Rolling Stone caught up with The Dare at Lollapalooza to shuffle his music library, talk about working with PinkPantheress, and his new EP of dance music.
Transcript
00:00I typically don't love albums that are over like 12 to 14 songs for sure I think it could have done
00:05with a little bit of editing hey this is rolling stone we're here at Lollapalooza with The Dare
00:11Mr. The Dare can you shuffle your music for us yes I can let's bust it out anything you're a
00:17little nervous might come up are you yeah actually you are we'll see what happens okay all right
00:21ready let's do it boom oh classic great one Velvet Elvis by Casey Musgraves off golden hour
00:29one of the greatest albums of all time
00:31not my favorite song on the album but a very playful slightly more dancey one I suppose
00:43I used to listen to it driving around in the Pacific Northwest a little bit I feel like it was kind of
00:49like a gateway drug into country music for me a little bit what is your favorite song on that
00:54album if you had to choose I think my favorite is either mother or love is a wild thing but
00:59I love the whole record I think it's pretty incredible front to back should we do it another
01:03shuffle what could happen what could happen oh 405 by Justin Bieber off his new album Swag
01:11I actually just listened to the album on a flight back from Japan last week and I fell asleep it could
01:25have been the jet lag it could have been the you know soothing soulful sounds of Swag but I enjoyed
01:32some of the first half I like the singles Daisies and Yukon but it's a really long album and unless
01:38records are like have its sort of conceptual edge to them I typically don't love albums that are over
01:44like 12 to 14 songs for sure I think it could have done with a little bit of editing what do you think
01:50the sweet spot of track numbers is for an album anywhere in between nine and 14 is kind of perfect
01:58I think pet sounds is 14 songs and revolver is 14 songs that's pretty much maxing out and I think
02:04the run times are under 40 minutes I don't think the actual runtime is that long one swag just lots of
02:08tracks okay oh a great song psychotic episode by royal headache
02:13one of the greatest australian bands of all time unfortunately they only released two albums
02:23royal headache singer shogun has like one of the most beautiful voices he's a one take wizard you know he
02:29allegedly only does one take and psychotic episode is you know a song about his mental health problems
02:35I've listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times walking around New York feeling a bit crazy
02:40I love that not you feeling crazy but I love the memory do you remember the first time you heard
02:44that song I think the first time I heard it was in Bushwick uh going to this club that's now changed
02:51hands many times but it was called 444 back then and I remember walking from the train station to
02:56there listening to it and just feeling hurt you know let's see here boom okay this is a live still
03:04by dreamcaster
03:06dreamcaster also known as woody he's part of an upstate rap collective called shed theory they're
03:17basically a bunch of guys who started recording kind of plug style rap music in their dad's shed I
03:24believe in their backyard I could be getting the story wrong sorry guys they are hilarious they each
03:29have their own sort of like musical style and aesthetic like I see their collective as being
03:34adjacent to surf gang in New York City woody is uh incredibly emotional member he has a great voice
03:41he has a really beautiful lisp and he also has like really emotional lyrics and great melodies the best
03:48environment for this song to come on is it's raining you know maybe you're in your apartment you got your
03:53headphones on you're in touch with your feelings maybe it's a little bit later at night want to do one
03:58more let's do one more I'm loving this game so fun there's a little bit of risk involved that's why
04:03it's good okay this is a great one heavy weather by Jarvis Cocker
04:07a really great song off his solo record I believe called Jarvis this one literally has rain and storm
04:19sounds in it it's just a conceptually extremely tight song like if Chapel Rowan or Sabrina Carpenter
04:27released this song I'm sure it would go to number one it's just a beautiful little song about
04:31longing and lost love and loneliness and uh rain it's sort of a slightly more sentimental side of
04:38Jarvis Cocker and I can relate to that you know a little bit I think there's going to be a more
04:42sentimental side of the dare that maybe you will all be privileged to see in the future we would be
04:49so lucky yes I'm curious what curious what song you think people should be putting on their playlists
04:55you should put something by the band world peace DMT from London they just put out a really amazing
05:02album called uh the velvet underground and Rowan with uh Rowan from the fem cells
05:08they uh are sort of like a freak folk sample collage semi twee underground London band
05:23that I think is going to do really cool big things just sounds like uh people in love with making
05:29music making music and having fun doing it not taking it too seriously you should definitely add
05:34tambourine by the dare which has been released today
05:41how does it feel having that out in the world so good it's a song that I've been playing in dj sets for
05:46the last year or so it's uh the first of a four song dance EP called frequencies volume one that
05:53will be the first installment in many installments of dance music and uh if you like fun zany and
06:01production heavy dance music I think it might be for you you also recently produced stateside
06:07by pink panthers who we just actually did the same video with a couple days ago
06:15she had very kind things to say about you wondering if you'd like to return the favor
06:18just talk a little bit about working with her yeah Vicky is awesome we connect we have good banter
06:29working with her is very fun and easy we were like a lot of felt like a lot of like nerves flying
06:33around the first day you know the good kind where you're productive and excited to just be in the
06:39room working on stuff with somebody and then we just became pen pals sort of and uh got the
06:44song finished while I was on tour of the us she's the best can you tell me a little bit about the
06:49making of uh frequencies volume one I feel like most of these songs were made at some point over the
06:54last year to dj to try out different styles of music that I previously hadn't really explored as much
07:02more french touch electro more modern sounding dance music as well just to see like what people
07:08responded to things I could play during sets uses dj tools there were a couple others that didn't make
07:13this collection but you know there's going to be a lot more to come and I'm just constantly making
07:17stuff for these dj sets so if you've been to a frequencies dj site you've likely heard these
07:22songs at some point and if not you know congratulations something brand new yeah
