00:00:00Hi, I'm Cara Durant for Marianna. Thanks.
00:00:19Don't waste another breath. Go to Vietnam. You won't regret it.
00:00:24This is Cara signing off for the final time. Thank you for following my journey all these years. Stay tuned for my next project. It's a little different, but I hope you'll like it. See you soon.
00:00:41Cara? Marianne!
00:00:46Oh, my love, my heart. Welcome back stateside. It's been ages.
00:00:51First time back on American soil in, wow, almost a year.
00:00:55Oh, good heavens. Where are you staying?
00:00:58Probably with my mom and sister in Winfield's.
00:01:01You're so brave. All that rootlessness just gives me the hives.
00:01:06Well, actually, I am looking forward to a change of pace.
00:01:09You must be exhausted, huh? Want a coffee?
00:01:12Hudson, let's get Cara the biggest coffee you can find and make it quick, please. Thank you.
00:01:18Come sit.
00:01:19Come sit.
00:01:21Did you finish your last blog?
00:01:25It's done. I can't believe it.
00:01:28Wonderful. Congratulations.
00:01:30I'm officially free and clear to work on my novel.
00:01:33Any news?
00:01:34What?
00:01:35What happened?
00:01:37The publisher said no, didn't they?
00:01:38I knew it. I knew we should have gone with a smaller publisher.
00:01:41It's my first novel.
00:01:42You're going to be a published author come winter.
00:01:45I... I am?
00:01:47Yes.
00:01:49And that's just the advance.
00:01:55Wow!
00:01:56Why the hesitation?
00:02:00Um, it's just one small catch.
00:02:04How small?
00:02:05Listen.
00:02:06They love the mystery.
00:02:08The crazy mom character.
00:02:09The gritty sister.
00:02:11All of it.
00:02:12They just want you to add, you know,
00:02:15a love interest.
00:02:17A love interest.
00:02:19No, no, no, no.
00:02:22This book is about female relationships.
00:02:25Mothers and daughters.
00:02:26Sisters.
00:02:27The search for home.
00:02:28Self-discovery.
00:02:30Yes, you're right.
00:02:32And it can be all of those things.
00:02:34And also a romance.
00:02:37Marianne, you promised.
00:02:40You promised this wouldn't happen.
00:02:43No.
00:02:44I promised you that I wouldn't push anything on you
00:02:48that compromised the integrity of your story.
00:02:51And I don't believe this does.
00:02:53This feels like selling out.
00:02:56Yeah, well, I thought so too at first.
00:02:58But now I honestly believe
00:03:02that it's going to make the story better, Kara.
00:03:05A woman's journey to self-discovery
00:03:09doesn't have to be alone.
00:03:12She's allowed to fall in love.
00:03:14It doesn't have to be one way or the other.
00:03:18It's just not part of this story.
00:03:22Okay.
00:03:23Take some time.
00:03:26Let it percolate a bit.
00:03:28You'll figure it out.
00:03:30And if you don't,
00:03:32then we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
00:03:34Okay.
00:03:37Herculate.
00:03:40Okay.
00:03:41This is a good thing, Kara.

00:10:54just serve at the cafe there's a vegetable garden back here not yet but there could be if you build
00:11:00one true there's nothing you can't learn on the internet consider it done
00:11:10i can't believe this is real do we really get to live here yes we do
00:11:24it's just a romance
00:11:54no big deal
00:11:59think robert breadford in the horse whisperer
00:12:07okay think star-crossed lovers
00:12:13destiny or past lives
00:12:16mom what are you doing yeah maybe what is that
00:12:33oh it it sounds like construction construction no it can't be
00:12:39no
00:12:50hey hey hey
00:12:53excuse me excuse me what is going on here
00:12:57what is what is what is going on here what do you mean what are you doing on my property
00:13:11you live here we were told that it was vacant well not anymore oh nice place you got here up at this
00:13:18it's a city property it's a city property that's leased by cedar sure's power gen company
00:13:22power gen yeah we're uh we're building the dam
00:13:26what damn the hydroelectric dam that the city approved last year last year here yeah okay that
00:13:32can't be possible nobody in the town knows anything about a dam
00:13:35you know everyone in town uh yeah actually i do oh okay well well then you can ask them why they
00:13:40didn't show up to the community meeting okay well i don't know why they didn't show up to the
00:13:44meeting but i will find out uh hey hey come on i have waited 34 years to live in that house and
00:13:50write my book okay hey how am i supposed to write my book with all this jackhammering going on
00:13:55durant cara durant miss durant i am sorry for all the confusion but i'm just the engineer
00:13:59i got here last week i definitely don't make the decisions around here hey boss yeah
00:14:05andrea's got a question here about the footings for the trailer
00:14:08can you just give me a minute would you you got it boss boss
00:14:13i just oversee the construction i swear i have nothing to do selecting locations if you have a
00:14:18problem with any of the rest of it i think you should bring it up with the mayor he and the
00:14:21higher-ups are the ones you want to talk to no here this is the communications department uh
00:14:28my contacts on the back i'm riley riley nice to meet you again i don't have the uh mayor's number
00:14:36but i know mayor burns well then you have everything you need right okay boss don't get too comfortable
00:14:45because this is not gonna last long oh man you're gonna be trouble yeah it looks like it
00:15:00all right let's get back to work
00:15:07morning do you need help with that no no
00:15:11maybe fine yes what happened to drip pots
00:15:19it's a dam what's that now they're building a hydro dam right in front of our house hey i noticed
00:15:25some trucks or something hi by the way are you sure that's what it is yes that doesn't make any sense
00:15:30i mean why haven't we heard about it i have no idea but this is not good the river okay this is gonna
00:15:35change everything a lot of the businesses downtown are tourism based this is bad wait till people on main
00:15:40street find out mutiny that guy riley the hot guy from the cafe he said they had a community meeting
00:15:48and no one came he's working for the man shoot if there was a meeting we would have heard about
00:15:53it the mayor comes into the cafe every day yeah but that's what i said well what are we gonna do
00:15:58i have no idea but we're not gonna just roll over on this
00:16:04oh where are you going stop this train before it leaves the station
00:16:10please make coffee coffee got it
00:16:13yes i hear you mr ross but we cannot hand out designated parking spaces at the pharmacy
00:16:27yes you can file a complaint i'll transfer you to human resources hold on
00:16:30you can file a complaint i can file a complaint
00:16:34parent durant what a surprise hi oh sorry mayor burns office
00:16:43uh yes we do have a mailing address one second it is ah 4192 main street winfields
00:16:53you're very welcome bye now sorry about that still don't have an assistant do you not in the budget
00:17:01there but i do have this handy direct to voicemail button there so cara welcome home it's been a while
00:17:11thank you it has i don't know if you heard but i bought the ridgecrest manor oh good for you
00:17:18you and your mom both love that house we do and it would be a shame to ruin it with that new dam
00:17:24you decided to build oh right i apologize but that was put in place before you came back
00:17:31so how come nobody knows about it then apparently there was some community meeting and no one got
00:17:36invited unfortunately it was all fairly last minute but we did put something on our website
00:17:42the website mayor that sounds like shoving it under the rug to me
00:17:46now cara i know you're upset but i really believe this could be the best thing for all of us here
00:17:51we can't just add a dam the water's going to be rerouted what's the plan for that an overflow
00:17:57pool just up county road nine that old farmer's field correct okay but what about downstream
00:18:02that's all going to dry up the riverwalk the swimming hole it's all going to disappear mayor
00:18:07burns with all due respect those spots are real tourism draws the downtown core is going to suffer
00:18:14now these are valid concerns very valid concerns which i share quite frankly but the numbers that
00:18:20they presented to us as far as new jobs and revenue were quite compelling they seem to believe that
00:18:25any losses would be negligible those are just projections i've visited and written about towns
00:18:30like this in my blog for years and trust me the whole landscape of the town is going to change and
00:18:36if people knew just how bad it was going to be they would object
00:18:43there's an adjustment meeting in two weeks and the committee will take a vote
00:18:47reps from cedar shores power gen will be there it's the last chance anyone from the community will
00:18:52have to make their voices heard you could discuss your concerns there with supporting evidence of
00:18:57course i'll vote good great i will be there with evidence okay i'll be there see you there remember
00:19:06i'm gonna bring the town two weeks it's not a lot of time i know but it's something we have to start
00:19:15by getting the word out i'll make some flyers and i'll email nadia and the bingo hall nothing starts a
00:19:23rumor faster than the bingo hall i'm with you on informing everyone guys but you really need to
00:19:29get the man on your side your burn seems sympathetic i'm talking about the money honey what the power
00:19:35company uh-huh listening to community concerns is just something to endure for these kinds of companies
00:19:40but if you got someone inside the company to agree with you you may actually stand a chance no why not
00:19:46i can make a good case on my own i'm sure you can but it'll be in one year and out the other without
00:19:51the right connection i disagree maybe you should listen to leanne on this one she could be right
00:19:55yes i'm right about these kinds of things that's one of my better traits okay i don't know i mean what
00:20:01is in it for him but don't be so cynical sweetheart he could be a man of conscience he does tip 20
00:20:06it's a big ask and unless we make it make sense from a business perspective we're wasting our time what
00:20:11do you mean we start by making the case about the effects on the town and then we offer an alternative
00:20:19a solution like another location yes and we make moving the dam the better option i like it i love
00:20:27it but you don't know anything about hydro dams no but riley does so i just need to start by getting
00:20:33them invested in the town and then point them in a different direction and then he does all the rest bingo
00:20:39brilliant only brilliant if it works start with the sandwich
00:20:50bribery really there's a reason why it's so common it works go get them hun
00:21:09millor dammit
00:21:11hi is uh the boss here miss durrance what a surprise uh kara please do you have a minute
00:21:22uh sure come on in
00:21:24did you uh speak with the mayor i did he told me about the adjustment meeting and suggested i plead
00:21:43my case there oh yeah you should unfortunately we both know what kind of dog and pony show those
00:21:50meetings are and i think the town deserves more than that don't you
00:21:54is this really about the town or is it about ruining your view i'm sorry i have to ask i mean
00:22:12i'd be miffed about it too honestly if that's all this was about i'd be over it already bureaucratic
00:22:17jump rope isn't my idea of fun the people in this town raised me as much as my mom did and
00:22:23they're carrying this town on their backs they might be about to lose their jobs their businesses
00:22:27and maybe even their homes i have to at least try and help that is why i'm here i know it's hard to
00:22:33see the place you grew up in change so much but sometimes change is good not like this okay the
00:22:40river the river is the heart and soul of this town and you can't put a price on that
00:22:49what if i show you around give you the official town tour the nitty-gritty kind and then what
00:22:57and then maybe you can see how detrimental the dam is and you can back me up in the adjustment meeting
00:23:05and we can both plead our case you know i can't speak for the whole company i'm just a brick and
00:23:10mortar guy you the higher ups are more likely to listen to you than me more likely to listen to
00:23:15money than either of us i know what if i told you i could find an alternative location that could work
00:23:24for everyone and i know i don't know much about the science behind it but that's where you come in
00:23:30you've uh really thought it through and i will provide you with unlimited sandwiches for your time
00:23:38i can't guarantee any of this will work but we can try thank you what are you doing tomorrow
00:23:50nine o'clock i'll be here all right i'll see you then
00:23:54so game on
00:24:24just a train of thought
00:24:32not going on its own just type anything oh whatever you want okay
00:24:39morgan did her best to ignore him it felt like the only logical solution to a doomed encounter
00:24:47and terrible if she was honest with herself she'd admit some kind of familiar zing had passed between
00:24:55them that day but how was that possible when she'd never met him before how could her body know someone
00:25:00when her mind did not
00:25:02oh oh oh oh oh hi mary ann
00:25:09how are you
00:25:12kira darlin i'm fabulous but how about you
00:25:16now i got your message about the dam
00:25:19that's so unfortunate
00:25:20oh yeah i'm fine
00:25:23well i'm good actually um i just
00:25:25hey it's been a little distracting
00:25:28yeah immensely and um i just i don't know if i can make this whole romancing work it just it doesn't feel right
00:25:37well have you ever considered that you might be mistaking right for comfortable
00:25:42what what do you mean
00:25:44now just because romance is outside your comfort zone doesn't make it wrong
00:25:49maybe you should just try and sit with your discomfort
00:25:53sit with it you know everything going on with the house and your book all of it
00:25:58don't push it aside and distract yourself
00:26:01just sit with it
00:26:03okay
00:26:03okay yeah yeah i'll i'll try
00:26:06call me anytime i'm around

00:30:48not really i was an army brat
00:30:51i moved around a lot
00:30:52i've really settled in long enough to get to know the staples
00:30:55was that hard or
00:30:57sometimes yeah
00:30:59it forces you to go with the flow

00:31:14so that left from job to job and some were better than others and we were pretty transient
00:31:18but to her credit she always made it fun for us
00:31:21your mom sounds like a pretty interesting person

00:32:39so beautiful
00:32:41during the day the tourists come here with their kids
00:32:44and at night that's when the teens move in
00:32:48oh yeah i can see that
00:32:51were you one of them
00:32:52on occasion
00:32:54but in all honesty
00:32:57this spot's a big draw for our town
00:33:00it helps keep a lot of the downtown businesses open
00:33:04and that will probably all change once the dam goes in
00:33:08i've seen it happen in other towns in fact i wrote about this one place in my blog
00:33:13you have a blog i do the winfield's wanderer it's a travel blog
00:33:19and i started out traveling around small towns but in the last few years i've been mainly overseas

00:33:27well i just wrote my last blog post actually
00:33:31on to other things
00:33:32oh yeah i think i heard you say something about a book
00:33:35but that's right
00:33:37it's uh it's a work in progress
00:33:43anyway i know this is just another job and another town that you're driving through but

00:35:24yeah thank you my pleasure you take it we're going out in this
00:35:30best way to see the river i'll uh take your word for it have you ever canoed before
00:35:36not so much we were stationed in arkansas for about a year when i was 11.
00:35:41spent spent a lot of time in the back water mostly on fishing boats but you do know how to swim
00:35:46all right well yeah you plenty in tipping us over as long as you keep your tailbone glued to that
00:35:53center line we should be just fine hi hi captain sorry you're just bringing out my inner camp counselor
00:36:01did you actually work at a camp sure did every summer in high school why am i not surprised
00:36:08one two three
00:36:22oh thank you
00:36:41you ready ready
00:36:52you
00:37:22and i used to go out in and that's how we found the big house that's what we call the house we
00:37:41live in now and i decided right there and then i was gonna buy it one day you can understand why
00:37:47it's a great spot what about you do you have a house or i have a condo in new york and i'm never
00:37:54there so i rent it out these days i'm just living wherever the next job takes me and you like that
00:38:00well i'm used to it and it suits me for now does that mean you're gonna change your mind one day
00:38:07honestly no
00:38:17we pack a cooler full of snacks
00:38:46and come spend the whole day swimming and fishing it was the best you fish yeah i used to
00:38:53actually i think the last time i went fishing was freshman year
00:39:02they used to have a fishing derby in the summer and we'd all come out on rubber dinghies for the
00:39:08day and whoever caught the biggest fish won and that year leanne and i came up together and
00:39:12we ran into a bunch of guys from school oh here we go they paddled up to us and one of the guys
00:39:21threw a fish in our boat a live one yeah and it's still at the lure attached so it was flopping
00:39:27around and it finally got caught on leanne's life jacket you're kidding no and as you can imagine the
00:39:34guys thought it was hilarious but i was so mad i didn't want the fish to die so i yanked it off and i
00:39:40threw it in the river leanne was screaming it was a mess ten bucks says that guy asked you the prom
00:39:45oh don't tell me you actually went with him
00:39:50i ended up dating him for like seven years
00:39:54didn't end well as you probably guessed
00:39:59but don't beat yourself up we all make dumb decisions when we're young
00:40:03did you
00:40:06definitely
00:40:08a few times
00:40:13that's why i've spent so long flying solo lately
00:40:16oh
00:40:18uh
00:40:21so
00:40:22i looked at the plans for the dam
00:40:25you did
00:40:28yes and it shows that this whole section down river from my place will dry up
00:40:33for the summer months when the water levels are down yeah
00:40:36but in the springtime when they're high the river should pretty much look like this
00:40:40right
00:40:42i'm really sorry about that trust me
00:40:45and is it also true that riverfront property value decreases once a dam is installed
00:40:50that is true that house of nadia's is her retirement fund
00:40:55i see
00:40:57raleigh i'm not telling you this to make you feel bad
00:41:00i just want you and more importantly your bosses to understand that there are consequences to these
00:41:05decisions it's not all profit margins and jobs
00:41:08i hear you honestly i do
00:41:11thank you
00:41:25thank you so much
00:41:45no thank you
00:41:46that was a lot of fun
00:41:48it was
00:41:49and about the adjustment meeting
00:41:51i'd like to help you out
00:41:53if i can
00:41:54really
00:41:54yeah
00:41:55the company's got a dozen other projects just like this
00:41:57they'll be fine no matter what
00:41:59but that swimming hole and nadia's and
00:42:01and her place
00:42:02you have to at least try
00:42:04right
00:42:05right
00:42:07thank you
00:42:10uh we should probably meet up again to go over our next steps
00:42:15yeah absolutely
00:42:16but i should get back to work
00:42:18right
00:42:19after you
00:42:20hey
00:42:25oh
00:42:26hey what are you still doing here
00:42:27what do you think of this section here
00:42:29pretty sure the water flow is strong
00:42:31so we're moving the dam now
00:42:34maybe
00:42:35i thought this lunch meeting was supposed to go the other way around
00:42:38we're just looking at it
00:42:39yeah like there's gonna be fuming if he finds out about this
00:42:42and if you get fired i get fired too
00:42:43i've got 50k of student loans i need to pay off
00:42:45nobody's getting fired trust me
00:42:47once we figure this out i'll pitch in the plan and he'll come around
00:42:51you can't guarantee that
00:42:52if we can show that it'd be more profitable
00:42:54how can he say no
00:42:55i don't know
00:42:57it just seems like a huge risk to take for carla up the hill
00:43:00it's cara
00:43:00and it's not about her
00:43:03it's about doing our due diligence
00:43:06it's our job
00:43:07are you sure
00:43:08yes i'm sure come on pete
00:43:11you know i've got your back no matter what
00:43:14okay then

00:43:50we'll do
00:43:50thank you
00:43:51okay
00:43:52what is that
00:43:54all right
00:43:55i've circled a few spots that geographically could be good alternatives for the dam
00:44:01that
00:44:06that is private land owned by the hollands
00:44:11you'd have to buy them on i honestly don't think they'd sell it
00:44:13a rumor has it
00:44:15some big hotel guy tried to buy it to build on eight figures they wouldn't go for it
00:44:21all right uh uh what about here have you seen it i think i know that area it might work
00:44:30my assistant pete says that half of it is owned by the city and the other half is private
00:44:34oh wait no no that's the o'reilly property it's involved in an estate lawsuit for over 10 years right away or something
00:44:42can get pretty messy yes yeah that's no good
00:44:44what about this
00:44:45that seems like fairly steep terrain which i'm hoping means a deeper riverbed good water flow
00:44:51have you been
00:44:53that's tarson trail i've actually thought about that place too
00:44:56it could definitely work
00:44:58uh no land issues that i know of
00:45:04and uh can we go
00:45:06now
00:45:07yeah
00:45:08absolutely
00:45:09do you need it right i've got my kitten
00:45:11truck already
00:45:12sure i'll just grab us some water so i'll meet you outside
00:45:15of course
00:45:16thank you
00:45:36and stop it
00:45:37didn't do anything
00:45:39is that your kit
00:45:44uh yeah
00:45:46these fanny packs are a genius invention they're like a backpack you can access at all times
00:45:52and what is that you have
00:45:56well we use this to take the core sample we're looking for a good mix not too much sand or gravel and it can't be all clay either
00:46:04got it
00:46:04although i pretty much failed geology in school so i'll leave that part to you
00:46:09i doubt you have
00:46:10i doubt you ever failed at anything
00:46:11i doubt you ever failed at anything
00:46:12i doubt you ever failed at anything
00:46:16welcome to tarson peak
00:46:34Welcome to Tarsic Peak
00:46:40Wow, not bad at all
00:46:44Thank you, just what I need
00:46:49Oh, that's the spot that we were talking about down there
00:46:54Looks good
00:46:55I just need a couple minutes here
00:46:58Why don't you take some pictures?
00:46:59I brought the camera that I use while traveling
00:47:01That'd be great, thanks
00:47:03Oh, that'd be great
00:47:33Hey
00:47:45Hey
00:47:47Did you get what you need?
00:47:49I think so
00:47:50I have to send it to the lab, but so far everything's perfect
00:47:52This is a good find
00:47:54Great work, Captain
00:47:56It was a team effort
00:47:57I just, I hope it works
00:48:00Oh, it will
00:48:01Oh
00:48:05I, we should probably get going before it gets dark
00:48:12Uh, yeah
00:48:14Yeah, you're right
00:48:16So
00:48:32I'll put together the rest of the pitch in a PowerPoint or something
00:48:37And keep me posted on the style samples
00:48:39Will do
00:48:40We should probably get together for a dry run before the meeting
00:48:44Right
00:48:45Yeah
00:48:46Yeah, yeah, that's probably a good idea
00:48:48And maybe we could grab some dinner sometime
00:48:50My treat
00:48:51I mean, you get to pick the place
00:48:52Oh, uh

00:49:01I'll invite Leanne, my mom
00:49:03Even Mayor Burns
00:49:04We'll make a night of it
00:49:05Okay, sounds great
00:49:07Oh, and don't bring anything
00:49:08Leanne's a great cook
00:49:09Okay then

00:49:18Hey, you're here late
00:49:33Just leaving
00:49:34How's Kara?
00:49:37Saw you drop her off
00:49:38It's not what you think
00:49:41Seems kind of late for a business meeting to me
00:49:43Pete
00:49:45Come on
00:49:47See you tomorrow
00:49:48That night
00:50:05Morgan sat in front of the crackling fire
00:50:08Waiting for him to return
00:50:09She wondered if she was crazy for letting this happen
00:50:13Or maybe she was more herself than she'd ever been
00:50:17For the first time
00:50:19Instead of searching for a clear answer
00:50:21She let herself enjoy it
00:50:24And when he returned
00:50:25Any doubt she'd had about him
00:50:27Slipped away into the night
00:50:29Oh
00:50:40Oh, Kara
00:50:42It's so good
00:50:44I'm not just saying that because I'm your mother
00:50:45It's really good
00:50:47Thank you
00:50:47I think I surprised myself a bit
00:50:50To be honest
00:50:50I knew you could do it
00:50:52Well, don't get too excited
00:50:53It's not done yet
00:50:54But hey, we got pages
00:50:55Mom, you're on appetizer duty
00:50:58Okay, cool
00:50:59Oh, wow

00:51:39Thank you, Mom
00:51:40Hi, Mary Burns
00:51:42Welcome
00:51:43So glad you could make it
00:51:44Well, I couldn't pass off an opportunity
00:51:46To see inside this place
00:51:48It is a town treasure
00:51:50After all
00:51:51Annie, nice to see you
00:51:53It's nice to see you, too
00:51:54Would you like a drink?
00:51:56Sure
00:51:56Come on in
00:51:57Oh!
00:52:08Hey!
00:52:08Hey!
00:52:10I know you said not to bring anything, but
00:52:12Thank you
00:52:13Wow, you look great
00:52:15And the house
00:52:18It's awesome
00:52:18Thank you
00:52:20We're planning to tackle a few things over the next couple years
00:52:25Bathrooms and paint, that kind of thing
00:52:26But the rest I plan to keep as is
00:52:29The Duvalls did a great job of preserving the history of this place
00:52:33And I want to keep that going
00:52:35I want to keep that going
00:52:35For sure
00:52:36Are the Duvalls the old donors?
00:52:38Oh, yeah
00:52:39They were married 50 years
00:52:40Raised three kids here
00:52:41And they only moved away to be closer to family
00:52:44Well, that's inspiring
00:52:46It is
00:52:47Are you hungry?
00:52:49Leanne made enough to feed an army
00:52:51Starving
00:52:52Leanne, the chicken was delicious
00:52:55Thank you
00:52:56It's the same recipe I used for the chicken salad at the shop
00:52:59Just hot
00:53:00We know it's your favorite
00:53:03Oh, that's kind of you
00:53:04Sorry, there's no roast beef here, Riley
00:53:06Don't be
00:53:07This was great
00:53:08Kara hates it, so
00:53:09I don't hate it
00:53:12It's just not my favorite
00:53:14She was a vegetarian for five years
00:53:17College can do that to a person
00:53:19So, Greg
00:53:22Why don't you tell us what we can expect at the adjustment meeting?
00:53:26I hope it's not a lost cause
00:53:28Mom!
00:53:29I'm only asking because I want all of us to be prepared
00:53:32You know this is going to be devastating for the town if it goes through
00:53:36I mean, not to mention the value of this beautiful home
00:53:39That my daughter spent the last 25 years saving up to buy
00:53:42We're going to make a good case to my company and to the city
00:53:44And honestly, I think they'll see what we see
00:53:47We?
00:53:48Yes
00:53:49Kara has helped me come around to the idea that
00:53:52Maybe this location is not the best fit
00:53:55Well, good for you two
00:53:57I'm looking forward to your presentation
00:54:00Thank you, Mayor Burns
00:54:01But
00:54:02I'm only one person on the committee, you know
00:54:05There are five of us in total
00:54:07Good to know
00:54:08Greg
00:54:10Would you like to go see the wraparound porch?
00:54:13It has a beautiful view of the river
00:54:14Uh, sounds lovely
00:54:17Okay
00:54:18Oh, um
00:54:31I'm going to go get some dessert
00:54:34Uh, I'll be back
00:54:36Great
00:54:37You in a little bit
00:54:38We'll be here
00:54:40Okay
00:54:40Chicken was great
00:54:42Thank you for your support there
00:54:47You're welcome
00:54:49So, uh, is this where you write?
00:54:57Oh, no
00:54:57I have an office with a very nice view of your trailer
00:55:02You're kidding
00:55:05No
00:55:05Where?
00:55:09Want to see it?
00:55:12Is that it?
00:55:13Sorry
00:55:15Not your fault
00:55:17So, is this where the magic happens?
00:55:20Some days
00:55:20Other days, it's just frustrated sighs
00:55:23Hey, it's a nice spot
00:55:26When I was a kid, I used to sit out across the river
00:55:30And stare up at this place
00:55:31At this window
00:55:32Imagine myself writing here with this view
00:55:35Look, if all goes well
00:55:38We'll have that moved out of your way in no time
00:55:40Is this your book?
00:55:44It is
00:55:45Well, it's part of it, anyway
00:55:46Are you happy with it?
00:55:47Sort of
00:55:48My editor is insisting that I add in a love interest
00:55:53Oh
00:55:54Oh
00:55:55Is this named Riley?
00:55:58Uh, well, I just, uh
00:56:00Romance is, I'm not used to writing it
00:56:02And so I'm just not sure
00:56:03Why is that?
00:56:06Because romance has never been part of my strong suit
00:56:09No, because it's a prom guy
00:56:11Among others
00:56:12But I'm just, I'm not, I'm not really just used to writing
00:56:15I mean, that could be a good thing, though
00:56:18They say that's where the best stuff happens
00:56:21They say?
00:56:23Yeah, the, uh
00:56:24The online inspiration people
00:56:28I do Google inspirational quotes more than I'd like to admit
00:56:34We all do
00:56:35And hey, listen
00:56:38If you need someone to read your book
00:56:39I'd be happy to
00:56:41Wow
00:56:42Uh, I will keep that in mind
00:56:43Everything okay?
00:56:47Uh, yeah, I
00:56:48You can take it, go ahead
00:56:49Are you sure?
00:56:50Yeah
00:56:50Hey, Mr. Gallagher
00:56:57Oh, uh, yeah, I'll, I'll be there
00:57:03So?
00:57:06Turns out my boss is in town
00:57:08And, uh, I should probably go
00:57:10Is everything okay?
00:57:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
00:57:14Don't worry, don't worry
00:57:14We'll see you tomorrow
00:57:16Have you heard from Riley?
00:57:44No, I haven't heard from him since last night
00:57:47I've tried calling him, but no answer
00:57:49What time's the meeting?
00:57:50Can you do it without him if you have to?
00:57:52I could, but I don't have his lab reports
00:57:55Or his write-up on geological suitability without it
00:57:59He'll come through
00:58:00I think he's pretty invested
00:58:01I don't know, Leanne
00:58:02I have a feeling things are about to go sideways
00:58:05And I usually write about these things
00:58:08I'm sure it's nothing
00:58:10Just try him again
00:58:12So you've been doing all of this
00:58:26Without my permission
00:58:27I should have involved you sooner
00:58:29You're right
00:58:30But I was just trying to
00:58:31Present the best possible solution for it
00:58:34I've spent months preparing the assessments
00:58:36The paperwork
00:58:37Getting the permits for this location
00:58:39It's been a year in the making
00:58:40And now, within a matter of weeks
00:58:43You've undermined all of it
00:58:44You have done a lot of good work
00:58:45I just think that we may have moved too fast
00:58:48We should have done more community outreach
00:58:50More research
00:58:51If you just look at our proposal
00:58:53I think you find that the new location
00:58:55Could be more profitable
00:58:57I got the lab results back
00:58:58And the new location is more
00:58:59I'm sorry, it's too late
00:59:00We're moving ahead as is
00:59:02Sure
00:59:02Look, I know you think you're doing the right thing here
00:59:04But all you're doing is giving people false hope
00:59:07When the dam moves ahead
00:59:09As planned
00:59:10And everybody's heartbroken
00:59:12That'll be on you
00:59:14Mr. Gallagher, if you could just look
00:59:15That's enough
00:59:16Pack your things
00:59:17You're on the next flight out
00:59:19Anywhere
00:59:39No
00:59:40Gotta be kidding me
00:59:43Okay
00:59:45All right, is everyone here?
01:00:02I'll be representing the company on my own today, Greg
01:00:04Got it
01:00:06Then let's get started, shall we?
01:00:08Thanks everyone for coming
01:00:09We're here for the final adjustment meeting
01:00:11For the PowerGen development
01:00:13At 4928 Robertson Road
01:00:16Each party will have 10 minutes
01:00:18To present their arguments
01:00:20Should we find reason to delay development
01:00:22We'll take a vote
01:00:24Majority wins
01:00:25Is that clear?
01:00:28Mr. Gallagher, why don't you start us off?
01:00:31It would be my pleasure
01:00:32There you go, Greg
01:00:36As you know
01:00:39We've had over 60 years
01:00:41Of experience
01:00:42In hydrogeneration
01:00:43We've built
01:00:46Some of the most innovative dams
01:00:48In the country
01:00:49And in places
01:00:51Where they said it could never be done
01:00:52Hey
01:01:04Hi
01:01:05Did you hear Gallagher's back?
01:01:07Showed up out of the blue
01:01:08And kicked me off the project
01:01:09That's too bad
01:01:10And because I'm not a resident
01:01:11I'm not allowed to attend the meeting
01:01:13I wasn't even able to submit my lab soil report
01:01:16And Kara's got to do that alone?
01:01:18I haven't even had a chance to talk to her
01:01:19That sucks
01:01:22Pete?
01:01:25Yeah?
01:01:27Pete
01:01:27Why did you call him?
01:01:31He was going to find out one way or another
01:01:33I told you that I was going to explain everything to him
01:01:35To get him on our side
01:01:36And you also said it wasn't about the girl
01:01:38It wasn't
01:01:38Not entirely anyway
01:01:41You may have some secret next day
01:01:44That allows you to take huge risks
01:01:46But I'm just trying to keep my head above water
01:01:47If I get fired
01:01:49No job prospects
01:01:50No jobs
01:01:50No student loan payment
01:01:51You get my drift
01:01:53I'm sorry
01:01:55We understand the importance of new sustainable jobs
01:02:08For a small community
01:02:09And we're here to help
01:02:12Thank you
01:02:14Thank you, Mr. Gallagher
01:02:19Now we'd like to open the floor
01:02:22To members of the community
01:02:24I'd like to say a few words, Mayor
01:02:28By all means
01:02:31I understand Mr. Gallagher's arguments
01:02:44And I appreciate the need for sustainable employment in our community
01:02:49But at what cost?
01:02:52For the last ten years, I've traveled around the world
01:02:55Writing about small towns like ours
01:02:57Quaint little slices of paradise
01:02:59With picturesque waterfronts
01:03:01And deep community roots
01:03:03Where the landscape itself
01:03:05Is embedded in the fabric of the town
01:03:08One of my favorite places to visit
01:03:11On my way out west
01:03:12Was Silver Hills
01:03:14The first time I went out there was 2013
01:03:17And at the time, I was writing an article
01:03:20About the plethora of places along the river
01:03:22Where families gathered to celebrate
01:03:24Weddings, birthdays
01:03:26And graduations
01:03:28Where traditions going back generations
01:03:31Were carried out
01:03:32Like fishing tournaments
01:03:33Derbies
01:03:34And the annual fall fair
01:03:36Just like here
01:03:38In Winfields
01:03:39That is until
01:03:41A hydro dam was installed
01:03:44Now, did it bring steady jobs
01:03:46To the community?
01:03:48Yes
01:03:48But when I returned to that town
01:03:50Years later
01:03:51I found that the places
01:03:53That made it such a vibrant
01:03:55And welcoming community
01:03:56Had gone out of business
01:03:59Restaurants
01:04:00Bed and breakfast
01:04:02Art galleries
01:04:03And even the marina
01:04:05Had dried up and gone
01:04:06Tourism tanked
01:04:09Property values plummeted
01:04:11And residents left
01:04:12And residents left
01:04:13You see, there's a difference
01:04:16Between numbers on a page
01:04:18And the real tangible change
01:04:20You feel in a place
01:04:21When something like this happens
01:04:23I mean
01:04:24You can chop the roots off a tree
01:04:27And it's still a tree
01:04:28But eventually
01:04:30Objection
01:04:30I don't think that
01:04:33Wishy-washy metaphors
01:04:35Are helpful here
01:04:35Sir
01:04:36This is not a courtroom
01:04:38Carol, please continue
01:04:41I'm not here to scare you
01:04:43And I know we all just want to
01:04:45Feed our families
01:04:46And put our kids through school
01:04:47So what I'd like to offer
01:04:49Is a best case scenario
01:04:52Keep the jobs
01:04:54Without harming the town
01:04:56By simply moving the dam
01:04:5820 minutes downstream
01:05:00I think you all recognize
01:05:02Tarsan Trail
01:05:03Putting the dam here
01:05:05Would move flooding
01:05:07Dry zones
01:05:07Or any other side effects
01:05:09Away from the community
01:05:10Saving all the treasured spots
01:05:13That make our town special
01:05:14And make us
01:05:16Who we are
01:05:18Ms. Durant
01:05:18I appreciate what you're trying to do
01:05:22But have any actual assessments
01:05:24Even been done on this land?
01:05:25No, but I was assured
01:05:27By a very reliable source
01:05:30That this location is ideal
01:05:32Oh, a reliable source
01:05:34Where are they?
01:05:38I don't know
01:05:39Mayor Burns
01:05:40I think that Ms. Durant
01:05:42Has good reason to be upset
01:05:44I mean, God knows
01:05:44I'd be angry too
01:05:45If something like this
01:05:46Came along and ruined my view
01:05:47No, that is not
01:05:49What this is about
01:05:50But we cannot undo months
01:05:50Months of work
01:05:52Over a site that hasn't even
01:05:53Been properly vetted
01:05:54By a professional
01:05:54Meanwhile, in this town
01:05:56There are people expecting this work
01:05:58And frankly
01:05:59I think it would be irresponsible
01:06:02To postpone that
01:06:03Over one citizen's objections
01:06:05She's not the only one concerned
01:06:07We are all worried
01:06:08My business is at risk
01:06:10Mine too
01:06:11And so is my home
01:06:13Like I said, Mr. Gallagher
01:06:15These people
01:06:17Are much more
01:06:19Than numbers
01:06:20On a spreadsheet
01:06:21Thank you for your time, Cara
01:06:23If that's all
01:06:30The committee will now
01:06:33Take a vote
01:06:34All in favor of
01:06:36Postponing construction
01:06:37On the dam
01:06:38All in favor of moving forward
01:06:46Well, there you have it
01:06:53Construction of the hydroelectric dam
01:06:56At 4928 Robertson Road
01:06:58Will move forward
01:07:00As scheduled
01:07:00Thank you
01:07:03This project's gonna be right
01:07:10Congratulations
01:07:11Thank you
01:07:13I'm sorry, Cara
01:07:15I'm sorry too, Mom
01:07:17Cara, what happened
01:07:18With the lab reports?
01:07:20Where's Rowley?
01:07:20I don't know
01:07:21Maybe he
01:07:23Had a change of heart
01:07:25That's really too bad
01:07:28It really is
01:07:29She should have seen it coming
01:07:36She hardly knew him
01:07:37After all
01:07:38Maybe that zing she felt
01:07:39Was actually a warning sign
01:07:41More like an electric fence
01:07:43Warning its inhabitants
01:07:44Not to escape
01:07:45Or else
01:07:46Hi, honey
01:07:48Oh, you're making progress
01:07:53I see
01:07:53Is this the new ending?
01:07:56Yep
01:07:56Doesn't seem like a happy one
01:07:59It's a realistic one
01:08:02Ah
01:08:03Cara
01:08:05Don't let the situation
01:08:09With Riley ruin your book
01:08:10Mom
01:08:12This has nothing
01:08:13To do with Riley
01:08:15I just don't think it's right
01:08:17That every couple
01:08:17Ends up together in the end
01:08:18That's not real life
01:08:19Have you talked to him?
01:08:20Nope
01:08:20Just another man
01:08:22Coming up short
01:08:23When you need him most
01:08:24But you don't even know
01:08:25What he has to say
01:08:25Don't shut down so easily
01:08:27I'm not
01:08:28I'm writing, aren't I?
01:08:31Yeah
01:08:31I should probably get back to it
01:08:34Okay
01:08:36I did it
01:09:00You finished it
01:09:02Took me all night
01:09:03But I just sent it to Miriam
01:09:05It's great, honey
01:09:07Oh
01:09:08Hi
01:09:17Hey
01:09:17Hey
01:09:17I'm sorry about yesterday
01:09:22I called you a few times
01:09:24I know
01:09:25I had to work on my book
01:09:26I see
01:09:28Look
01:09:30I wanted to explain
01:09:31Doesn't matter anymore
01:09:32We lost the vote
01:09:34Well, it matters to me
01:09:35I need you to know
01:09:37That I didn't bail on purpose
01:09:39My boss showed up last minute
01:09:41Pete told him about our plan
01:09:42And before I could explain everything
01:09:44I was reassigned to another project
01:09:45Okay
01:09:47I was basically banned from the meeting
01:09:48And I had no time to explain
01:09:50I'm sorry
01:09:52All right
01:09:53All right
01:09:54Kara, come on
01:09:55What else is there to say?
01:09:57Please
01:09:57You gotta know
01:09:58I'd never leave you hanging out to dry like that
01:10:00How would I know that?
01:10:01We barely know each other
01:10:02That's not true
01:10:03Getting to know you these past weeks
01:10:06There's something between us
01:10:08Something real
01:10:09Really?
01:10:10Couldn't have meant that much
01:10:11If it was so easy to give up
01:10:12Give up
01:10:13I didn't give up
01:10:13I got reassigned
01:10:14Did you even put up a fight?
01:10:16Because it feels like to me
01:10:17That the second things started going off the rails
01:10:19You threw in the towel
01:10:21That is not what happened
01:10:22Look
01:10:22I am sorry
01:10:23That I let you down
01:10:24You didn't just let me down
01:10:26You let down my family
01:10:27And everybody in this town
01:10:29Kara
01:10:29No
01:10:30You should go
01:10:34Is that what you really want?
01:10:45Yes
01:10:45And now if you'll excuse me
01:10:49I'm gonna go enjoy my last few hours on the riverfront
01:10:52Before they get to work
01:10:54Here darling
01:11:23It's me
01:11:23Hi
01:11:24Mary Ann
01:11:25I got the pages
01:11:27You were quick with this re-rate
01:11:29So
01:11:30What did you think?
01:11:32It was thrilling really
01:11:33But
01:11:34But
01:11:35Kara
01:11:36The couple needs
01:11:38To end up together
01:11:39Don't you think?
01:11:40You've done such a good job
01:11:43Of
01:11:43Setting them up as this perfect pair
01:11:45The yin and the yang
01:11:47The puzzle pieces coming together
01:11:49All that good stuff
01:11:50And then what?
01:11:51They're not getting together?
01:11:52It just made me mad
01:11:55That's not real life
01:11:57Mary Ann
01:11:57Don't be so cynical
01:11:59My love
01:12:00Now I've been married to my Craig
01:12:02For
01:12:03I think it's 31 years
01:12:05That's impressive
01:12:06That's impressive
01:12:06Congratulations
01:12:08Yeah well what I'm saying is
01:12:11It's possible
01:12:12So you won't accept them
01:12:15As is
01:12:15I'm not gonna say no
01:12:18But I'd like you to reconsider it
01:12:21I have faith in you okay?
01:12:24Okay
01:12:24Now I've gotta rush to a lunch meeting
01:12:27And we'll chat later
01:12:28Alright?
01:12:29Ciao
01:12:30Tell me what you think and don't lie
01:12:47Honestly mum
01:12:50Nailed it
01:12:52For real
01:12:53We should sell these at the restaurant
01:12:54Great
01:12:55Kara
01:12:56Kara
01:12:56What did you think?
01:12:59Kara
01:13:00What?
01:13:01You okay?
01:13:02Yeah
01:13:03Yeah I'm good
01:13:03Yeah really?
01:13:05Because I'm getting major Eeyore vibes here
01:13:07I don't know why I'm so upset
01:13:10I'm living my dream
01:13:12I got us a house we've always wanted
01:13:14I'm gonna be a puddle shotter soon
01:13:15We're all together
01:13:16And something's missing
01:13:18More like someone
01:13:19What?
01:13:22No
01:13:22I barely know him
01:13:25Doesn't matter
01:13:25And he's not that good of a guy
01:13:27That's not fair
01:13:28Did you even listen to him before you shoot him away?
01:13:30Of course I did
01:13:31Well maybe you should go talk to him again
01:13:33No
01:13:33No there's no point
01:13:35I have a lot on my plate
01:13:36And I will just get over it
01:13:38Ugh
01:13:39Why do you have to get over it?
01:13:43Why don't you try?
01:13:45Putting down the to-do list
01:13:46And letting yourself live a little
01:13:49What if it doesn't work out?
01:13:59All that time will have been wasted
01:14:01It'll all be for nothing
01:14:02Sweetie
01:14:03It is never all for nothing
01:14:05No
01:14:08No
01:14:09I don't want to set myself back
01:14:10I'll be here for you
01:14:12Then you'll do it
01:14:13That's just who you are
01:14:15But you can have a relationship
01:14:16And a successful career
01:14:19If that-if that Duvall's did it
01:14:21You love him, don't you?
01:14:28What?
01:14:29Ha, I knew it
01:14:30Now you gotta go get him
01:14:31Yes
01:14:32But, uh, but
01:14:33No buts
01:14:34Whatever happens
01:14:36It'll be fine
01:14:37No matter what
01:14:38Right?
01:14:42Yeah
01:14:42Take the cookies just in case
01:14:43Not really getting off on the right foot
01:14:45If I'm constantly driving him with food
01:14:47But it works
01:14:48That is true
01:14:48Go
01:14:50Good luck
01:14:51You got this
01:14:54Go on
01:14:54Honestly
01:14:59I hope it works
01:15:11Me too

01:15:52I'm on the next flight out myself
01:15:54Oh
01:15:57I see
01:16:00You want me to tell him you came by?

01:16:43...
01:16:44What happened?
01:17:14He went back to Chicago.
01:17:16He did.
01:17:18Well, maybe we can find out where he's staying and we can-
01:17:22No.
01:17:23It's too late.
01:17:25And I've got a lot of work to do.
01:17:44Kara, this is fantastic.
01:17:50Not done yet.
01:17:51Would you like a cup of tea?
01:17:52More like a pot of coffee.
01:17:53And no cinnamon this time.
01:17:56Got it.
01:17:58During the day, it was easier.
01:18:00Morgan found relief at work and catching up with friends.
01:18:03But at night, that familiar, all-consuming wave crashed over her.
01:18:08Drowning out everything.
01:18:10Until it was just her.
01:18:12In the dark, thinking about him until sunrise.
01:18:17They knew the odds were against them.
01:18:19That her headstrong stubbornness and his tendency towards isolation were going to be difficult to overcome.
01:18:26But they also knew.
01:18:27That place that you sing to when things spin out of control.
01:18:31That deep knowing that has tied them together all these years and never weathered.
01:18:36It is there.
01:18:37They go to sew themselves back together.
01:18:40Growing stronger together.
01:18:42With every stitch.
01:18:44How's it going?
01:18:49I think I'm done.
01:18:51What?
01:18:52Really?
01:18:53Yes.
01:18:54You must be so relieved.
01:18:55Congratulations.
01:18:59Hi, Mayor Burns.
01:19:01What can I get you?
01:19:02A latte, please.

01:19:12What are you talking about?

01:19:15We just got word in the office.
01:19:17Apparently, Riley discovered some discrepancies in the environmental assessments and the existing permits are now void.
01:19:23What?
01:19:24Yes.
01:19:25Our agenda has decided to put the project on hold until they can review the new site.
