00:00The truth and trends. I'm Sophia, and with me is Charles. Today we're talking about a very short
00:13and very interesting story, the hidden tunnels of Los Angeles. Beneath the busy streets of
00:18downtown LA lies a network of secret tunnels that were used during a very specific time in our
00:22history. This is a great topic, Sophia. I love a good hidden history story. So what were these
00:27tunnels used for? Well, a lot of them were used during Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. They were
00:33used to move liquor and money to and from secret speakeasies. So it was a whole underground highway
00:38for criminals? Yes. The police were trying to crack down on the illegal alcohol trade, so the
00:43criminals would use the tunnels to move their goods without being seen. That's a great example of a
00:47city's criminal past. Yes, and a lot of them were used for speakeasies themselves. So you could go
00:53into a secret door on the street and go down a flight of stairs and find yourself in a huge party
00:58with music and dancing. So it was a party you couldn't see from the street? Exactly. And what
01:03are they used for now? Are they still there? A lot of them are still there. Some are used for modern
01:08infrastructure, like utilities and fiber optics. But a lot of them are just closed off and forgotten.
01:13So there's a whole history beneath our feet that we just don't know about. That's the big takeaway.
01:18A lot of the cities that we live in have a secret history that's just waiting to be discovered.
01:22It's a great little story. It is. So Sophia, it feels like we've covered the most interesting
01:26aspects of the story. We have. So thank you for being with us today. My pleasure.
