00:00Semiconductor products exported from Malaysia to the US will remain exempt from the 19% reciprocal tarif that takes effect tomorrow.
00:09Investment Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz says,
00:14this is because Washington has yet to formally announce its plan to impose tarifs on semiconductor chips produced outside the US.
00:22The recently concluded negotiations with the US, between Malaysia and the US and of course the other countries as well,
00:30Semiconductor was excluded.
00:32So that 19% that Malaysia achieved during our negotiations with the US excluded semiconductor
00:41because semiconductor is seen as economic security and under the Security Act under Section 232,
00:48they are doing investigation.
00:51They have given a timeline until end of December and obviously that's too long for President Trump.
00:58So what has happened is that he said within a week we will know more details
01:03and I've reached out to my counterpart in the US as well.
01:08Separately in Parliament, Zafrul said his ministry would conduct outreach sessions with exporters and industry players across the supply chain
01:15to help mitigate the impact of any future semiconductor tariff.
01:19He added that the government will also encourage industry players to diversify export markets.
01:25Malaysia exported nearly RM120 billion worth of electrical and electronic products to the US in 2024,
01:33with semiconductor products alone making up RM60.6 billion.
