00:00what studio i'm charles and with me is sophia today we're taking a look at a political decision
00:13that has had a huge impact on our country the push for electric vehicles but what are the
00:18unintended consequences i've been doing some research on this and it seems like we have a
00:23lot of problems to solve you're right charles while the push for evs is a noble goal the reality
00:27is that the infrastructure isn't ready a lot of people have range anxiety which is the fear that
00:32they won't be able to find a charging station when they need one and that's a very real problem
00:36and it's not just the charging stations it's the power grid a lot of experts are saying that our
00:42power grid isn't ready for the massive increase in demand that's coming from all of these electric
00:47vehicles so we're talking about a political decision that was made without a lot of practical planning
00:51it seems that way and it's also a decision that has a huge environmental cost i'm not an expert on
00:55this but i've read about the mining of lithium and cobalt which are the main components of a battery
01:01is that an issue it's a huge issue a lot of the mining for these minerals is done in countries with
01:07very loose environmental and labor laws so while we're trying to solve one environmental problem
01:11with evs we may be creating another one with mining so there's a huge ethical and environmental cost
01:18yes and we're also not doing a great job of recycling these batteries so what are some of the
01:22practical suggestions that are being put forth well a lot of experts are saying that we need to
01:26focus on building a more robust and more reliable charging infrastructure and what about the power
01:30grid we need to invest in new power generation like solar and wind and we need to create a more
01:35decentralized power grid so it's a matter of planning and investing so charles it feels like
01:40we've covered the most important aspects of this issue it's a very difficult conversation but it's
01:44one that we all need to be having it is so thank you for being with us today my pleasure
