00:07A poll during the rounds on social media alleges that only 7% of French citizens trust the country's president, Emmanuel Macron.
00:14The picture of Macron has gained traction on social media and has been shared by a number of users,
00:19including by politicians from the French far-right Rassemblement National party.
00:24Euroverifier decided to investigate this suspiciously low approval rating.
00:28By taking a closer look at the image, the top right corner displays a logo,
00:32which is the same as Le Figaro's, a French conservative daily newspaper.
00:36Euroverifier checked Le Figaro's publications on X and filed a legitimate post shared by the publication in October 2024.
00:43At the time, a survey commissioned by the newspaper found that Macron's approval rating was 17%.
00:49The number one preceding the 7% on Le Figaro's original X post has been erased in order to fool online users.
00:57As for Macron's real trust levels, according to a poll published in late July, his approval stands at 28%, a 4-point drop from June.
01:05Meanwhile, another recent poll revealed that 21% of French citizens trusted Macron.
01:10Pollsters use different research methods, which can lead to differing results.
01:14However, these figures are a far cry from the 7% figure.
01:17Macron's popularity has dwindled over the course of his second term, influenced by a range of factors, including his dissolution of the National Assembly in June 2024, after the far-right surged in the European parliamentary elections, as well as more recently his government's plans for 2026 budgetary cuts.
01:35Although the post was recently shared by public-facing figures from the Rassemblement National Party, Euroverifier detected that the post has been circulating on social media since December 2024.
01:47Posts analysed by Euroverifier reveal that users sharing the fake poll aimed to discredit Macron's political legitimacy.
