00:00Just in time for Halloween, the ocean's mysterious depths are giving us one heck of a spooky treat.
00:09This video was recently captured by the Minderloo UWA Deep Sea Research Center,
00:14and this is an octopus often referred to as the Big Eye Jellyhead.
00:18This video was taken in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 15,750 feet, or nearly 3 miles underwater.
00:26This is one of the few observations of this creature biologists have ever made directly,
00:30meaning we actually don't know very much about it.
00:32What we do know is that females can grow upwards of around 5 and a half feet long.
00:36Their bouncing locomotion is also a signature of their serrate octopus family,
00:40hopping along the ocean floor in search of food.
00:43In fact, researchers have recently described its cousin, the Big Fin Jellyhead,
00:47as having an identical movement pattern,
00:49hopping along and grabbing any prey it happens to bounce upon in the process.
00:53However, that one lives in much shallower waters.
00:55It's a mesmerizing and delicate dance,
00:57one used to snare other creatures in the epic depths of the ocean.
01:00Just one more of the many secrets still yet to be discovered on our planet's final frontier.
