful, won't you, Billy?
02:02Don't worry about me, Ma.
02:03I'm going to bring you home a lot of fresh meat for the winter.
02:06You wait and see.
02:09Let me show you.
02:10There you are.
02:18Thanks, Dad.
02:19Wait a minute, where are you going?
02:21I'm going down the river to get that whitetail.
02:22Now, wait a minute.
02:24Wait a minute.
02:26Before you go hunting deer, you've got to learn how to use that thing.
02:30Come on.
02:36See?
02:37Uh-huh.
02:38All right, you try it.
02:40That's good shooting.
03:07Can I go get that deer now, Dad?
03:10Yeah, I think you're ready, Bill.
03:13All right, son.
03:14Get ready.
03:19Well, go on.
03:20Take aim.
03:23Well, go on, son.
03:24What are you waiting for?
03:25Shoot.
03:28Bill, what's the matter?
03:29I couldn't.
03:30I couldn't.
03:32I just couldn't.
03:35Well, why not?
03:38I don't know.
03:39He...
03:39He seemed like an old friend.
03:42Like a person.
03:44I didn't want to kill him.
03:47I didn't want to hurt him.
03:51I...
03:51I just couldn't.
03:53I just couldn't.
03:54You must think I'm an awful citizen.
03:58Why, it's all right, boy.
04:00It's all right.
04:02I understand.
04:034 a.m., Sunday, 25 June, 1950.
04:14Place, Korea.
04:16Situation, war.
04:18This was the war that was not really a war.
04:25But in many a home, there was soul-searching.
04:42That does it, Dad.
04:45I'm not going to wait to be drafted.
04:46I'm going to enlist.
04:50All right, Bill, if that's your decision.
04:52But, Billy, you're only a boy.
04:54I'm 17, Mom.
04:56I was old enough to join the Navy.
04:57The Navy?
04:59That's right.
05:01You seem surprised.
05:04Well, I guess I am.
05:07Since I was an Army man, I always thought you'd join the Army, too.
05:13I've given it a lot of thought, Dad.
05:15I've spent a lot of nights thinking about it.
05:18Now, I'm going to tell you why it's the Navy.
05:21All right.
05:24I want to fight.
05:26I want to fight as much as anyone does.
05:28I'd like to go up front where all the action is.
05:30The one thing I couldn't stand is the thought of killing anyone face to face.
05:36I mean, where I could see who I was killing.
05:38This is war, Bill.
05:40In the Navy, it's kill or be killed, too.
05:43I know.
05:44I just figured it might be different.
05:49Impersonal.
05:50You know what I mean?
05:52It's different on a cruiser or a destroyer.
05:55Sure, you're trying to kill the other fellow, but...
05:57Well, you never see him face to face.
05:59You're shooting at ships, not at people.
06:03You know what I mean?
06:07I know.
06:08I must seem a little crazy, but...
06:12I just couldn't stand the thought of killing a man face to face.
06:17Any more than I could shoot that deer when I was a kid.
06:22I'm not afraid of being killed.
06:24I'm afraid to kill.
06:26Do you understand me, Dad?
06:30Yes, I think I do.
06:34Tell me the truth, Dad.
06:36You're disappointed in me, aren't you?
06:39No, you're wrong, Bill.
06:41I'm pretty proud of you.
06:42You know, it takes a lot of courage to admit what you did just now.
06:50Time, 1100.
06:52Place, Navy Recruiting Station, Portland.
06:55Duty, interrogation of recruits.
06:59Second line from the top.
07:01C-P-V-F-L.
07:04All right.
07:05And the third line from the bottom?
07:08T-O-Z-C-E-L-D-F.
07:11All right, son.
07:13Will you take off your glasses?
07:16Now, will you cover your right eye and read with your left?
07:20Second line from the bottom.
07:27I can't see it, Doctor.
07:28Well, how about the third line?
07:32Well, that one's blurry, too.
07:33Well, let's try the second from the top.
07:35C-D-W-F-L.
07:44Mm-hmm.
07:45Try reading with the right eye.
07:46C-D-W-F-L.
07:55Mm-hmm.
07:56All right, son.
07:57That's all.
07:58Sirs, your IQ is the best in your group.
08:02Your physical requirements were almost perfect.
08:05Almost?
08:06Your eyesight.
08:07I'm sorry to have to tell you this, son, but it's under standard.
08:11Does that mean you're not going to take me?
08:13Sorry, sirs.
08:14We can't.
08:15But, sir, I want to get into the Navy.
08:18I want to fight.
08:18Don't you understand?
08:19Supposing my eyes are a little under par.
08:23I can see fine with my glasses on.
08:25What difference does it make?
08:26Son, it's a matter of regulations.
08:28Regulations?
08:30What difference could they make in a case like this?
08:32They can make plenty.
08:34Ever hear of standing the watch?
08:36The watch?
08:37The most important job any man has to do in the Navy.
08:40Suppose, sirs, you got caught without your glasses.
08:43Suppose you had to stand the watch one night.
08:45And suppose that because of your poor eyesight, you missed a periscope or a conning tower of an enemy sub.
08:52Know what might happen?
08:53Let me tell you.
08:55Your poor eyesight might make the difference between the loss of a ship and several hundred of your buddies and their survival.
09:01A man who stands the watch has to have 20-20 eyesight at all times.
09:05See my point?
09:06Yes, sir. I guess so.
09:07You might miss a semaphore signal or mistaken identification on another ship
09:11or fail to identify an enemy plane or the other way around.
09:15And it all comes back to the same thing.
09:17I know. You don't have to tell me.
09:20The watch.
09:21But there's only one thing wrong.
09:23What's that?
09:24I want to get into the Navy, sir.
09:27I want to get in so bad it's coming out my ears.
09:31There must be something I can do. There must be.
09:33I'll say this, sirs. You've got the spirit we like.
09:36Then give me a chance.
09:37I don't care what I do. Just give me a chance.
09:40Tell you what.
09:42I think you're too good a man for us to let go.
09:45I'm going to recommend you for a waiver on your eyesight.
09:47A waiver?
09:48For specialist duty only.
09:53Time, 1500.
09:56Place, Great Lakes Training Center, Illinois.
09:59Duty, beginning of boot training.
10:02From civilian to sailor in nine weeks.
10:04In the Navy, your name goes on everything.
10:11Just in case it gets lost.
10:12Or you do.
10:21And in the Navy, you also have to know this.
10:24Just in case.
10:26Even a non-combative.
10:28Just in case.
10:29Hey, Specs.
10:36Yes, sir.
10:38Where'd you learn to shoot like that?
10:40My father taught me.
10:41Well, he sure taught you good.
10:44Prone, kneeling, rapid fire.
10:47That doesn't make any difference whether it's two or 500 yards.
10:50They're all bulls or fours.
10:51And the crazy part of it is, you're listed here as specialists.
10:56Yes, sir.
10:57But I'd like to see some action, though.
10:59You would, huh?
11:00I'd like to be on a tin can or a battle wagon.
11:03Someplace where there's fighting.
11:05I'll tell you, kid.
11:06I'm with you.
11:07You ought to be where the fighting is.
11:09Would you put in a word for me to the classification officer, sir?
11:12Come on, kid.
11:13I'll bend his ear.
11:14Come on, kid.
11:14Come on, kid.
11:21Did you make it, sir?
11:36Not quite.
11:38Oh, then I won't be seeing any action, huh?
11:40I wouldn't put it that way.
11:41You may see more than you want.
11:43What do you mean?
11:45From now on, your name isn't Specs.
11:47It's Doc.
11:48Doc?
11:48From here in, you're a hospital corpsman attached to the hospital corps school.
11:53What's that mean?
11:54It means that you won't be shooting at anybody.
11:57The only thing you have to worry about is the other guy shooting at you.
12:06Time, 0530.
12:09Unit, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marines Division.
12:13Place, Korea.
12:15Duty, establish beachhead, and move inland.
12:21The enemy was weak on the beaches, but he was plenty beefed up just ahead, ready and waiting.
12:31The time just before attack.
12:34The time when even the bravest man can be afraid.
12:37And on every face, the big question, who will come back and who will not?
12:42Some have been trained to kill, and some to heal.
12:49How much longer?
12:54Two more minutes and they go.
12:58I wonder how many will come back.
12:59Funny, I've always wanted to be a doctor.
13:04That's how I got my corpsman's ticket.
13:07But I never thought it would be this way.
13:10I thought it would be in a nice, clean, white, sterile hospital with good-looking nurses and clean beds.
13:17It's funny the way things turn out.
13:20You're disappointed, huh?
13:21To tell you the truth, no.
13:24All I ever wanted to do was to help.
13:27Help people with these hands.
13:29Here or at home, it doesn't matter.
13:31All I hope is I'm up to it when the time comes.
13:34You'll be okay.
13:35Billy, the thing is, I like it better this way.
13:39I'd rather be saving people than killing them.
13:42I know somebody's got to do the killing, but I'm glad I can help this way.
13:46So am I.
13:48Hey, Specs.
13:49Yeah.
13:50Got a cigarette?
13:51Yeah, sure.
13:59Light?
14:00Mm-hmm.
14:00Mm-hmm.
14:00Mm-hmm.
14:08First action you guys been in, ain't it?
14:11You scared?
14:14Sure.
14:16Anybody that says he ain't's a liar, let me give you a couple of tips.
14:22You get out there, keep low.
14:25Understand?
14:27You run, walk, stand, keep low.
14:33Best place is on your belly if you can do it.
14:35Got it?
14:36Yeah.
14:38You know who you're fighting out there?
14:41Chinese, North Koreans.
14:44Animals.
14:45And they won't be taking no prisoners.
14:48Savvy?
14:49Savvy.
14:52Maybe to sound crazy, but I'd rather be me than you.
14:56Why?
14:56Oh, red comes at me, I got a chance.
14:59It's you guys.
15:02Well, for my money, a corpsman's got the toughest deal out there.
15:04Thanks for telling us.
15:10Figure if I scare you guys hard enough, you'll keep your heads down.
15:15One more minute, we sure fall.
15:17I hope we won't be seeing you back here, Pete.
15:20Don't worry about me.
15:22I think it's good for this war.
15:24What makes you so sure?
15:26I've been through them all.
15:28Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo.
15:31Well, it ain't been made to could spell my name.
15:33See what I mean.
15:40See what I mean.
15:40Time, morning.
16:08Place, Bunker Hill, Panmunjom area.
16:12Duty, stand by for casualties.
16:16How is it out there?
16:16Oh, it's bad.
16:17I slept on a temporary.
16:19Better handle him faster, he's a goner.
16:20Okay.
16:27Louis, can you handle this alone?
16:29Sure, Billy.
16:34All use, Billy.
16:35The guy's had it.
16:35Hey, Louis.
17:02Quack, get an albumin bottle, set up some needles.
17:05This guy's still got a chance.
17:06We'll do an artery job.
17:15Hey, you're supposed to.
17:17Hi, Pete.
17:19Was it close?
17:21Too close.
17:22Told you they couldn't spell my name.
17:29Must have left out a Z.
17:32Okay, Sparks, we'll take over.
17:34You relieve us.
17:35Come on.
17:57Come on.
17:57Get easy, buddy.
18:09We'll have you out of here in no time.
18:11Go ahead, Louis.
18:12I can take care of him.
18:13Don't try and talk.
18:21I'll have you fixed up in a second.
18:34Look out!
18:35Let's go.
18:58Corman!
19:12Corman!
19:14Corman!
19:14Corman!
19:28They have to do it.
19:31He was only trying to help.
19:33He didn't even have a gun.
19:34He never had a chance.
19:37They have to do it.
19:39Take it easy, Specs.
19:44He was a friend of mine.
19:50We came out here together.
19:52We went through training together.
19:54Sure, I know.
19:57They're not soldiers out there.
19:59It's like Pete said.
20:00They're animals.
20:04And where you went from, Joe?
20:06They bushwhackers.
20:08The old stretch of the party.
20:10They got us and pinned us down.
20:14Where?
20:15Down in the ravine.
20:17Can they get out?
20:18Not a chance.
20:21They're...
20:22They're pinned down on all sides.
20:24I was the only one to...
20:26Get out!
20:36Where are you going?
20:37Down in that ravine.
20:39Well, you'll never make it.
20:41I can try.
20:46You're not supposed to be carrying weapons.
20:48You know anybody that's gonna stop me?
20:50You know anybody that's gonna stop me?
21:20You're not supposed to be carrying weapons.
21:22There's no working against them.
21:23They're all who you are.
21:25Get out of there!
21:26Get out of there!
21:27I'm not supposed to be getting out of it.
21:30I'm not supposed to be carrying weapons.
21:32I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
21:33I'm not supposed to be carrying weapons.
21:35I'm sorry when I was actually getting out of it.
21:36I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
21:37Let's answer those two.
21:38I'm sorry.
21:40Let's go.
21:41A man waits to die.
22:10A man who never wanted to kill.
22:13Now it's time.
22:15But what are they waiting for?
22:16Why don't they shoot and be done with it?
22:18What are they waiting for?
22:19What's the matter, buddy?
22:21You're gone crazy?
22:25I lost my back.
22:40Come on, Sayers.
22:52Yes, sir.
22:52According to this, contrary to orders, you appropriated several varieties of small arms and used them in combat.
23:03Yes, sir.
23:04According to this report, by your own action, you cleared the way to a besieged party of stretcher bearers,
23:09killing several of the enemy in armed combat above and beyond the call of duty.
23:13And that, Corman, Sayers, entitle you to a new rating.
23:18A new rating, sir?
23:19Well, in the way of speaking, yes.
23:20And from now on, Corman, you'd better carry an extra pair of specs.
23:43All wars end sooner or later, and men come home again.
24:01You know what, Dad?
24:03What?
24:06I still can't do it.
24:07Sayers, William, Hospital Man, Decoration, Silver Star, Honorably Discharged, 7th April.
24:20I still can't do it.
24:50I still can't do it.
25:20On the sea.
25:27I still can't do it.
25:28I still can't do it.
25:29I still can't do it.
25:30I still can't do it.
25:32I still can't do it.
25:34I still can't do it.
25:36I still can't do it.
25:37I still can't do it.
25:38I still can't do it.
25:39I still can't do it.
25:40I still can't do it.
25:41I still can't do it.
25:42I still can't do it.
25:43I still can't do it.
25:44I still can't do it.
25:45I still can't do it.
25:46I still can't do it.
25:47I still can't do it.
25:48I still can't do it.
25:49I still can't do it.
25:50I still can't do it.
25:51I still can't do it.
