00:30Is there anything that gets the juices flowing like a rivalry game?
00:34And our matchup is bitter.
00:36It has barbs and shots thrown on and off the field over the years.
00:42Welcome to Raleigh, North Carolina.
00:44Carter-Finley Stadium and home to the NC State Wolfpack.
00:48As we'll see a squad from the ACC, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
00:54Taking on a fellow ACC opponent, the NC State Wolfpack.
00:58For EA Sports, I'm Reese Davis, Jesse Palmer, and David Pollock.
01:02With me, guys, can't wait to get this started.
01:05The Tar Heels will put total weather to crank us up.
01:11Looking for an alley from inside his own tent.
01:14And he did a good job bobbing and weaving and finding a little bit of running room on that return.
01:21So the NC State Wolfpack offense is on the field and ready to start the game.
01:25Now, guys, let's not forget, the last time these two got together, we had ourselves an absolute classic that has provided motivation for one side ever since, David.
01:35I mean, such a back and forth, such a fun game.
01:38Everyone remembers where they were on their couch or in the stadium for that rivalry game.
01:43And that's what rivalry games are supposed to look like.
01:47Both teams playing with phenomenal intensity.
01:49It's going to go down right to the wire.
01:52And you're right.
01:52Those are the games that make college football special.
01:56Didn't get much on first down.
01:57It's second and nine.
01:58Off the play fake.
02:10Throws to the wideout.
02:12Just masterful working that sideline and getting the toe down for the catch.
02:17It'll be a first down from the 49-yard line.
02:20On the ground, it's Smothers.
02:29Got the first down and more.
02:32And he's brought down after a nice game.
02:36First down, you know you always want to establish the running game.
02:39How about this offense?
02:40Nothing fancy.
02:41Run the football.
02:42Be physical.
02:43Get a big game.
02:44Off the play fake on first down.
02:53That one comes out hot down the right side.
02:56This is the matchup everyone was excited to see in this football game.
03:00And it doesn't take long to get to it.
03:02One of the best receivers in the game.
03:04One of the best corners in the game.
03:06One-on-one.
03:07Quarterback taking a shot.
03:09And early on, it's the corner who wins, knocking it away for the incompletion.
03:14That won't be the last time these two guys go toe-to-toe.
03:17But this is where your eyes need to be all game long.
03:24How many times do you think they're going to run that one back in film study?
03:31Don't do that.
03:32Don't do that.
03:33Don't do that.
03:34That's a penalty.
03:35That's a penalty.
03:36That's a penalty.
03:37It'll be a long film study for him.
03:39One-on-one.
03:40One-on-one.
03:41One-on-one.
03:42One-on-one.
03:45The play-action fake.
03:50Got rid of it quickly, but it's incomplete.
03:53And I think the quarterback throwing that pass off his back foot is what led to that incompletion.
03:58Just not as accurate as he would have liked to have done.
04:00Back to throw, it's Bailey.
04:19Back to throw, it's Bailey.
04:25Fires to the wideout.
04:27Got it.
04:28Gets it inside the five.
04:29Down to the four.
04:30And it'll be first and goal.
04:33New center downs right on the doorstep for this offense.
04:36A first down run on the doorstep.
04:42And it takes it in for a score.
04:45Touchdown, North Carolina State.
04:48They did a really good job of setting the tone and stringing that drive together.
04:54It was a long drive.
04:56They needed to convert some specific spots.
04:58They did it.
04:59And here's how they ended it.
05:00With physicality.
05:02Punching them in the mouth.
05:03Opening this game with a statement.
05:05And they got the early lead.
05:06Here he comes with a return.
05:12Not a whole lot of room to operate on that return as the coverage unit was there and ready.
05:18So the North Carolina Tar Heels offense has the ball for the first time.
05:23The matchup we'll be watching in this one really takes you back.
05:26Big time running back going right into the face of a tackling machine at linebacker, David.
05:32Yeah, and we're going to see this individual battle a lot.
05:34Not just in pass coverage when they match up, but just meeting in holes.
05:38And who's going to win when they go head to head?
05:41That will be a big factor in who wins this football game.
05:45Well, Jesse, one-on-one, this is going to be a shame.
05:47This is going to be an incredible matchup.
05:49It's going to go on until there's zeros up on the clock.
05:52Both of these guys have circled this game on the calendar because they knew who they were going to be facing.
05:57Two guys we know are going to play at the next level.
05:59But I think this is probably one of the better individual matchups we're going to see all season long.
06:03Now they've got a little room to work with.
06:06They're out to the 28 with a first down.
06:09Here's this offense with a fresh set of downs.
06:12Loss to throw on first down.
06:22Off the play fake.
06:23Pressure coming.
06:25And the defense makes a play.
06:27They get the quarterback down at the 26.
06:30The defense just simply not fooled by the play action.
06:33Oftentimes the defense, you're hoping the run fake's going to slow down those pass rushers.
06:37But, man, oh, man, they had their ears pinned back.
06:53This crowd trying to make life miserable for this offense.
06:57Lopez to pass.
07:02Pocket breaking down.
07:04And here comes the pressure.
07:06And there he goes down again.
07:09Well, this team came out with their hair on fire.
07:11The offense drives down the field, scores a touchdown on their opening possession.
07:15And now the defense is dominating as well.
07:17Already their second sack.
07:19And you've got to give this head coach a ton of credit.
07:21He did a great job getting this football team physically and mentally ready to play here today.
07:30Now a lot of work to do to move the chains, keep this drive alive after that earlier sack.
07:36On third and long, no secret what he needs here.
07:39They'll run the screen.
07:41And that one looked great on the grease board.
07:44But when they blow it up like that, the defense is going to win every time.
07:48Looks as if we have an injury on that last play.
07:52And we'll take a break to check him out.
07:54And the Tar Heels decide to punt it away.
07:56This will be their first punt of the afternoon.
08:04On the move, looking for a little sliver of hope.
08:08They'll put a stop to that return as he gets it up to the 41-yard line.
08:13First step of this drive comes from their own 41.
08:18Going with the ground game left.
08:23Got it to first down and more.
08:25Breaks into the open.
08:29Touchdown, look back.
08:30Once he got a snap, it was all over right to the house.
08:34I am a great play caller when I can hand it to guys like that.
08:40And he can go that far to the house, create big plays, showed you a little bit of vision,
08:46showed you a little bit of burners when he kicked it in gear and got the long touchdown run.
08:50Ready to try the point after.
09:03And the extra point pushes the lead to 14.
09:07What a way to send a message.
09:09Huge play in the running game.
09:11One snap and you've got a touchdown on the board.
09:13From inside, his own 15, trying to follow his blockers.
09:23Just never had a chance to shake loose and he'll be brought down at the 24.
09:29The North Carolina offense returns to the field.
09:32They haven't exactly burst out of the starting box and they need to get something together with this possession.
09:39Caught behind the line.
09:40It's Gauss.
09:41Didn't pick up a lot there.
09:43Moved it forward just a few.
09:46Try to make up for some of that lost ground on second down.
09:55Try and play action.
10:00This freshman makes the stop after a short game.
10:04Such a great job by the defense, winning on early downs.
10:07What does that mean?
10:07Now it means third one.
10:08Third and long now go to dime packages, to nickel packages.
10:12I'm taking linebackers off the field and bringing on DBs to really cover more guys and have more speed on the feet.
10:18Bring him the heat.
10:20And here comes the heat and they get a hole and they get him at the 21.
10:25Well, I think one of the biggest reasons why this team is finding themselves in a hole here in the first half is that this has been a sack party.
10:31They can't keep the defense off of their quarterback.
10:34They haven't been able to get the ball deep down the field, throwing it with the consistency they want because they can't keep their quarterback standing up straight.
10:41The Tar Heels will send out the punt unit.
10:48This will be the second time they've had to kick it away.
10:51Looks it all the way in and now turns his attention up field.
11:01And the punt team able to swing him to the ground.
11:05North Carolina State has it back in the offense, headed to the field.
11:08And he put two touchdowns on the board in the early goalie.
11:12Turning it off!
11:14And they explode on that one and they've got it down to the 22.
11:20Man, that is so tough.
11:21When you play defense, you get your eyes on your keys and you've got to read them.
11:24But sometimes they lie to you and you can see the little misdirection by this offense.
11:29Fooled the defense, created some space.
11:31The offense took advantage and made a huge throw.
11:34Looking for a man.
11:36It's Bailey.
11:36Fires toward the end zone.
11:40And it's caught!
11:42Pops down, Wolfpack!
11:45They are absolutely boat racing this team right now.
11:48We're not even at the second quarter yet.
11:50This offense has been up and down the field.
11:53They've taken a huge lead early.
11:55Everything they're dialing up, David, is working.
11:58Yeah, so I'm going to flip this to the other side.
12:00I'm going to need my offense to score some points.
12:02And let's hold on just a minute here
12:05as the officials are going to have a second look.
12:22So the officials take a closer look
12:25and the replay booth will overturn the call.
12:28They're dealing with a second and long.
12:38Wants to go up top.
12:41Unloads to the wideout.
12:42He's got his man on the right.
12:44That throw and catch gets him down to the six
12:47and the defense is running out of answers.
12:49Now, I think this receiver's forte is his route running.
12:53He's a guy that can line up all over the field,
12:55but it's not just catching post routes and goes.
12:58This guy can run shallows.
13:00He can run slants.
13:01He can run the option routes and find soft spots.
13:05Touchdown, NC State!
13:07Grab the short pass to flip the six on the wall.
13:09This offense is looking ridiculous.
13:23Three touchdowns now in the first quarter,
13:25doing whatever they want at will.
13:28I don't know if you're panicking, Palmer,
13:29but, I mean, they've got to put something together
13:31on the other side of the field
13:32or else this one's going to get ugly fat.
13:34One thing I know, David, is the defensive staff,
13:37after having the ball just run down their throat
13:39and throwing it over their heads,
13:41they need to make some adjustments
13:42earlier than they probably anticipated
13:45because right now they have no answers for this offense.
13:50Now, the challenge here, they've taken a punch,
13:53but they can't let it get out of hand
13:55as we start the second.
13:56Kicker has everything lined up
13:58and about set to get this one underway.
14:04It's definitely too early to panic,
14:33but there's some bad feelings going on
14:35for this offense right now.
14:36You're way down on the scoreboard.
14:37I know we're still in the first half,
14:39but after that last play, it's pretty obvious.
14:42You can't run the ball.
14:43You're becoming a one-dimensional offense
14:45at a time when you need to be able to score some points.
14:49And the pressure was too much.
14:52They get him at the 15.
14:54What a great job by this defense,
14:56setting the tone early.
14:58In the first half,
14:59they've been hitting the quarterback early and often.
15:01make him feel uncomfortable,
15:03make him feel that pressure,
15:04and keep getting him on the ground.
15:05That's why they've built a lead.
15:07Now a lot of work to do to move the chains,
15:17keep this drive alive after that earlier sack.
15:21On third and long,
15:23he'll need to loosen up that arm.
15:25He lofts it high and deep down the left side.
15:28Oh, he had it.
15:30The deep ball was there,
15:31and it just trickled through his fingers.
15:33And the Tar Heels will punt it away on fourth down.
15:37Three and out,
15:38and not much choice but to get rid of the ball.
15:43Makes the catch,
15:44and now looking for just a little bit of daylight.
15:48He's brought down,
15:49but a really solid effort
15:50to pick up every bit of yardage he could
15:52on the punt return.
15:53Quarterback making checks.
16:11Off play action on first down.
16:15That's caught.
16:16It's Anderson.
16:18Bites a crease at the 20.
16:19And he just kept running,
16:22and he ran away from the crowd,
16:24and he'll take it in.
16:26Touchdown, North Carolina State.
16:29And this crowd was already jacked up.
16:31They were already excited.
16:33They were already making a difference
16:34in this football game,
16:35and the offense continues to pile on
16:38and give them something to cheer about.
16:4027-0 here in the first half.
16:43This has been all home team.
16:49They'll try to add another to their lead.
16:54And the extra point makes it 28-0.
16:59That's the kind of drive everybody loves.
17:01OC, quarterback, one step,
17:04put it in the end zone.
17:10He'll bring it back from inside his spot.
17:13And they'll bring him down
17:15to get the offense started on the next drive.
17:17opening play of this drive
17:20comes from the 12-yard line.
17:27And some room to work.
17:29And he'll pick up one.
17:31It brings up second and nine.
17:40Gets the back moving.
17:42Lopez wants to fire.
17:44Just a little bit too much juice on that one
17:48as the freshman was taking a shot.
17:51The offense just has not been able
17:52to find a way to get their rhythm going here
17:55in the first half.
17:56We just haven't seen it in the passing game.
17:58That was a really good example of it again.
18:00If they're going to score more...
18:01He hurls one deep down the left side.
18:05And that one's incomplete.
18:07They were just trying to move the chains.
18:09They were trying to move the scoreboard instead.
18:11It's fourth down.
18:13The Tar Heels will line up to punt it away.
18:29Touchdown!
18:29Wolfpack!
18:31Steven, you'll score on special team!
18:34He did that one all by himself.
18:37Make a few guys miss.
18:39Turn on the afterburns.
18:41And boom!
18:42Everybody's toast.
18:43And that's why you got him back deep.
18:45Because that guy can do that.
18:46You've got to be explosive and quick
18:48and have good vision.
18:49And you see all those things
18:51on one punt return.
18:52Takes it back to the house.
18:54Makes people miss.
18:55Turn it on the gas.
18:56Great job.
18:57Great return.
18:57And he'll just take a knee
19:00and this drive will start at the 25.
19:04The drive starts from their own 25-yard line.
19:13They'll start this drive going to the air.
19:16Got it in the middle.
19:17It's green.
19:18And the defense settled in
19:20to stop that one for a short game.
19:22I think really good wide receivers
19:24do a good job of making every route
19:27kind of look the same.
19:28You can tell.
19:29This looked like a vertical route.
19:31So if I'm a DB, I'm bailing.
19:32And all of a sudden,
19:33he sits that hitch down.
19:34Nice job by the wide receiver
19:35creating enough separation
19:37to create a positive game.
19:39Nice job by the receiver
19:40on the in route there.
19:41And how about the speed?
19:42After he made his break,
19:43he was able to actually
19:44separate a little bit from the DB,
19:46helping out his QB on that one.
19:47rushes on him.
19:50Guard in the backfield.
19:52It's gone.
19:53Again, this is a running back
19:55that can hurt you running it
19:56between the tackles
19:57and he's dangerous out in space.
19:59They like to throw it to him
20:00out on the perimeter
20:01as he picks up a couple yards there.
20:04Let's go.
20:06Wants to throw again.
20:08Here's the heat.
20:09And the quarterback
20:11will take a sack
20:12back in the 36.
20:14How about this defense
20:15in this game so far?
20:17Already five sacks
20:18and we're only in the second quarter.
20:21I think if you're
20:21the offensive coordinator,
20:22you have got to start
20:23mixing up these play calls,
20:25moving the pocket,
20:26get your quarterback
20:27away from danger
20:29because it's obvious.
20:30These offensive line,
20:32they cannot hold up
20:33and they cannot get it done.
20:35Now a lot of work to do
20:37to move the chains,
20:38keep this drive alive
20:39after that earlier sack.
20:43Lopez to pass.
20:46And the defense gets loose,
20:48bringing the heat
20:49and down he goes again.
20:52Man, I think this quarterback
20:53needs to take his offensive line
20:54out for dinners more often
20:56because they're not protecting him.
20:58Sometimes it doesn't even
20:59look like they're trying.
21:01That now the sixth sack
21:03of the game for this defense.
21:08And the Tar Heels
21:12will call on their punt team.
21:15They may have to pay him overtime.
21:16He's punting for the fifth time today.
21:22Nestles it in at the 35.
21:25And the returner goes down.
21:27Down to two minutes
21:28before the half
21:29and they'll take the time out
21:31and see if they can add
21:31a little more before the break.
21:33They take over late
21:36and they have enough time
21:37to put together a drive.
21:42To the air on first down.
21:45Throws to the wideout.
21:47Working that left side.
21:48Hall down.
21:50They'll move the sticks
21:51as he picks up the first down.
21:54Here's this offense
21:55with a fresh set of downs.
22:01Wants to throw on first down.
22:04Fires to the wideout.
22:06And that incomplete pass
22:07caused by the big hit
22:09on first down.
22:10Second down coming.
22:11Well, this offense
22:12has gone his way
22:13early and often in this game.
22:15They've gotten into a nice rhythm.
22:17That time, though,
22:17the defense was expecting
22:18the throw going his way
22:20and they put a really nice
22:21hit on him
22:22to force the incompletion.
22:25They'll go to work
22:26in the air on second down.
22:29Unloads to the wideout.
22:31It's caught downfield.
22:33He works his way in.
22:34Inside the 30 down
22:35to the 29
22:36and picks up a first down.
22:38Man down on the play
22:40as the officials take a break
22:41to let him be checked out.
22:42Wolfpack with a first
22:48and ten here.
22:51Set, set, set.
22:52Ready.
22:54Ready.
23:04Wants to throw.
23:05It's Bailey.
23:09Intercepted.
23:09Big play.
23:10Stops the drive.
23:12Not much on that return,
23:13but I think they'll let him slide
23:15after making that pick
23:16and they'll have it at the 20.
23:32A lot of field in front of them
23:34as they open this possession
23:35from their own 20.
23:36Set, set, set.
23:38Running back,
23:41searching for a hold.
23:42There he goes.
23:44We've got a timeout here
23:45late in the first half
23:46and they'll try to get more points
23:47on the board before the break.
23:49It's got to feel good
23:50as an offense
23:51knowing that early in the drive
23:53you can turn around,
23:54hand it off,
23:55get a push up front
23:56and go get positive yards.
23:59Wide receiver going in motion.
24:04Second down,
24:05they'll go to the air.
24:07Caught in the backfield.
24:08Out, it's Johnson.
24:09He is going nowhere.
24:11Stop at the line of scrimmage.
24:14The Tar Heels are in the hurry up.
24:19In the gun and looking to throw
24:21on third down.
24:23He'll pull it down and run.
24:25He gets the job done
24:26picking up the first down
24:27then getting down.
24:29Offense quick tempo.
24:30Looking to throw on first down.
24:37Got out of trouble and throws.
24:39Pucks it out of the air.
24:41The offense will quickly
24:42use a timeout.
24:44Out routes are very much
24:45about timing.
24:46It's got to be a quick,
24:47decisive movement
24:48from the quarterback.
24:49As soon as he sticks
24:50that foot in the ground,
24:51you know he's breaking out.
24:52Throw it right now
24:53so he can go make you play.
24:54Great pitch, great catch.
24:56A little screen
24:57to the running back.
24:58And a good job
24:59in coverage there
25:00as they stop it
25:01after just a few.
25:03Backed up now.
25:04Here's second and long.
25:05Ready, ready, switch.
25:07Brings up.
25:08Second down.
25:11Lopez wants to fire.
25:15The shorthands.
25:16It's Shipp.
25:17He's into enemy territory
25:19and out of bounds
25:20at the 47.
25:21And the Tar Heels
25:23come to the line
25:24on third and short
25:25trying to convert here.
25:28Wants to throw on third.
25:31Got it in the middle.
25:32It's Johnson.
25:34Now with a great opportunity
25:36as they pick up
25:37the first down.
25:38They've got it at the 40.
25:40Quick timeout from the offense
25:41to save precious seconds.
25:45Looking to throw
25:46on first down.
25:48Catch in the middle.
25:49It's Gause.
25:50They stop him
25:51almost immediately.
25:53Short game there
25:54and still a little
25:54ground to cover
25:55to pick up the first.
25:57Running out of time
25:58here in the first half.
25:59They're going to have
26:00to be efficient
26:00to put some points
26:01on the board
26:01before the break.
26:04Grab near the marker.
26:05It's Johnson.
26:07And he's brought down
26:08after a nice game.
26:10Clock still running.
26:11Almost certainly
26:12the last play of the half.
26:15And he gets to the line
26:16and spikes it
26:17very efficient
26:18and they have a chance
26:19to score
26:19before the break.
26:22And in the waning
26:23seconds of the first half
26:24they'll try to put up
26:25three before going
26:26to the break.
26:27And he'll kick
26:28for the three
26:29from 36 yards
26:30out in the right hatch.
26:32Just drives it
26:34between the uprights.
26:36Let's not say
26:36they cut into
26:37the depth
26:38empty field
26:38or maybe just
26:39mom, they tweaked
26:40a little bit of
26:41their way
26:41with their fingernails.
26:42That's going to wrap up
26:44the first half here
26:45and now we join
26:46Kevin with the
26:46halftime update.
26:48Guys, rivalry games
26:49always bring out
26:50a ton of emotions
26:51and they were on
26:53full display
26:54in that first half.
26:56And talk about
26:57a first half
26:57for the dude
26:58in that backfield.
27:00That coaching staff
27:01has been giving
27:01rave reviews
27:03on a weekly basis
27:04and through two quarters
27:05today
27:06he's been a complete
27:07game changer.
27:08He's breaking
27:09the will
27:10of this defense
27:11and that's something
27:12that's just
27:12very tough
27:13to quantify.
27:15That said,
27:16let's get back
27:17to the field
27:17and our guys
27:18in the booth
27:19to see who comes
27:20out on top
27:20of this rivalry contest.
27:40Kickoff unit
27:41all lined up
27:42and we're ready
27:43to put toe
27:43to leather.
27:51What kind
27:51of field position
27:52can he help
27:53them with
27:53on the return?
27:55And the returner
27:56will be knocked
27:56down.
27:59North Carolina
28:00has it back
28:01in the Tar Heels
28:02so pleased
28:03to send the offense
28:04back out.
28:05Huge deficit
28:06to start this
28:06third quarter
28:07they just need
28:08to find something
28:09to build a little
28:09confidence.
28:10Yeah, it hasn't
28:11gone well.
28:12When you're
28:13trailing by this
28:13much, this first
28:14drive, man,
28:15does everything
28:16matter and hinge
28:17on this because
28:18every possession
28:19in the second half
28:20is going to be
28:20critical.
28:21Yeah, and I think
28:22if you're on offense,
28:23why hold back?
28:24What are you worried
28:24about?
28:25Nothing went well
28:25in the first half
28:26for you and at this
28:27point, trailing by
28:28as much as you are.
28:29Throw caution to the
28:30wind, be aggressive
28:30and let's just see
28:31what happens.
28:32The Tar Heels
28:33will have a first
28:34down.
28:39Passing game
28:40kept this drive
28:41moving.
28:41Let's see if they
28:42try it again.
28:48Coming out on
28:49first down with
28:49the play fake.
28:52Here comes the heat
28:53and the pressure
28:55gets there
28:56and down he goes
28:57at the 18.
28:59Looks as if we have
29:00an injury on that
29:01last play and we'll
29:02take a break to
29:03check him out.
29:10And the Tar Heels
29:11have put themselves
29:12in dire straits
29:13after that last play
29:14at second and a mile.
29:16Johnson looking to
29:18throw.
29:20Got room to work.
29:22How about this
29:23sophomore stopping
29:24him short of the
29:25first down line?
29:26And that's kind of
29:27a lot of today's
29:28running game, right?
29:29Spit the ball out.
29:30Get it to your
29:31playmakers in space.
29:33Get positive yards.
29:34It's instead of
29:35running the ball a
29:36couple yards up the
29:36middle, now you just
29:37spit it out wide and
29:38a lot of times if you
29:39break a few tackles
29:40it could be even
29:40bigger.
29:42And the quarterback
29:43caught up two and
29:44sacked at the 12.
29:47Another sack.
29:48This quarterback group,
29:49not this quarterback,
29:50this one because you're
29:51already on quarterback
29:52number two.
29:53Taking a lot of
29:54hits today.
29:55Got to keep these
29:55guys up right.
29:56Got to protect them.
29:57This offensive line
29:58has to do a better
29:59job.
30:06The Tar Heels will
30:07punt this one away.
30:09They're up to a half
30:10dozen kicks today.
30:17From midfield,
30:18looking for room.
30:20That's a perfect
30:21example of not
30:22settling for a fair
30:23catch.
30:23pick up whatever
30:24yardage you can and
30:25help out the offense.
30:28NC State sending the
30:29offense back onto the
30:30field.
30:32They'll run it from the
30:33gun.
30:34Not much working there.
30:36It'll be second and
30:37nine.
30:38Man, it's really hard to
30:39control the running game
30:40if you don't control the
30:41line of scrimmage.
30:42And how about the
30:43defensive line doing a
30:44great job attacking those
30:45guys up front, not open
30:47up lanes to run through.
30:49Nice job just nullifying
30:50that run altogether.
30:52Throws to the tight end.
30:54And the DB forcing the
30:56incomplete pass with the
30:57deflection.
30:58Well, they're trying to
30:59get the big fella of the
31:00football in the passing
31:01game, but they haven't
31:01been able to do that yet.
31:02He is a really nice
31:03target with his size and
31:05his athleticism.
31:07But him and the QB, they
31:08just don't seem to be on
31:09the same page right now.
31:11Safe completion on the
31:12screen.
31:13He gets it to the 34-yard
31:16line with excellent third
31:17down defense and fourth
31:18down's coming up.
31:20They'll have to settle
31:21for a field goal attempt.
31:23Looks as if this will be
31:24a 51-yard attempt.
31:27Oh, that one will leave
31:28a mark.
31:29No good.
31:31Oh, they missed the
31:32field goal.
31:32That's about the only
31:33thing that hasn't gone
31:34their way in this one.
31:36Man, sometimes I just
31:37feel like fourth down,
31:38man, just go for it
31:39every time.
31:39Like, the field goal
31:41miss, make, rate.
31:42And listen, kickers have
31:43improved the last couple
31:44of years, but you left
31:45some points off the
31:46scoreboard there.
31:47Opening play of this
31:48drive comes from the
31:4934.
31:52Lopez to pass.
31:55Here comes the rush,
31:56and they've got him
31:58wrapped up at the 28.
32:00I'm the offensive
32:01coordinator.
32:01I'm thinking about
32:02chipping this defensive
32:03end with running backs.
32:04I'm leaving my tight ends
32:06in to help this tackle
32:07because we cannot block
32:08him.
32:09He's already got two
32:09sacks.
32:10And the Tar Heels
32:21trying to find their
32:22way forward after the
32:23big loss on the last
32:24play.
32:28Second down, he'll
32:29throw it.
32:30Going to try to pop one
32:31on the screen.
32:32He's brought down, but
32:33there's a flag on the
32:34field.
32:35Let's see which way
32:35that's going to go.
32:38First left foul.
32:40Roughing the pass
32:40after.
32:41Defense.
32:45Just an ill-advised play
32:48by the defender to make
32:49contact with the
32:50quarterback after the
32:51throw, and it cost his
32:53team.
32:53Just couldn't stay off the
32:55quarterback in that
32:56roughing the passer call
32:57has them set up with a
32:58first and ten.
33:02Wants to go up top on
33:04first down.
33:05Caught over the middle.
33:06It's Johnson.
33:07And he was on his way,
33:09and they get him down at
33:10the 30.
33:11I know the offense is
33:12down by a lot here in
33:13the second half.
33:14You just need one big
33:16play, though, to spark
33:17the offense, get the
33:18confidence going.
33:20And they may have found
33:21it right there in that
33:21completion.
33:22Good throw.
33:23Good catch.
33:24Now we've got to keep
33:25it going.
33:26He's going to lose a
33:27yard on that one.
33:29Here's the thing.
33:30I know this guy's not
33:31going to win the
33:31Heisman Trophy, but he's
33:33a pretty talented
33:34football player that's
33:35made big plays for this
33:36offense in the past.
33:37They have not had any
33:38success when they've
33:39given him chances so far
33:41in this game.
33:41In the third quarter,
33:42you're getting a little
33:43nervous, I think, if
33:44you're the head coach
33:45because he's a guy you
33:45need to have success
33:46if you're going to win.
33:48And so many things have
33:50to come together perfectly
33:51for a screen to work
33:52for big yardage.
33:54And they were close.
33:55You could tell that
33:55almost busted, but
33:56they just got wrapped
33:57up, got a little bit
33:58of yardage, but they
33:59really wanted that one
34:00to be a big game.
34:02Going for it all.
34:04And they can't quite
34:06hook up trying to make
34:07a completion in the
34:08back corner of the end
34:09zone.
34:10This offense has had
34:11some struggles early in
34:12this game so far.
34:13They're just trying to
34:14get something going.
34:15And so you take a shot.
34:17You try to find your
34:18best one-on-one matchup
34:19and see if they can make
34:21a play.
34:21The defense was ready for
34:22it.
34:22Good coverage on the
34:23back end.
34:24They look very prepared.
34:26All 11 guys on defense
34:28right now playing
34:28together as one.
34:30And you want a touchdown
34:31and you want to be
34:32aggressive, but man,
34:33right down the middle,
34:34that obviously gives me
34:35some confidence down the
34:37road that I can trust
34:38this guy.
34:39So after putting three
34:40on the board, the
34:41kickoff team is out
34:42there ready to boot it
34:43away.
34:43He'll start the return
34:48inside his spot.
34:50Not a lot of space to be
34:51found.
34:52Good hustle by the
34:53coverage team and they
34:54stop him at the 21.
34:56They come to the line
34:57for the first play of the
34:58drive, snapping it from
34:59the 21.
35:03Back to throw.
35:04It's Bailey.
35:07Fires to the wide
35:08out.
35:10Incomplete.
35:10He had it right in his
35:12hands for the pick and
35:13I believe he might have
35:15been thinking about
35:16those big plays he's
35:17known for.
35:18Instead, it'll be second
35:19down.
35:23Now the play fake.
35:26Fires to the right.
35:28It's complete.
35:30A pickup of eight now to
35:31convert this third and
35:32two.
35:34Trying to pick up a
35:35first down.
35:36They'll try to pick it up
35:43on the ground.
35:45He just needed a yard on
35:47third down and there just
35:48wasn't any room to pick it
35:49up.
35:51Great team defense on that
35:53run play.
35:53Everybody doing their job.
35:55People winning their one
35:56on ones.
35:57D linemen staying in their
35:58gaps.
35:59Linebackers and DBs
36:00filling.
36:01You just can't do it
36:01better.
36:04And that one will bounce
36:05and roll out of bounds.
36:07Let's see exactly where
36:08they mark it.
36:09This drive will get
36:10underway from just inside
36:12the 35 at their own
36:1334.
36:17Here's the handoff.
36:19And this one will be
36:20stopped for no gain.
36:22And just a great job on
36:24the defense being
36:25stout.
36:25That's your job.
36:26Be stout up front.
36:27Stuff in the run play.
36:28Make them get in more
36:29passing situations.
36:30But do not let them run
36:31the football.
36:32That's 101.
36:33Stop the run first.
36:35I'm running out and he
36:36goes down at the 34.
36:40Well this offense keeps
36:41giving up sacks and they
36:42keep finding themselves in
36:43situations like this.
36:44Third and long right now.
36:46They don't have many points
36:47in this game and this is a
36:48big reason why.
36:49It's hard to score if you
36:50don't keep the third down.
36:52It's manageable.
36:52So moving forward,
36:53whether it's running the
36:54football in first and second
36:56or throwing short passes
36:57earlier in the drives,
36:59they've got to change
36:59things up because taking
37:01sacks like this is killing
37:02this offense.
37:04The Tar Heels will bring
37:06the punt team onto the
37:07field.
37:19Excellent coverage and
37:20tackle that time and that's
37:22how the third quarter comes
37:23to a close.
37:24We've reached the brink.
37:26It's NC State on top.
37:28It hasn't been much of a
37:30contest as we take a look at
37:31the overwhelming game stats
37:33through three.
37:39I guess if you're an optimist,
37:41the stage is set for a
37:43massive fourth quarter
37:44comeback.
38:01So first down will open up the
38:03final period.
38:07They'll leave it with him.
38:09Oh, he's got a chance.
38:11Pass the sticks and he may get
38:12more really good job by
38:14everybody.
38:15They're well blocked.
38:16Good run and a first down.
38:18Here's this offense with a
38:20fresh set of downs.
38:22Tight end now in motion.
38:28They'll give it to him again.
38:31They pick up half of it.
38:32It'll be second and five.
38:34And I know you can play these
38:36late game situations
38:37differently, but I love when
38:39you just stay physical.
38:40You run the football, you
38:42preserve the lead, you got
38:43great field position, you're
38:44in a great position to salt
38:46this clock away and get a
38:48W.
38:49Going deep.
38:51Brings it in down the left
38:52side.
38:53Oh, and the defense in chase
38:55mode and they finally get him
38:57down at the 35.
38:59And they've been fun to watch
39:01today, man.
39:02Like, they're staying
39:02aggressive late in the game.
39:04They've built a cushion.
39:05They've built the lead.
39:06But you can just tell the
39:07confidence and the swagger
39:08they have.
39:09They've been able to do
39:10what they want today, take
39:11care of business.
39:12And this is an offense that
39:13I think is going to continue
39:14to grow.
39:15And it slips through his
39:17fingers incomplete.
39:19That would have been a huge
39:20gain if he could have
39:21squeezed it.
39:23I'm a little bit surprised
39:24they're still throwing the
39:25football here this late in
39:26the game with this kind of
39:27lead.
39:27They're on first down, taking
39:28a shot, falls incomplete.
39:30But obviously, they're still
39:31seeing matchups that they
39:32want to take advantage of in
39:33the back end of this defense.
39:35So, they're letting it fly.
39:37He's got it.
39:38Touchdown, Wolfpack.
39:40And once he found open space,
39:42the band might as well start
39:44playing.
39:46Now, they have extended this
39:48lead, guys.
39:49Starting to put the hammer,
39:50but sometimes a rivalry game
39:52can give you a little of
39:53extra fight back.
39:55And there can be no panic at
39:56this point now.
39:57You've worked too hard this
39:58offseason, David.
39:59They've had this game circled
40:01for so long.
40:02You've got to play your best
40:03football right now and fight
40:04back.
40:04And you just need something
40:06good to happen on this next
40:07possession.
40:08You've got to get the crowd
40:09back into this football game.
40:10Big rivalry.
40:12Get some emotion.
40:12Get some momentum on your
40:13side.
40:14And they tacked on the extra
40:16point.
40:19Kickoff unit has been busy as
40:21they have built a big lead,
40:23and they're trying to hold on
40:24to it.
40:24Here he comes from inside his own
40:32five.
40:32He was looking for some running
40:34room, but not much to be found
40:36as he stopped at the 18.
40:39A little bit backed up to start
40:41this drive from their own 18-yard
40:42line.
40:45They'll send the back in motion.
40:47Johnson wants to throw it.
40:49That's caught.
40:52It's Goss.
40:53They'll guide him out of bounds
40:54down at the 25-yard line.
40:57Yeah, and you see running
40:58backs in today's football,
41:00they play a wide receiver
41:01basically for you, but you've
41:02got to find a guy that you can
41:03throw it to, and you know he's
41:05going to catch the ball
41:06consistently.
41:09Looking to fire.
41:10Blast it as he lets it go, and
41:14it'll be incomplete.
41:16This is some physical pass
41:17defense.
41:19Well, a lot of things haven't
41:20gone right for him.
41:21You saw an incompletion right
41:22there.
41:23It's been offense.
41:24It's been defense.
41:24They just haven't been able to
41:26click and get into a rhythm
41:27here, and now they're playing
41:29catch-up, and you know they're
41:30going to be throwing at each
41:30and every play here in the
41:31fourth quarter.
41:32He'll make a play on third
41:34down.
41:35He's got enough for the first
41:36as they mark it at the 32.
41:40He wants to keep it in the
41:41air.
41:42Under fire.
41:44Rush coming in high, and
41:46they've got him at the 29.
41:49You've got to love what you're
41:50seeing if you're the head
41:51coach of this team, because
41:52your defense is simply not
41:54resting on their laurels, and
41:55they're playing until their
41:56zero's on the clock.
41:57They've got a massive lead.
41:59We're late in the fourth
42:00quarter, and they're still
42:01getting sacks.
42:10And the Tar Heels, with a
42:12long way to go after the loss
42:14on the last play.
42:17Leaves it with the back.
42:20Couldn't find a lane, a
42:21pickup of one to the 31.
42:24And man, the big fellas up
42:26front, they don't get a lot
42:27of credit.
42:27They don't get talked about
42:28a lot, unless it's negative,
42:29but they're the big component,
42:31man.
42:31They've got to get some push to
42:32get some running lanes, get
42:34this running game going.
42:35They're the ones that make it
42:36go.
42:37Working that left side now.
42:40He'll have enough for the
42:41first down, and they stop him
42:42at the 45.
42:44After giving up a few extra
42:46yards after a hitch throw, I
42:48wonder if this defense is
42:49going to want to give this
42:50guy this much access moving
42:51forward.
42:52They might be thinking about
42:53more press coverage, or
42:54playing some zone coverage
42:55where the corner's right up
42:57over.
42:58Very little running room,
43:00if any, and he just hasn't
43:01had anywhere to go in this
43:03one.
43:04The Tar Heels now with a long
43:06way to go to pick up the
43:08first down.
43:08The safe call of the wide
43:11receiver screen, and just a
43:13short, safe pass play to pick
43:15up a few.
43:17Already two for two on third
43:19down, but this time they'll need
43:20nine to convert.
43:25Johnson looking to throw.
43:28Grabs it in the middle.
43:29Couldn't ask for much more
43:31there.
43:31A first down, and they're down to
43:32the 42.
43:33Nice job by the quarterback,
43:36pre-snap and post-snap.
43:37He knew the defense was going to
43:39be playing zone coverage, and
43:40there was no doubt in his mind
43:42where he was going with that
43:43football.
43:44Two minutes now left in this
43:46one, and time is running short
43:48if they want to find a way to
43:49pull this one out.
43:51And the Tar Heels will snap it
43:52on first and ten.
43:56Looking downfield on first down.
43:57Incomplete.
44:01He had to get rid of it before
44:02he wanted to.
44:03The defense put the heat on.
44:06Well, at this point, you're still
44:06trying to throw stuff up against
44:08the blackboard and see if it
44:09sticks.
44:09You're down by a lot of points,
44:11so why not try it, right?
44:12And give the offense credit.
44:14You know, you're not just going to
44:15run the football.
44:15You're not just going to take it.
44:16He lobs one high down the left
44:19side.
44:20He's got it.
44:20And he'll take it in for the
44:22touchdown.
44:23It won't have much impact on the
44:25outcome of the game, but it is a
44:26fabulous parting game.
44:27The consolation prize, if you will.
44:30Well, it's good to finally see
44:32this offense have a little bit of
44:34success because that has not been
44:35the case in this game.
44:37Nothing has gone their way.
44:38They keep shooting themselves.
44:40The extra point is blocked.
44:42He's got a chance to take this one
44:43back.
44:45So a drive there of 85 yards.
44:48And the finisher coming on that
44:5042-yard touchdown toss.
44:55The kickoff unit is out there, and
44:57boy, did that last drive quiet this
44:59crowd.
45:03On the move from inside is five.
45:08Able to find enough room to get it
45:10out across the 25.
45:11He's brought down at the 26.
45:14North Carolina State has it back in
45:16the offense, headed to the field.
45:18And now one of the most satisfying
45:20moments in football, just watching
45:22that clock drain away while you have
45:24control of the ball, Jesse.
45:25And this is definitely one of the
45:26best play callers, right, for an
45:28offensive coordinator getting ready to
45:29go into victory.
45:30Makes to grab down the left side.
45:33Open spaces.
45:34And they're going to score again.
45:36Yet another touchdown as they just
45:38add their total.
45:39pure domination all game long for this
45:43offense.
45:43Whether they've been running the
45:44football, whether they've been
45:45throwing the football, critical down
45:47in distances, situationally all up and
45:50down the field.
45:51This defense has had no answer for
45:54these guys.
45:54What an impressive performance by the O.
45:56On the run from inside his own five.
46:05Nice job by the kickoff team.
46:07Everybody's stayed in their lanes and
46:09they'll stop him at the 16.
46:11A lot of work to do as this drive will
46:13start from the 16-yard line.
46:17Used to play fake.
46:18Now to throw.
46:18Going to try to get it himself.
46:23Oh, he's got some space.
46:27He'll be forced out of bounds.
46:28He'll mark him down at the 44-yard line
46:31and this offense has it going.
46:34Cranking up a drive like that can
46:35really get you going.
46:37It's first down from the 44.
46:40Johnson wants to throw it.
46:43That's caught.
46:44It's Johnson.
46:45And this offense is going to have to
46:47find more explosive plays.
46:48And it can't just rely on the dink and dunk.
46:51It's going to have to find itself
46:52and score more points.
46:53And listen, they got beat up today.
46:55But moving on in the future,
46:56they've got some good pieces.
46:57They've got to find a way to fit them together
46:59and create some explosive plays
47:01on this offense because today
47:02they've been lacking.
47:03They run him out of bounds.
47:05He gets it to the 47.
47:07The Tar Heels are at the line
47:09looking to convert on third and short.
47:15He'll keep it himself.
47:17That play just got wrecked.
47:20Third and one and they went backwards.
47:23Timeout call by the defense
47:25is their first of the half
47:26as they'll make some adjustments.
47:29And the Tar Heels line up
47:31and let it away.
47:32Wouldn't call it a shank,
47:38but I don't think he'll include it
47:40on his greatest hits.
47:44NC State sending the offense
47:46back onto the field.
47:48This is quickly turning into a celebration,
47:51Jesse, as they've taken control of this game.
47:53And they should feel good about how they played.
47:55They knew they had to come in here,
47:56protect home turf.
47:58They've gone out.
47:59They've run it well.
47:59They've thrown it well, David.
48:01Really, so much that this coaching staff
48:03could be happy.
48:04Yeah, and now it's about stat padding.
48:06Right?
48:06Like you could just put up more numbers.
48:08You know this game's pretty good.
48:10Don't turn it over.
48:10Don't make a mistake.
48:11But this game is well in hand.
48:13Off play action.
48:25Looking down the middle.
48:27Got him, and nobody's close.
48:29Lots of green grass as he gets into the 31.
48:33You know, there are probably a lot of coaches
48:35out there with a lead like this
48:37that would like to run the ball
48:38and see if they could ice this game
48:40and bleed the clock.
48:41Not this coaching staff.
48:42They are going to be aggressive.
48:44They are going to continue taking shots.
48:54Off the play fake on first down.
48:56To throw.
48:57Looking left.
48:59A strike downfield.
49:01And they're going to put another one
49:03into the end zone
49:04as they just keep piling cords on the scoreboard.
49:07Man, you knew this one was over already,
49:10but how about an exclamation point to go with it?
49:13Another score for this offense.
49:15They've had themselves a great day,
49:17and the stats just continue to pile up.
49:19Lining up to attack one more onto that lead.
49:33Lining up to attack one more onto that lead.
49:38And he knocked that one right down the middle.
49:41Quick strike offense on that three-play scoring drive.
49:44Kickoff unit on the field,
49:46and this defense will be called on
49:48to protect this lead.
49:55He'll bring it out from inside his own tent.
49:58He was hoping for something a little more dynamic
50:00that they get him on the ground at the 20.
50:03They'll snap it from the 20
50:05for the opening play of this drive.
50:07Johnson looking to throw.
50:10And he's all bottled up,
50:11and now it's worse.
50:12The ball's loose.
50:14They recover their own fumble.
50:16Somehow, who knows how they got that thing back.
50:20Great job by the defense forcing the fumble,
50:22but a bad, unfortunate bounce.
50:25The offense pounces back on it.
50:26The Tar Heels have put themselves in dire straits
50:38after that last play.
50:39It's second and a mile.
50:41Back to pass.
50:43Stagged out of the air.
50:45And good coverage by the defense.
50:47Just a short game.
50:48There's a long and storied history
50:54of great games between these two rivals,
50:57and this chapter adds another to that legacy.
51:00Really impressed by the poise
51:02and by the winning team as well here.
51:04They weren't overhyped in this game.
51:05They came out.
51:06They looked prepared.
51:07They were calm.
51:09Definitely confident.
51:10David, they were able to go out
51:11and execute well enough to get this win.
51:13And it's hard.
51:14In these rivalry games,
51:15with all the emotions running so deep,
51:17like you sometimes get overzealous.
51:20Sometimes you get too many penalties.
51:21It's hard to rein in your emotions,
51:23but they did.
51:23They kept it in check,
51:24and now, bragging rights for the whole year.
51:27Thanks so much for spending some time with us.
51:29For David Pollack and Jesse Palmer,
51:31I'm Reece Davis,
51:32and this has been another presentation.
