00:00:00Major League Baseball trade deadline action yesterday.

00:00:03Not a lot of action on the field for game numbers volume, right?

00:00:06Three total games yesterday, but you did have a lot of action in that Reds

00:00:08and Atlanta Braves game that we did talk about.

00:00:10But heading into the night, how about this one?

00:00:13Carlos Correa reuniting with the Houston Astros after leading the Minnesota.

00:00:17Minnesota going to pick up a lot of that salary.

00:00:19And looking at Correa going back to the Astros, pretty good career here, right?

00:00:22You take a look at a three-time All-Star 2017 World Series champion

00:00:25with Houston from 2015 to 2021.

00:00:28He returns back.

00:00:29They need some extra pop in the lineup, and maybe he can stay healthy

00:00:32and give them that extra pop here.

00:00:34In 2025, you see the statistics, seven home runs and 31 RBIs.

00:00:37Got to be happy to leave the Twin Cities, which is a straight-up sale right now.

00:00:41You want a fire sale?

00:00:42It happened in Minnesota.

00:00:44The Houston Astros, known for making deep runs in the playoffs,

00:00:46they fortified that lineup with Carlos Correa yesterday.

00:00:50Yeah, well, you know, I think it also signals that with Houston,

00:00:53just making the playoffs is not a big win here.

00:00:58They are making moves in order to be able to get a good run at this.

00:01:03And, yeah, what they needed and what they know, by the way,

00:01:06they know they lost Paredes, right?

00:01:08So they knew they needed to address this.

00:01:11And Carlos Correa is still living in the offseason in Houston,

00:01:15very familiar with this team, the area.

00:01:17He's got a lot of friends and family there.

00:01:19It's a win-win situation for both because you mentioned Correa is leaving a

00:01:25Minnesota organization who was so over the top in salaries and now really doesn't

00:01:31have any salaries anymore.

00:01:32They binge and purge there.

00:01:34But don't forget, Houston's got all these starting pitchers and relievers coming

00:01:39back here over the next couple of weeks.

00:01:41So they are in prime position to be able to make another run at it,

00:01:45if you can believe it.

00:01:46You're also adding Jesus Sanchez yesterday from the Miami Marlins to sort of, again,

00:01:51you know, put a little bit more pop in that lineup.

00:01:53We always know if that starting pitching is healthy there,

00:01:56that bullpen should be able to come around.

00:01:57Jose Altuve, always a mainstay, gets his boy back in Carlos Correa,

00:02:00and we'll see if they can make a run.

00:02:02Other acquisitions yesterday, because the deadline was fantastic all day long,

00:02:06the question marks were, are the rich going to get richer?

00:02:08And typically that's what happens here.

00:02:10We've known the Padres to make moves in the past,

00:02:12but the Padres yesterday were absolutely on fire.

00:02:14Mason Miller, J.P. Sears, Nestor Cortez, Ryan O'Hearn, Ramon Laureano,

00:02:18Freddie Firmino.

00:02:19It almost looks like they flipped over half of their roster,

00:02:22which now I look at it and say, boy, I like the starting pitching.

00:02:25I absolutely love that bullpen.

00:02:27And if that one through nine can just stay healthy and hit the way we know they

00:02:30can hit, Joe, that team can certainly do some damage.

00:02:34Yeah, and you got to love it.

00:02:35Because, again, Mason Miller is under contract for a couple of more years here.

00:02:40Suarez, their current closer is not.

00:02:42He's going to be a free agent at the end.

00:02:44But you add some pop there, like you said, and Ryan O'Hearn,

00:02:48Laureano has been absolutely crushing it.

00:02:50You get some catching depth, too, now.

00:02:53And, oh, by the way, you kept Dylan Cease,

00:02:56even though we kept managing to hear that that was going to be a trade piece.

00:03:00You know, you can get Nestor Cortez from Milwaukee to eat up some innings.

00:03:05Once again, the Padres did exactly what they needed to do

00:03:08in order to chase down the Dodgers, which is the ultimate goal for them.

00:03:13I'll tell you what's also incredible, too, is we, you know,

00:03:16you try to line things up, and it's like the playoffs.

00:03:19Usually in the past, it was always about, Joe, you're starting pitching.

00:03:22And for some degree, it is.

00:03:24If you have frontline starters, they can go six to seven innings in the playoffs.

00:03:26But how many times have we seen, like, quality pitchers leave the game

00:03:29after two on and one out in a one-to-one game in the third inning,

00:03:33where you just have to piecemeal that bullpen for five to six innings,

00:03:36and you're able to do it?

00:03:37And even in fashion now is once you get to the World Series and later,

00:03:40like the NLDS, the ALDS, the ALCS, the NLCS,

00:03:44you even see bullpen days in the actual rotation

00:03:47as opposed to a starter in the biggest games here.

00:03:49You fortify that bullpen.

00:03:51You can mix and match and go up against any batters that you like.

00:03:53I really like what the San Diego Padres have done.

00:03:56And also, the New York Yankees.

00:03:58Sure, you're always looking for an extra bat in the lineup

00:03:59or starting pitcher, but the Yankees yesterday,

00:04:01Bednar, Doval, Bird coming into that bullpen here.

00:04:05If Williams can get it together, you can go toe-to-toe with anybody again.

00:04:09I love bullpen arms and Bednar, the best one there for the Yankees.

00:04:13Well, I mean, it's good.

00:04:16You got Jay Bird, you got Bednar.

00:04:18The last one was the Camillo Doval there at the end from the Giants.

00:04:22All of these guys at any point, they miss bats a lot.

00:04:27All of those guys do, and that's something the Yankees certainly need.

00:04:30And this is coming off the heels of adding some depth with the bats.

00:04:35And of course, I think Ryan McMahon, huge addition, not only offensively,

00:04:40but defensively at third base, a position that's really bothered the Yankees

00:04:44over the years.

00:04:46Now, all of a sudden, you better score early on the Yankees

00:04:49because you may not be scoring late.

00:04:51No doubt about it.

00:04:52Other notable Major League Baseball trades yesterday.

00:04:55The Rangers picking up Merrill Kelly as a starting pitcher.

00:04:57The Red Sox getting Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

00:05:00The Tigers getting Mr. Reliable Charlie Morton.

00:05:03The Rays getting Griffin Jackson here.

00:05:05Again, that sell-all feels like it certainly continues there up in Minnesota.

00:05:09The Mets getting Cedric Mullins in the outfield, and also Willie Castro, the Cubs.

00:05:13So you look at some of those moves, they don't seem like they're tip of the iceberg.

00:05:16Now we're going to go for it.

00:05:17But quality players, and that can certainly, Joe, help you down the stretch.

00:05:21Yeah, I mean, and listen, the Mets needed started pitching.

00:05:24But like we had said, there isn't an awful lot of starting pitching out there.

00:05:29So they also needed, you know, an improvement in center field.

00:05:33They got that in Mullins, picking up Helsley and Soto and Tyler Rogers in the back end.

00:05:39All good stuff here for both New York teams.

00:05:42Yeah, and also other trades there.

00:05:44And again, there were a lot of them, a flurry of trades.

00:05:46Obviously, the big names that we know about that went through,

00:05:49the Tigers getting Finnegan and also Paul Seewald.

00:05:51You take a look at the Phillies with Harrison Bader in the outfield.

00:05:53Tried to swing a couple moves for some different outfielders.

00:05:56They settled in here.

00:05:57And again, the selling point of the Minnesota Twins.

00:06:00Brewers picked up guys.

00:06:01Rangers still made time.

00:06:02The Rays get Adrian Hauser, which is interesting.

00:06:04He was pitching really good so far in the season.

00:06:06The Royals get Mike Yastrzemski here.

00:06:09Jesus Sanchez, as we talked about, the Astros picking him up from the Marlins.

00:06:12So a lot of teams chaining a lot of players yesterday.

00:06:15Some trying to get under some mysterious salary cap like Minnesota.

00:06:19And other teams saying, we're going to press this in

00:06:20and try to make a wild card race here, Joe.

00:06:22Yeah, and that's exactly what this trade deadline has become there.

00:06:27Not a lot of teams tipping their hands.

00:06:29A lot of teams waiting until last minute.

00:06:32But a lot of good.

00:06:34There's also some big names that we heard about for weeks leading in that.

00:06:37Well, they didn't go anywhere, including Dylan Cease and a pitcher in Miami

00:06:41that we might see this weekend.

00:06:44Yeah, exactly.

00:06:45Alcantara still sitting there, but also the Padres were making all these moves.

00:06:48Okay, that's fine.

00:06:49They're going to trade Suarez here out of the bullpen.

00:06:51They kept him as well.

00:06:52Dylan Cease was that hot name that you talked about yesterday.

00:06:54He didn't move here, which is good for the Padres.

00:06:56They are basically all in trying to track down the Los Angeles Dodgers.

00:07:00Now, the fun part about this is going to be is, sure,

00:07:02how do these teams play in the short term in the first couple weeks of August,

00:07:05these fun new lineups that we get to take a look at?

00:07:07But let's reset the marketplace and which numbers changed at the sportsbooks here to say,

00:07:11all right, are they really a Major League Baseball contender for a World Series?

00:07:15We'll hit those topics next right here on the early line on a Friday morning.

00:07:19Mark the movement, people, on the early line on a Friday morning

00:07:22because we always take a look at the season, right?

00:07:24Ooh, we have a lot of fun from, you know, February and March

00:07:27and lining up the World Series odds.

00:07:28And once teams take the field in April and early May,

00:07:31and then the all-star break.

00:07:32But the big one here is the trade deadline because teams do improve themselves.

00:07:36I always used to talk about the Los Angeles Dodgers, Joe, saying,

00:07:39you know, the team that they're going to have now,

00:07:40not the team they're going to have at the deadline, similar to many teams.

00:07:43Same thing with the Padres.

00:07:44I think the Padres are a better team today.

00:07:45I think the Yankees are a better team today.

00:07:47I think the Philadelphia Phillies are a better team today.

00:07:49Same thing with the New York Mets.

00:07:50So the haves and the have-nots, as we like to talk about.

00:07:52But if you look at some of the odds, particularly with the Dodgers, how about this, though?

00:07:57The Dodgers were a plus-220 price on Monday to win the World Series.

00:08:01The Dodgers today, Joe, they're a plus-240 price, and I want to start there.

00:08:05Because so many times, including myself,

00:08:07we always figure that the Dodgers at the trade deadline will win the day.

00:08:11More money to spend than anybody else, more prospects than anybody,

00:08:14and they feel they have a need to fill.

00:08:15They're going to go out and get the best prospect.

00:08:17Now, granted, if it maybe was the bullpen,

00:08:19they didn't really want to fortify because they have a pretty good one, understandable.

00:08:22There weren't unbelievable bats out there in the marketplace outside of Eugenio Suarez,

00:08:26and maybe they didn't want to just dip into that prospect pool to get that player.

00:08:29But it's interesting to me where, like, the first time you see it,

00:08:32that's, like, a losing streak.

00:08:33Like, the Dodgers lost a price point.

00:08:35Why?

00:08:36Because the team in their division got really good, and that was the Padres, Joe.

00:08:40Yeah, well, exactly.

00:08:42And the Padres, and again, A.J. Pell, are one of the most aggressive general managers

00:08:47in all of Major League Baseball.

00:08:49And you've got to love that.

00:08:50If you're a Padres fan, then you know there's no question in your mind with this GM

00:08:56that if he thinks he's got a shot, he's going to be pushing chips all in.

00:09:01He's going to do whatever he's got to do to make this team better.

00:09:04It has been more exciting with Padres baseball over the last three and four years,

00:09:09Donnie, than it has been in a very, very long time.

00:09:13But ultimately, it's going to come down to it because the Dodgers didn't do a whole lot.

00:09:17I mean, they kind of, you know, they had a little bit of depth.

00:09:21They got rid of Dusty May.

00:09:22They, you know, okay, great.

00:09:26Is it enough?

00:09:27Is ultimately going to be the question.

00:09:29Is it enough for the Padres who ultimately in the postseason,

00:09:33even with all those high-priced names and players over the last couple of years,

00:09:38still couldn't catch the Dodgers?

00:09:39Will it be enough this year, especially with Otani coming back into the rotation?

00:09:44It's going to be interesting.

00:09:46I'll tell you what, too, because you take a look at Glass now,

00:09:48who looks like he's back.

00:09:49You're going to get Blake Snell back.

00:09:50If Otani stretched out into a starter, like things are really looking good for the Dodgers.

00:09:55So you don't really have to add on too much because whose roster spot would they be taking?

00:09:58That's why they get rid of May yesterday.

00:10:00It's like, hey, we got some pitchers coming back into the lineup.

00:10:02We can't all just have seven or eight-man rotation.

00:10:04Some people have to be on the move.

00:10:06But as we take a look at that move on the Dodgers, Joe,

00:10:08at a plus-220 price to plus-240 as of this week,

00:10:11the exact opposite, taking a look at the bottom of this graphic here, it's the Padres.

00:10:15A 32-1 price now sits at 19-1.

00:10:18Yesterday, when those flurry of trades were going down, you see the 27s, the 1,

00:10:21the 25s, the 1, the 22s, the 1, all disappearing yesterday.

00:10:25I really like what the Padres did.

00:10:27Does it translate onto the field?

00:10:28Does that mean automatic victories here?

00:10:30We're not so sure of that because we don't have a crystal ball.

00:10:32But I agree.

00:10:33If you're looking for the biggest price drop yesterday, and rightfully so,

00:10:36it was the Padres.

00:10:37They fortified that team yesterday, and it looks like they're saying,

00:10:41we're coming for you, Los Angeles.

00:10:43I'd love to know what Met fans think about how somehow their odds got worse,

00:10:49and yet they have – I thought they did a great job yesterday.

00:10:53I mean, especially leading up here.

00:10:56I thought they addressed exactly what they needed to address here.

00:10:59I think Cedric Mullins was a great pickup.

00:11:01Helsley, Soto, Rodgers, you know, fortifying that bullpen.

00:11:05You're starting pitching as you're starting pitching here,

00:11:08but you still got to be able to hit.

00:11:09You still got to play some defense.

00:11:10I think the bullpen's an improvement, and yet the Mets somehow lost ground

00:11:15is interesting to me.

00:11:18But, again, you still got to play the games, Don.

00:11:19It doesn't matter what teams look like on paper, does it?

00:11:23No, it doesn't.

00:11:24And you take a look at some of those moves here because they do go

00:11:26in different directions.

00:11:27You know, Tampa Bay was a 55-1, and now they're 110-1

00:11:31because they don't care about winning.

00:11:33It looks like they're just selling, and where are we going to move to

00:11:35and how we sell this baseball team.

00:11:36San Francisco is like, hey, we'll get Rafael Devers a couple weeks ago.

00:11:39Let's see if we can make something happen.

00:11:41They made absolutely nothing happen.

00:11:43They go from 75-1 to 150-1.

00:11:46Why?

00:11:47Because we know the Dodgers are good, and the Padres are like,

00:11:50good luck trying to keep up with us now as we just got a brand-new roster here

00:11:54of feels-like all-star talent.

00:11:56Yeah, you know, Tampa was interesting, right?

00:12:00I mean, Caballero ends up saying we had it yesterday, right?

00:12:02Had to switch dugouts there.

00:12:04Got pulled from the game.

00:12:05It's like, hey, dude, you're in the other locker room now.

00:12:08You're a New York Yankee.

00:12:09Sorry about that.

00:12:11But, you know, they got rid of Taj Bradley, and then –

00:12:13but they picked up Adrian Hauser.

00:12:15Like, what is Tampa doing?

00:12:16You've got Griffin Jacks.

00:12:18I don't know.

00:12:18Maybe one of the best closers that nobody talks about.

00:12:22So what are you, Tampa?

00:12:24I'm still confused as to what they're doing here, Donnie.

00:12:27Ah, getting a closer for a team that doesn't really need to close out games

00:12:31or make a playoff run.

00:12:32Always a smart investment there in Tampa.

00:12:34But we'll take a quick look at the World Series odds,

00:12:36then take a look at some of the division leaders next,

00:12:38right here on the early line.

00:12:39Let's get some visuals, Joe Ranieri, here on the World Series odds

00:12:42to see how they play out.

00:12:43We'll get to the divisions here and the teams that are the haves

00:12:45and the have-nots.

00:12:46How do they apply that pressure in the month of August and September

00:12:49on their way to a playoff run?

00:12:51If we look at the Dodgers, we just talked about them at a plus 240 price,

00:12:54but now in second in the odds market here,

00:12:56tied up here with the New York Yankees, it's the Philadelphia Phillies.

00:13:00So you go Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, and Mets.

00:13:03Ten to one or less.

00:13:05Any interesting looks at these price points?

00:13:07Because if you felt your team was going to make a move yesterday,

00:13:10your odds probably got better here, and away we go.

00:13:14Listen, I'm just going to say it here,

00:13:17because we've talked about it in the past.

00:13:21Of all those teams, there's one team on that list, I mean,

00:13:25that has already proven they can steamroll the Dodgers when necessary.

00:13:29And that was the Brewers.

00:13:32And, you know, listen, it's not like they got worse by any stretch,

00:13:36because the Cubs, what did they do?

00:13:38You know, the Cubs needed a few things as well,

00:13:42and it wasn't exactly a huge banner trade deadline for the Cubs,

00:13:46where they got so much better.

00:13:49I still think the Brewers are some value here,

00:13:51and maybe even more so now,

00:13:53because they both, the bullpen Shelby Miller they got,

00:13:57they got Danny Jansen from the Rays,

00:14:00so they got some backup and depth with the catching spot.

00:14:03I mean, the Brewers, it's 17 to one.

00:14:06They're the only team, by the way,

00:14:07that has proven they can beat the Dodgers in any series.

00:14:12Yeah, bring on the Dodgers, man.

00:14:13Beat them at home, beat them on the road,

00:14:15handle them in the playoffs, yeoman's work efforts here,

00:14:17because if we focus on the National League

00:14:19and take a look at the leaders right now in the clubhouse,

00:14:22it's the New York Mets by a half game over the Philadelphia Phillies,

00:14:24the Marlins nine back, the Braves 15 and a half games back.

00:14:27Those teams aren't going to factor in down the stretch.

00:14:29Then you have the NL Central, which is the Milwaukee Brewers,

00:14:32a one-game lead over the Chicago Cubs.

00:14:34And don't look now.

00:14:35Let's put this focus once again on the NL West,

00:14:38because we see those numbers for the Padres getting shorter here.

00:14:40The Dodgers numbers increasing just a bit.

00:14:43Why?

00:14:43The Dodgers are 63-46, Joe, in the season.

00:14:46Only a three-game lead over the Padres,

00:14:48who have themselves at 60 wins.

00:14:50They've also won five games in a row,

00:14:53starting to put the pressure on the Dodgers.

00:14:55All those flurry of moves and activities here

00:14:57at the trade deadline, really paying dividends.

00:15:00We'll see if they win again tonight as a favorite.

00:15:02But do you think that there's a chance now,

00:15:04because throughout the summer, throughout the spring,

00:15:06it's always going to be the Dodgers.

00:15:08They're still going to win.

00:15:09I still think it's going to be the Dodgers.

00:15:11But now I see all those moves that the Padres made

00:15:13and go toe-for-toe-like.

00:15:14Boy, I like everything about the Padres.

00:15:16Why can't they close that gap of three games, Joe,

00:15:19over the final two months of the season?

00:15:21Yeah, they very well can.

00:15:24But they haven't.

00:15:26And history tells us that they end up falling short

00:15:29no matter how much money they spend

00:15:31or what they end up doing.

00:15:33So, is it the right combination?

00:15:35And, Donnie, that's it.

00:15:37Is it having such a loaded back end of the bullpen?

00:15:41Is that the way to beat the Dodgers,

00:15:43who are going to come into any series against the Padres, Donnie?

00:15:46And who's got the advantage starting pitching-wise?

00:15:49What good does your bullpen matter

00:15:51if you're always trailing and you're never leading?

00:15:56And the starting pitching advantage for the Dodgers,

00:15:58by the time we get to the end of August and September,

00:16:01is going to be significant over what they've got.

00:16:05I will say this.

00:16:06Michael King is on his way back, by the way,

00:16:09for the Padres starting rotation.

00:16:11Big news.

00:16:12Big news there in keeping Dylan Cease.

00:16:14You get him back into form.

00:16:15That's a pretty good team here as we lay it out.

00:16:17But if we do look at each one of those divisions,

00:16:19the NL East, the NL Central, and the NL West, Joe,

00:16:22it looks like it's two-man races all the way through.

00:16:24As we said, Mets, Phillies, Brewers, Cubs,

00:16:26and now the Dodgers and the Padres.

00:16:27The Giants, nine games back, well, six games in a row.

00:16:30We just talked about their odds absolutely plummeting down.

00:16:32But if I ask you today and you say,

00:16:35all right, comfortability here.

00:16:36Is it the Dodgers to win the division?

00:16:38Is it the Brewers to win the division?

00:16:40Is it the Mets or those second-place teams, Joe,

00:16:42that we talk about, the Phillies, Cubs, and the Padres?

00:16:44Who are you most confident right now today, August 1st,

00:16:48that you can say will win their division in the National League?

00:16:52Yeah, well, I don't know what else the Mets could have done

00:16:55to improve what their situation was,

00:16:59because there really wasn't a frontline starter

00:17:01that was going to be a game-changer for them available,

00:17:04but they addressed everything else.

00:17:06But listen, the Phillies needed one thing.

00:17:07They needed a closer.

00:17:09And what did they do?

00:17:10They went out and got one of the best relievers in baseball

00:17:12over the last, what, three years?

00:17:15So, and he's under control, by the way, through, I think, 2027.

00:17:19So, and that, to me, was a deal all about Philadelphia competing

00:17:24in September and October.

00:17:26You've got a ton of veterans.

00:17:29You've got a ton of big bats there, guys that have been there

00:17:31and done this.

00:17:33The Phillies, to me, should be the favorite

00:17:35to win the National League East, I think,

00:17:37and be very dangerous come playoff time

00:17:39because of that experience.

00:17:41We'll see if that team can stay healthy.

00:17:44The Phillies are notorious for playing decent baseball

00:17:46in the summer and then ramping up in September.

00:17:48You don't want to go backwards like they did last year,

00:17:50getting a little bit ice cold before they hit the playoffs.

00:17:53If we do look at the National League pennant odds,

00:17:55it is the Dodgers, still is the favorite,

00:17:56at a plus-130 price, followed by the Philadelphia Phillies

00:17:59at plus-480, then the Mets at a plus-490.

00:18:01Chicago Cubs, Brewers, and the Padres now

00:18:04cut their number down to 10-1.

00:18:06The Dodgers gearing up.

00:18:08If they just stay healthy and get their players back

00:18:11from the IL to perform the way we think they are,

00:18:13they're always going to be the favorite here.

00:18:15The Phillies have unbelievable starting pitching,

00:18:17now fortifying that bullpen here.

00:18:18Robertson's coming into that rotation here

00:18:20in the month of August.

00:18:21I believe he's set to return, I believe,

00:18:23after his minor league stint, August the 5th.

00:18:25Alvarado, mid-month here.

00:18:26Now, Alvarado can't pitch in the playoffs,

00:18:27but he's certainly going to help down the stretch.

00:18:29And then you've got Duran here from the Minnesota Twins.

00:18:32It's a decent bullpen now, which was one of those parts

00:18:34who's like, ooh, they might struggle down the stretch

00:18:36turning that into a positive.

00:18:38The Mets are always going to be out there.

00:18:40They're talented 1-9.

00:18:41Chicago Cubs, still waiting on those starting pitchers for me,

00:18:44but the Brewers, it feels like to me now,

00:18:46like the Brewers and the Padres,

00:18:47those wild cards at 850 or higher,

00:18:50you say, ah, I'm just going to go with the top teams.

00:18:51No, there's legit talent there on the Brewers and the Padres

00:18:54that can do some damage if they see the playoffs.

00:18:56Yeah, the problem with the Cubs is that it just feels like,

00:19:02did you, it seems like everybody ahead of you

00:19:05got a little bit better and it kind of felt like

00:19:08you were kicking the can down the road

00:19:11and you were happy with like Michael Soroka

00:19:13and Jitridge or, like, I mean, you know,

00:19:17Will Castro's a nice pickup,

00:19:19but none of this is moving the needle

00:19:21compared to what everybody else already has

00:19:24or went out and got here at the trade deadline.

00:19:26So I think the Cubs kind of, you snooze, you lose,

00:19:30and I'm not happy with what the Cubs did here at all.

00:19:34Yeah, it's kind of interesting as it plays out

00:19:36because that's a talented team,

00:19:59A lot of these teams that we're going over today

00:20:01are the haves,

00:20:02and certainly the expectations have been ramped up.

00:20:05When you enter into that locker room,

00:20:06Joe Ranieri, today on a Friday,

00:20:08when your team made trades to bolster that bullpen,

00:20:11fortify the starting pitching staff,

00:20:13add a couple bats, the expectations are raised,

00:20:16and the Dodgers understand this as well.

00:20:18The Padres raise the stakes.

00:20:19They're gunning for the Dodgers.

00:20:21The Dodgers better be on their A game.

00:20:22The Phillies and the Mets,

00:20:23they are going to teeter-totter the rest of the way.

00:20:26August and September,

00:20:27first place, second place, first place, second place.

00:20:29And the same thing with the Cubs and the Brewers.

00:20:31Those two teams going toe-to-toe in head-to-head matchups

00:20:34should be a lot of fun to play.

00:20:35But now that we see these teams looking

00:20:37and motivated to win a World Series,

00:20:39let's see how they play out

00:20:40over the next couple weeks here.

00:20:42Again, this is where experience comes into play, right, Donnie?

00:20:46So it's the Dodgers.

00:20:48They're the champions.

00:20:49They have been,

00:20:50they know every time they walk into a different city

00:21:03The question is, is anybody going to do it?

00:21:11But also, those teams sort of left out, right?

00:21:14You look at teams like the Cincinnati Reds

00:21:15and the Giants who got their, you know,

00:21:18act cut in half, what you will.

00:21:19Is there anybody that we feel could make a charge

00:21:22into those standings here in the NL pennant race

00:21:25that you go, you know what?

00:21:26Maybe the Reds do get lightning in a bottle

00:21:29and charge up the standings.

00:21:30Or does it look like we're just set here?

00:21:31We got our top six and we're ready to go.

00:21:34Yeah, I think it's very top-heavy.

00:21:36And I think that's a byproduct of baseball pushing for parity.

00:21:40Well, you got a lot of power.

00:21:42You got a lot of very mediocre baseball teams,

00:21:45including the Reds.

00:21:46And then you have the Habs that are still

00:21:48that top third of the board there, Donnie.

00:21:51And the winner is coming from that group.

00:21:54Circle the wagons, people.

00:21:56Down the stretch they come.

00:22:00Let's focus on the American League

00:22:01because a little bit different in the standings

00:22:03that we see some really close races in the National League.

00:22:06If we look at the division leaders, Joe,

00:22:08as it currently stands in the American League,

00:22:10the Toronto Blue Jays,

00:22:11three and a half games clear of the New York Yankees,

00:22:13the Detroit Tigers,

00:22:14nine games clear of the Cleveland Guardians,

00:22:17and then in the AL West,

00:22:18which is going to be some entertaining finish here,

00:22:20the Houston Astros,

00:22:21four and a half games clear of the Seattle Mariners,

00:22:23and five and a half games clear of the Texas Rangers.

00:22:25The Mariners and the Rangers are playing right now.

00:22:28So we see with those division leaders,

00:22:30how confident are we, Joe,

00:22:32that the Blue Jays,

00:22:33the Tigers,

00:22:34and the Astros

00:22:35will carry the day and win their divisions?

00:22:36I think there's battles everywhere.

00:22:41I mean, the only team that is in the position A,

00:22:45Donnie,

00:22:46to actually win their division is Detroit

00:22:48without a whole lot of fanfare there,

00:22:51just because who's catching them in the Central?

00:22:54But Toronto is far from a given

00:22:57that they're going to take down the American League East.

00:22:59You've got, obviously,

00:23:01what's going on in the West

00:23:03with the Astros and the Mariners

00:23:05and now the Rangers.

00:23:07That's going to be a battle to the finish.

00:23:09So outside of Detroit,

00:23:11I don't,

00:23:14this whole board could look a lot differently,

00:23:17in about two and a half weeks,

00:23:18three weeks,

00:23:19and all those odds could be different.

00:23:21So I wouldn't be jumping in on Toronto now

00:23:25they're the ones winning the American League East

00:23:27when it's all said and done.

00:23:30And if we're taking a look at,

00:23:31Detroit's not vulnerable.

00:23:32Like,

00:23:32the Guardians,

00:23:33the Royals,

00:23:33the Twins,

00:23:34the White Sox,

00:23:34they're not catching them.

00:23:35I don't think they blow a nine-game lead

00:23:37with two months to go.

00:23:38But if we do look at the Toronto Blue Jays

00:23:40as compared to the Yankees

00:23:41and the Houston Astros to the Mariners,

00:23:43it does feel like the Toronto Blue Jays

00:23:45are the team that is a little bit more vulnerable.

00:23:47But if we do put our focus on the AL West,

00:23:50this is going to be an unbelievable finish.

00:23:52The Rangers are healthy now.

00:23:54Pitching staff intact.

00:23:56Lineup looks as good as it did day number one.

00:23:58They just have to produce now.

00:23:59You take a look at the Seattle Mariners

00:24:01at the trade deadline.

00:24:02Eugenio Suarez,

00:24:03Josh Naylor.

00:24:04They've already have a very good pitching staff here.

00:24:06And also Cal Raleigh,

00:24:07leading Major League Baseball in home runs.

00:24:10The Houston Astros,

00:24:11who do get Correa there,

00:24:12waiting for Alvarez to come back into the lineup.

00:24:14They do have talent.

00:24:15But I just look at this and say,

00:24:17you know what?

00:24:17Like, even the Rangers,

00:24:19seven and three in their last 10 games,

00:24:20even though they lost their last game last night

00:24:22to the Mariners, six to nothing.

00:24:23It feels like one of those three teams,

00:24:25and I want to say like any team can win it,

00:24:27but Donnie, five and a half games back,

00:24:28four and a half games back,

00:24:29the Astros should win it.

00:24:30I get that.

00:24:30And yes, they have a four and a half game lead,

00:24:32but I won't be surprised

00:24:33if you tell me any one of those three teams

00:24:36wins the division.

00:24:37They're not talented.

00:24:38If I had to put my money today

00:24:40and say, you know what?

00:24:41Remove the Astros.

00:24:42It probably is going to be the Mariners

00:24:43because I'm so excited the way that lineup moves now

00:24:45and the lineup looks

00:24:46and also the good vibes around them.

00:24:48Like, I really think the Mariners

00:24:49can do some damage over August and September

00:24:51and get in there.

00:24:52Yeah, listen, all those teams

00:24:56that you just mentioned,

00:24:57especially in the West here,

00:24:59Seattle and Texas,

00:25:01these are teams that got better today.

00:25:04They are better today on paper

00:25:06than they were 24 to 48 hours ago.

00:25:09And listen, Houston had a need

00:25:10and they addressed it,

00:25:11getting Carlos Correa back.

00:25:12But again, what version of Carlos Correa

00:25:14are you getting?

00:25:15And that's the big question.

00:25:17So there are some reinforcements on the way.

00:25:20They will get some pitching help back there.

00:25:23But again, you got a Texas team

00:25:25that is just a couple of years removed

00:25:27from being World Series champions.

00:25:59That's the New York Yankees

00:26:00and the Detroit Tigers.
