00:00one of the largest declines uh... in over thirty years in micro is the ceo of
00:04micro works foundation and is back with us now might get to see uh... it is a
00:08really big gamble trying to completely reconfigure
00:12a thirty trillion dollar economy
00:14you know and and he's taken a lot of political heat for for what he's trying
00:17to do here but we're starting to see the benefits are
00:21well sometimes i think things have to go splat
00:24before people
00:25truly pay attention
00:26what does that mean
00:28uh... reasonable people uh... might have different opinions personally
00:33i think when you see
00:35seven point six million open jobs
00:38that can't be filled
00:40that's
00:41that's going to get your attention at least it should
00:43when you see seven million able-bodied men
00:47who have chosen not only not to work but not
00:49to look for work
00:51that'll get your attention
00:52one point seven trillion dollars in outstanding student debt that'll get
00:56your attention and of course the the self inflicted implosion in the ivies
01:01that's impossible to ignore meanwhile trade schools are growing community
01:07colleges are growing and this idea that the technology was going to come and
01:13completely up and the blue collar chunk of our workforce
01:17well there are some threats and there's definitely going to be an impact but
01:21right now the smart money seems to be
01:24looking at a i and the disruption
01:26it's going to cause in the white collar part of our workforce
01:30so look i'm not wishing disruption on anyone but for seventeen years we've been
01:34awarding work ethic scholarships for
01:37the next generation of plumbers and steam fitters and pipe fitters and mechanics and
01:41welders and i'm telling you rob
01:43we had more people this year
01:45in our enrollment program to apply ten times what we did last year
01:51that means something that somewhere
01:53has happened on a seismic level
01:55yeah it is it certainly doesn't admit it makes a lot of sense to have people
02:00and i you talk to
02:01people that have anything about any lawyers this country spits out every single
02:04year that so many of them get
02:06i mean we're what are all these lawyers doing is what i want to know i spoke to
02:09somebody that runs a law from the other day and they said how quickly a i is that
02:12they're going to replace so many of the
02:13smaller jobs inside of a law firm and and jobs like that
02:16they they are going to start disappearing
02:18but what what you guys are are supporting here and you're giving five
02:21million for this um an ethics scholarship for people who want to get a
02:25four-year degree in a skilled trade
02:27you know these are the kinds of jobs that are pretty much a i proof right
02:32well i don't think anything is ultimately going to be invincible to the a i it's
02:36going to come at us in fits and starts um
02:39but we really haven't changed microworks was founded on labor day in 2008 as a
02:45pr campaign for the very jobs you're describing
02:47um i i don't have anything intrinsically against a four-year degree i have one
02:52myself and it served me pretty well but that's not what's we're not suffering
02:58right now from a lack of graduates from four-year schools we are suffering from a
03:04lack of enthusiastic men and women who want to show up early stay late and
03:09master a skill that's in demand and that need has widened that gap
03:15has widened and this will sound hyperbolic but i i swear i'm telling you the truth
03:21not a week goes by that i don't get a phone call from
03:24somebody at the top of the food chain of some industry could be automotive
03:27they're looking for 80 000 people right now in collision repair and and uh
03:34technicians energy it's more like 300 000 electricians 500 000 it it just goes on
03:41and on and it's like a memo went out not just to the news agencies but to
03:47governors and to ceos people are paying attention and something has shifted for
03:52sure yeah and and these are oftentimes very good paying jobs you know they
03:57don't have that reputation people think i got to get a four-year degree to get a
04:00good paying job no you can learn how to fix something and you can start a
04:03business and you can have a damn nice life well look i mean it that often gets
04:08forgotten you're it's it's very true most of the people we help start with
04:13getting a welding degree but the ones who hit it out of the park you know they'll
04:17buy a van and they'll hire a friend who's a plumber and then an electrician and
04:20then you've got a mechanical contracting company and then suddenly three years
04:24later you got a guy doing three million dollars a year because the need is such
04:29that the demand requires it so i i could give you 2 500 examples it's happening
04:35that's very cool micro we appreciate you coming on thank you so much anytime
