00:00Before the knucklehead, panhead, and shovelhead, there was the flathead.
00:08An engine so rugged, so reliable, and so defining that it carried Harlow-Davidson through some of
00:14the most turbulent decades in American history. From the Great Depression to the front lines of
00:19World War II, the flathead was more than an engine, it was a symbol of American perseverance.
00:24In this video, we're taking a ride through time to understand how the Harlow-Davidson
00:29flathead helped shape the brand we know today. Origins, the birth of a new engine design,
00:351929. The flathead story begins in 1929, right before the world fell into the depths of the
00:42Great Depression. Harlow-Davidson needed an engine that was simple, cheap to manufacture,
00:47and dependable enough to win over the average American rider. The answer was the side valve,
00:53or flathead, design, a configuration where valves sit beside the piston inside the cylinder head,
00:58unlike overhead valve designs. This seemingly simple decision would not only save Harlow-Davidson
01:05during economic collapse, but it would also give rise to an entire generation of motorcycles that
01:10would carry the brand through the next three decades. Technology and engineering, simple,
01:16strong, and built to last. Let's break down what made the flathead so unique.
01:22Unlike OHV engines that use rocker arms to open and close valves above the piston,
01:27the flathead placed the valves next to the combustion chamber. While this limited airflow and thus
01:32horsepower, it drastically reduced mechanical complexity. Fewer moving parts meant fewer things
01:38to go wrong, a dream for rural riders and mechanics in the early 20th century. Another benefit?
01:45Cooling. The flathead ran cooler, resisted detonation, and handled low-octane fuel far better
01:52than its OHV competitors. In an age where gas quality was inconsistent and roadside repair
01:57shops were rare, reliability trumped raw power. It wasn't fast, but it was bulletproof.
02:05The flatheads roll in the Great Depression. During the 1930s, hundreds of motorcycle brands
02:11across the US collapsed under the weight of the Depression. Indian, Excelsior Henderson,
02:16and others struggled to stay afloat. But Harley-Davidson, thanks to its dependable flathead-powered Model
02:23D and later the VL and RL series, continued to sell bikes, even as people were losing homes and jobs,
02:29these motorcycles weren't toys, they were tools. For many, owning a Harley meant the ability to get to work,
02:36deliver goods, or join law enforcement. The flathead made Harley-Davidson a brand of working-class heroes.
02:44Going to war, the flathead in World War II. No discussion of the flathead is complete without
02:50mentioning the WLA, the legendary Liberator. When the United States entered World War II,
02:56Harley-Davidson modified its existing 45-cubic-inch flathead engine to produce a military-grade
03:01motorcycle for the US Army. The result was the WLA, rugged, stripped-down, and purpose-built for combat
03:09conditions. With reinforced frames, rugged suspension, blackout lights, and even rifle
03:15holsters, the WLA became an icon on battlefields across Europe and the Pacific. Harley produced over
03:2290,000 of them during the war. These bikes served in everything from messenger rolls to reconnaissance.
03:27In mud, sand, snow, and jungle, the flathead never quit. It proved that American engineering could go
03:36head-to-head with any machine in the world, and win. Post-war explosion, the flathead hits the streets
03:42again. When World War II ended, many flathead WLAs returned home and were sold as military surplus.
03:50These affordable, durable machines found their way into the hands of a new generation of American youth,
03:55many of them wore veterans who had already formed a bond with these bikes during the war.
04:00This era marked the true beginning of biker culture as we know it today. Flatheads were bobbed,
04:06chopped, and stripped to the frame. They became the beating heart of the outlaw motorcycle movement
04:12and helped create the chopper culture of the 1950s and 60s. Popular Flathead Models, A Closer Look
04:20Let's explore the key models that ran on the flathead engine.
04:23Model D, 1929-1931. Harley's first flathead V-twin, the Model D introduced the 45Ci side valve design.
04:34It was a leap forward in terms of simplicity and durability. It laid the groundwork for everything
04:40that came after. UL and U-Series, 1937-1948. These 74Ci, 1,200 cubic centimeters, flatheads were
04:51heavy-duty cruisers often used with sidecars. Their low-end torque made them popular with law
04:57enforcement and long-distance riders. Even today, the UL remains a sought-after collector's item.
05:04WLA, 1940-1945. The war hero. As discussed earlier, the WLA is perhaps the most iconic
05:14flathead-powered bike of all time. Built for battle, but reborn as a symbol of American rebellion.
05:21Servicar, 1932-1973. Yes, the flathead even powered Harley's three-wheeled Servicar,
05:29a utility vehicle used by police, delivery services, and small businesses. It remained in production
05:36until 1973, long after the engine was retired from two-wheeled machines.
05:42Decline, The Flathead's Last Stand
05:45As the motorcycle world evolved, so did Harley's need for more power. In 1936,
05:51Harley introduced the Knucklehead, a revolutionary OHV engine with greater performance.
05:56While flathead models were still offered in parallel, they eventually lost ground to their faster,
06:02more advanced cousins. By the late 1940s, the writing was on the wall. The UL was discontinued in 1948.
06:12The WLA's military role was over. Only the Servicar hung on until 1973.
06:19The Flathead's reign was over, but its legend had just begun.
06:22In the custom world, flatheads reborn. Today, flatheads are more than just museum pieces,
06:30they're beloved icons in the custom motorcycle world. Builders seek them out for their vintage
06:35aesthetic, mechanical purity, and historical value. From bobbers to choppers to full military
06:41restorations, flatheads are enjoying a renaissance. And because of their simpler architecture, they're
06:47still relatively easy to maintain, provided you can find parts. Custom builders worldwide honor the
06:54flathead not by turning it into something it's not, but by letting its raw, mechanical soul shine through.
07:00Collectors dream a value in vintage. Finding an original flathead in good condition is getting
07:06harder each year. Prices have soared, especially for WLAs with original military markings or UL models
07:13with matching numbers. Collectors prize these bikes not just for their scarcity, but for the stories they
07:19tell. Every worn part, every dented tank, it all speaks to a life lived on the open road or the
07:25battlefield. The Flathead's place in Harley history. More than just an engine, the Flathead was a bridge,
07:33between the belt-driven relics of the 1910s and the powerful machines of the post-war boom.
07:39It helped Harley survive financial disaster, built a global reputation for dependability,
07:44and laid the foundation for the company's modern image. Without the Flathead, there would be no
07:49knucklehead, no panhead, and perhaps, no Harley-Davidson at all. Long live the Flathead!
07:57The Harley-Davidson Flathead isn't just part of motorcycle history, it is motorcycle history.
08:03It was the workhorse of a nation, a warrior on foreign soil, and the silent partner of rebels
08:08and dreamers for over four decades. Though it's no longer in production, its thumping heartbeat echoes
08:14across time. Every time you see a vintage Harley roar down the highway, or a hand-built chopper roll
08:20into a show, know this, the Flathead lives on, in chrome, in steel, and in spirit. Your voice matters.
