Congress Shashi Tharoor has called on India to impose counter-tariffs on the US in response to former President Donald Trump’s renewed threat of trade restrictions. Tharoor questioned why India is being singled out for trading with Russia, noting that both the EU and the US also import goods from Moscow. He emphasised the need for India to stand its ground and respond firmly.

00:00And more breaking news coming in. Shashi Tharoor has said to India today on the additional tariff that has been imposed by the United States, where he said that India should also impose additional tariffs.
00:14He said that we must increase the figure. India should start engaging with other markets. And that is the immediate resolution that has come in from Shashi Tharoor as a suggestion to the center, where he said that India should not take this line down.
00:29India must retaliate. India must impose an additional tariff and increase the current figure. Not just that, it should be a two-pronged approach, where he said that India must also start engaging with other markets.
00:45Shashi Tharoor, in that exclusive comment to India today, has reacted to India's response and how it should be to the United States, saying that India must impose a retaliatory tariff, the fact that U.S. has increased the tariff to 50% on India.

02:12ukraine but our money will be used against ukraine this is absolutely unjust and i'm sorry we will
02:17have to stand up against it i am very firmly of the view that in the next three weeks our negotiator
02:22should make it very clear how unfair this is and this is not acceptable we are not a nation that
02:27goes around issuing threats but in my view apart from diversifying to various other markets which
02:33is very important for us to do we should also make it very clear to our american friends that
02:39if they are going to apply 50 percent to us the day they do that our current tariffs on america
02:45which is only an average of 17 percent will also go up to 50. so you think that we should also apply
02:51is used by mr trump he wants reciprocal traffic so whatever he does to us we'll do to him it'll be
02:55reciprocal but my point is very simple this whole battle is on unnecessary and unjust why is india
03:01being singled out when china the eu and america itself are doing the same thing that we are doing
03:07so i my question is they have to look but in the meantime i'm sure that our negotiators are working
03:12with the american negotiators there's three weeks window for this secondly even the 25 percent can
03:18be negotiated downwards if our negotiators do a good job and thirdly of course we must be very much
03:23engaged in diversifying our markets we now have an ft with the uk we must sell a lot to the uk and through
03:29the uk to other countries we must give it give materials to the eu and we must also definitely start
03:35looking for new places where we can also threatening to impose more sanctions when question was asked
03:39you said that more sanctions could come in coming fine if they want to declare this kind of uh complete
03:44break and rupture in the relationship we will have to draw our lessons from that we are not exactly uh
03:50you know without resources without friends or without markets we will manage but whatever it is the
03:54indian people will stand behind our government if the government stands firmly for national interest
03:59that's all we can do you think we should engage with other markets of course we must that's normal
04:03we have to find other markets because if genuinely our goods are 50 percent more expensive who will
04:08buy them in america there'll be a tremendous drop in the sale of those items which will be at least
04:13half the 90 billion dollars we are sending them but half will go and then we'll have to try and
04:18find other markets to make up for that thank you so that's uh important comment coming in from congress mp
04:23shashitaro who has now said that uh if this uh 50 percent tariff continues then india should also
04:28consider cutting across to piush mishra hunanjo and slime on the broadcast piush you spoke to shashi
04:33tharoor and while he makes a very fair point but uh it is important what the government decides and
04:39every all the pros and cons that will be weighed in before uh taking any step in that direction
04:47that's right that's a very big comment coming in from congress mp shashitaro who is now of the view
04:52that uh this 50 percent tariff is implemented by america then india also must consider implementing
04:59the reciprocal travel tariffs which means that uh we have the average tariff of 17 percent that should
05:04also increase from 17 percent to 50 percent that's what shashi tharoor is also saying at the same time
05:10tharoor is making very important the point that at one side when china is buying russian oil when
05:15european union is buying russian products america itself is buying russian products like uranium and other
05:21things and why singling out india that's the important point which shashi tharoor is making
05:25is also saying that your money which means the money of america or european union could use
05:31against you will not be used against you ukraine and our money will that's what the shashi tharoor is
05:36also asking at the same time swisha tharoor has gone on to say that india must start exploring other
05:42markets and we have a friends uh uh in the windy on the global platform we are in good relations with
05:49other countries also we should explore their markets also that's what the term is saying so
05:53that's a very big comment coming in and the biggest point which is making is that if the 50 percent
05:58tariff is implemented then india must consider implementing reciprocal tariff and should increase
06:04the points from 17 to 50 percent that's some very important comment coming in from uh shashi tharoor
06:10but i'd say at the same time he's also saying that uh this entire fight is unjustified up unreasonable
06:17and remember that yesterday minister of external affairs had also issued a statement saying that
06:21uh uh the kind of attack which is being carried out against india by donald trump is completely
06:26unjustified unreasonable uh and uh you know india will further take necessary actions to ensure that
06:32all its national interests are safeguarded and on similar lines we are now seeing how shashi tharoor has
06:37come out and has not only are going to say that these actions are unjustified but he has also said that
06:42india must consider implementing reciprocal tariff and our negotiators should you know inform this
06:48uh to the officials of america remember that the negotiations will take place uh by 25th of august
06:56and the end of this month and in that meeting government government of india should make its point
07:01very very clear that's what a congress mp shashi tharoor seems uh you are saying absolutely and uh which is
07:07surviving once again listen in to what uh he had said to you a short while ago
07:16one what's the 25 percent addition in the tariff has been imposed by trump how do you see this
07:20look i mean i think this is an extremely unfair and unjust in various ways uh first of all because
07:27the allegation is it's because we are buying russian oil and gas which in any case if something
07:32we're doing in the open market within the respect for the rules under which indeed the russian
07:36price cap is being observed by us secondly china has been given 90 days grace period they buy far
07:41more russian oil and gas than we do thirdly the european union has got no such threat and they also
07:47buy russian oil and gas fourthly america itself buys other items from russia america buys uh
07:55uranium hexafluoride america buys palladium america buys various materials from the from the russians
08:01so that doesn't that money is not going to be used against ukraine but our money will be used
08:05against ukraine this is absolutely unjust and i'm sorry we will have to stand up against it
08:10i am very firmly of the view that in the next three weeks our negotiators should make it very clear
08:16how unfair this is and this is not acceptable we are not a nation that goes around issuing threats
08:20but in my view apart from diversifying to various other markets which is very important for us to do
08:27we should also make it very clear to our american friends that if they are going to apply 50 to us the
08:33day they do that our current tariffs on america which is only an average of 17 percent will also
08:39go up to 50. so you think that we should also apply it is used by mr trump he wants reciprocal traffic so
08:45whatever he does to us we'll do to him it'll be reciprocal but my point is very simple this whole
08:50battle is on unnecessary and unjust why is india being singled out when china the eu and america itself
08:57are doing the same thing that we are doing so i my question is they have to look but in the meantime i'm sure
