Karoline Leavitt Asked About Delaying Tariffs With Other Countries After Mexico Gets Another 90-Day Extension

During a White House press briefing on Thursday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about extending tariff deadlines with other countries.

00:00Thanks, Caroline. For the countries that don't have a deal yet, should we be looking at the April 2nd chart at all?

00:07Or is he negotiating and talking about having a set tariff rate, you know, 10 percent, 20 percent?

00:14Those discussions are taking place with the trade team today.

00:17And again, we'll provide further guidance with that executive order once it is signed.

00:21And the answer to that question will be in that executive order.

00:24Is he looking to provide any more extensions today after his phone call with Mexico?

00:28Is there any other conversations like that?

00:31I do know that other foreign leaders around the world have reached out.

00:35And if you if the president decides to share the conclusions of those calls with all of you, he will do so himself.

00:40But I do want to reiterate what the president said about Mexico.

00:43Mexico is still paying tariffs.

00:45They're paying a 25 percent tariff on fentanyl, 25 percent tariff on cars, a 50 percent tariff on steel, aluminum and copper.

00:52And additionally, Mexico has agreed to immediately terminate its non-tariff trade barriers, of which there are many.

00:59And as the president said, we will continue to talk to Mexico over the next 90 days with the goal of signing a larger trade deal.

01:06The key to this, again, is Mexico has agreed to terminate those non-tariff barriers and to continue to work with us in good faith.

01:13Mexico is a very unique situation of all the other countries around the world, because, of course, we share our southern border with Mexico,

01:20which we've seen an increase in cooperation between Mexico's president, Claudia Scheinbaum,

01:25and our administration on clamping down on drug trafficking and human trafficking at the southern border.

01:30We appreciate those efforts and will continue to work in good faith and to continue to have these trade discussions as well.
