Endangered turtle that was rescued from the cold returns to the wild

Elton, a Kemp's ridley sea turtle that was found cold-stunned on a Massachusetts beach in 2024, swam back out into the Atlantic off the coast of New York on Aug. 6.

00:03Love it. This morning we're getting a look at a special moment that unfolded this week along the New York City coast.

00:14Onlookers cheered as a rehabilitated sea turtle named L.N. made his way back into the Atlantic just off Coney Island.

00:22The young Kemp's Ridley, one of the world's most endangered sea turtles, was found cold stunned last winter

00:28and cared for by the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.

00:32Youth from the New York Aquarium looked on and were joined by state and environmental leaders.

00:37The release was celebrated and the state's Environmental Protection Fund,

00:41crucial to ocean and coastal restoration efforts across New York there, also helped out.

00:46Oh my gosh, the energy. I've got the chills. I don't know what they were chanting, but it seemed inspirational.

00:51So very good to see.
