Parents petition to expand childcare subsidies to include grandparents

Working parents are advocating for the subsidies to be made available for private care options, including in the remuneration of grandparents, nannies, and au pairs.

00:00A Change.org petition has been started to lobby the federal government to allow

00:04childcare subsidies to be used for broader care options. A group known as

00:09For Parents AU began the petition in July 2025 and within a few weeks it had

00:14more than 12,000 signatories. Working parents are advocating for the

00:19subsidies to be made available for private care options including in the

00:24remuneration of grandparents, nannies and au pairs. It's especially an issue

00:29facing families in vast childcare deserts where options for daytime minding is

00:34limited and where co-working spaces are not available. Currently the federal

00:39government subsidy can only be used at approved federal government child care

00:44services.
