00:00When it comes to artificial intelligence, the EU is doubling down on its mission.
00:05Curb misuse without crushing innovation.
00:08This weekend, the second round of its landmark AI Act takes effect.
00:13From August 2, member states now have to inform the Commission
00:15about which authorities will be in charge of policing AI compliance under the new law.
00:21Generative AI tools like those used to write text, make images or compose music
00:26must reveal the data used to train their models.
00:29As the EU puts it,
00:31The sources used to train general-purpose AI model that is made available to users in Europe
00:36will have to be clearly documented.
00:38If they are protected by copyright, the authors will have to be remunerated
00:42and above all, the consent will have to be obtained.
00:46Tech giants like OpenAI and Google have agreed to follow the EU's voluntary code of conduct,
00:52but others such as Meta are pushing back.
00:55Industry critics say the rules could create confusion for companies.
00:59Especially around intellectual property and safety requirements.
01:05What AI requires is a great deal of good faith.
01:08That is to say, demonstrating that we are trying to do things right.
01:12It does not mean doing everything perfectly,
01:14since there are still unresolved issues on the research side.
01:18All this is just the beginning.
01:21Next year, so-called high-risk AI used in areas like law enforcement, education or critical infrastructure
01:27will face stiff requirements before being allowed on the European market.
