Sharpe is asked by the governor to perform one last task while in India. He is to escort a Frenchwoman to her fiancée at an outpost. Sharpe agrees, little knowing he is walking into a rebellion with the instigators quite close to home.

00:00:00The End
00:00:30Come on, come on!
00:01:30You, soldier, dance with me.
00:01:42I do not dance.
00:01:44Do not, sir? Or cannot?
00:01:47Will not, then, if it please you.
00:01:50It does not please me.
00:01:51I am resolved to step a measure with every man here present
00:01:58and have a wager of my friends to do the same.
00:02:02What do you say to that?
00:02:04You lose.
00:02:05I have not lost your touch with the ladies, then.
00:02:16What the hell are we doing here, anyway?
00:02:18You saw the dispatch.
00:02:19Aye, the governor requests your presence.
00:02:21But why? I thought we were headed home.
00:02:23We are, Pat.
00:02:24We are, I promise.
00:02:26Colonel Sharp.
00:02:36What are you doing, sir?
00:02:41Damn the man.
00:02:43Damn him to hell.
00:02:44God rot all quill suckers.
00:02:50Huh?
00:02:51We sweat and bleed and die upon their whim.
00:02:54And for what things?
00:02:56It's gratitude you're after,
00:02:58and you've joined the wrong army.
00:03:00You may well be right at that.
00:03:02Colonel?
00:03:04Sharp.
00:03:06Richard Sharp.
00:03:06Count Vladimir Alekseevich Dragomirov.
00:03:10Third native horse.
00:03:12You have business with the governor?
00:03:14Tread lightly.
00:03:15Sagefeld is a wily old devil.
00:03:20Your Excellency, Colonel Sharp.
00:03:23Colonel?
00:03:23His Excellency, by Count Sagefeld.
00:03:27I'm told you were no for mischief, Colonel Sharp.
00:03:30Told, sir.
00:03:32His grace, Lord Wellington.
00:03:34Of this late rebellion,
00:03:37only recently put down,
00:03:39we find ourselves, alas,
00:03:40already facing fresh dangers.
00:03:43Bandit sharp in the high hills,
00:03:45under thrall of a cutthroat named Chittu,
00:03:47causing no end of havoc with company operations.
00:03:50Villagers put to fire and soared,
00:03:53the harvest disrupted.
00:03:54I'm sorry to hear it.
00:03:56Indeed.
00:03:58A company squadron under Count Dragomirov
00:04:01has been dispatched to find this Chittu.
00:04:04And so far, without success,
00:04:07you are requested
00:04:08upon the highest authority
00:04:10to do better.
00:04:12I am no longer in the service of His Majesty.
00:04:15My business in India concluded
00:04:17I am for Calcutta and England.
00:04:19I cannot persuade you.
00:04:20Well, perhaps then,
00:04:25might at least you be prevailed upon
00:04:27to perform one last duty,
00:04:30in which I assure you
00:04:31there is no peril to yourself.
00:04:34Aye.
00:04:36If I can.
00:04:38I have in my care
00:04:39a property,
00:04:40like yourself,
00:04:42bound for the north.
00:04:45May I look to you
00:04:46for its safe conveyance?
00:04:50Aye.
00:04:50Very well.
00:04:52Your word?
00:04:55And what is it,
00:04:56this property?
00:04:58Ah, Colonel Sharp.
00:04:59I have the honour
00:05:01to present
00:05:01Mademoiselle Marie-Angélique Bonnet.
00:05:11Who is she?
00:05:12Damned if I know.
00:05:14Fiance is a company major
00:05:15named Joubert,
00:05:17stationed at Calingong.
00:05:18Where in God's arse
00:05:21is Calum gone?
00:05:22Company Hill Station.
00:05:24On the way,
00:05:25Sedgefield says.
00:05:46Come on.
00:05:48Come on.
00:06:18Major Shrednik's up.
00:06:48Marvellous, marvellous.
00:07:02Who commands this column?
00:07:03Aye, sir, no man, yet all men.
00:07:09We are, you might say, a regular Captain Copperthorn's crew.
00:07:13The gentleman asks a civil question of you, Quilter. He expects an answer in kind in none of your riddles.
00:07:21What he means to say, sir, after his fashion, is the matter would depend on whether you meant company troops or kings.
00:07:27We number both amongst the column.
00:07:29Your office will do for now.
00:07:30Very good.
00:07:31I'd be glad if our mounts could be fed and watered.
00:07:34And someone to see to the ladies' comforts also.
00:07:37Quilter, diva, this way, gentlemen.
00:07:40How is it you come to be travelling along company troops?
00:07:43I was ordered, sir.
00:07:44There's bandits hereabouts, unto all manner of heathen deviltry.
00:07:47Soon as other troops venture forth in small bands, it was thought best to combine all soldiery, same-wise bound, into one column.
00:07:54Along with any commonality of a like destination.
00:07:56Mind your treads, sir, that's elephant shit.
00:08:02And these gentlemen were hopeful to speak with you, sir.
00:08:05Very good, Colin Wormwood.
00:08:06Will you be wanting for me to remain, sir, in case there has any questions?
00:08:09I believe I'm sufficient to the task.
00:08:11Very good, sir.
00:08:17You'll forgive Color Wormwood's familiarity, gentlemen.
00:08:20Being not long in India, I find myself beneath his wing.
00:08:23Inside Beauclair, 69th foot.
00:08:25Colonel Richard Sharp, late of the South Essex.
00:08:29Sergeant Major Harper.
00:08:31Your pardon, Colonel?
00:08:32You may dispense formalities, Mr. Beauclair.
00:08:34I hold no present commission.
00:08:36Mr. Harper and myself are about some private business upon the Governor's request.
00:08:40And yourself?
00:08:42I command a small prisoner escort, sir.
00:08:45Bound for Calcutta.
00:08:46I'd hardly call such numbers small, Mr. Beauclair.
00:08:50What have you in your charge? Some regicide?
00:08:54No, sir. You must apprehend me.
00:08:57For the most part, what you see here is the royal train of the Maharani Padmini Devi, or Jehala War.
00:09:05A princess?
00:09:06Her Highness travels to Pancot, under protection-accompanied detachment.
00:09:10At Subadar Pillai commanding.
00:09:12As for regicide, I fear my prisoner is in no means so worthy of note.
00:09:17So what was the offence?
00:09:19The murder of an officer, sir.
00:09:21In furtherance to robbery of the regimental stores.
00:09:24Oh.
00:09:25The Commissariat sets great store by its spoons, so it does.
00:09:30Subadar Pillai, then.
00:09:32He's in charge of the safety of this column.
00:09:35Do it.
00:09:37Do it.
00:09:40Do it, man.
00:09:41Not like that. You'll kill him.
00:09:44You've got the blade the wrong way around.
00:09:46You need to line it up along the way, not across here.
00:09:48Are you a farrier?
00:09:50I know how to bleed an horse without killing it.
00:09:52What are you waiting for, then? Do it.
00:09:57Here I'm down.
00:10:07Keep the booger steady, pal.
00:10:16It's fine.
00:10:17Easy, boy.
00:10:19Take it nice and easy. Easy now.
00:10:21Just keep him there, keep him there.
00:10:51I reckon he'll live.
00:11:03We are most grateful, Mr...
00:11:06Sharp, Colonel Sharp, Sergeant Major Harper.
00:11:12For future, a wee bit of ginger added to his feet might help ma'am.
00:11:17Ask what reward you will of Subidar Pillai for your service. It shall be met.
00:11:22Ah, the beast out of his misery is reward enough, ma'am.
00:11:25You'll be glad to have some words with Subidar.
00:11:33Yes, scum.
00:11:36I was wondering, Subidar, if you have any sound intelligence as to the bandits ranging here about.
00:11:43I have a certain cargo in my charge, and I'm anxious for his safety.
00:11:48You mean to leave me here, in the company of common soldiers?
00:11:52Good practice, I'd have thought. You sit to marry one, aren't you?
00:11:56Major Joubert is a gentleman.
00:11:58Yeah, and God help him.
00:12:00The company officer has given me his word.
00:12:06Provision will be made to see you safely to Callum Gong.
00:12:09You gave your word to Vicomte Sedgefield?
00:12:12If there are bandits in these hills, then this column will afford you far better safety than me or Sergeant Harper.
00:12:17The criminal's right, ma'am.
00:12:19I'm glad of it. At least I shall no longer be kept awake by your snoring.
00:12:24I don't snore.
00:12:25Oh, like a cart horse.
00:12:27And since you are set upon your fait accompli, there is nothing further to say, Monsieur.
00:12:33Mm.
00:12:37She took it rather well, I thought.
00:12:42Callum Sharp.
00:12:44Mrs. Rodinick.
00:12:46My husband's the Major of the Engineers.
00:12:48I am certain that he would wish for me to present his compliments and an invitation to dine with us this evening.
00:12:53Well, that's really kind of you, ma'am, but I'm afraid...
00:12:56We'd be delighted, Mr. Harper, ma'am.
00:12:59Oh, well, until this evening, then.
00:13:02There.
00:13:05I was going to say no.
00:13:07You all right?
00:13:08Listen, you need to see a surgeon.
00:13:09No, I need no such thing.
00:13:11I'll speak to people, I.
00:13:13What?
00:13:14A company surgeon.
00:13:15I'd rather let you loose with a hammer and fleam.
00:13:19I'll be all right, Richard.
00:13:20Truly, I will.
00:13:22Okay.
00:13:23If I just care.
00:13:25Yeah.
00:13:26We're bedding down here.
00:13:27Yeah.
00:13:32There's some strangers who walk with both people in colour.
00:13:35No business of yours, Quilter.
00:13:37See the prisoners fed and watered.
00:13:38You won't have none.
00:13:39No less.
00:13:40It must be offered.
00:13:41The King's regulation's very clear on this point.
00:13:43So look alive.
00:13:45Shhhh.
00:13:46Shhhh.
00:13:47Shhhh.
00:13:53Rung your vittles.
00:13:56You want some more, don't you?
00:13:58It's a matter of indifference to me.
00:14:00but I must fetch him here
00:14:02and here as I am bid, no matter.
00:14:09Look, Corp.
00:14:11It's not worth taking on.
00:14:14When we get back to the lines,
00:14:15colour will speak on your part.
00:14:17That being done,
00:14:19seems to me you leave a wrangle you won't
00:14:20and there's an end on it.
00:14:22What a comfort you are to job.
00:14:28What's your name then, Corporal?
00:14:31Barabbas.
00:14:33Bloody hell.
00:14:34Thought Dick were bad.
00:14:36Barabbas.
00:14:37Bible name isn't it.
00:14:39I had it of a priest at the Scottish Mission.
00:14:41Oh, I found it.
00:14:47No shame in that.
00:14:50Half the world we've got without a ceremony.
00:14:53Not always the worst off either.
00:14:57Deserve it, did I?
00:14:58The officer you killed.
00:14:59Don't many as I have.
00:15:04A bit of robbery, mind.
00:15:07Regimental stores.
00:15:09And sooner an honest murderer
00:15:11than a man has thieves off his mates.
00:15:13I expect you'll tell me you're neither.
00:15:18Never met a guilty man.
00:15:25Colonel Sharp.
00:15:27Mr. Harper.
00:15:29You honour our table.
00:15:30Thank you, Major.
00:15:31Now, if I may, the Reverend Watkin, Ensign Beauclair, you know.
00:15:36My wife, of course.
00:15:38Miss Bonnet.
00:15:39And I are already acquainted.
00:15:42Of course.
00:15:43Well, we wait only upon...
00:15:46Oh, there he is.
00:15:47Good evening, Subodan.
00:15:48My apologies, Major.
00:15:49I will sit in to Bonnet.
00:15:50No!
00:15:52Take cover!
00:15:58Go on!
00:15:59Go on!
00:15:59Go on!
00:16:02Speak back to me!
00:16:04Speak tonight to me!
00:16:05Follow armor!
00:16:06Defender camp!
00:16:07Go on!
00:16:37Shit, who's men?
00:17:00Fuck is normal.
00:17:07What's the bill, Mr. Booklayer?
00:17:30Her Highness and the commonality are all accounted for, sir.
00:17:32Of company troops, but four are numbered dead, including the surgeon.
00:17:39Six are wounded, of which two, including Subirapalai, are like to die.
00:17:44And your own section?
00:17:45Not a man come to harm, sir.
00:17:47But Color Wormwood confies they gave good account of themselves.
00:17:49Though I confess, with all that befell, I'm hard-pressed to order events.
00:17:59The fire and the fighting, the horses and all.
00:18:03Your first action?
00:18:05Yes, sir.
00:18:08You did well.
00:18:09I would hope so, sir.
00:18:13I was, you see, born to a soldier.
00:18:16Indeed.
00:18:17Perhaps you met him.
00:18:19You will have heard of him almost certainly.
00:18:22He was the man brevetted Major at Vittoria for capturing Marshal Jordan's baton.
00:18:28I don't believe I know him.
00:18:32You'd have taken to him, sir.
00:18:33Well, he was very brave, much admired by his men.
00:18:39He was, Mr. Baton.
00:18:43He fell, sir.
00:18:46At Ronsauval's.
00:18:49When I was a boy.
00:18:50There was, I think, and it was you and me that came across the Marshal's baton of Vittoria.
00:19:05Abandoned in the baggage train along with King Joe's Royal Jake's Pot.
00:19:09Yeah.
00:19:10How many memories off, Pat?
00:19:14Common effect of advancing years, I understand.
00:19:17I have posted pickets, but their throats were cut.
00:19:28I should have done more.
00:19:30You did all that could be expected.
00:19:34I must beg of you a service, Colonel.
00:19:37Will you stay with the column?
00:19:40At least as far as Kalim gone.
00:19:41It's a lot to ask, I know, but it's only two days, March.
00:19:49Besides, I shall rest a lot easier knowing a senior officer were among us.
00:20:00You have Major Tridentic.
00:20:02An engineer, Colonel.
00:20:04There's no soldier.
00:20:05So, with our Pilar is correct, Colonel.
00:20:12Better by far, the men have someone of both rank and martial reputation to look to at such a time.
00:20:18It may depend on my support.
00:20:20In every particular.
00:20:22I'm grateful.
00:20:24Gentlemen.
00:20:25Caller Wormwood!
00:20:27Make ready the column to move out.
00:20:30Mr. Bruckler.
00:20:30Whatever instruction you receive of Colonel Sharp, you may take as if the order on my own.
00:20:37Would you say so, sir?
00:20:41Within the hour.
00:20:42Caller Wormwood.
00:20:52What could I say?
00:20:55Huh?
00:20:56Do you hear me complaining?
00:20:57Just so far as this hill station.
00:21:03Two days.
00:21:05Then we're away.
00:21:07We'll see.
00:21:16Yep.
00:21:16We'll see you.
00:21:19We'll see you.
00:21:24Hit it.
00:21:27All right.

00:25:10What the hell do you think you're about?
00:25:20I wanted to ride.
00:25:22I can see that.
00:25:24Perhaps you forgot.
00:25:26But only last night we were attacked by Chittu's bandies.
00:25:28They will be far behind us by now.
00:25:30I wouldn't be so sure.
00:25:31And if I can track you, so can they.
00:25:34I will return presently.
00:25:37Now, madam.
00:25:38At once.
00:25:40God knows I didn't look for this duty.
00:25:47But for better or worse, I'm responsible for your safety.
00:25:51On hand me.
00:25:53You are rude, sir.
00:25:55You are rude and ignorant and an uncouth brute.
00:25:58And you, madam, are a spoiled, willful, petulant and selfish young fool.
00:26:04Selfish.
00:26:05If you will not take thought to your own well-being,
00:26:08then at least consider your fellow travellers.
00:26:10I've been up to Lucy and the column safe to Kalimgong.
00:26:13We are chasing you up and down the country.
00:26:15Now get on your mount and follow me back.
00:26:17Or will you have me carry it?
00:26:22You would not dare.
00:26:23I was done with my ride anyway.
00:26:29To your duty now, boy.
00:26:42You flow like the river Liffey.
00:26:44Sir, major stop.
00:26:52Sir, major stop.
00:26:54You're being attacked, your highness.
00:27:08Stay here and keep our side.
00:27:32I will do no such thing.
00:27:33If I want to see your life, do as you're damn well told.
00:27:58Fall back! Fall back!
00:28:01Open it to me!
00:28:03I told you it was to stay put!
00:28:30I could use a right foot.
00:28:31Not a bloody chance.
00:28:33We need every man we can get.
00:28:35Come on!
00:28:40Let's go!
00:28:42Let's go!
00:28:43Get away!
00:28:46Oh, my God.
00:29:16But I was never so glad to see a cavalryman.
00:29:20May I impose them upon your hospitality for some short while?
00:29:25At least until our mounts are rested and we may continue the pursuit.
00:29:30Aye, and welcome.
00:29:35Caller Wormwood, you'll see your provisions.
00:29:38I must take account of our losses.
00:29:42Caller Wormwood!
00:29:43Sir.
00:29:44I want that prisoner secured now.
00:29:46This instant.
00:29:48You heard him?
00:29:50Take him away.
00:29:52Oh, I see the hand of God is upon you still.
00:29:56Corporal Hakesville.
00:29:59What do you call him?
00:30:01Corporal Hakesville.
00:30:03The luckiest soldier I ever met.
00:30:07Hakesville.
00:30:07God, I'll bloody my say.
00:30:11Take it easy, please.
00:30:13Oh, please.
00:30:17Hakesville.
00:30:19Enough now.
00:30:20Come on.
00:30:23Hakesville.
00:30:24Where'd you get your name, then, eh?
00:30:25Stand off.
00:30:26Stand off, Richard.
00:30:27Better I burst.
00:30:30The fine jest is that.
00:30:31Stand off, please.
00:30:33In here, Pat.
00:30:34Hakesville.
00:30:36Hakesville!
00:30:37And you'll get him a rifle?
00:30:38What's the matter, you bastard?
00:30:41Cat got your tonk.
00:30:43I'm talking to you.
00:30:45Where'd you get your name?
00:30:46For white man like you.
00:30:48Aye.
00:30:49Redcoat, was he?
00:30:50Sergeant.
00:30:51I know he was.
00:30:53Obadiah.
00:30:55Thought as much.
00:30:57Thief.
00:30:58Murderer.
00:30:59Rapist.
00:31:01That was your father, Barabbas.
00:31:02Well, I'll not leave it to a court-martial in the provosts.
00:31:09I'll make an end of your hearing now.
00:31:11Colonel, what's this man's father to you?
00:31:13He killed my wife.
00:31:18Killed her.
00:31:21Left our daughter motherless.
00:31:24Now, be content.
00:31:26But for all that's served, this is not right.
00:31:29What's your business, Major?
00:31:30Any man who comes between me and that bastard, I'll kill him.
00:31:39Out of the way, Pat.
00:31:41I can't let you do it, Richard.
00:31:42Stand aside, damn you.
00:31:44You'll have to put me down first.
00:31:45I regret I cannot spare any of my men to your escort.
00:32:06But you may depend, with my squadron in pursuit.
00:32:11These devils will trouble you no further.
00:32:14So from here, where will you go?
00:32:17Kalamgong.
00:32:19The company garrison.
00:32:21You should be safe there.
00:32:22I skulled my wife.
00:32:41Oh-ya-no-no-no-no-no-no-no.
00:32:43Hey!
00:32:44Ah-h-ha, hey, hey!
00:32:45Hey!
00:32:45You should step down from the waggy, Miss Bonny.
00:33:09Take the air a while.
00:33:15How is he?
00:33:20He's failing.
00:33:21I do not know how much longer he can last without proper care.
00:33:25I'm sure you're doing all that can be done.
00:33:28We shall make Kalim Gong tomorrow.
00:33:31The Superdard shall have a surgeon.
00:33:34And you, your Major Joubert.
00:33:38I am obliged to you, Colonel, for your action during the attack.
00:33:44Obliged?
00:33:44I am reluctant to be in your debt.
00:33:48Having been daughter to a soldier, I care little for the profession.
00:33:54And upon one thing at least, we're in agreement.
00:33:58As for any obligation, I did my duty, ma'am.
00:34:03Nothing more.
00:34:04Have you not had enough excitement for one day?
00:34:19He's bad blood, Pat.
00:34:24Less than any, none of it.
00:34:27God knows, Richard.
00:34:28I've never taken another man's side against you.
00:34:30And I'm not going to start now.
00:34:32But you're wrong.
00:34:33I'm not though.
00:34:34And this, yeah, you are.
00:34:35Just keep him from my view.
00:34:42One more day, Pat.
00:34:44One more day.
00:34:45And then I'm rid of him.
00:34:47Miss Bonnie, Hakeswell,
00:34:49the whole damn lot.
00:34:50Oh, no.
00:35:04Don't go.
00:35:04Ah.
00:35:05Ah.
00:35:08Oh.
00:35:09Oh.
00:35:09Oh, my God.
00:35:39Is there difficulty?
00:35:41Merely a precautionary measure, ma'am.
00:35:43Mr Harper and myself will reconnoiter the way ahead.
00:35:46Reconnoiter?
00:35:47But this is a company hill station, is it not?
00:35:50Aye, ma'am.
00:35:51And as such, I would expect to see some men, at least upon the battlements.
00:35:56Major Trudinic, you have command.
00:35:58Yes, sir.
00:35:59Wyrmwood, bring your section.
00:36:01Skirmish order.
00:36:04Skirmish order, lads.
00:36:09Skirmish order.
00:36:39Secure the foal.
00:36:47You heard the colonel, gentlemen.
00:36:49Look to it.
00:37:01Safe bloody harbour is this.
00:37:05That shit-o-bastard must have some strength
00:37:07to take a fort full garrisoned.
00:37:10An escalade, maybe.
00:37:13On the cover of dark.
00:37:15Could have been over the walls and among them
00:37:17before the alarm were raised.
00:37:19Yes, sir.
00:37:20We got a liven.
00:37:37Christ God Almighty.
00:37:39Simison.
00:37:42You know him, sir.
00:37:45Oh, I croak.
00:37:48I know him.
00:37:49I know him.
00:38:00Deaver.
00:38:01What's that?
00:38:06There's an infirmary under the north rampart.
00:38:09Take the wounded there.
00:38:10Water, sir.
00:38:11Water.
00:38:12Water.
00:38:13Water.
00:38:14I must have water.
00:38:15Give him some.
00:38:15Not too much now.
00:38:16Just enough to wet his lips and also split his guts.
00:38:18Bless you, sir.
00:38:19God bless you, sir.
00:38:20God bless you.
00:38:21God bless you.
00:38:22God bless you.
00:38:23God bless you.
00:38:23God bless you.
00:38:24God bless you.
00:38:25God bless you.
00:38:26God bless you.
00:38:27God bless you.
00:38:28God bless you.
00:38:29God bless you.
00:38:30God bless you.
00:38:31God bless you.
00:38:32God bless you.
00:38:33God bless you.
00:38:34God bless you.
00:38:35God bless you.
00:38:36God bless you.
00:38:38Oh, praise God.
00:38:44Sweet Jesus, for mercy.
00:38:46Mercy.
00:38:48General Simerson, do you not know me?
00:38:52Aye, sir.
00:38:54Thou art my redeemer, sir.
00:38:59It's Sharp, Sir Henry, Richard Sharp.
00:39:02The sweetest name in all the world, sir.
00:39:08Come, please, your cheek against my lips, sir.
00:39:11That I may kiss my blessed saviour, the sun.
00:39:18We must save the harvest.
00:39:23He's raving.
00:39:24It might be a kindness to ease his suffering, sir.
00:39:29I see everyone's in a company almost wiped up by his orders.
00:39:32He's a stupid, malicious bastard.
00:39:34Aye.
00:39:34For he's my stupid, malicious bastard.
00:39:40If anybody's earned the right to do for him, it's me.
00:39:46And I see your lips.
00:39:49Oh, no.
00:39:51No, no, no, no, no.
00:39:52It won't do.
00:39:54Am I to understand that gentlemen and ladies are to bill it together?
00:39:58It is too much.
00:39:59It's a awful shame, Mr. Watkins.
00:40:01Cannot you show some fellow feeling?
00:40:02Miss Bonny has suffered a great shock.
00:40:06What shock?
00:40:08She's come here to meet her fiancé.
00:40:12And as to our quarters, well, surely between us we can improve on our situation.
00:40:17Why, here, even.
00:40:19A broom might almost have been waiting upon us for use.
00:40:21Perhaps, Reverend, you would fetch me some water and see if there's not some scrubbing soap to be had.
00:40:32Call her Wormwood.
00:40:34The garrison must be put in earth.
00:40:37Will you organise a burial party?
00:40:39These hear about lying dead as company troops, Mr. Harper.
00:40:44What of it?
00:40:45They find the heathen is most particular about his funeral observances.
00:40:49Is that a fact?
00:40:52You see, some is for burning.
00:40:56Some for certain adrift along his holy river.
00:40:59Whilst yet more as a fancy to have their insides pecked out by birds.
00:41:04It is a confusion.
00:41:09Yet their wishes must be considered, lest we affront the living.
00:41:15Just see him in the ground, will you, Wormwood?
00:41:17And leave the rest to the Almighty.
00:41:19Hmm?
00:41:24You heard him, lads.
00:41:26Get on with it.
00:41:34It's a soldier I signed off for, not a bloody grave digger.
00:41:38But it's my fancy we'll dig a cha-cha-da fool for that long-legged jackanapes done with us.
00:41:42Just make sure here on our own we're digging, Danny.
00:41:44Oh, I mean's to.
00:41:46I mean's to.
00:41:47The raiders have left us little of use, Colonel.
00:41:59No food.
00:42:01And the well is spoiled with the dead.
00:42:02I had thought along the flotsam to find some hint of the garrison's fate.
00:42:10A bandit attack.
00:42:13I doubt the writer would have had time to make note of such for being himself overcome.
00:42:19Yet someone has been here before me.
00:42:20Unless these bandits are men of learning, I cannot reason their interest in books and parchment bombs.
00:42:30Ant liverties for lists.
00:42:32The army's fond of lists.
00:42:34If you come upon any mention of Miss Bonnie's fiancée, you'll let me know of it.
00:42:41He's not among the dead.
00:42:43The only white man accounted for is Simerson.
00:42:45It's possible this Major Joubert is out upon patrol.
00:42:49I'd be glad to give her some hope.
00:42:51My wife, I know, is offering such comfort and assurance as she can.
00:42:54Aye.
00:42:56You've a good one there, Major.
00:42:58Feel allowed.
00:42:59Indeed, Colonel.
00:42:59I hold myself as the luckiest of men.
00:43:03Yet also I fear a selfish one.
00:43:06There is a score of years and more between us, sir.
00:43:09I wonder sometimes if she would not have been happier with a younger man.
00:43:13The choice was hers to make, Major.
00:43:16To my mind, she chose wisely.
00:43:20Aye, sir. Aye.
00:43:22As you say, fortune favours me beyond my deserving.
00:43:25You'll catch 50 lashes, Coloured Wyrmwood finds you.
00:43:39Now then.
00:43:43Now then.
00:43:44What have you?
00:43:45That's a finer pair.
00:43:47This is all level eight eyes on.
00:43:50Don't tell me there's some BB hit there still.
00:43:53God bless all this, isn't it?
00:44:02It's all to share!
00:44:03Always!
00:44:07We're not here, eh?
00:44:09Let's find ourselves a bit of peace and quiet so we can enjoy it proper.
00:44:17Should you be here, man?
00:44:18I can send someone to relieve you.
00:44:23My time is better occupied.
00:44:26How fair is the general?
00:44:29His thoughts come and go.
00:44:31And the boy?
00:44:32Sleeping.
00:44:34If you embrace Christ with all your heart, even at this late hour, all your sins will be washed as white as snow.
00:44:42Come, sir.
00:44:42I thought we'd cleared this place of vultures.
00:44:46You must leave the sick to their rest, Mr. Watkin.
00:44:49As Madame tends to the physical, Colonel, so I look to tend the immortal soul.
00:44:54As may be, sir.
00:44:56Yet you must come away.
00:44:58Now, sir.
00:44:58The man's dying.
00:45:04Can you not let him go in peace?
00:45:06I am upon God's work, Colonel.
00:45:08God's work.
00:45:09You're a bloody hypocrite.
00:45:10For shame, sir.
00:45:11For shame.
00:45:12At least Simerson's cause for his madness.
00:45:15You.
00:45:15You're the worst kind of lunatic.
00:45:18About your business, sir, and try me no further.
00:45:20Go, sir.
00:45:21Sing.
00:45:22Cry hallelujah and give our men to the top of their lungs, but not here.
00:45:25Go, sir.
00:45:55Cry hallelujah and draw me.
00:46:02Ji-ja-ki-wood.
00:46:03Now, Missy.
00:46:06I'm about to kiss, baby.
00:46:11Aargh!
00:46:12Hold on.
00:46:13That I may have a kiss of her.
00:46:18Aargh!
00:46:20Aargh!
00:46:22Aargh!
00:46:24Aargh!
00:46:24Leave her be.
00:46:32All right.
00:46:36A pretty pickle and no mistake.
00:46:40600 miles between here and home.
00:46:43I don't think we can rely on Dragomirov's troopers to deliver us again.
00:46:47We've done what we said.
00:46:49Brought them safely here.
00:46:52We have.
00:46:53It's our business to the hotel.
00:46:55I won't argue with that.
00:46:59All right.
00:47:01All right.
00:47:03We should just...
00:47:05Just leave them, then, eh?
00:47:09We should.
00:47:12But you won't.
00:47:16Major!
00:47:19Major Jefficks, sir.
00:47:21There's been some trouble, sir.
00:47:22Please, can you come with me?
00:47:23Just when it seems to be going so well.
00:47:27Huh.
00:47:27Keep it all as I foretold, girl.
00:47:31Or the worst of it will come to you.
00:47:33Sammy!
00:47:42The hell's going on here, color?
00:47:43My men, come along your supper there, sir.
00:47:47Looking to take his pleasure of the maid he was, sir, by force.
00:47:51Naturally, being concerned of her honor, they come to her defense.
00:47:54You can ask the girl, sir.
00:47:55You can ask the girl, sir.
00:47:57Sir, I did not.
00:48:05Their word against his, sir.
00:48:07There's the very nub of it.
00:48:09Can't believe her.
00:48:10Fine officers such as yourself would want to take sides with one of them against your own.
00:48:15Then not only are you a liar, oneward, but a bloody fool, also.
00:48:20Liar, sir.
00:48:22That's a very serious charge, sir.
00:48:24Very serious.
00:48:26Not at all the sort of accusation an officer would make against an enlisted man without such proofs as would be necessary to back it up.
00:48:34Proofs?
00:48:35Cases where the honor of an enlisted man have been impugned, sir.
00:48:38K.R.'s very clear about such proofs, sir.
00:48:40A barrack-room lawyer too, eh?
00:48:42King's regulations is like the good book itself to such as I.
00:48:46Then you'll know what the punishment is for running an indisciplined section.
00:48:51Indisciplined?
00:48:53These men are unfit for duty through drink.
00:48:56They is drunk, sir, I grant.
00:48:57Brand duty, sir? No, sir.
00:48:59There we differs.
00:49:00Do we, colour?
00:49:02We does, sir.
00:49:04I was raised up from the ranks, Wormwood.
00:49:05You know what that means?
00:49:09It means you've done a feat, sir, usually.
00:49:12It also means I know every dirty soldier's trick in the book.
00:49:15Is that so, sir?
00:49:17It is so.
00:49:19And I'll tell you something more.
00:49:22Rapes are hanging offence.
00:49:24Even attempted.
00:49:26Rapes are hanging.
00:49:28Drunks are flogging.
00:49:29And you in charge of all.
00:49:32Sir.
00:49:33I could break you for this.
00:49:35Bush you down to private.
00:49:38I've seen some piss poor sections in my time.
00:49:41By God, I have.
00:49:42But yours is a bloody disgrace.
00:49:44Work shy.
00:49:45Gutless.
00:49:46But that's going to change.
00:49:48From now on.
00:49:50They're on picket.
00:49:51Permanent.
00:49:53And every spare second,
00:49:55you're going to be on drill.
00:49:57Pat!
00:49:58Sir.
00:49:58I want them sober and on the firestep within the hour.
00:50:03Right, you sons of whores.
00:50:06You heard the officer.
00:50:07Double, double, double!
00:50:08Ah, I know, Robert.
00:50:19Believe me.
00:50:21Things were all sad anger,
00:50:22but I've done with it.
00:50:24We've 600 miles of hostile country before us.
00:50:29And I need every man I've got.
00:50:30He will not be long now.
00:50:44I'll stay by him.
00:50:46There's no word of Philippe.
00:50:53No, ma'am, not yet.
00:50:56But that he was not found amongst the rest.
00:51:00It's possible Major Joubert survived.
00:51:03Joubert.
00:51:06Joubert!
00:51:07The devil!
00:51:09The very devil!
00:51:10Why still, sir?
00:51:13You're not yourself.
00:51:14Joubert.
00:51:16The harvest.
00:51:17We must save the harvest.
00:51:20Stop him!
00:51:22Stop him!
00:51:25He's not his right mind, Mum.
00:51:27I promise.
00:51:29He'll be calling for my head.
00:51:30Sir.
00:51:33I think he's gone, sir.
00:51:40All right.
00:51:49Are you still out?
00:51:51Sharp means to leave us on to Calcutta.
00:51:54Sure, sir.
00:51:56I don't know if he took his own lips.
00:51:57Then we're dead, man.
00:52:00Someone should do something.
00:52:05What, though, boys?
00:52:08Where's the rub?
00:52:10And who to do it?
00:52:14Any volunteers?
00:52:18A soldier's solution, then.
00:52:21We shall be likened to the Roman.
00:52:24When they parted his raven into four,
00:52:27it would not rend his vesture,
00:52:29but rather cast lots for it.
00:52:35He that plucks the shorter's measure
00:52:37from Diva's shut fist
00:52:39shall stand assassin.
00:52:55That's murder, Kala.
00:52:59It's him or us, Pais.
00:53:02Him or us.
00:53:09Oh, my God.
00:53:10Oh, my God.
00:53:11Oh, my God.
00:53:12Oh, my God.
00:53:13Oh, my God.
00:53:14Oh, my God.
00:53:15Oh, my God.
00:53:16Oh, my God.
00:53:17Oh, my God.
00:53:18Oh, my God.
00:53:19Oh, my God.
00:53:20Oh, my God.
00:53:21Oh, my God.
00:53:22Oh, my God.
00:53:23Oh, my God.
00:53:24Oh, my God.
00:53:25Oh, my God.
00:53:26Oh, my God.
00:53:27Oh, my God.
00:53:28Oh, my God.
00:53:29Oh, my God.
00:53:30Oh, my God.
00:53:31Oh, my God.
00:53:32Oh, my God.
00:53:33Oh, my God.
00:53:34Oh, my God.
00:53:35Oh, my God.
00:53:36Jesus, keep him back, Pat.
00:53:59Tell him to keep back.
00:54:06Tell him to keep back.
00:54:36How many?
00:54:44Too many. 60, 70.
00:54:47Whole families, Richard.
00:54:49Young and old.
00:54:50Men, women.
00:54:52Children for the love of God.
00:54:54This shitter is as wicked a dog as I've ever known.
00:54:57Aye.
00:54:59It's a strange kind of rebel that slaughters his own.
00:55:02You're not thinking.
00:55:04These people were farmers, Pat.
00:55:05No threat to any.
00:55:07Where's the prophet in here?
00:55:09You will set your finger on the knob of the matter, Colonel.
00:55:13There's more to this than a simple rebellion.
00:55:16I'm told you had some time this afternoon in conversation with Major Tredenick, General.
00:55:33Whom?
00:55:34We spoke of the attack upon Kalam Gong, General.
00:55:38You remember?
00:55:38Of course I remember.
00:55:41Damn hard to forget.
00:55:43Perhaps you would be so good as to tell these gentlemen what befell.
00:55:48Company half-squadron arrived to collect the early harvest.
00:55:53And this would have been the 70 chests mentioned in the company writer's report?
00:55:58General.
00:55:59General.
00:56:00General.
00:56:01General.
00:56:01General.
00:56:01General.
00:56:02In wither.
00:56:02I gave the task to my second in command.
00:56:08First mistake.
00:56:11Not me usually laid to call, but a damn Frenchman on temporary attachment.
00:56:20Papers in order, but I thought it'd a rum go over all the same.
00:56:28Cavalry man, do you see?
00:56:31Never trust a damn Frenchman.
00:56:34Go on, sir.
00:56:43The devil had my sepoys and looted his wagons.
00:56:48Now, once the job was done,
00:56:51damp my eyes if my Major didn't mount up with a cavalry and turn him upon us.
00:56:59Entire garrison slaughtered to a man.
00:57:04Only I was spare.
00:57:07Who was he?
00:57:08I've told you.
00:57:09Damn Frenchman.
00:57:11Major Joubert, the third native cavalry.
00:57:14But we agreed, sir, you were confused upon the point.
00:57:17Joubert is fiancée to the young lady who has been tending you in your infirmity.
00:57:22I think I might remember the name of the devil who staked me out under the sundered dizer.
00:57:31Joubert.
00:57:31Major Philippe Joubert.
00:57:35Major Philippe Joubert.
00:57:42Ma'am.
00:57:43Non.
00:57:44Philippe is dead.
00:57:45The general is mistaken.
00:57:46You said yourself.
00:57:47Perhaps.
00:57:49Yet, we did not find him.
00:57:52It's not possible.
00:57:58You think I would marry such a man?
00:58:01What the hell was in those chests that were so important, anyway?
00:58:04Opium, Pat.
00:58:08Grown under license from the company and destined for China.
00:58:10Same as they were raising in this village.
00:58:14Colonel Sharp is right, gentlemen.
00:58:16The company housed these last years, imported from China, ever greater quantities of tea.
00:58:22Tea must be bought with something.
00:58:25How then to balance the books?
00:58:26By selling China, the one thing she craves.
00:58:29You have not one witted proof to support so scandalous an allegation.
00:58:33I expect it does.
00:58:35I had occasioned myself to examine the writer's office.
00:58:39There are some certain ledgers and accounting books missing.
00:58:42Contents of which I intend upon my return to England,
00:58:45and to the everlasting shame of his majesty's government,
00:58:48to make known.
00:58:49It would seem this Joubert, then, sir,
00:58:52has resolved to enter into the trade himself.
00:58:55Not just him, Mr. Buckley.
00:58:57The half-squadron of cavalry that came to Kalimgong
00:59:00was of the third native horse.
00:59:03It's dragging me her off.
00:59:05Stealing the harvest,
00:59:07and blaming it on this rebel Chittum.
00:59:10If such a man even exists.
00:59:19There's something out there, sir.
00:59:27Moving.
00:59:29In those trees and bushes.
00:59:31Skirmish order.
00:59:49Halt!
00:59:57Who goes there?
00:59:59Sharp.
01:00:00Advance to be recognised.
01:00:04What was it?
01:00:05A tiger?
01:00:06What?
01:00:07Yeah, a tiger, right?
01:00:09But only a little.
01:00:14The last sale.
01:00:15Men on horses, sir.
01:00:18Bandits.
01:00:18Or bad men, she says.
01:00:21And one of them,
01:00:22their chief she called him,
01:00:23was right.
01:00:28Why did Dragomir off let us carry on to the hill station?
01:00:32I'm in no notion, then.
01:00:34The fort had already fallen.
01:00:36What did you bear?
01:00:37No reason to care over much.
01:00:39For we should have taken such slaughter
01:00:41to be the work of Cheeto and his bandits.
01:00:43More, sir.
01:00:44We should have returned to the lines bearing tails,
01:00:46which served to further his deception.
01:00:48Well, only Joubert made a mistake.
01:00:51He left alive a witness to his treachery.
01:00:55If in ignorance, then, we presented no threat,
01:00:58we must assume when Dragomir off is reunited with Joubert,
01:01:01the truth will out.
01:01:02Aye.
01:01:04We leave at first light.
01:01:06Sir?
01:01:06They have been and gone.
01:01:21I hope, Major Joubert,
01:01:24that your taste for the dramatic flourish
01:01:27is not about to cost us dear.
01:01:29Lafio?
01:01:31If Similson died
01:01:33before Sharpe's column got here,
01:01:35all is well.
01:01:37If he survived,
01:01:39however,
01:01:40to tell of your perfidy.
01:01:42The bridge is gone.
01:02:11I take the reins
01:02:12and wash it away.
01:02:15Call her Wormwood.
01:02:16Take picket.
01:02:17Sing out if any bugger comes.
01:02:19Pat.
01:02:20Pat.
01:02:21Unhish the wagons.
01:02:22Turn the animals, looks.
01:02:23I understand Mr. Nash
01:02:25is upon fashioning a pavilion
01:02:27very like your own
01:02:28for the Prince Regent, Your Highness,
01:02:30in Brighton.
01:02:32Brighton?
01:02:33A small town by the sea
01:02:35in Sussex.
01:02:36When complete,
01:02:37I fancy it will be the gayest place under heaven.
01:02:41Your Highness,
01:02:42I must ask you to dismount.
01:02:44Dismount?
01:02:45Why?
01:02:45We bear enough provision
01:02:47for ourselves, ma'am.
01:02:48The animals must be turned loose here
01:02:50and left to themselves.
01:02:52I will not abandon my tip, Akun.
01:02:54We've no choice, ma'am.
01:02:56From here we go on foot.
01:02:57Only those things essential
01:02:59to our journey may be carried.
01:03:00Food, water, ammunition.
01:03:05Keep that rope nice and tight now, Sing.
01:03:08Nice and tight.
01:03:09Only those things essential
01:03:22to our journey, Mr. Watkin.
01:03:23I gave order.
01:03:24Maybe you did not hear.
01:03:25But these things are essential, Colonel Sharp.
01:03:29Indeed.
01:03:30This is essential.
01:03:32And that.
01:03:32And these.
01:03:34They are liturgical accoutrements, sir.
01:03:36Necessary to furnish my new mission
01:03:38at Benutullah.
01:03:38Ah, once we've reached safe ground,
01:03:41you can make arrangements
01:03:42to have your equipment retrieved.
01:03:44But, Colonel...
01:03:54Mahariri, sir.
01:03:56Excuse me.
01:03:57What's going on?
01:03:58I didn't want to bring your shisha.
01:04:00Shisha?
01:04:01No matter what.
01:04:02I'll take it.
01:04:03Dharah!
01:04:04No need.
01:04:06Where's she going?
01:04:07Oh, it's...
01:04:08It's my looking glass.
01:04:11With Colonel Sharp's haste
01:04:12to have us abandon
01:04:12all our belongings,
01:04:13she...
01:04:14She forgot it.
01:04:15We've no time for this, ma'am.
01:04:17I know.
01:04:18I told her so.
01:04:19Mr. Harper, I told her,
01:04:20but...
01:04:21she insists.
01:04:22I looked for you
01:04:35at Kalimgong, Colonel.
01:04:37But I only found
01:04:38fresh graves
01:04:39and a garrison missing.
01:04:40The fort was attacked.
01:04:42And a company entire
01:04:43put to the sword.
01:04:44Did none survive?
01:04:46None.
01:04:46Philippe?
01:04:48Philippe?
01:04:50No.
01:04:59But I think one, perhaps.
01:05:01And by your lie,
01:05:02I must assume
01:05:03he has told you
01:05:04of his misfortune.
01:05:06Leaving the commanding officer alive
01:05:08was an unnecessary cruelty
01:05:10on my associate's behalf.
01:05:12Mais je suis bête.
01:05:13I cannot allow
01:05:14your companions
01:05:15to reach the lines
01:05:17in receipt
01:05:18of such intelligence
01:05:19against me.
01:05:20Are you going to kill him?
01:05:21In any enterprise,
01:05:22there is always
01:05:23spoilage.
01:05:24But as gentlemen,
01:05:26cannot we come
01:05:26to some reasonable agreement?
01:05:28You and I?
01:05:30There is no need
01:05:31for you to suffer
01:05:32long off the rest.
01:05:34Nor indeed,
01:05:34a good mages
01:05:35affianced bride.
01:05:37Come, my dear.
01:05:38Go to hell!
01:05:39If it's a matter
01:05:40of scruple,
01:05:41I have always found
01:05:42gold,
01:05:42the sovereign thing
01:05:43on earth
01:05:44for troubled conscience.
01:05:45There's not enough gold
01:05:46in the world
01:05:46to buy your life back.
01:05:48My life?
01:05:50Well,
01:05:51we shall have our time.
01:05:52Perhaps sooner
01:05:53than you think.
01:05:57Quick.
01:05:58Quick.
01:05:59Get him across.
01:06:05Come on, lass.
01:06:07Teach me, girl.
01:06:12Major!
01:06:31Major!
01:06:31Get up, sir.
01:06:32Come on, get up!
01:06:34Major, stop it!
01:06:36Major, stop it!
01:06:36Major, come on!
01:06:37Come on!
01:06:38Major, stop it!
01:06:39Let's go!
01:06:39Kill me, girl.
01:06:41I want them alive!
01:06:42I want them alive!
01:06:44Won't hurt.
01:06:46Come on!
01:06:46porter!
01:06:46Come on!
01:06:47Come on!
01:06:47Wayne!
01:06:48Get up!
01:06:53Buster!
01:06:53Come on, Rachel.
01:06:54Well, here come.
01:06:55Come on.
01:06:56You're better.
01:06:56Come on.
01:06:57Just stick with me.
01:06:57Come on.
01:06:58Let's go.
01:06:58Let's go.
01:06:59Go.
01:06:59Go!
01:07:04Whoa!
01:07:04Richard!
01:07:25Where the hell are you going?
01:07:27You can't leave it to a path.
01:07:29You go across that river, you're a dead man.
01:07:31What good are you two or them?
01:07:34Dammit to hell!
01:07:42Stand by, you bastard!
01:07:50You gonna stop?
01:07:55Go on, listen.
01:07:56You can tell me we're gone from this place.
01:08:00Fire!
01:08:01I wish you an uncomfortable night.
01:08:03I wish you an uncomfortable night.
01:08:07I wish you one of the best!
01:08:08I wish you an unpleasant day!
01:08:09I wish you an uncomfortable night.
01:08:10Go on, do it!
01:08:11Be quiet!
01:08:13Where is the worst?
01:08:17I wish you an unpleasant day!
01:08:19I wish you an unpleasant day!
01:08:23If you would be all alone!
01:08:25I wish I had a good night!
