From your grandma's old advice to the popular health tips you see online, a lot of what we think we know about our bodies is wrong. Charles and Sophia debunk two of the most common health myths: that cracking your knuckles causes arthritis and that you lose most of your body heat through your head.

00:00Today we're talking about two of the most common health myths that you've probably heard your
00:12whole life. The first one is a big one. Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis? I'm
00:16guilty of this one, Sophia. I can't stop. And my mom always told me that I was going to get
00:21arthritis. But is it true? It's a common misconception, but the truth is, it's a myth.
00:25The crack you hear is just a gas bubble of nitrogen and carbon dioxide popping in your
00:30joints' synovial fluid. There's no medical evidence that it causes arthritis. So my mom
00:35was wrong all this time. I have a lot of limited knowledge on the human body, but I guess it's
00:39a good feeling to know that I'm not damaging myself. That's right. The only thing you're
00:43at risk of is annoying the person next to you. That's a huge relief. So what's the next myth?
00:47The next one is a very popular winter myth. You lose most of your body heat through your
00:52head. This one is especially pervasive. I've heard that since I was a kid.
00:55My dad would always say, put on a hat. You lose 80% of your body heat through your head.
01:00Is he wrong too? Well, this one is a bit more nuanced. The myth actually comes from a flawed
01:04U.S. Army study where soldiers were clothed in winter gear, but weren't given hats. So
01:09naturally, the most exposed part of their body was the part that was losing the most heat.
01:14So it was just a matter of what was exposed. Exactly. The truth is, you lose heat proportionally
01:18to the amount of skin that is exposed. If you're wearing a t-shirt and it's cold, you'll lose
01:23most of your body heat through your torso, not your head. So it's just a common sense
01:27thing. It is. But the myth has been so powerful that it's just become a part of our culture.
01:32So if you're cold, you should put on a hat, a scarf, and gloves. You know, cover up all
01:36the exposed skin. That's the real truth. So we've covered two of the most common health
01:40myths. It's a good reminder that we should always question what we hear. It sure is.
01:44So thank you for being with us today. My pleasure.
