02:01why it is you guys keep watching a show that has no set, no script, no actors, no plot.
02:08More importantly, I want to explore those forces at work that might explain why I can't stop doing it.
02:15In the beginning, we took a couple of cameras out into the field and found some very dirty jobs.

03:37Turns out, after those first three pilots aired, you wanted to see more dirty jobs.

03:48About 105 degrees down here in the sludge pit.

03:52You wanted to smell more of what I was smelling.
03:54And there's that great aroma again.
03:56That is a very unique smell.
03:58Our challenge was clear.
04:00With nothing to rely on but audio and video, we had to somehow deliver all five senses through
04:05a two-dimensional medium right into the cozy confines of your living room.
04:10In order to capture the intensity of the jobs we were profiling, we were going to need
04:14to get a little closer to the action.
04:17And when I say a little, I mean a lot.
04:20And when I say closer, I mean, well, right up there.
04:24Like, in it.
04:27I'm talking in-your-face kind of close.
04:31Dangerously close.
04:36Sometimes a little too close.
04:40Alright, stupidly close.
04:43These close-up moments were unplanned, happy accidents that gradually became a part of our
04:48shows.

05:03The idea now is to make sure we found the clog.

05:17Getting the camera near the action meant the action sometimes hit the cameras and the

05:23All part of the fun, though, of digging a hole, I suppose.

05:29We didn't show you these moments at first because, traditionally, shows like ours just
05:34don't do that.
05:35But then we received your letters asking us how our valiant crew members endured the miserable
05:40conditions of dirty jobs.
05:42We showed you a few behind-the-scenes moments, but you wanted more.
05:45So our crew became a regular part of the Dirty Jobs experience.

08:57And I'll never forget Don Ciccoletti's attitude.

22:08welcome back to a very special dirty jobs i was just reflecting on the many different types of dirt
22:17that i've come in contact with over the last couple years there's grime and slime and mud and crud
22:24there's grease there's grit there's sludge and shang yeah the one you can't say the one you can't even
22:32write you can't say shang even if you're covered in charter it sure is a dirty job isn't it yeah
22:40this creek creek so i decided in a somewhat unilateral decision to say crap i'm adrift in a sea of crap
22:50consequently they began in a somewhat unilateral decision to bleep crap i think it's kind of funny
22:56to see you get your shoe stuck in bat crap did he just say back yeah consequently i got a memo saying
23:05crap after all is a bad word and we would prefer it mike if you would in the future say poop it's not
23:11the worms that are valuable it's their poop i'm a full-grown man and full-grown men don't say poop
23:18they say crap or shine just a couple of guys squeeze out of chicks so i need to make an executive
23:27decision and i do what do i do i knock the pee out of poop leaving us with poop now it's time to take
23:35on the pigeons more specifically their poo penguin poop you got yourself a pod made out of poop that's why
23:42from time to time i wear a hat that says poo pays because it does people often ask me what's the
23:49worst thing about poo and i tell them there are a lot of worst things for instance take the way
23:55poo looks it wouldn't be a dirty job if you didn't see some poop what the heck happened the whole thing
24:02backed up gary look at the toilet what a fountain of feces flew out of here another worst thing about
24:08poo is the way it sounds see now i'm gonna get no see that's just that's just blatant upstaging
24:16just move out of the way the point is they poo everywhere and someone has to pick it up exactly
24:22all right and that someone is you yeah you could say the worst thing about poo is the way it feels
24:30i prefer i prefer the poo you can pick up in one piece and i don't know what the heck i'm feeling

34:18on every episode of dirty jobs you can count on hearing some random phrase or comment waft through
34:24the air that demands to be savored remembered memorialized or otherwise written down fat is
34:32money it's one of my all-time favorites it was first uttered by a guy named eli in louisiana as he
34:39was pushing a pig through a bandsaw be ashamed to leave any fat behind no fat and money
34:49say that again i just like the way it sounds that's not the pig in question the point is every
35:01operation has some fat attached to it and throwing it away might not be so smart what you're about to
35:07see was dirty jobs fat we got a beaver right here it was good quality dirty jobs footage very fancy
35:14but unfortunately we didn't have room for it in the original show so it had to be cut
35:20let me send a knife right up through this right here the fact that we're about to show it to you
35:24just goes to prove that eli was right fat really is money uh do you smell this oh yes okay so from
35:34dogs to cats to horses to bison jay villamorette over at skulls unlimited turns dead decaying animals
35:41into presentable white skeletons for classrooms and museums in the end the skeletons are clean
35:47but getting them that way takes some disgusting stomach turning jobs the stink is so fine that it
35:53pierces the gloves great news great news jay when this segment first aired one cute little job we
36:00didn't have time to show you was sucking the brains out of a bear's skull the the brain sucker you you do do
36:08that mm-hmm and that happens right over here brain demiser cerebral extracting device yep so i mean the
36:18mechanics are pretty straightforward stick this thing inside of its skull cavity and pulled the brains
36:24right from it the sound goes with the smell so well sucking brains is a bad job ugh but believe it or not
36:45there's another kind of sucking job that sucks even worse that'd be sucking the semen out of a turkey
36:52i'm a new guy hey guys now if you didn't see this job before let me explain these tom turkeys are so
37:01fat the only way they can breed is by having somebody suck their semen out and then inject it into
37:07fertile hens i gotta put this in my mouth because this is how we're going to suck the whoa whoa whoa what
37:15what's this this is where i'm collecting the semen into why is that in your mouth so it creates suction
37:21that's right you extract the semen by sucking weird strange gross and difficult
37:29i mean really difficult honestly what it's like that's just harder than chinese math right there
