00:00Hello there, welcome to the whole fresh month of the month of August
00:03and when we're going to talk about various sexual and reproductive dysfunction
00:08after the age of ageing in men.
00:11What is more appropriate to talk about is what happens to fertility as men get older.
00:23So how old is getting older?
00:25In fact, by definition, after the age of 40, actually there are some ageing processes happening in men
00:32and this is probably because of the hormonal changes that actually reduce the active form of testosterone.
00:39And what impact will that have on spermatogenesis?
00:43In fact, it will lower the sperm quality as far as the motility is concerned,
00:48the number is concerned and also, of course, sexual desire and erectile function as men get older.
00:57But that doesn't stop men from fathering a child.
01:01We all know famous people who actually father a child at advancing age.
01:07Most people talk about Mick Jagger.
01:09Actually, Mick Jagger is relatively young as compared to the others
01:13because he fathered a child at the age of 73, just like Charlie Chaplin.
01:19Other people father a child, probably top of the group, is somebody like Al Pacino.
01:25Al Pacino and Robert De Niro all father children at the age of 83 and 79.
01:31And others also follow suit, actually father a child.
01:35Is there any risk in that?
01:37In fact, the risk has been documented to show various forms of condition that may affect the next generation.
01:45Interestingly enough, people who have got elderly father who actually are in the next generation
01:52will have a lower sperm count.
01:54So, we'll have some degree of fertility issue.
01:57But that's not the main issue here.
01:59The main issue here is actually children of the advancing father actually may have problems with autism and spectrum
02:08and also may have problems with schizophrenia and also ADHD, which is attention deficit disorders.
02:17However, the vast majority of these children are actually healthy
02:21because quite a significant prognostic factor of this fertility actually depends on the mother and the maternal age as well.
02:32So, in summary, as men get older, of course their fertility will deteriorate
02:38but the fertility doesn't really need to deteriorate so much in order to make a man infertile
02:44because we only need one healthy sperm
02:46and although that healthy sperm may be healthy to create a baby
02:51but sometimes DNA fragmentation itself may actually result in the offspring
02:56having some issues with schizophrenia and also ADHD and autism and sometimes fertility problem.
03:04For the following week, we're going to talk about what age does to the enlarged prostate.
03:10We're not talking about cancer here.
03:12We're just talking about when the prostate get enlarged
03:15what happened to men who has got aging process.
03:18Stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
