BOC, DA seize ₱200-M smuggled frozen mackerel at Port Manila

Bureau of Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel inspected the ₱200 million worth of smuggled frozen mackerel seized at the Port of Manila on August 8. The 21 container vans, declared as fried taro sticks and cuttlefish-flavored balls, came from China. Charges have been filed against the shipment’s owner and brokers. According to the DA, the smuggled fish affects local fishermen. Now deemed safe for consumption, the 720 metric tons of mackerel may be distributed to around 700,000 families.
