00:00faith thrives on tests faith grows in the soil of difficulty
00:12faith needs to pass the test in order to become true faith
00:17grace and peace to you all in the mighty name of jesus christ as we're ready to listen to god's
00:32word let us pray lord jesus christ we thank you for your living word we pray that your word will be
00:43alive within our hearts today and that you will strengthen us equip us in jesus name we pray amen
00:56if you have your bible with you we're going to turn to the gospel of mark and chapter 2. we're just
01:04going to join jesus here for this event where he met a paralytic man in capernaum verse 1 and again
01:18he entered capernaum after some days and it was heard that he was in the house immediately many
01:29gathered together so that there was no longer room to receive them not even near the door and he preached
01:38the word to them now i'm just going to pause there for a moment let's just set the context first
01:49it tells us here that jesus entered capernaum again after some days what had been happening during these
02:00days well we can quickly read in the chapter before at the end of chapter 1 that jesus when he was moved
02:06with compassion stretched out his hand and touched a leper who was cleansed and jesus actually
02:15warned the former leper and said to him this is in verse 44 of chapter 1 see that you say nothing to
02:25anyone but go your way show yourself to the priest and offer for the cleansing those things which moses
02:31commanded as a testimony to them however he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the
02:39the matter so that jesus could no longer openly into the city but was outside in deserted places and they
02:48came to him from every direction so we can understand there that after a time when jesus was in a deserted
03:00place to be away from the crowds who were trying to crowd in and find him having heard
03:09about this miracle of the leper being cleansed jesus entered the town again he came to capernaum
03:18and he was in a particular house and the message got around that hey jesus is here this is the man
03:24who cleansed the leper and it tells us clearly there that so many immediately gathered there was no room
03:34to receive them to receive them not even near the door and we just want to pause there and think
03:42what is it that jesus first did it tells us clearly he preached the word to them
03:51now of all the things that jesus could have done meeting this crowd who were desperate to see him who'd
04:01heard about the miracle and i don't know what kind of crowd it was how many different needs there were
04:06but they'd come because of the reputation caused by this amazing miracle of the cleansed leper jesus could
04:15have been anxious about meeting so many people he could have wanted to advertise himself to display himself
04:24to talk about his own credentials there's lots of things you might think jesus could have done
04:30but what he did he preached the word to them because they needed to hear the word of god i don't know
04:43what kind of need you have come with today it could be a physical need it could be a need for breakthrough
04:51it could be a need for deliverance it could be all kinds of things or perhaps you're just joining the
04:57service for some spiritual encouragement just as it was then so it is now we need to receive the word of
05:07god so tell your neighbor i need to hear the word i need to hear the word jesus preached the word of god to
05:22them now this reminded me of an occasion a little earlier i think and we read about it in matthew chapter 5
05:32and verse 1 and it tells us this seeing the multitudes this is talking about jesus he went up on a mountain
05:44and when he was seated his disciples came to him then he opened his mouth and taught them
05:50him saying blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven etc and it's what's become
06:00known as the sermon on the mount jesus saw all these multitudes following him and what was his first response
06:10it was to teach them the word of god because the word of god is eternal the word of god
06:19has the power to transform and to change anything else by comparison is temporary and even thinking
06:29about that sermon when he saw the multitudes there that he preached if we look now back in history
06:36that is a message that has changed the world it's changed whole continents whole countries it's transformed
06:44many different civilizations that message of blessed are the poor in spirit blessed are those who mourn blessed
06:52are the meek because the word of god has that power within it to use a very simple illustration
07:02suppose on coming today you really needed an apple to eat
07:08we could give you an apple and you could eat it and once it's finished it's finished or perhaps
07:18afterwards you could forget about it and leave it and it would go bad but by comparison just suppose
07:24that you received the seed of an apple tree which was planted in good fertile soil
07:34and thereafter grew and produced dozens of apples every year from that one tiny seed you would have
07:47something with life in it to reproduce and to continue providing for your needs day after day month after
07:55month year after year it wouldn't just be a single thing that you receive and consume and then you
08:04go on and need another thing and the word of god is like a seed many of jesus parables talked about
08:14the seed as being the word of god there's the parable of the sower there's the parable of the kingdom of
08:19god where he says it's like a small mustard seed but when it's planted and grows it becomes the biggest of
08:27trees and that power is in the word of god it is like a seed and if that seed is planted in your heart
08:40and your heart is ready to receive and to respond and to obey that word then you will be like a tree
08:50that's planted by the water that's planted by the waters you will have what you need all the time it's
08:55not a temporary solution it's a permanent solution so we need the word of god we need the word of god also
09:06because frankly we're living in a world of falsehood and we need the truth
09:14because it has become epidemic it has become normal for there to be falsehood in the world around us
09:24the world in which we live what does the bible say in psalm 12 verse 2 it says every man lies to his
09:33neighbor they speak with deceit and this has become customary in the news that we listen to
09:43the politics the work conversations you name the kind of interactions that we have it has become normal
09:55to be untruthful normal to live for presentation in terms of what people see and what people think
10:05rather than what is real and what is in the heart and the word of god is truth the word needs to be received
10:18into our hearts and come to dominate us so that we recognize the world of falsehood in which we live
10:28we need the word of god so jesus as we read in mark chapter 2 at the beginning there the first thing he
10:38did he came into this crowded room where the people had gathered because of the miracle and he preached
10:45the word to them now let's continue on the next couple of verses mark chapter 2 and read verse 3
10:54it says then they came to him bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men
11:04and when they could not come near him because of the crowd they uncovered the roof where he was
11:11so when they'd broken through they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying when jesus saw their
11:19faith he said to the paralytic and i'm going to pause there because we're going to move on in a moment
11:29to what jesus said but first i just want us to briefly consider the faith of these four men because it tells us
11:37in verse five jesus saw their faith that is a great encouragement to us it doesn't say jesus saw their need
11:54jesus i'm sure did see their need in a deeper way that they could see it themselves he saw their faith
12:03and how was their faith expressed well they could have so easily given up if their faith had been
12:14based on the circumstances if they had just simply thought well this sounds like an interesting thing
12:22let's go and see what will happen if we go to this house we've heard this jesus is there let's go and see
12:28let's let's find out but they'd found there was a big crowd and they couldn't go in they could have
12:33simply said without any conviction they could have said well it's not our time there's too many people
12:40here let's come back another day let's go and see someone else let's wait for the next story but no
12:47faith thrives on tests faith grows in the soil of difficulty faith needs to pass the test in order to become
13:05true faith and here was a test of faith for them it seemed there was no way through
13:11but faith found a way through and jesus saw their faith now i want to encourage us that today
13:25it is no different jesus christ today will see your faith he'll see my faith he'll see our faith that's
13:34our connection to jesus and i just want to think for a moment to compare where we are today with those
13:44people who were in that room in capernaum two thousand years ago they were there in a physical
13:51location because jesus was there and we could feel envious of them well if only i was alive in those days
13:59and i could have met jesus face to face and jesus himself could have commanded my sickness to leave
14:08could have spoken calmness to my storm delivered me from my demons we could think if only we were in
14:16that situation but let's think another way there are actually great advantages living in the time in which
14:26we live now firstly jesus can be in all places at all times by his holy spirit just think about that for a
14:40moment he was in the moment he was in a house in capernaum perhaps in those days you would have been in
14:46another city another country another continent you wouldn't have had that opportunity to meet him
14:51but today by his holy spirit jesus can do even more than he could do then because he can be in all places
15:05at all times by his holy spirit so jesus is closer to you now than he was to the paralytic man that we've
15:18read about 2000 years ago because jesus sees your faith and your connection is your faith
15:27your connection to this service from a practical point of view may be through
15:32airtel or vodacom or the wi-fi in your house or or wherever it might be and that might be unreliable
15:39that's your connection to this event to this service your connection to jesus is faith
15:50and no network breaking can break that connection we've even received testimonies from people who
15:59were just about to join the prayer with brother chris and their network fell it broke but they still
16:05received because faith was their connection and jesus will see today your faith it's of secondary
16:16importance whether he sees you in this service or whether the network has problems it's good and it's
16:26useful to be useful to be here but jesus sees your faith that is your connection with jesus christ and there's another
16:36great advantage that we have today we are on the other side of easter sunday jesus christ subsequent to what we've read
16:49here was crucified and died for our sins and rose again and we are saved we are taught in the bible we are
17:02saved by having faith in our heart that god raised jesus from the dead so that's another advantage we have
17:12today we have an even greater foundation for our faith jesus has risen from the dead he is alive today he is
17:22just as alive now as he was then and he has conquered the final enemy death so just supposing that you may
17:34have thought in those days well he cleansed the leper he's going to do something for this paralytic but my
17:42problem that's too great we can know today jesus has defeated death there is no problem that is too great
17:50for jesus christ satan threw everything he had at jesus jesus overcame and up from the grave he arose
18:02so today we have that advantage as well i want to move on to where i stopped in the middle of the verse
18:11verse 5 he saw their faith and he said to the paralytic he said rise up and walk ah let me check
18:22that comes later he didn't
18:24they were no doubt expecting him to say that he'd heard about the leper being cleansed
18:34and how just with a word from jesus christ he was cleansed but in this case we read clearly jesus saw
18:43their faith and he said to the paralytic son your sins are forgiven you sin is the sickness of the soul
18:57we need healing from sin more than we need healing from a physical problem
19:09or any other of the physical needs that we're coming to see god meet when jesus said to that paralytic son
19:21your sins are forgiven he provided the permanent solution to his problems
19:30because let's just think about this a moment
19:33let's just compare
19:35the effect
19:37of sickness in the body this man had a terrible sickness he was paralyzed
19:42but let's just compare that for a moment
19:46with the effect of sin
19:48in the soul what does the bible say the bible says that our sins have separated us from god
19:56it doesn't say
19:58that our sickness or our weak body has separated us from god
20:03as prophet tb joshua often used to remind us
20:07you can be sick in body and still be a friend of god and still be a candidate of heaven
20:14what separates us from god is sin
20:18so when jesus said your sins are forgiven
20:24that was a solution which brought this man into a relationship with god
20:30and that's the other comparison here the relationship with god is eternal
20:41it's something which will outlast this body and if you just think about it for a moment how many
20:47years do we have on this earth it varies doesn't it it may be 40 50 60 70 80 it may even get up to 90
20:54or something like that but if you compare that to eternity millions and millions and millions of
21:00years measured in our time it is but a small period and we don't take our physical body with us into
21:12eternity so this man his paralyzed body even if it hadn't been healed would not follow him
21:19into eternity but his relationship with god would because the real healing is forgiveness of sin
21:31so whatever need you've got today you've got a greater need
21:35your greater need is to have your relationship with god restored to have your sins forgiven
21:42and to have the power of the resurrected christ in your life to say no to sin in the future
21:54then your eternity is settled when jesus said your sins are forgiven you
22:02it could have ended there and the man had what he needed you can take that away and thank you jesus
22:12i have what i need this is due to the supreme sacrifice of christ i'm now given the chance to have a
22:22relationship with god just as if i'd never sinned what an amazing thing but let's read on now to the final
22:33part of our reading today and it's in mark chapter 2 and we'll read from verse 6 and some of the scribes
22:43were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts why does this man speak blasphemies like this
22:50who can forgive sins but god alone but immediately when jesus perceived in his spirit that they reasoned
22:59thus within themselves he said to them why do you reason about these things in your hearts which is
23:06easier to say to the paralytic your sins are forgiven you or to say arise take up your bed and walk but that you
23:17know that the son of man has power on earth to forgive sins he said to the paralytic i say to you arise
23:27take up your bed and go to your house immediately he arose took up the bed and went out in the presence of
23:37them all so that all were amazed and glorified god saying we never saw anything like this
23:47this this is a very interesting scripture what we understand in this case was that jesus healing of the man
23:59as far as the man was concerned i might almost call it a bonus he had his needs met when his sins were
24:08forgiven but jesus was concerned that the people should know the power that he had to forgive sins
24:21he was concerned for the glory of god and it was for the glory of god that he said to the man
24:31rise up and walk and he was healed and i think there's a lesson for us here our healing
24:43has more to do with the glory of god than it has to do with our present comfort yes god loves us and he
24:55will give us some of the comforts that we need during this life on this earth but the primary focus
25:03and the primary focus with jesus here with this healing was the glory of god what does it say after the
25:12man was healed it says all were amazed and they glorified god and the people who needed to know
25:23that jesus had this power to forgive sins they saw the evidence so i want to encourage us to consider the glory of god
25:35let us pray for the name of jesus to be glorified let's ask god to give us the grace not just to seek
25:45solution solution because of the benefit that it brings to us but rather to seek the glory of god
25:56what did jesus say seek first the kingdom of god and all of these things will be added
26:02let us turn our hearts to his glory and pray lord be glorified in my life be glorified in my faith in the
26:18midst of a difficult situation and be glorified in my miraculous release from that situation it's both
26:28things that can glorify god the glory of god sometimes coincides with our own comfort and it sometimes
26:38does not let us seek that jesus may be glorified knowing that our real need has been met he said to me he said
26:51to you he's saying to you now your sins are forgiven come give your whole heart to me and i will empower
27:01you to live above sin in jesus name
27:12you
27:31you
