00:00Journey to the West. Chapter 14. A Promise to Protect.
00:10The Tang Monk trembled with fear. The angry voice spoke again.
00:16Who is walking on my mountain?
00:20Cried the Tang Monk. He fell off his horse and tumbled down the mountain.
00:25At the bottom, he saw a crack between the rocks.
00:34The monk looked in and saw a moss-covered monkey peering out at him.
00:40My name is Sun Wukong, said the monkey.
00:44I am king of the Fruit and Flower Mountain.
00:47Why are you in there? asked the Tang Monk. He stood up.
00:51Buddha put me here, said Wukong.
00:55I am being punished for causing trouble in heaven.
00:59Who are you?
01:00I'm just a monk, said the Tang Monk.
01:03I'm going to the Western Paradise to get scriptures from Buddha.
01:08Wukong gasped.
01:09You're the Tang Monk! he cried.
01:12I'm supposed to go with you!
01:15The Tang Monk took a step back.
01:17Was this strange monkey telling the truth?
01:22The Buddha's Atva Guan Yin visited me, Wukong went on.
01:27She said I'd be set free if I promised to protect you on the journey.
01:31Set me free, and I'll go with you to the West.
01:34The Tang Monk relaxed.
01:36He looked at the rocks.
01:39How can I free you?
01:41There's a small piece of paper on top of this mountain, said Wukong.
01:44You must remove it.
01:51The Tang Monk went back up the mountain.
01:54He pushed aside shrubs and brambles and pulled himself over large boulders.
01:59Finally, he reached the mountain's peak.
02:14The monk picked up the paper.
02:17Right away, a breeze swept it from his hand.
02:21The paper floated up and then disappeared among the clouds.
02:24The monk hurried back down the mountain.
02:30The paper floated away, he said to the monkey.
02:34It returned to Buddha, said Wukong.
02:37Now step back!
02:38The Tang Monk took a step back.
02:42Go farther, said Wukong.
02:45The monk took another step back.
02:48Go farther, said Wukong again.
02:53The Tang Monk went far from the mountain.
02:57He gasped as the entire mountain rose into the air.
03:03Wukong stood under the mountain, holding it up with his hands.
03:08He jumped out, and the mountain crashed down behind him.
03:16Wukong grabbed the Tang Monk's hands.
03:19Thank you, Master.
03:20I will help you reach the Western Paradise.
03:24The Tang Monk rode the horse as Wukong walked.
03:28The monkey told the monk about himself.
03:31The Jade Emperor's entire army couldn't defeat me.
03:35He laughed.
03:35So I said I should be in charge of heaven.
03:40What powers do you have?
03:42Asked the Tang Monk.
03:43I can become other animals, said Wukong.
03:47Watch this.
03:50He quickly changed into a tiger.
03:53The Tang Monk gulped.
03:55Wukong changed into a snake, a vulture, and then back into himself.
04:00And that's not all, he said.
04:03I can grow big.
04:07The monkey's body grew so big that his head reached the clouds.
04:12And I can become tiny, said Wukong.
04:16He shrank to the size of a bee and hopped onto the monk's head.
04:19I can do more, said Wukong.
04:23He changed back to his normal size.
04:27His iron bar appeared from his ear.
04:32The monkey spun it around and then struck a huge boulder.
04:37Smash!
04:38The boulder exploded into tiny pieces.
04:42The Tang Monk watched in horror.
04:46Wukong laughed.
04:48Don't look so scared, master.
04:50I'm protecting you.
04:51The two traveled farther until they saw a group of men blocking the road.
04:58The men looked rough and mean.
05:01They all had weapons.
05:03One man stepped forward and waved a sword.
05:07Give us your money or you'll be sorry.
