Transcript
00:00I'm Jim Bradley, Arts and Culture Correspondent at The Scotsman, and I'm here today at Sheddenborough,
00:07one of the newest venues of the Edinburgh Fringe, which has just opened today.
00:12And I'm here with Darcy Dobson, who is the producer of the new venue, and I'm just going
00:17to talk to you a little bit about how you have turned a tiny bar in the Edinburgh College
00:21of Art into a fringe venue in less than two weeks.
00:25I mean, the secret to building a fringe venue in two weeks is to go build it in two weeks.
00:30And the honest truth to this is we've installed this venue in two weeks, but we've been building
00:35it for years, if you want it to be.
00:37And this was originally an idea that obviously Francesco and Harriet and Gary came up with
00:42five years ago, and it was about platforming the Edinburgh Fringe and the incredible global
00:49platform that provides the artists.
00:51And it was about stripping back the production elements and letting the storytelling shine.
00:56That was really always at the core of what Edinburgh was.
00:58And when we came to build this venue, that was really our north star for all of this, about
01:04supporting artists and letting storytelling sing and do that.
01:08And what we used to dictate everything as we started to plan out what we wanted to pretend
01:11to look like.
01:12We knew we wanted to be an artist hub, we knew we wanted to do a cafe and a bar in the daytime,
01:16great wifi, amazing coffee, plug socket, a place that artists can go and make their own.
01:22We wanted a courtyard.
01:23But we also wanted it to be a really gorgeous intimate theatre.
01:26We've always felt that magic happens in small spaces.
01:28And as we thought we were looking at these different places, we just touched Edinburgh,
01:31but we were a gardener, it felt like a perfect place.
01:33It's so small and gorgeous and intimate.
01:36And yeah, so that's sort of where it all began and that's the idea behind it.
01:41And hopefully that bleeds through into everything from the venue to the programme we've got in
01:45the meeting.
01:46And the other side to how you build a venue in two weeks is, the most important of that
01:53is building the team.
01:54And I think we're saying, you know, in this video, you've got, of the building of Sheddenbury,
01:58you've seen how many people have come in and out and that's just the people on the site.
02:01But, you know, everyone from our amazing design team, our production team, our venue team,
02:05our marketing team, you know, these guys are the top of their game.
02:10They're designers and people who work at the West End or the UK.
02:14But when we came to them and said, we've got this mad, bonkers project, we'd love you
02:17to be involved.
02:18And they said, yes, because they believe in what Edinburgh is about.
02:22And so they agreed, they came on board.
02:25And I can't wait for you to see it because, my gosh, they put absolutely everything into
02:30this with details of it and being able to let everyone do their job and just know that
02:34everyone is getting on with doing everything to the absolute high standard.
02:38But then, you know, yesterday we were finishing up and it was 1am and everyone had a brim
02:43in their hand and they were sweeping up.
02:45And I think that's the fringe.
02:46It's these incredible people at the top of their game who are also not afraid to come
02:50in and get their hands dirty.
02:52It's incredible.
02:53It's fantastic and it looks amazing.
02:55And I've been lucky enough to watch it in full.
02:56I've been here every day for about the last 12 days filming a time lapse.
02:59So we can watch that video now.
