00:00Is this Germany? That one, right?
00:02Funny you point that out.
00:03Having lived abroad and traveled Europe since he was a child,
00:06Joe wants to show his wife Emily a new way of life in Germany.
00:10I really had that passion to see new countries and walk down new streets.
00:15Joe drove this whole move.
00:17Morgan! We can have a dance party up here.
00:20Yeah.
00:21And it gives me that feeling like we're out in Germany.
00:23But as the sole breadwinner, Emily has more practical concerns.
00:27You can be taking a shower. I still have plenty of room for my makeup.
00:31I can come home from a long day.
00:33Come home from a long day of what?
00:47I've met my wife Emily in Portland in 2019 on a dating app.
00:52And until I met Joe and had heard about all these countries he had been to living abroad,
00:58I always thought that you go to high school, you go to college, you get a good job,
01:03you retire, then you enjoy your life.
01:06Joe flipped that upside down for me.
01:09Portland was a very familiar thing.
01:11I had been born and raised there my whole life.
01:13And so I started thinking, huh, maybe what I've known my entire life doesn't have to be my story.
01:20I was working in law enforcement as a corrections officer with the graveyard shift.
01:25Stand ground, stand ground, stand ground.
01:27I am a teacher and I would just hear him playing video games when I was trying to sleep.
01:31It was really annoying.
01:33I said, you know what, Emily, let's go to Europe now and have that work-life balance.
01:38And also that flexibility to travel a little bit too.
01:40I had already grown by living in Spain.
01:42I knew what it's like.
01:43And now I really wanted to show my wife what it's like.
01:45We both have travel as a top priority for us.
01:49And because Germany is more central Europe, I started looking for different schools.
01:54And the school I got a job at is in a town right outside of Heilbronn called Erlenbach.
02:00And I'm determined to find a job as soon as we land that allows us to have more weekend trips, more time with our cats, that correlates with her schedule as well.
02:09This view is just incredible, isn't it?
02:11I know.
02:12The fact that I can actually see the train station from here makes me feel like we're not so...
02:17Remote?
02:18Remote.
02:19Doesn't feel like home though.
02:20I feel like this is another planet.
02:22Makes you look at life in a different perspective.
02:25So when people think about Germany, they usually think about Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt.
02:31And this is actually a hidden gem.
02:34So Heilbronn and its surrounding areas are known for being a wine county.
02:39And many times the surrounding suburbs around Heilbronn are even more popular than the city itself for its amazing views and all of the nature around it as well.
02:48Having never even been to any country in Europe, I'm going into this completely blind.
02:55And me not having a job yet is challenging, but I'm trying to find a job as quick as I can to help support that single income right now.
03:02But Joe's career reset might be difficult in this rural district, despite incredible infrastructure between villages.
03:09We think and hope it's less, but in reality, we don't know a whole lot about the market here.
03:15If you look around, if you look at these houses, there's some pretty traditional ones.
03:19There's these half-timbered houses.
03:21Uh-huh.
03:22So you see those wooden beams and between that there's sometimes brick or sometimes even clay and hay.
03:27Could you imagine living in one of these houses?
03:29That's the kind of timbered house that I would love to live in.
03:32The high-voltage ceilings, German architecture.
03:36I just don't want the interior to look outdated.
03:39What is important for you in general?
03:41What are you looking for?
03:42Yeah, I want to find something that, you know, is preferably top floor, that has a beautiful terrace to look out with big windows for our cats and also just beautiful views of Germany.
03:52And then not a far walk to the train station, something that can get us out of town quickly.
03:56One of the big things is work and travel for us.
03:58I have a job.
03:59He does not have a job yet.
04:00So it's really important for me to be able to get to work quickly.
04:04Um, somewhere that has a guest bedroom for family.
04:07Already furnished is a huge asset.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Okay.
04:11Just not extra money on furniture.
04:12We don't have extra money to spend.
04:13Okay.
04:14So what are you willing to spend?
04:15$1,300 minimum.
04:17I don't really have a maximum.
04:18I'm willing to go over that.
04:19Okay.
04:20$1,300 is my maximum.
04:22Okay.
04:23So.
04:24Joe says he doesn't care about how much they're spending.
04:27This is already our train actually.
04:29Okay.
04:30My strategy will be to show them exactly what they're looking for, but also for them to realize what would they have to spend to get that.
04:37We're going to look at something right in the center of Heilbronn, 30 minutes away from your workplace.
04:42Uh, but it's really where you want to be at if you come to Heilbronn for the first time.
04:47There's some award winning architecture around here.
04:50There's many little gardens, uh, surrounding this, uh, newly built area.
04:55Look at everything on our doorstep here.
04:57But there's a lot of construction right over here.
04:59Wait until you see inside.
05:01We're going to look at a two bedroom, one bath rooftop apartment.
05:05It has a nice balcony with a great view.
05:07It has a great terrace as well.
05:09So we're at $1,500 a month for this.
05:12$1,500?
05:14No.
05:15No way.
05:16It's definitely worth it.
05:17So let's have a look.
05:18Okay, let's go.
05:19I had strict rules and it was $1,300 maximum.
05:24Guys, look at this.
05:26Amazing.
05:27Wow.
05:28Oh my gosh.
05:29I love it.
05:30It's so sleek and clean and modern.
05:33This is very, very nice.
05:35Small fridge.
05:37But you have everything you need just downstairs.
05:40If you want to go to shop, it's right there.
05:43Convenient.
05:44Yeah.
05:45It feels upscale, like Portland-y vibe.
05:47I could see myself sitting here for hours watching movies.
05:51Movies or video games?
05:52Consoles too.
05:53And then just came here all the hours.
05:55I am so nervous about him actually job hunting when I'm away and not playing video games.
06:02The balcony goes all the way around.
06:04Wow.
06:05So what I want to show you next, there's a guest bedroom over here.
06:08Okay.
06:09And let's have a look at the main bedroom.
06:10So it also leads out to this balcony and look at this view.
06:14Wow.
06:15This is a big main bedroom.
06:17I love the floor to ceiling, windows.
06:20You have the rolling hills in the distance and a little bit of German architecture I can see.
06:23Yeah.
06:24But you know, I still don't feel like I'm in Germany when I'm inside this apartment.
06:28So let's continue and let's have a look at the bathroom next.
06:32Oh, wow.
06:33It's very new and updated.
06:34And this has a lot of space for two people in here.
06:35True.
06:36You can be taking a shower.
06:37I still have plenty of room for my makeup, my hair straightener.
06:39So let's have a look outside next.
06:40Yes.
06:41I've been waiting to see this.
06:42Yeah.
06:43I thought so.
06:44As if the wrap around balcony is not enough, there's an additional terrace.
06:47Wow.
06:48This is absolutely beautiful.
06:49This is the space we asked for.
06:50I'd really love a big terrace.
06:51I love how big the bedrooms are.
06:52I really, really value family and having them come here.
06:55So I really like it and I hate to say that because I wish I hated it since it's so expensive.
06:59I love how big the bedrooms are.
07:02I really, really value family and having them come here.
07:06So I really like it and I hate to say that because I wish I hated it since it's so expensive.
07:11But unfortunately, you literally delivered exactly what I was hoping to see.
07:16This could be something very convenient as well.
07:19But I guess that's something that takes a little bit more time to think about.
07:22Just that price is pushing it.
07:24Obviously, you always have to pay more to get more.
07:26And I think this is a great opportunity for them to check what are their priorities.
07:31You can already see the view from here.
07:33Look at that.
07:34Wow.
07:35That's beautiful.
07:36That's so pretty.
07:37At $1,000 a month.
07:38And it gives me that feeling like we're out in Germany.
07:40But I was a little nervous about what the inside would look like.
07:44Ooh.
07:45I mean, when's the last time we've done something like this in a vineyard?
07:48This is really romantic.
07:49I feel like this is the European life that we don't get in Oregon.
07:53I want to be able to go try new foods, new wine, new beer, see new cities, see new history.
08:00I like being part of that atmosphere and I like having something new.
08:03After traveling around the world, Joe is returning to Europe for a fresh start.
08:08But that means relying on Emily's single income until he figures out his next career move.
08:13I'm very financially conservative.
08:16Even going out to eat when I started dating Joe, I would want to eat PB&J and fill up on that before going out to eat so that I could eat the free bread.
08:25She just tends to worry too much.
08:28Did I tell you I actually had a dream the other night?
08:31Well, it was more like a nightmare.
08:32Something happened with my work and we were forced to go back to the States and I was devastated.
08:37I'm really happy.
08:38So thank you for pushing me to do this.
08:40This is giving me brownie points so I can go home and play some console time.
08:43Console time?
08:45Find a job.
08:46Being in a new country with a language that I know nothing about.
08:51Far away from family, far away from my comfort zone.
08:55I am nervous I might lose our only income and feel like an outsider.
09:00So there's a lot I'm worried about.
09:02So staying in Emily's price range means most likely moving out of the city center of health.
09:09But if I find a job that's further away, that means I'm going to have to commute.
09:13Yeah, but you don't have a job right now.
09:15So we are now in Weinsbeck.
09:17Okay.
09:18It literally means wine mountain.
09:20It's a lot of nature.
09:21It's beautiful.
09:22My only worry is that it might be too far out of town.
09:26As you can tell from the train ride, it's about 20 minutes away from the city and about
09:3150 minutes away from your workplace.
09:33So it's actually good.
09:34I like that.
09:35So this is the house we're going to be looking at.
09:37You can already see the view from here.
09:39And it gives me that feeling like we're out in Germany.
09:41But it doesn't look historic.
09:43It looks old and outdated.
09:45It's a two bedroom apartment, one bathroom, fully furnished, and has a nice big balcony
09:50at $1,000 a month.
09:52$1,000.
09:53I am okay with that.
09:55The less, the better.
09:56But I was a little nervous about what the inside would look like.
09:59All right.
10:00So this, which is also dining area, leads to all the different rooms.
10:06I like all the lighting.
10:07It feels very bright in here.
10:09I don't like these floors at all.
10:11They seem really outdated and old.
10:14Same with this glass situation.
10:16I don't know.
10:17I'm not a fan of things that look outdated.
10:20So what many expats have to understand when we start looking at different places is that we don't always have a whole lot to choose from.
10:27We actually have shortage on properties here in all over Germany.
10:31So let's start over here in the living room.
10:34A lot more modern, right?
10:35Yeah.
10:36Yeah.
10:37I really like the vaulted ceiling that I can just walk in, sit down on the couch, make myself feel comfortable.
10:43I can play many hours on this couch.
10:45I hate to say it, but I might even join him.
10:47Oh, God.
10:48Online match.
10:49I'm out of here, Kevin.
10:50No, I mean.
10:51If we can just stay away from a video game console altogether, that would be my preference.
10:58Have a look over here.
11:00I see a big bed.
11:01I can come home from a long day and just relax and hop on the bed.
11:05And I feel like I have plenty of space between me and Emily.
11:09Come home from a long day of what?
11:12You need to get a job first.
11:14I'm going to get a job.
11:15Oh.
11:16Eventually.
11:17I'm considering all options.
11:18I'm looking at all websites.
11:19I'm researching.
11:20I'm going to determine to find a job that matches Emily's schedule so we can do the things we want to do in Europe.
11:26But that's not all.
11:27There's one more bedroom.
11:28Oh, good.
11:29Perfect.
11:30I need a space for my family.
11:31Absolutely.
11:32So let's have a look at the bathroom next.
11:34Okay.
11:35Ooh.
11:36Right away, I don't think it's going to work for me.
11:40That's tough.
11:41I'm going to have to be like showering with my hands in the air doing like this in the shower.
11:47There's not going to be enough room for us.
11:49I have something to make up for it.
11:50Okay.
11:51I hope so.
11:52Come with me.
11:53You have the kitchen with everything you need.
11:57Good size fridge, right?
11:59Yeah, that's huge.
12:00Not bad.
12:01It has a dishwasher.
12:02It also has a couple of nice windows too to look out at the beautiful architecture of those homes.
12:07The fact that I can look outside and see that I'm part of this German culture is huge.
12:12But check out this view which is a lot nicer.
12:15Follow me.
12:16Okay.
12:17Wow.
12:18Now this is.
12:19Oh my word.
12:20There's vineyards.
12:21I can see on this direction.
12:23I turn and see more here.
12:25This is exactly what I was looking for.
12:28The terrace, the vaulted ceilings.
12:30Old and outdated is what comes to my mind.
12:33This view is priceless but a bathroom like that, that might be a deal breaker for me.
12:38Also don't forget you're 15 minutes away to your workplace and we're at $1,000 a month.
12:43I really value spending the least amount of money possible.
12:48Though I do get worried about access to different places that I'm used to having at my fingertips back in the States.
12:55We are in Bad Wimfel.
12:57It is a town that absolutely has magical flair.
13:00Architecture is exactly what I'm looking for in a home.
13:03What's the outdoor space like?
13:05This is your outdoor space.
13:06Yeah.
13:07You go out this door and you're in the middle of it all.
13:09But it's updated as soon as you come in here.
13:12Terrace I need big time.
13:13For $700 a month, that is a steal.
13:17Oh look, you can go through here.
13:19Like a tunnel to the past.
13:21Yes, it is.
13:22Wow.
13:23What a view.
13:25I love it.
13:26So much to explore in this country.
13:28Joe wants to open Emily's eyes to all Europe has to offer.
13:31He had the experience of living abroad, whereas I knew nothing about it.
13:36How many years old do you think this rock is?
13:38Wow.
13:39Probably from the 1300.
13:40This is like medieval knights and yeah, this is incredible.
13:43Medieval knights, yeah.
13:44Can you imagine like their guns protecting?
13:47No guns back then.
13:48No guns.
13:49What are the years?
13:50Bow and arrows.
13:51That's how old this is?
13:52Yeah.
13:53Bow and arrows?
13:54It's that old.
13:55Oh, it's that old.
13:56Yeah.
13:57I've been to Germany three times prior.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Munich, Berlin and then Stuttgart for a weekend with my boys.
14:06Emily doesn't know about that weekend.
14:07Yeah, I don't.
14:08That was news to me.
14:09Is it working?
14:10I love that we can translate stuff.
14:13What does it say?
14:14It was intended for firearms.
14:16It probably dates.
14:17Firearms, Joe.
14:1817th century.
14:19I was right.
14:20What annoys me about Joe is when he doesn't listen to me, but now that I'm the one who has
14:26gotten the job, he can put up with me, realizing we're not on a vacation.
14:31This is our life.
14:32Yes, we want to get out and explore, but this is also our livelihood and not just a trip where
14:38we can blow a bunch of money.
14:39It's an uphill battle in this limited market to find German architecture for Joe with an
14:44updated interior for Emily, all on a single income.
14:48Wow.
14:49So we're going to have to move further out and look at options that are a little bit
14:54further away from Emily's workplace.
14:55All right, guys.
14:56So we are now in Bad Wimfen.
14:58As you can see, public transportation here is no problem at all.
15:02Some of these streets haven't been changed for centuries, so you can really see the history
15:06here.
15:07Yeah.
15:08Architecture is exactly what I'm looking for in a home.
15:10This is picture book Germany.
15:11Wow.
15:12This is as German as it gets, okay?
15:14Wow.
15:15We're going to be able to look at a very good deal.
15:18Yeah.
15:19You're only three minutes away from public transportation.
15:21Okay.
15:22Which is about half an hour away from the city center of Heilborn and about 40 minutes away
15:28from Emily's workplace.
15:2940 minutes?
15:30It's a lot.
15:31But honestly, if you look around, you're in the middle of the market square.
15:35So this is the house that we're going to be looking at.
15:39So it's one bedroom, one bathroom at $700 a month for this one.
15:44Wow.
15:45Okay.
15:46That's really great.
15:47I love the price.
15:48What's the outdoor space like?
15:49This is your outdoor space.
15:50You go out the door and you're in the middle of it all.
15:53Want to have a look inside?
15:54Yeah.
15:55Let's check it out.
15:56Cheaper the better.
15:57I'm ready.
15:58Let's do this.
15:59Okay.
16:00Very good.
16:01Let's go.
16:02Okay, guys.
16:03I like the new and I like a more modern feel.
16:06So I really do like that it feels homey.
16:09I mean, honestly, architecture, old building, views of old buildings.
16:14I like that it's continuing the vibe into the kitchen.
16:17I'm okay with this.
16:19Right next to it, you have the bathroom over here.
16:22This is nice.
16:23This is big.
16:24I can feel like I can actually stand in here and actually take a shower without having to bend over.
16:29I like the long mirror for getting ready.
16:33Although saving money is a big priority for me.
16:36Looking at my husband's face seeing this property is definitely better than he expected.
16:43There's a bedroom of a great size for a German bedroom, I can tell you.
16:48Yeah, I like the size.
16:50I think the space could work.
16:53I just keep coming back to the commute.
16:55I'm really concerned about how far it is.
16:58The fact that it doesn't have a terrace is huge for me too.
17:01But when you walk out this door, you have so much terraces, you know?
17:06So many cafes just right in front of your door.
17:09Don't forget that.
17:10For $700 a month, that is a steal.
17:13You cannot find something like this.
17:15Price-wise and space-wise, they'll be crazy not to take this apartment.
17:21It is one bedroom.
17:22Yeah.
17:23I mean, we have family that might come visit,
17:25but the question is how often are they going to come visit?
17:28That is true.
17:29It is the cheapest option.
17:31I just don't know if it's the one.
17:34Cute little village.
17:36Sunny day.
17:38Everywhere you look, it's views.
17:40Yes, it has the architecture.
17:42It has those little windows.
17:44And the colorful little boards on the houses are just beautiful.
17:47Super cute.
17:48Look at that funny little statue over there.
17:51Hi, little friend.
17:52Oh, I love it.
17:53It's cute.
17:54World traveler Joe convinced wife Emily to leave Oregon for the first time.
17:59This is a big unknown for me.
18:01And then on top of that, I'm going to be working with children to teach them English.
18:07But shouldering the full financial burden, she's feeling even more conservative than usual.
18:13Gosh, this is going to be difficult.
18:14It is.
18:15What do you think about the one with that rooftop terrace?
18:17I was just in love with the space in that apartment.
18:20It was.
18:21And the balcony that wrapped all the way around the place.
18:24The views up there, oh my gosh, I'm out of space.
18:27Right down below is a nice cafe.
18:29Yeah.
18:30It's new and modern, fully furnished, just how I like it.
18:34It's really the price for me.
18:36You know, the price doesn't matter to me at this point because that's a beautiful apartment.
18:39Says the one without a job.
18:41I think I have some promising leads.
18:43Okay.
18:44So the one with vineyard views.
18:46I really love that terrace.
18:47And it has multiple rooms in it.
18:50Space for our guests.
18:51However, the bathroom was really small.
18:53Like I said, I would be having to put my hands in the air a lot to take a shower.
18:57Between that and the outdated touches, like I remember the floors and that weird glass window.
19:03Yeah.
19:04But $1,000, it's not super expensive.
19:07It's not, it's just kind of in the middle.
19:09So if we just want to talk about the historical village, it is the cheapest option.
19:14It is one bedroom.
19:15Yeah.
19:16With no terrace.
19:17I also feel like it's a little remote, farther away from my work.
19:21We can always come visit.
19:22Visit, yeah.
19:23But.
19:24Not the place to live.
19:25Not the place to live.
19:26Okay.
19:27Gonna have to cross that one off.
19:28Yeah.
19:29That rooftop terrace.
19:30Oh my gosh.
19:31I mean, that's something I've been really looking for.
19:32The amount of windows in that thing has.
19:33I know, the space.
19:34The windows.
19:35But it still lacks the bolted ceiling.
19:36It's that German architecture that I really want.
19:37Yeah.
19:38But the size of the bathroom is a huge plus for me.
19:39And for me, travel time to work is super important.
19:43And the place that had the rooftop terrace is farther away than the vineyard views.
19:50And then.
19:51And it gives me that feeling like we're out in Germany.
19:53And the fact that it has appliances that are a little bit bigger.
19:56Yeah.
19:57I was surprised to see that because before then there was that outdated just feel to it.
20:01Yeah.
20:02But between the price distance from my work and ultimately I didn't make this big move to
20:04Europe.
20:05Yeah.
20:06Yeah.
20:07Yeah.
20:08Yeah.
20:09Yeah.
20:10Yeah.
20:11Yeah.
20:12Yeah.
20:13Yeah.
20:14Yeah.
20:15Yeah.
20:16Yeah.
20:17Yeah.
20:18Yeah.
20:19Yeah.
20:20Yeah.
20:21Yeah.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Yeah.
20:24I didn't make this big move to Europe coming here for my first time to live the life that
20:28we lived back home.
20:29Right.
20:30We don't.
20:31We wanted that German experience.
20:32Right.
20:33I agree.
20:34So let's dive on in.
20:35Vineyard views it is.
20:36Vineyard views it is.
20:37Should we go explore the city somewhere?
20:38Okay.
20:39You can put me down.
20:41My favorite food and it's cheap.
20:46Couldn't ask for anything more.
20:48It took me longer than I thought to feel established in my new job, but now I'm loving it.
20:53Wife's going to be home soon, so I got to log off boys.
20:56Okay?
20:57And I found a job as a teaching assistant and the process of trying to become a teacher.
21:01Can you pour me a glass?
21:02Absolutely.
21:03And we get to spend a lot more quality time than before.
21:06I really like it here.
21:07When I think back to when we came here, choosing it based off of my job, we really hit the jackpot.
21:13This is perfect for us.
21:15The guest room is definitely something that's been used a lot.
21:18Beautiful views.
21:19I know.
21:20This wine is so good.
21:21We are loving every single minute.
21:24We've explored so many different countries.
21:26There's endless things that we want to do around here and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
21:29What's the tip of the iceberg?
21:30Let's do all the time wandering around here.
21:31We expect to relax and pull back today or even during the night.
21:32구 pup group adventure when they make fun and take a Important look at Hallelujah what's
21:34on the Nothing But Now.
21:35the end.
21:36What springаль, the life surely has a little Yes!
21:37which is the tip of the iceberg.
